It's been four years since I began podcasting. I started with Mastering Midlife, which later became Mastering Overwhelm as my coaching practice evolved. You have all stayed with me for over 400 episodes, and after countless solo conversations and interviews with my brilliant guests, it is time to close the Mastering Overwhelm podcast. I have been going around the world, having a blast, and learning about living life. But all great things come to an end—so that other great things can begin. In this episode, I share what I hope you learned—what I hope I was able to impart—from the Mastering Midlife and Mastering Overwhelm podcasts. I also introduce The Rising Leader and describe how my Only 10s principle and career in coaching and sales are culminating in the next major project of my life. “I hope you noticed my humanity and how rich it is now that I've learned to accept my humanity, my spiritual self, and growth.” - Mark Silverman This week on Mastering Overwhelm: My fourth year as a podcaster Lessons I hope you've taken from Mastering Overwhelm Introducing The Rising Leader Mastering Overwhelm - Set Yourself Free to Enjoy Your Success Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Mastering Overwhelm Podcast. Bryan Post is an entrepreneur, speaker, author, and founder of Post Institute, an organization dedicated to helping parents heal wounds created by trauma. Post Institute has published over 100 books, DVDs, CDs, audio recordings, webinars, and articles on parenting children who have experienced pre-birth and early life trauma. One of America's leading child behavior and adoption experts, Bryan has taught and offered love-based, family-centered principles and concepts to over one million parents and professionals worldwide. He also currently serves as the Clinical Director for Parents in Training, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides wraparound services to adoptive families throughout Northern California. Bryan joins me today to discuss trauma and stress and how we can manage our responses to them. He defines trauma and describes its dynamics in adopted children's lives. He explains why the loss of someone close to us can cause a physiological disruption and why taking the time to grieve is important. He dissects how trauma causes us to become fearful and stress-sensitive. He also shares what we can learn as adults from soothing a child who's having a tantrum at the supermarket and underscores how we can learn to work through fear-based anxiety and stress responses by practicing mindful breathing. “All emotional reactivity stems from unfinished business. The moment you find yourself being stressed out, it has far more to do with you than the other person in the situation.”  - Bryan Post This week on Mastering Overwhelm: Bryan's background and his passion for helping adoptive families Adoption and why it can be a traumatic experience for a child Bryan's definition of trauma and the basis of post-traumatic stress disorder Society's aversion to grief and other negative emotions How practicing mindful breathing can help us manage fear-based anxiety and stress responses The allostatic load and window of tolerance Addiction as a trauma response The physiology of stress and trauma reactions How to help soothe a child having a tantrum in the supermarket Navigating emotional highs and lows Resources Mentioned: Book: The Emotional Brain: The Mysterious Underpinnings of Emotional Life by Joseph Ledoux Book: Peaks and Valleys: Making Good and Bad Times Work for You - at Work and in Life by Spencer Johnson Book: Who Moved My Cheese?: An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life by Spencer Johnson Connect with Bryan Post: Bryan Post Website Post Wraparound Post Institute Book: From Fear to Love: Parenting Difficult Adopted Children Using a Love-Based, Family-Centered Approach Post Institute on Facebook Post Institute on Twitter Bryan Post on LinkedIn Bryan Post on Instagram Bryan Post on Facebook Bryan Post on YouTube Mastering Overwhelm - Set Yourself Free to Enjoy Your Success Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Mastering Overwhelm Podcast. Is there something in your life you're trying to force? Are you, for example, trying to write a book instead of writing the book every day? Or are you trying to lose weight and reach a weight goal instead of actively watching what you're doing every single day? I was in a similar spot. Getting my weight down to 160 lbs has been my goal—a goal that had vexed me for a while. I am a coach, after all, so why couldn't I achieve the goals I said I wanted to reach? Today, I am at 164.5 lbs. I still haven't reached my goal, but it's no longer a point of contention. In fact, the process has become an awesome experience.  In this episode, I discuss failure and committing to the process of achieving your goals. I share some of the goals I made for myself earlier this year. I describe how I'm learning to keep my word to myself and how I'm approaching my weight goals. I also discuss the value of being kind to yourself and highlight the importance of focusing on your process over your goals. “Process over goals. We don't have control over the goal, but we have control over the process and who we are in it.” - Mark J. What do you do when you're stuck and don't know what steps to take forward? My take is to have some quiet time, sit down, and let the answer come to you. Our ice maker recently broke down: every time it produced ice, it would make this groaning, grinding, whining noise that we couldn't escape from. It drove me crazy. But since I didn't want to buy a new refrigerator-freezer—which costs around $3,000—I did my best to figure out what was wrong. Then, one day, all the answers just dawned on me–and I instantly knew how to fix the fridge. In this episode, I share the story of how I was able to fix my broken fridge and discuss how you can tap into the power of your intuition. I describe an amazing ritual for finding lost things. I also explain how the Only 10s principle can help you access your intuition and highlight the power of sitting, being quiet, and letting knowledge come to you. “If you're stuck with something and don't know what direction to take, what choice to make, what's next, sit on the couch and wait. Actually, It Is Too Late

It's too late for a lot of things for me. I just turned 60 and I have a new Achilles tendon issue; my back has been hurting in so many different areas; I had just healed my shoulder. So, it's probably best to accept that there are certain things—such as being a professional tennis player or ultra-marathoner—that I'll never be able to do. You might be in the same situation: you may feel like it's too late to meet certain goals. And you're right. In this episode, I explain why it is too late to do what you're passionate about—and why you have to start doing it now. I reveal various setbacks that prevent you from taking your first step toward your goals. I also share opportunities I missed years ago and the things I'm just starting today, even though I could have begun sooner. “Life is now. What do you think people skills are? I used to think that having people skills meant being a golden retriever: having a pleasant personality, being liked, and being friendly, lovely, and tolerant. And if someone throws a ball? You go get it. But as I wrote my book, Only 10s, I learned that people skills, while they are relational skills, aren't about twisting yourself into a pretzel. In this episode, I discuss how you can improve your people skills without becoming a people-pleaser. I describe peoples' reactions when I set up boundaries for the first time. I explain why people-pleasing personalities find it difficult to say no to others. I also underscore the relationship between self-worth and the ability to set boundaries and enumerate the top three skills you need to become an effective leader of your organization and your own life. “These people skills and the difficult conversations are what you need to have so you can pay attention to your own life.” - Mark Silverman This week on Mastering Overwhelm: The difference between being a golden retriever and an organizational leader How to be a leader for your organization and yourself Setting boundaries and why it's tough to say no Why it's sometimes difficult to create accountability and strong agreements with people Creating other leaders in the organization Being honest about what you want and what you're willing to do Why setting boundaries requires some self-worth and self-esteem The first time I set boundaries Mastering Overwhelm - Set Yourself Free to Enjoy Your Success Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Mastering Overwhelm Podcast. It has been a few weeks since Naomi Judd passed away. Naomi, alongside her daughter Wynonna, formed The Judds, a successful country music act that rocked the 80s and 90s. To say that I love The Judds is an understatement. Way back from 2008 to 2009—when I was living with depression and suicidal thoughts—I looked for reasons to not take my life. I thought about my children, cobalt blue, chocolate chip cookies, and The Judds. As long as I had them, I could keep going. So, when the news that Naomi had taken her own life came out, it hit hard. In this episode, I discuss Naomi Judd and mental health. I describe how we tend to suffer in silence when we have mental illness and how we bury trauma instead of confronting it. Daniel Landau is the Founder and Executive Director of Mens Helpline, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting men seeking emotional support after losing a child due to a miscarriage, still birth, and infertility. Following a successful career as the head of various organizations’ fundraising, sales, and business development departments, Daniel and his wife experienced the emotional trauma of losing a child due to a miscarriage. After realizing there were many resources available for women experiencing infant loss, but very few available for men, Daniel shifted the course of his career - and life - and started the Mens Helpline organization. In addition to working full-time at Mens Helpline, Daniel is also a Board member for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation and the host of the Men Talk Podcast. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Non Profit Management and Leadership from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Daniel joins me today to share his story of losing a child due to a miscarriage and the challenges he faced to find emotional support. We discuss how the concept of Mens Helpline began and why traditional support groups aimed to help women through the trauma of losing a child are not always as effective for men. We discuss how Mens Helpline offers a unique way for men to gain support from other men suffering from the grief of losing a child and why its critical for men to share their emotions and be open to communicating their feelings with their spouse. We also discuss the five stages of grief, strategies men can use to cope with grief, and how the grieving process can help you become a stronger, more empathetic spouse. “Grief does open up opportunities at the end of the day. You never know why it happens, but - at the end of the day - when it does happen, and you accept it, it makes you stronger.” - Daniel Landau This week on Mastering Overwhelm: Daniel’s personal experience with losing a child due to a miscarriage The challenges many men face when seeking emotional support Why men often refrain from attending support groups and group therapy How Mens Helpline provides support to men suffering from miscarraige, infant loss, and infertility Daniel’s advice to men suffering from the emotional strain of losing a child The importance of keeping the lines of communication open with your spouse The 5 stages of grief and why it’s critical to find an outlet to help you cope Connect with Daniel Landau: Mens Helpline Mens Helpline on Instagram Mens Helpline on Facebook Podcast: MenTalk MenTalk Facebook Group Daniel Landau on LinkedIn Mastering Overwhelm - Set Yourself Free to Enjoy Your Success Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of the Mastering Overwhelm Podcast. An ancient rabbi from the time of Socrates taught that we humans are like the Ark of the Covenant. The most sacred relic of the Israelites, the Ark was a wooden chest covered in pure gold with an elaborate lid called the Mercy Seat. Relating humanity to a gold-covered wooden box may be confusing, but if we examine the dynamic between how we present ourselves to the world and what we perceive to be our shortcomings, we may understand our true value underneath the wood. In this episode, I discuss why humanity is very much like the Ark of the Covenant. I share my experiences during my recent travel to Israel and highlight the importance of spending time with your adult children. I also underscore our oneness with that force called Life and invite you to dig deeper than your flaws and shortcomings. “Like the Ark of the Covenant, you have that wood—that shortcoming underneath the gold. When you encounter the word “overwhelm,” what are the things that immediately come to your mind? Your kids? Work? Or the stream of news about COVID-19? What if I told you that overwhelm isn’t caused by something external to you? You see, as a recovering people-pleaser, I used to get overwhelmed whenever someone made a request; I didn’t have the fortitude to say no. But once I understood that I could decline, agree, or renegotiate a request, I realized that it wasn’t these people asking for my time that caused my overwhelm. In this episode, I discuss what’s causing overwhelm in our lives—and how you can manage them.
