Co-Host Ken Bechtel (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/yes) My guest Ken Bechtel has given a lot of thought to being true to oneself, or as he calls it, 'following your yes'. Essentially, the conversation on such a topic revolves around doing what we're told vs. thinking, feeling and intuiting for ourselves. Sometimes that's even trickier than it sounds. For example, what if someone else's 'yes' really sounds like it SHOULD be OUR yes also, but it really shouldn't be? So then, what if your yes isn't everyone else's yes? And what if everyone else's yes doesn't seem like yours? How do our heart, head and gut instinct work together properly to make the right 'yes' decisions at the right time? How do different personality types find their 'yes' in different ways? And how does following your 'yes' reconcile with finding purpose and meaning over the longer-term? What if following your 'yes' creates significant hardship in your life, or causes a rift in your family or your social circle? Are certain personality types better at all of this than others? What do many men fail to say yes to that they should? And what are too many men saying yes to that they shouldn't? Ken Bechtel is an author, speaker, and podcaster. He is the creator and host of Speaking of Partnership, a podcast with listeners in over 100 countries. In his recent book, Follow Your YES: A Simple Idea to Improve Anyone's Life, Ken shares ideas on building confidence and eliminating overwhelm across the full spectrum of life. He has invested over 20 years into researching and refining what it takes to make people thrive in this busy world and is dedicated to helping people expand into their fullest expression and live fulfilling lives. Ken joins me today to discuss “following your yes” and how doing so can impact your life. He distinguishes the “internal yes” from the “intellectual yes.” He discusses why a “no” uttered from the deepest convictions is better than a people-pleasing or conflict-avoidant “yes.” He explains how following “maybes” over an internal “yes” makes us overwhelmed and overburdened. Ken also reveals the key to transforming your life and underscores how staying true to your “yes” can become a gift to the people in your life. “The key to any transformation is not the first commitment that you're going to transform, it's re-committing when we fall off the track.” - Ken Bechtel This week on Mastering Overwhelm: Your “yes” as divine guidance The decision-making process and how to distinguish whether it's an “internal yes” or an intellectual justification How feelings push us forward and guide us through life The discovery of Only 10s and how to declutter our minds of shiny objects The fear of missing out and how following your “yes” can become a gift to the people in your life “Maybeland” and the importance of letting yourself be a beginner Productivity, overwhelm and following your “yes” How Following Your YES encouraged me to write Rising Leader Resources Mentioned: Book: The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life's Perfection by Michael A. Is your heart telling you to say YES instead of maybe, while your brain is putting on the brakes? Marni welcomes the inspirational Ken Bechtel into the Life Check Yourself studio. Ken is a podcast host and is the author of the recently released book, Follow Your YES. In his book and his program, Ken provides people with guidance on how to build confidence and eliminate overwhelm across all areas of their lives. Dating takeaways from this episode: The true meaning of maybe How to listen to our hearts Failures are our friends How to draw the right people to us Your YES Comes from the Heart Ken felt drawn to the message of Following Your YES when he realized that people weren't setting themselves up to win. He felt compelled to write a book about it to help people lead their lives with it instead of getting around to it when there was time and space. There are a whole host of things that try to keep people from following their YES and he said enough is enough! Ken believes YESes are like stepping stones. The trick is you won't know what the next yes is until you take the first one. We can never know what is going to happen before it all starts. So many people are frozen because they have fear of the unknown and too many what-ifs. To identify our YES, Ken says we can't think into it. Our YES is a feeling. It is not intellectual. It comes from our hearts. It is our divine guidance. And, who has a better view of what is possible, us or the divine? It sees the big picture. Our brains are hardwired to fear the unknown because it only focuses on survival. If we haven't done something yet, it wants to keep us from danger and effectively keeps us from taking the next step. Missteps Are Our Friends In his book, Follow Your YES, Ken has what looks to be a crazy acronym but is some great advice. YDKWYWUYKWYW stands for you don't know what you want until you know what you don't want. What Ken means by this is that knowing what we don't want helps us know what we do want. It is an invitation to narrow things down and refine our targets. Missteps and failures are our friends. They are helpful when refining our targets. When we are following our YES, living our best life, and listening to our hearts, we become a radio station that broadcasts our favorite music. Other people on the same wavelength pick up on our signal and it leads them to us. The Key to Getting Unstuck Ken says the key to getting unstuck so we can follow our YESes with confidence starts with making a list of our maybes. A maybe is something you think you want but figure it will happen eventually. The next step is the big one and that is to put all of your energy into things that are YESes right now! Shifting from a “relationship” to a “partnership” is an encompassing theme in the life and work of mentor and spiritual teacher Ken Bechtel. A couple of months away from getting married, Ken was devastated when his former fiance ended their relationship, expressing that her needs were not being met by the relationship. But like her, Ken recognized in retrospect that he had his own unexpressed needs and quickly realized that communicating needs is necessary for a relationship to evolve into a partnership. Today, this epiphany inspires Ken's mission to elevate the level of love in the world and to help women build an inner foundation of love by partnering people with the best version of themselves. In this episode, Ken and I discuss the difference between a “relationship” and a “partnership,” and what it means for a couple to shift from one to the other. We explore the importance of communicating needs and illustrate how a partnership can give us the freedom to have a life outside of it. We ponder on the story of a long-term couple, why they choose to stay unmarried, and how a partnership is created moment to moment. We also elaborate on how fear hinders us from standing up for our own truths and highlight how we can reconnect to our sincerest needs. “A partnership is where we're committed to being the best version of ourselves. And to be the best version of ourselves, we need to let our partners know what our needs are.” - Ken Bechtel This week on Shift-Starters: The relationship experience that made Ken interested in the idea of partnership The importance of expressing our needs How Ken worked on his healing after his separation from his former fiance How fear prevents us from expressing our needs in a relationship The worst reply to an expression of need The spatial quality of relationships and how it's different from a partnership Why “partnership” means having a life outside of your relationship Trusting the validity of our needs Self-trust, self-love, and the need to have compassion when we make ‘wrong' decisions Connecting and trusting intuition and bodily wisdom What it means to have true confidence The power of the now The story of an unmarried couple and how a partnership is created moment to moment Selfishness and expanding our definition of what it means to do things that are good for us Getting to know and reconnecting with your needs Cultivating safe containers to encourage transformation Connect with Ken Bechtel: Ken Bechtel Website Speaking of Partnership Podcast Speaking of Partnership on Facebook Speaking of Partnership on Twitter Ken Bechtel on LinkedIn Ken Bechtel on Instagram Ken Bechtel on Facebook Let's Start Some Shift! Today’s episode features Clients on Demand graduate Ken Bechtel, an expert in helping women find true and wonderful love that lasts. Ken came to COD knowing how to put together bits and pieces of his program, he knew it was time for a change after feeling burnt out from doing over 100 podcasts and 40 webinars. Since Ken is no longer spinning his wheels without consistent results, he was able to go on his FIRST vacation just for fun in 10 years! Ken shares the mindset tips and program changes that COD allowed for him to free up time and energy to best serve four times the number of clients from the previous year. In this episode we talk about: Ken helps single women who are committed to having true partnership attract and keep the best love into their life. Transitioning into an evergreen program and focusing on the outcome rather than the process was key to Ken’s success. Ken felt a tension and stress from putting out over 100 podcasts and 40 webinars with no guarantee of enrollments or commitment. He was doing it all piece by piece, not knowing exactly how to get the end result. Ken found the COD mindset work very effective, quick and purposeful. It was a night-and-day change to go from having anxiety and worry about where he could find the next client, to trusting the process and knowing that clients will consistently be showing up on his schedule. You do not need to wait until you have a large list, giant Instagram following, etc. You can begin at any time. Mentioned in This Episode: Clients on Demand Russ Ruffino

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
Ken Bechtel is a speaker, an educator and the producer and host of Speaking of Partnership. Having grown up on a farm in Central Illinois, he believed that not needing anyone was a good thing. He should be able to do it all himself. And he wore the badge of self-sufficiency and independence proudly, until he realized it wasn't really a badge...it was armor and it was keeping him from having the amazing experiences that partnership provides. So he decided to partner with leaders from all walks of life to bring you stories of where they have tripped up and where they have triumphed in their partnerships. Ken's passion is in helping you to experience the power and payoffs of partnership. By understanding and appreciating the opposite sex, you can feel safe, confident and understood in your personal, professional and family partnerships. Ken lives in Colorado with his lady love, Anna, and their dog Mikey. Guiding Principle “Can't never did anything.” - Wayne Bechtel Tripped Up in a Partnership When Ken's fiancee' walked out on him just months before their wedding and he found out he had a blind spot that was keeping him from receiving love. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever When Ken recognized how much he was ignoring his “Yes.” And that following his “Yes” almost always leads to another “Yes.” Proudest moment in partnership The amazing experiences he had on a trip to Africa as a result of trusting the Universe and operating from the position that “How” is none of his business.
