The man...the legend...the icon...Cyrus, is back! He dives back into the Fu for Thought foray to discuss Lau Kar Leung's comedic classic, DIRTY HO. I've avoided showing this one to Devan for years because I thought the "shenanigans" would annoy her. Well, she's finally seen it. Did she love it? Hate it? On this episode, we dicuss the concept of "covert fights," we wonder "What are the 7 Agonies all about?" and Devan expresses her dislike for the "killer cowbell." Later, we answer listener questions. Including whether we'd fight our parents in their prime and if Gordon Liu is an underrated actor. Enjoy!

We're back after a brief hiatus with another geographically centered mini-series, this time focused on the movies of Hong Kong! And to kick it off, Nick is finally making good on his longstanding threat to talk Shaw Bros: it's Lau Kar-Leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978)!36th Chamber is an enormous tentpole in kung fu film, and one of the first post-Bruce Lee HK movies to break through to international audiences. We're probing into what made it so influential, how it established training tropes, and we opine on why it's a perfect introduction to the genre. We're also talking about Lau Kar-Leung's approach to martial arts as a self-improvement tool, Gordon Liu and Shaw Bros' outsized impact outside of the kung fu world, and the Kill Bill siren. And yes, we mention Bruce Lee.But who are the Shaw Bros exactly? Nick's here with a quick rundown of their history and how there's literally a place called Movietown. We also determine what chambers would absolutely wreck us personally.Next time: we're agreeing with Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in Corey Yuen's YES MADAM (1985)!

Igyekszünk a filmet feminista szempontból is részletesen boncolgatni, kritizálva a rosszabbul öregedő részeket. Mitől működik a film zenéje? The Martial Arts Mania Podcast

New episode alert! This week, Gavin and I are tackling one of the greatest Kung Fu movies of all time. YES, we have said this before, but this is truly one of the masterpieces of old school Kung Fu Cinema- ‘Martial Club' (1981). Directed by Kung Fu visionary Lau Kar Leung, and starring the iconic Gordon Liu as Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung, this master class in martial arts filmmaking has all the elements of an all-time classic, and it doesn't disappoint! With an emphasis on 武德 or “martial arts ethics”, this picture showcases not only the physical aspects of Chinese martial arts, but also the honor and morals that go along with it. You've got North vs. South, kicks vs. fists, righteous vs. dishonest-this along with ferocious fight scenes from start to finish, and an opening lion dance sequence that has to be seen to be believed, and ‘Martial Club' delivers one heck of a ride! To add to all of that, you've got some of the most technical Kung Fu choreography ever displayed on screen, which is why it's easy to see why ‘Martial Club' might just be the pinnacle of Kung Fu cinema! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!

Yet, whatever issues they had behind the scenes, no one can deny the brilliance of Tarantino's movie, with Uma Thurman iconic as The Bride, with ace backup from genre stalwarts like Gordon Liu, Sonny Chiba, and the amazing David Carradine as Bill himself. And once the drama behind the scenes was in the rear view, the whole bloody affair ended up being split into two films - for this video however, we cover the entirety of the saga! So sit back, wiggle your big toe, and find out "WTF Happened to KILL BILL (2003)?"

We take a deep dive into it, and Dom kicks some science right off the top of the dome. It's impressive stuff.

On this episode of X-Ray Vision, Jason Concepcion and Rosie Knight go verse-jumping with Michelle Yeoh! First in Previously On (3:14), Jason and Rosie discuss the news that Warner Bros. is hitting pause on upcoming projects with Ezra Miller, theorize about the latest Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailers, and recap episode two of the Disney+ limited series Moon Knight. In the Airlock (41:44), they dive deep (deeeep) into the A24 film Everything Everywhere All at Once (in theaters now!) and the masterful ways EEAO plays with genre, offers thrills, laughs, and heart, explores mental health, and, of course, celebrates its iconic cast (James Hong anyone!?). Then, in the Hive Mind (1:01:45), Jason and Rosie are joined by the Daniels, the writer/director duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once, to discuss the multiverse as a story tool to explore morality, the brilliance of Hong Kong cinema, how the film pulled off its incredible stunt work, and the importance of telling inter-generational Asian-American stories. When KILL BILL begins, the first image that we see on screen (after the obligatory Miramax logo, of course) is the iconic shield that indicated that we're watching a Shaw Brothers film. The Shaw Brothers Studio was one of the premiere studios in Hong Kong in the 20th century, and their "golden age" would probably have been during the 1960s and 1970s, when they began to produce the Kung Fu films that most western audiences would come to know them for. These Kung Fu films were a major influence on Quentin Tarantino when crafting KILL BILL, especially during the House of Blue Leaves sequence in VOL. 1 and in the Pei Mei chapter for VOL. 2. In this episode, we'll trace the history of the Shaw Brothers Studio, and take a look at what might be their most well-known Kung Fu flick, THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978), starring the legendary Gordon Liu, a performer who would appear in not one, but two different roles in Tarantino's film. The film follows a highly fictionalized version of San Te, a legendary Shaolin martial arts disciple who trained under the general Chi Shan. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is widely considered to be one of the greatest kung fu films and a turning point in its director's and star's careers. It was followed by Return to the 36th Chamber, which was more comedic in presentation and featured Gordon Liu as the new main character with another actor in the smaller role of San Te, and Disciples of the 36th Chamber. Hallo zusammen! ON THE BEAT empfohlen: http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/2011/01/14/planet-hong-kong-the-dragon-dances/

Fresh from his award-winning fight choreography duties on a string of Scott Adkins hits - including Boyka: Undisputed, Eliminators, Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, and the upcoming Accident Man and Triple Threat - it was a great pleasure to spend time with the Swedish martial arts maestro, Tim Man. A former taekwondo champion, Tim Man learned the hard way by getting knocked around as a stuntman in Thailand, working with the likes of Tony Jaa, Jeeja Yanin, Joe Lewis and Gordon Liu. Although he hates being interviewed, we still enjoy a wide-ranging chat about his life and career; from being an obsessed martial arts movie fan growing up in Malmö, Sweden, to his first leap into the action movie industry following the international success of Ong-Bak. We discuss why he continues to work with the British action star, Scott Adkins, and also his plans going forward in the movie business. This interview was recorded before Tim's success at the 2017 Shanghai International Film Festival, where he picked up the award for Best Fight Scene for his work in Boyka: Undisputed. Tim Man is a name to look out for and it was a pleasure talking to him for this episode of the podcast. For more information on Tim, visit his website: extremestunts.se.

Here's a kung fu movie double bill for the final episode in the first season of Kung Fu Movie Guide podcasts. Join me as I have a quick chat with the legendary Korean-born Hapkido master and former action star Hwang In-shik, famous for his role in the 1972 Bruce Lee classic The Way of the Dragon, and his work with Jackie Chan in The Young Master and Dragon Lord. The person I have to thank for organising the interview is my second guest on the show, Ricky Baker. 'Kung Fu Ricky' has dedicated his life to the promotion of Hong Kong and kung fu cinema. His work as part of the Eastern Heroes label alongside film expert Toby Russell has seen him publish books, magazines and documentaries on kung fu cinema, as well as provide Hong Kong movie stars with their first taste of western exposure, hosting events with the likes of Chow Yun-fat, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Gordon Liu. His work in championing the golden age of Hong Kong cinema continues to this day with the Eastern Heroes shop and website where fans can purchase rare memorabilia and new material, like his array of Bruce Lee titles written by the highly knowledgeable historian, Steve Kerridge. Ricky shares his memories of working in the promotions industry as well as meeting his heroes like John Woo and Quentin Tarantino.
