Justin Farmer is one of the most recognizable people in Atlanta. He spent 17 years as the evening news anchor on WSB-TV, Atlanta's top-rated news station, and one of the biggest local market news stations in the country. News was a Farmer family business; Justin's father, Don Farmer, was an ABC news correspondent, a founding CNN anchor, and later the evening news anchor on WSB in Atlanta, a job he held until 1997. Ten years later, Justin landed the same job, at the same station. But let's rewind: this all meant that Justin grew up with an inside track to history. While he graduated from Boston College with a degree in political science, his family legacy and several internships at WSB naturally led him to broadcasting. His first TV job was as a sportscaster in Albany, Georgia. But a life in TV news is nomadic, and Justin moved from market to market before eventually landing back home in Atlanta and working for WSB. In 2007, he finally landed at the anchor desk. Everything was going well until the early 2020s, when in the span of 14 months, Justin lost both his biological parents and his beloved WSB co-anchor, Jovita Moore. This series of traumatic losses caused him to rethink what he wanted from life. He challenged himself to do something different, and his passion for investing and wealth management emerged as his new career goal. It wasn't an easy path. Studying for the Series 65 - Uniform Investment Adviser Law Exam, is a full-time job itself, but Justin climbed that mountain around his very high-profile full-time job. He passed the first time he took it. Then, on November 26, 2024, he signed off from WSB-TV with three hilarious words and launched Exit Wealth, a private investment firm that works with ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Our interview with Justin happened just weeks after he embarked on his second act. In this episode, Justin shares his history in TV news, some of the fun stories that are always part of live TV, his painful turning point, the thought process behind leaving what appears to be a “cushy” job, and the mountains he had to scale to make his second act a reality. Learn more about Justin by Googling his name and learn more about Exit Wealth by visiting their website. Second Act Stories theme music: "Between 1 and 3 am" by Echoes

Florida TV News Anchor Arrested for Drunk Driving On December 5, 2018 Florida morning news anchor Farron Salley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. This video presents the entirety of Salley's traffic stop, field sobriety testing, and her testy exchanges with law enforcement. Remarkably, on February 8, 2019 Assistant State Attorney Ryan G. Myers filed a memo in State of Florida v. Farron La Trice Salley, stating that "Although there was probable cause to make an arrest, the evidence cannot prove all legally required elements of the crime alleged and is insufficient to support a criminal prosecution." And with that, all charges against Salley were dropped. A copy of that filing as well as Salley's breath testing refusal is included at the end of this video. During the pendency of Salley's DUI case the WPBF anchor was suspended from her on-air duties, but when the charges against her were dropped Salley was quickly back in her former position. But the story doesn't end there. In late-June 2019 a few minutes of footage from her stop were published, resulting in WPBF "reassessing the impact of the incident." Shortly thereafter Salley resigned.

We began in earnest critique mode and got stuck there during this episode. But we also managed to pivot into appreciation as we divided the question. There's both good and bad in how easily we Davids jump to conclusions about how we would improve something if it were ours to upgrade. As we groped our way down humility's spiral staircase we ultimately celebrated those who contribute advice to us…even when it's unsolicited.
When I was 28 years old, I packed up my things and moved to Billings, Montana to become a television news anchor and reporter. I knew I was getting out of my comfort zone, but I had no idea how far. The person who helped me through it--my colleague, Jonathan Marcus--is my guest on this episode. We reminisce about our experiences working in local news; living in Montana; and realize that over the years we've both had the same idea: that we should write a screenplay or a novel--or something... because truly, as our experience working at KULR-8 showed us, the truth can be stranger than fiction. From the one-armed cameraguy who prowled the Montana highways all night long looking for footage, to the inappropriate news director; from drinking on the job to getting hit on in local bars... you can't make this stuff up. And we didn't. In this episode:How Jon ended up in Montana (02:21)Elizabeth's initial impressions of the station (and of Jon) (04:04)Some of the craziness that took place at the station (09:28)How Jon saved Elizabeth her first time anchoring (13:10)Being recognized around town (16:00)Elizabeth's experience being critiqued for superficial qualities (23:03)What should you do if you want to get into the business? Alcohol is an area of life where you can really drift if you don't bring some intentionality to it. So in the first episode we interviewed Pete Sousa, a TV News Anchor and ESPN Play by Play Sports analyst who hit rock bottom through alcohol abuse, entered AA and had to rebuild his life in his early 30s. That was a look into the extreme and devastating effects of addictive alcohol abuse. And even though Bryan and I never had an addictive relationship with alcohol, through Pete's story we could sure as hell see how we'd used booze to mask insecurities, numb fears and quite frankly…just fit in. But I've been alcohol free for about 6 years now, and I'm never going back. There was never a moment where I declared I'm not drinking anymore. Alcohol just faded out of my life the more and more intentional I got, and the less and less alcohol aligned with where I was going. Bryan still drinks socially, albeit far less regularly than he did even just a few years ago. In this Episode What an alcohol free life could feel like The friction you may experience when curtailing your drinking The relationships that may change as a result How to build a vibrant and fun social life without the social lubrication The impact on your body of going alcohol free

As a refugee from Vietnam, Lily yearned for a sense of security and stability. Lily has been in transition her entire life, from leaving Saigon, to following her career as a News Anchor across the country, to coming back home to Houston. Finding the right home is the biggest emotional purchase of our lives. She knows, because she's done it in different cities, and she understands how tough the decision can be. Lily's roots came full circle, and she's grateful to be firmly planted here. She is finally back in Houston, and she will help you find a place around town where you, too, can call home. Lily was a Broadcast Journalist for 21 years, most recently as a Morning News Anchor at KHOU-TV, the CBS affiliate in Houston.
