Professor Ed Ketz of Penn State joins the show to discuss audits' current state and future. We delve into the relevance of audits and explore the value of unqualified opinions in making audits meaningful. The discussion also touches on the overstandardization of audit reports and how this can lead to investor misunderstandings. Professor Ketz brings a unique perspective, sparking a debate on whether the existence of the unqualified opinion creates value rather than the content within. The episode ends with a brainstorm on potential regulation improvements to improve audit quality and usefulness.Meet Our Guest, Ed KetzWebsite: https://directory.smeal.psu.edu/k55LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ed-ketz-7982421a7Need CPE?Get CPE for listening to podcasts with Earmark: https://earmarkcpe.comSubscribe to the Earmark Podcast: https://podcast.earmarkcpe.comGet in TouchThanks for listening and the great reviews! The Bet Halevi tells us when anything that comes our way, in any new situation that arises, or when success happens as well, a person has to understand, “It's not the cause that's the means that brought about the profit, it's the opposite. Because it was decreed on Rosh Hashanah that he would get a profit, that is what caused this means to become available to him. For example, for a while, many people in the Syrian community profited from having lucrative licenses. If you had a Disney license and you put a Disney character on your pajamas or whatever it may be, you were successful. So if a person got a great license and he was making a lot of money, he might say to himself, “ Wow, I made so much money because I had this license. But the Bet Halevi says no . Rather , Because you were supposed to make so much money, that's why you got the license.” It's actually the other way around. What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Rav Dessler says this is a concept we have to constantly reiterate because the way we see things in this world is like a person peeking through a keyhole, seeing a pen writing on a paper. If the viewer didn't know better, he would think that the pen writes on its own. Of course, the pen writes only because someone is holding it. The pen's movement is the effect , not the cause. Similarly, when a general leads his army to victory, his triumph is the cause, and his power is the effect. But we have to understand that in reality, that's not what's happening. In reality, the ultimate cause for everything is Hashem's decree. Another example: The Brisker Rav said that when a person has a hole in his pocket and money falls through, he shouldn't say, “ Oy, I have a hole in my pocket! That's why I lost my money.” It's the other way around. Because you were supposed to lose your money, you got a hole in your pocket. I call this the Upside-down theory, because it causes us to look at the world the opposite of the regular way of looking at things. We look at things with cause and effect, not understanding that it has nothing to do with the seeming natural cause. The Bet Halevi brings this out from a midrash from a pasuk in Parashat Miketz , The pasuk says, “ It was after two years, that Paroah had a dream.” On that it says, that's what the pasuk in Iyov means, where it says, “There's an end to darkness.” The word for end is Ketz, the same as Miketz/ at the end of two years. The midrash says, “ There was a certain amount of time that Yosef was supposed to spend in jail, so that's when Paroah had the dream.” What is the lesson in this midrash? The Bet Halevi explains that we should not think that Paroah's dream after two years, is what got Yosef out of jail. It's the opposite. It was decreed that Yosef would stay in jail for two years, based on the fact that Yosef said, twice, ‘ Remember me,' for which he was punished with two additional years. So it was the decree of the two years that came first. And now that the decree was up, that is why Paroah had the dream. Paroah had the dream because the time was up, not the opposite. This is such an important rule. A certain couple didn't have children for many years. They finally decided, when they heard a certain Sadik was in town, to go to him for a beracha. So after being married for 10 years, they got a blessing, and they had a child nine months later. But they started regretting, “If only we would've gone to this Sadik years earlier, we would've saved ourselves all this pain.” Then someone told them that it was actually the opposite. It was only because the time had come that they ended up going to this Sadik . It wasn't meant to be until then. This is a very important rule in how to look at life. Always look at life that it's the decree first. Never second guess yourself, “ If I would've done this….If I would've done that.” Now is the time. And that's why it happened now . There's a time for everything. When the time comes, that is when the salvation comes. Have a wonderful day.

Analyzing the first Rashi in the Parsha. Why is it so essential that the time of the redemption be concealed?
MI KETZ Is an end time shadow PARASHA - there's a calamity in the land of Israel which leads the inhabitants to come to Egypt - the world, for a solution to their problem. Download the 2021-2022 Eighth Edition Torah To The Tribes Parashah
Today's class is dedicated Le'ilui Nishmat Yitzhak ben Chana, Mr. Irving Missry a'h, by his family, on his 22nd yarzheit. When Yaakov Avinu gave the final blessing to his children, he called them in and said, “ Gather and I will tell you what will happen to you in the future.” And then again, he said “ Gather and listen, sons of Yaakov…” What is this back-and-forth? Rashi tells us that the midrash says that Yaakov Avinu saw that among the letters of the Shevatim , there was no ח Chet or ט Tet. And he wanted to tell them what the future would be, but he saw that they did not have a ק kuf or צ sadi , which spells ketz/ end, in their names either . What does this mean? The letters chet and tet spell the word Chet , which means, “ sin .” So that was good, right? But why didn't they have the letters that spell “ Ketz / end ?” The Chatam Sofer says something fascinating about this pasuk. As we have mentioned in the past, the sin of Sinat hinam/baseless hatred is worse than the three cardinal sins, because the sin of Sinat Hinam was, in the words of the Gemara,“ not revealed.” And because the sin was not revealed, the end was not revealed. The first Bet HaMikdash was destroyed for sins that there were in the open, so the end was revealed as well. It was a 70 year sentence. But the second Bet HaMikdash was destroyed due to sins of the heart, Sinat hinam, which was under cover, so the end was not revealed. That is why we are still in exile. The fact that the letters for Chet/ sin were not there was a problem. The sin could not be seen, and therefore, the ketz , the ending could not be seen either. That is why Yaakov Avinu told them to gather twice- because if you gather and there is no Sinat hinam , then things can be worked out in the end, and Yaakov would be able to tell them what would happen.. if they did Teshuva , everything would work out. But when we are separated, there is no way the geula / redemption can come. As we have said, even Teshuva doesn't work in a generation where there is Sinat hinam. We have to constantly work on this concept, because the Second Bet HaMikdash was destroyed due to Sinat Hinam, and the third will only be rebuilt when we fix the sin of Sinat hinam. So that is our job- to bring the chet of Sinat hinam above the surface, to be aware of it, because that is the first step. It's a silent killer, if you aren't aware of it. The more aware we become of Sinat hinam, the closer we are to fixing it, and the more the Ketz- the end of time , will be revealed as well.

If you've listened this month, you know that we're celebrating Dads here in June and, specifically, we're talking with folks who were greatly influenced by their fathers. This week's guest is particularly intriguing because it can be fascinating when a son or daughter decides to follow in his or her father's footsteps...especially when that's in the media.Jim King was a legendary journalist, working for the Chicago Tribune and then a couple of radio stations before eventually helping to launch WQAD-TV up in the Quad Cities area -- and he had a couple of interesting stops in the middle. For nearly 40 years, Jim King's oldest son, Kris Ketz, has been a fixture at KMBC-TV and two of Jim's grandsons -- Kris' sons -- have followed in his footsteps...one in radio and one in TV.In case you're not familiar with Kris, here's part of his credentials: he is an Emmy-award winning anchor and investigative reporter, having captured a Midwest Emmy for best anchor in 2008. He also won in 1991 for an in-depth report on the influence of the Ku Klux Klan in the Kansas City area. He was nominated for a 2003 Emmy for best anchor, and nominated for a 2011 Regional Emmy award for “general assignment reporting.” In 2015 he was one of four local news anchors chosen to interview President Barack Obama in a one-on-one interview.Kris is a graduate of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 18 as a weekend news anchor for radio station WQUA in Moline, Ill. He progressed to afternoon and morning anchor, until he became the station's news director. And in 1998, about a year before Jim King died unexpectedly, Kris and Jim co-anchored the Father's Day edition of KMBC 9 News at 10.Kris takes a swing at our Pregame Batting Practice and then discusses his dad's legacy, following in his footsteps, and being the father of two in the media.
