Kim Folsom is the Founder & CEO of Founders First Capital Partners, a platform focused on growing and funding small, revenue-generating, service-based businesses that are led by diverse founders. Check out their resources and services and apply here: https://foundersfirstcapitalpartners.com/lp-v1/ A Maine native, Kim’s interest in entrepreneurship was sparked by her father, a Navy officer who wanted to start a company after his retirement. Then, as she began to sell cookies as part of her local Girl Scout troop, Kim developed an affinity for sales that she wanted to capitalize on as she grew older. After graduating from San Diego State University, Kim noticed a lack of women of color starting companies, which made her route to entrepreneurship a tedious one.   Kim’s first company was Seminar Source, which she then sold to spend some time consulting for service-based businesses in order to balance motherhood and an MBA program at Pepperdine with work. Kim then went on to build and sell five more companies, with Founders First being her seventh venture.  All throughout her career, Kim has always placed a special emphasis on diversifying the entrepreneurship sphere and has endured five economic recessions (the current one being her fifth). That’s why Founders First is many things: an incubator, accelerator, and program provider for the community to help prep companies for funding. Tune in as Kim joins host Neal Bloom and guest co-host Alex Waters, Director of CONNECT ALL, to discuss her journey as an entrepreneur in the San Diego tech scene. What do you do when you’re one of the first women of color in your professional field? You break through those gates, that’s what. Today, I’m talking with Kim Folsom, a software engineer turned entrepreneur and investor, about how she broke through the glass ceiling in her male-dominated industry. When Kim was advancing in her career, she kept getting held back by men, saying this field “wasn’t for women.” Her experience, as a woman of color, isn’t unusual, unfortunately. Kim decided to strike out on her own to help other minority women launch their own companies. Kim owns two companies. Lift Development Enterprises is a not for profit business accelerator and incubator program offering support for women starting out in business. Founders First Capital Partners is a for-profit investment business. Today, we’re talking about the challenges that women of color experience when seeking capital investment. Kim also shares some stories from her career that explain why representation in business matters. Once one woman of color has made an advancement, it paves the way for others to follow in their footsteps. Kim explains what makes her want to invest in a business. From personality traits, qualities, and attributes to business plans and existing investment, it really is about getting a complete view. We also look at why it’s so important to build and maintain a positive relationship with your investors. Have you felt held back by the gatekeepers in your career? Are you looking for investment into your business? Do you know if you have the qualities potential investors are looking for? In This Episode: What it’s like running a non-profit alongside a for-profit business What challenges women of color face when getting business capital Why representation matters when you need to “prove” you can do it What personality traits are helpful when moving forward in business What the best way to approach a potential coach is What qualities and attributes businesses look for when considering investment What the stages of business investment are Why you need to build relationships with potential and current investors   Quotes: “I’ve always done what the guys have done and figured out a way that works for me and so I'm gonna find a way.” (4:42) “Be able to accept no as an answer and just know that sometimes that’s not never, it’s just not now.” (11:38) “People always love to tell you about what they did and how they overcame problems, or if they could have one it again, what they would do.” (14:21) “Just because someone may have the financial means to invest doesn’t mean they will invest.” (24:08)   Links: Lift Development Enterprises Follow Lift Development Enterprises on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Find Founders First Capital Partners Follow Founders First Capital Partners on Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn   Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Keep up with everything Women In Business Follow me, Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn KidsCare Home Health   Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start?
