This is a long overdue episode! I am bringing back one of my favorite people, Bob Keeley himself. When Rob agreed to come on the podcast way back in 2015, I was not only flabergasted that he agreed to it, but it was one of the best episodes of this show that has been published. Rob is back and giving us a much needed update on the state of Keeley Electronics, talking about collaborating with Andy Timmons, elaborating on some overlooked aspects of running a manufacturing business in the US, how Boss inspired him, and a whole lot more! For episode 74 we invite Kris Barocsi to openly discuss current (and future) guitar prices. Are they too expensive or not? We also have the undoubtedly hardest Buy, Borrow, or Burn in Guitar Stories history with three AMAZING picks from Keeley Electronics, Beetronics, and Two Notes Audio. We also talk about a Guitarist's Hierarchy of Needs and why selling every guitar you own and start from zero can be a cathartic and rewarding experience. This was an enlightening one, enjoy the ride!

"It wasn't like I was looking to make pedals my career, at all… it was just, 'I bet I can sell one to buy parts for this other one.'" –Robert Keeley, on his early work On this week’s podcast, we talk to Robert Keeley of Keeley Electronics. When it comes to the world of effects pedals, Keeley is, quite simply, a legend. During our conversation, he recounts his early days flipping hi-fi gear he'd find at estate sales; explains why he never became an amp builder; outlines the importance of a great education for all of his employees; and walks us through the lifecycle of a pedal currently in development (the ECCOS delay/looper). Whether you know Keeley for his old Tube Screamer mods or for his more recent, digital signal processing effects, you're bound to learn something during this hour-long chat. This episode is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars and Mono Cases.

Episode 107- Hooooooooo boy! We really went for it on this episode! Jay and I recorded this episode over the course of a 4.5 hour conversation. We decided that we should probably record some of our yammerings, and here is the result! Well, part of it any ways. We discuss A LOT of stuff here. Pedals, amps, guitars, the state of the guitar industry and Anaheim, California and its rather unpleasant tasting water. It was a blast! Don't forget to show our awesome sponsors some love. Pete Jonas joins in this week and we talk about his journey playing guitar from attending NAMM at an early age, demoing at the Dwarfcraft Pedals booth as a teen, to later being an LA session player. He talks about the differences in being self taught and getting his formal music education at Berkeley. We talk about his unique and eclectic approach to playing guitar, Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, and the accordian. We talk about his love of Old Blood Noise Pedals, CamelTone, Keeley Electronics, Kauer Guitars, Benson, & Otis Amps. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
At 33 episodes it's time we address the elephant in the room: Modes. what are they, where do they come from (yeah Jon's a history nerd too so watch out) and how to practice them. Also, more Keeley Electronics this week, with the pedal to end all pedals. Plus Christmas time is here, Americans hawking cheap guitars in developing countries to Irishmen, and more banter. Thanks to all those who have liked the show recently and the emails and comments. Leave a review on your favorite podcast app. It helps a ton. This episode is sponsored by Walrus Audio. Check out their revisions for the Iron Horse v2. The updated features really maximize the flexibility of the pedal. This episode was also sponsored by Keeley Electronics. They're about to release the Compressor Plus. Keeley was already one of the top names in pedal compression, and they just went PLUS. That's awesome. Lastly (but not leastly), this episode was sponsored by Sinasoid. If you're looking for a custom cable, look no further than Sinasoid. In this episode Ryan starts off by going on and on about his new amp. If you haven't already seen it on YouTube on Instagram, it's an Ibanez TSA15H. Here's the standard episode stuff. 1. Epiphone Riviera 2. Ryan catches Steve up on what went down at Kauerfest. Here's a link to three videos Ryan made from the event. 3. The Fender Koa Telecaster is a real thing 4. Is Guitar Dead or dying? Washington Post offered an opinion, and so did we. 5. This guy needs an effects pedal expert. This week's song was sent by the band Antiøch, from Columbus , Ohio. The song is called "Don't Look Down"
This podcast is sponsored by Keeley Electronics and Sinasoid Cables. Make sure and check them out! There were quite a few outstanding shows that took place in early Spring throughout the history of the GD, so picking one for this week's show wasn't that easy. I think this is however a good show from an outstanding tour, Spring of 1987. The band roars out of the gate on Jack Straw, then goes into an outstanding Franklin's Tower, in honor of Philadelphia I presume.. The first set is full of sparkling playing and high energy. I'm personally fond of the Candyman, however, in the more soulful vein..I'm even willing to give them a pass on the perfunctory 'Don't Ease' which closes the set... the second set next week is very good as well.. The sound quality is not pristine but quite listenable, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that your Spring is busting out all over too. 3/31/87 - Grateful Dead The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA Set One:Jack Straw ->Franklin's Tower C C RiderRamble On RoseTons Of SteelMama Tried ->Big RiverCandymanDesolation Row ->Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">here:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3 The Deadpod exists only through your support.. thank you my friends..... Hard to believe but it almost LENT already! And that of course means its Mardi Gras time! This next show up on our plate is from Mardi Gras 1986 - a request from a great friend of the Deadpod - from February 11th, 1986. This is one of those great Oakland Mardi Gras runs where the Neville Brothers opened for the boys (and we'll hear them on the second set next week). This week's first set, although ragged at times, and with Jerry's voice not exactly perfect, is still marked by alot of enthusiasm and good vibes. My favorites from this first set include a raging Minglewood, and a nice set closing Bird Song->Music Never Stopped->Might As Well.. next week in honor of Fat Tuesday a great Iko :) Grateful Dead - February 11, 1986Henry J. Inspired - that's the word that comes to mind when I think of this performance.. this is a wonderful piece of work - surely one of the better shows of 1976, and this nearly 2 hour second set features some real gems. I've had the jones for some early mindbending Dead for awhile.. I finally decided this week was as good a time as any to feed it.. This week's Deadpod features fragments from two shows that took place 43 years ago, February 2nd and 3rd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland OR. It's great to hear Tom Constantin on these tapes, I especially enjoy him on the Clementine from the 2nd.. that show on the 2nd also features the last time Bobby used these early lyrics: "When I woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day"The 2/3 show was supposedly one of the shows used in producing 'Anthem of the Sun'.. This features a rare 'Born Cross Eyed' and a great 'Eleven'.. Hope you lose yourself in it.. :) Grateful Dead - February 2, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR Viola Lee Blues That's It For The Other One -> Clementine -> Good Morning Little Schoolgirl// Grateful Dead - February 3, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR That's It For The Other One ->New Potato CabooseIt Hurts Me TooBorn Cross-EyedGood Morning Little SchoolgirlDark Star ->China Cat Sunflower ->The Eleven You can listen to this week's Deadpod http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">here:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3 My thanks as always to our friends at Keeley Electronics! High time for some classic '68 Dead.. this week's show contains a wonderful classic Dark Star from 1968.. its from 'Betty Nelson's Organic Raspberry Farm' in Sultan WA., and took place on September 2nd, 1968. While the tape does have its share of rough spots it really is a quite spectacular record of the band as it is nearing maturity.. the incredible Pigpen vocals on 'Alligator' are another highlight.. This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:) I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare.. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride. This week we'll hear set 2 of the Grateful Dead's performance on May 9th, 1987 at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. This week's Deadpod was a request from a brother who just lost a brother - one of his best memories of his late friend was a roadtrip to see this show, and what a show it was! This was the 'comeback' show where Jerry made his return after the coma that nearly took his life in 1986 - no one knew what was going to happen, and what a great choice for a opener in Touch of Grey! The entire show really sparkles, with a newfound energy and some great new MIDI sounds. To me, the energy of renewal present in this show fits perfectly at this time of year, besides I couldn't turn down a grieving friend.. I hope you enjoy it....
