Heroic Purgatory: An Asian Cinema Podcast

In this episode of Heroic Purgatory we put on our wuxia hats and EastmanColor glasses for King Hu's 1967 iconic piece, Dragon Inn. It is a film of many influences coalesced into a Ming dynasty tale of brave warriors standing up to an evil eunuch's army, with beautiful action pieces and big emotional swings. We discuss how the film holds up today and how it compares with the more recent Tsui Hark produce New Dragon Gate Inn (1992). We hope you enjoy our discussion. King Hu is one of China's most influential filmmakers, famous for his historical martial arts films which helped to popularise the wuxia (‘martial chivalry') genre in the 1960s and 70s with classic films like 'Come Drink with Me' (1966), 'Dragon Inn' (1967), and 'A Touch of Zen' (1971) - the latter of which he received the Technical Grand Prize at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. His work has inspired directors ranging from Tsui Hark to Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou to Quentin Tarantino, and since his death in 1997 at the age of 64, organisations like the King Hu Foundation have continued to promote and champion his work. As a result, much of his exquisite output is now readily available around the world in lovingly restored digital formats. To discuss the life and work of this extraordinary filmmaker, we welcome two King Hu Foundation board members: Michael Berry, Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA, who is also a Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies; and the filmmaker, Céline Zen, a Chinese-born, France-based producer and director. We discuss the early life of the Beijing-born auteur who was forced into exile in Hong Kong after the Chinese Communist Revolution, and his journey from artist to actor, writer, and director, becoming one of the biggest talents at new Shaw Brothers production company before his relocation to Taiwan. We discuss the meaning of 'wuxia'; his influences - from his love of calligraphy to Ming dynasty history and the Chinese Opera - and how, despite his critical praise, his films were not always successful in their day, and the toll this took on his work in later life. A huge thank you to Audrey Edwards at the King Hu Foundation for her help in organising this episode.LINKSKing Hu Foundation website: https://kinghufoundationusa.org/King Hu Foundation on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kinghufoundation/ Michael Berry's website: https://michael-berry.com/ Michael Berry on the UCLA website: https://www.alc.ucla.edu/person/michael-berry/ Michael Berry on Douban: http://site.douban.com/108600/Michael Berry on Weibo: https://weibo.com/bairuiwenMichael Berry on X: https://x.com/BairuiwenMichael Berry on ClubHouse: http://clubhousedb.com/user/bairuiwen Buy Michael Berry's books on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Michael-Berry/author/B001HCVQQWCéline Zen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/celine-zen-7a6570195/Céline Zen on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4508435/Trailer for Céline Zen's 'Vous êtes jeunes, vous êtes beaux' (2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vIOOeqph08A tribute to King Hu: https://youtu.be/rGueQmyN_kMKung Fu Movie Guide Podcast - 'Dragon Inn' special - Live in Lewes with Katrina Durden: https://bit.ly/KFMGPodKatrinaDurdenLiveBuy King Hu films on Blu-ray in the UK from 88 Films and Eureka Entertainment: 'Come Drink with Me' (https://88-films.myshopify.com/products/come-drink-with-me-88-asia-24), 'Dragon Inn' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/dragon-inn/), 'A Touch of Zen' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/a-touch-of-zen/), 'The Fate of Lee Khan' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/the-fate-of-lee-khan/), 'The Valiant Ones' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/the-valiant-ones/), 'Raining in the Mountain' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/raining-in-the-mountain-kong-shan-ling-yu/), 'Legend of the Mountain' (https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/legend-of-the-mountain/).King Hu profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/KingHuProfile 'Dragon Inn' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/DragonGateInn'A Touch of Zen' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ATouchOfZen Hosted on Acast. Tsui Hark's SHANGHAI BLUES (1984), starring Kenny Bee, Sylvia Chang and Sally Yeh, is currently playing on MUBI. A commercial romantic comedy with musical numbers galore and lots of screwball and slapstick, the film is easy to like. We discuss the pleasures in the performers, the interwar Shanghai setting, the beauty of its look and design, the inventiveness of its shot design and composition. We note how rare it is to see a look designed purely to please instead of to evoke, convey and signify in contemporary cinema. Might this also be a limitation? The film feels like a quickly executed trifle. It's very broad and the execution feels a bit clunky. We were nonetheless both charmed by it though Richard rated it a bit higher than I did. Where we intersect and where we diverge is the subject of the podcast.

COME WITH US AS WE TUMBLE DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE, PASS THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, ENTER THE WARDROBE, AND RIDE A TORNADO TO OZ!   It's time to cover one of my favorite subgenres: movies where people cross over into another world where they learn a lesson and meet a bunch of walking metaphors. This episode's guest host, Betsy, calls these Portal Fantasies and notes similarities to the popular anime/manga Isekai genre, but I'm afraid that those titles will mess up my search results, so I'm calling them [Blank] in Wonderland Movies.   We're trying to cover some of the rarer examples of the genre – specifically Tsui Hark's Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983), Vladimir Grammatikov's Mio, Min Mio (aka: Mio in the Land of Faraway, 1987), Hiroyuki Morita's The Cat Returns (2002), and Gokhan Yorgancigil's On the Count of Zero (Turkish: Sıfır Dediğimde, 2007) – but we can't help but also talk about popular classics, like Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Pan's Labyrinth, Spirited Away, and others.   00:00 – Intro and all the important, great movies we aren't going to cover 12:29 – Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain  34:04 – Mio, Min Mio 1:07:22 – The Cat Returns 1:29:23 – On the Count of Zero 1:47:55 – Outro and other recommendations

Episode 7: “TVB's Impact on the Emergence of ‘Hong Kong' and the ‘Hong Konger' Identity" Television Broadcasting Limited (TVB) was founded in 1967 and had, by the 1970s, become a popular and influential entertainment and information program in Hong Kong. Even Hong Kong cinema was directly influenced by the rise of television. Television soon became a training ground for talent in the film industry: successful televisions were often adapted into movies, and it was common for successful television personnel to be introduced into the film industry. Television dramas and news programs also established a distinctive identity for the people of Hong Kong. Cantonese Television even helped shift Hong Kong Cinema's market from being a Mandarin-dominated market to being Cantonese-dominated. In the 1970s, Hong Kong cinema completed a generational transition, with the previous generation of directors and writers retiring from the scene and a new generation of filmmakers from Hong Kong taking over. Notable directors who emerged from this period include John Woo, Sammo Hung, and Tsui Hark, who all established themselves as leading figures in the industry. In addition to new filmmakers, new film genres such as martial arts films, crime films, gangster films, and gambling films also emerged in the 1970s, which had not been seen before. ****************** Follow the hosts: Kay Ho's Instagram: @kayho1430 Po Fung's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/flash1030/ This episode is part of the "Preserve Yesterday - Back to Lee Theatre VR" project, which was a collaboration with the Hong Kong XR Museum. In this Cinema Shock Rewind episode, we're re-publishing our episode covering THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN! As was the case with GAME OF DEATH, our previous Rewind episode, the history of THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN has some significant ties with the history of martial arts cinema in Hong Kong, which directly influences the creation of Tsui Hark's ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. We're providing this episode as a refresher for older listners and new listeners alike, as it provides some fun context and cross-over with our upcoming episode covering Tsui's film. THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN was originally published in January 2021 as part of our Six Degrees of Kill Bill series.

“THEY ARE THE BAD GUYS, WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS. UNDERSTAND?“On this week's episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we talk about a film from a genre we have never covered before. We talk about the 1983 Hong Kong Wuxia classic Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain, directed by Hong Kong New Wave filmmaker Tsui Hark, starring Yuen Biao, Adam Cheng, Corey Yuen, Brigitte Lin, Moon Lee, Damian Lau, Mang Hoi, and Sammo Hung. We begin by talking about the story, breaking it down by what we thought of the characters, comedy, the philosophy depicted by the use of the Dual Swords, and whether there can be a connection between the story on screen with the real-life history of Hong Kong under rule of differing governments and how the film can be interpreted as a call for unity. We talk about the depiction of the elders and masters in the film, and how their inability to enact real change has thrown the world into conflict that the new generation must find a resolution for. From there we get into the technical side of the film, from it's impressive use of wire work during the fight scenes, to the in-camera techniques that were used to achieve the amazing choreography, to the film's very dated visual effects (though ambitious may not have aged as well.) But the film's editing becomes a larger focus in the episode, breaking down how the fast-paced editing helps the film, but also might be hindering it when compared to other wuxia films. Lastly, we go into the multiple versions that exist of the film, calling into question whether Tsui Hark ever got the version of the film he wanted. We breakdown the elements that go into a wuxia film, and how well Zu Warriors follows it, and go briefly go into the history of the Hong Kong New Wave cinema, and how Zu Warriors was a huge success for the movement but also a source of inspiration for future filmmakers. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this special episode of Retro Grade Podcast!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o
