For almost 20 years they've sat in prisons in Indonesia, for trying to smuggle heroin out of Bali, but the five remaining members of the so-called Bali Nine could be returned to Australia soon. As a former foreign correspondent, it's a story Sam Hawley knows well, because she went inside Kerobokan prison for a week in 2017. She spoke with two members of the Bali Nine, Si Yi Chen and Matt Norman and has followed their story ever since. Today, Sam speaks with Cindy Wockner, who was also a correspondent at the time, about the deal being worked on that might bring them home. Featured: Cindy Wockner, ABC journalist, author of The Pastor and the Painter and co-author of Bali 9: The Untold Story
Headlines: The Greens back Labor's housing bill, Israel to vote on Hezbollah ceasefire, Google, Meta and X react to social media ban, and Wicked enjoys a bumper weekend at the Aussie box office. Deep Dive: The Bali Nine were a group of nine Australians convicted for attempting to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin out of Indonesia in April 2005. It sounds like a deal with the Indonesian government might be underway – but what would repatriation look like, why would we want them in Australia, and why has this group been such a big deal for so long? Bishop Tim Harris is a long-time advocate for the release of the Bali Nine, having visited members of the group at Kerobokan prison and working with their families back home. He joins Sacha Barbour Gatt for this episode of The Briefing to explain why he thinks it's time for the remaining members to return home. What do Gordon Ramsey's brother, drug traffickers, rapists, gangsters, terrorists, thieves, and some of the unluckiest tourists in the world have in common? They've all spent time in Bali's infamous Kerobokan prison, otherwise known as Hotel K. Built around 40 years ago to house 300 inmates, Hotel K is now home to over 1400, over three-quarters of whom are in for drug charges, in a country with some of the most draconian drug laws on the planet. Welcome to Indonesia, where being caught with narcotics could end with you with your back against a wall, staring down the barrels of a firing squad. Ben Quilty is one of Australia's most celebrated artists. Whether he's painting the portrait of fellow artist Margaret Olley, of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan, of Jimmy Barnes or even of his old Torana, his style finds a heart and depth not often seen. I first met Ben when he working closely with the Bali 9 (particularly Myuran Sukumaran) using art therapy to help Myu as he sat confined in Kerobokan prison. When the day came for Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran to face death by firing squad, Ben Quilty led the charge to stand for mercy, gathering people from all backgrounds to campaign against the death penalty. It didn't succeed. But Ben's passion for commitment to the cause is just one of many instances where this artist and humanitarian has fought tooth and nail for justice. When he was a teenager, art was Ben Quilty's salve. As an adult, his work continues to help and heal him and those around him. Across five songs, Ben Quilty took part in music therapy. Paul Kelly - ‘Firewood and Candles' The Lemonheads - ‘The Outdoor Type' PJ Harvey - ‘This Mess We're In (ft. Thom Yorke)' The Beatles - ‘Blackbird' Jimmy Barnes - ‘Still On Your Side (ft. Bernard Fanning)'
