What happens when your lifestyle practice takes off faster than you ever expected?Andy Panko, founder of Tenon Financial, didn't set out to build a firm. After leaving the corporate finance world in 2019, his goal was simple: work with 50 clients, enjoy flexibility, and ease into retirement on his own terms. But within two years, he was at capacity—and suddenly facing a new question: Now what?In this episode, Andy shares how he navigated that inflection point and grew Tenon Financial without sacrificing the lifestyle he set out to protect. Rather than hiring assistants or junior staff to “scale,” he took a different route—bringing on experienced advisors with decades of prior careers who operate independently with their own client bases. The result is a lean team of three serving more clients without compromising autonomy or quality of life.Andy opens up about his approach to hiring, compensation, and why he places intentional limits on growth. “I don't want the business to consume me,” he says. “Since I started Tenon, I've never once felt like I had to go to work.”We also dive into industry-wide tensions around product sales and compensation structures. Andy, who owns an IUL policy himself but regularly calls out misleading marketing, offers a nuanced view on where insurance fits—and where it goes wrong. If you're a solo advisor wondering what comes next—or just want to hear what it looks like to grow without giving up control—this conversation is a must-listen. As Andy puts it: “When you take ‘just being about money' off the table, it's actually very liberating.”Andy's links and Social:retirementplanningeducation.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/andypanko/
How are your teachers' root systems? If you have the opportunity, ask an arborist talk about root systems and about the tree planting and care process. From root hairs to mycorrhizae, it's a fascinating world. But one that is mostly invisible to us and that tends to fall prey to our drive to control and manipulate what is visible to us. Melvin Lehman employs the metaphor of roots as he reflects on nearly four decades of teaching. He did his first teaching back in the early days of the Christian school movement when he observed much rapid planting driven by the need to quickly fill the empty spaces in all the new classrooms. We have better opportunities for cultivating strong and healthy roots today. But of course, this is not automatic and there are plenty of pressing reasons for ignoring our root systems. As a school leader, you are in a position to model the development of healthy roots and to care for those of your team. Without them, as Melvin says, we will be unable to access and appropriate the resources around them, however rich and abundant they may be. Here are some of the main recommendations that Melvin makes in his talk: Develop of the discipline of meditation and prayer Be wholesome (and holy) Accept new or challenging assignments Read widely and with a plan Teach in diverse situations Pursue stimulating and productive hobbies Master new and essential skills Surround yourself with stimulating and challenging people Take advanced courses of study This episode was first published on The Dock as "Intentional Growth:" https://thedockforlearning.org/lecture/intentional-growth-melvin-lehman/ More from Teachers Week 2012: https://thedockforlearning.org/series/fbep-teachers-week/teachers-week-2012/

I was a school teacher for 15+ years. Then, in the middle of life as a school teacher and married with 2 teenagers, I experienced a Spiritual Awakening. Nona Lim describes the sale of her eponymous brand as “accidental.” The way in which she positioned the company for success and an eventual exit, however, was anything but. Founded in 2014, Nona Lim Foods made a name for itself as a brand of better-for-you, easy-to-prepare Asian meals, including fresh noodles, broths and stir fry kits. Nona, who first joined us for an interview back in 2020, has long stressed the importance of product-market fit and a deep understanding of business fundamentals – two pillars that played a pivotal role in building a sustainable brand. Her focus and vision helped Nona Lim Foods achieve national distribution, securing shelf space in major retailers like Whole Foods, Target, Wegmans, and Kroger. In 2022, a serendipitous meeting led to the acquisition of Nona Lim Foods by DayDayCook, a food and content brand platform based in Hong Kong. The partnership was seen as a perfect fit, with DayDayCook's CEO highlighting their shared vision to bring delicious Asian dishes to the U.S., reimagined with clean ingredients for a modern, health-conscious audience. Nona continued to lead the brand as CEO until June of 2024. While the future of Nona Lim Foods is uncertain – its website is currently down and its social media has been inactive since July – Nona remains deeply engaged in the food and beverage industry as the chair of the board for the Specialty Food Association (SFA), which organizes the biannual Fancy Food Show. In this insightful conversation, Nona shares why founders should think intentionally about their "end goal," the importance of generating retail velocity without heavy marketing spend, and why having a well-organized data room is essential for raising funds or preparing for an exit. She also opens up about the emotional impact of selling a business that she built from the ground up. Show notes: 0:25: Nona Lim, Founder, Nona Lim Foods – On location in Las Vegas at the final edition of the Winter Fancy Food Show, Nona talks about the SFA's decision to rebrand and relocate the event and which booth expectedly drew crowds. Ray recalls her first appearance on Taste Radio in which she emphasized the power of saying "no" to prioritize the right opportunities, why she encourages founders to consider why they are building their businesses and why great packaging only works under certain conditions. Nona also discusses how she met and developed a good rapport with the CEO of her brand's eventual acquirer, the shifting dynamics of fundraising post-COVID and why she references Amy's Kitchen when giving advice to early-stage entrepreneurs. That's exactly what we're diving into in this new series Things I Wish I Would Have Known —unpacking the small changes that lead to big shifts in mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Dr. Michelle Robin and Bayleigh Petty reflect on the lessons they wish they'd known earlier, from brain health and digestion to heart health and habit change. It's not about regret—it's about growth, intention, and making realistic, consistent shifts that add up over time. So, take a deep breath, embrace where you are, and let's step into a healthier, more intentional future—one small change at a time. Key Takeaways: Prioritizing self-care isn't selfish—it's about being “self-full” so you can show up better for yourself and those around you. Small, intentional actions create lasting change. The healing journey isn't just about checking wellness boxes; it requires deep self-awareness and understanding your personal "why" to stay committed to growth. Habit change works best when it's realistic and sustainable—starting small and allowing room for flexibility leads to long-term success. Reflection without regret is key. Every past experience holds a lesson, and learning from it helps bridge the gap between knowing better and doing better. Being open to shift—physically, emotionally, or mentally—allows for continuous improvement. Progress doesn't happen overnight, but small adjustments over time lead to profound transformation. What if you could release trapped emotions from your body? Emotions are energy IN motion... and if we don't pay attention to our bodies and fully FEEL our emotions- they can and will get stuck in our body. Do you struggle with allergies? Migraines? Menstrual pain? Tennis Elbow? Are there parts of your body that just hurt and you have no idea why? I would 100% suggest reading this book and seeing if this process helps to relieve some/all of your symptoms. PS: I am not yet certified in the Emotion Code nor am I a doctor- I'm just here to share my experience and let you know that its changing my life.In the last two weeks I have been completely blown away by this book: The Emotion Code by Dr Bradley Nelson. I first heard about this book from a friend of mine over a year ago now. He mentioned the book and how it had helped him remove his "heart wall" so that he could open up to dating and being in a relationship again. I was immediately intrigued- but for some reason- kept putting off starting the book. 12 months later- I finally started it and within the first 5 chapters- my mind is blown and I'm already practicing with it on myself, my friends and family. I'm also already planning on going through his certification process! In this episode today I cover:-The main idea/concept behind this book.-I share my Mom's story and what she felt as she released an emotion related to her lymphoma. -I share my friend, Kristin Wise's story and her voice message where she talks about releasing a deep and powerful emotion.-I go through the emotion code process with myself to release a trapped emotion so you can see it and hear it straight from me. -How I'll be integrating this process into my coaching, workshops and retreatsI highly recommend reading the book and seeing if this process resonates for you. Here's to healing and freedom! Please email me with any questions: Mo@Iloveitwhen.org*************************************Hello! I met Katherine at a networking event in Everett, WA. I have LOVED learning about her journey because she shares it in such an authentic, real and vulnerable manner. Intentional Growth
Have you ever been to a retreat before? I organized and created my first retreat back in 2017. At the time- I was looking for something to shake up my current experience. I wanted an exciting experience that would give me a "pattern interrupt". Our subconscious runs 95% of our day- that means we're essentially on auto-pilot most of the time. Without intentional work- we could be repeating patterns/habits that we don't actually appreciate or benefit from. I LOVE retreats because they have provided me with an immense opportunity to interrupt my life, pause, reflect and make changes that impact me in a positive, joyful and meaningful way! This is why I've continued to offer them here at I Love It When, LLC.In today's episode I share with you a bit more about why I love retreats + the opportunity you have to join me in Sedona, Arizona this November 14th-16th 2024 for the "Manifest With The Angels" Retreat with Seph Dietlin! I share a few clips from our info session where Melina Fuhrmann with Oasis in Sedona describes her retreat center where we'll be hosting our morning sessions- and she talks a bit about the experience that she'll be facilitating for us out on the red rocks of Sedona! In this episode today I cover:-Why and how retreats can be a powerful opportunity for you-How this retreat came to be-The agenda for Manifest With The Angels in Sedona, Arizona-How you can sign up today!Book your retreat ticket today $888: Manifest with the Angels Retreat!Watch the full info session here: Manifest with the Angels Retreat Info SessionLearn more about Seph Dietlin here: Talk To My AngelsLearn more about Melina and her retreat center: Oasis in SedonaPlease email me with any questions: Mo@Iloveitwhen.orgI would LOVE to see you in Sedona!*************************************Hello! How do you know you're on the right path? One of my coaching clients asked me this question last week- and I felt inspired to lean into that conversation. This was a question I used to ask myself ALL the time- ever since high school. I felt driven by this question. Once I reached high school it felt like everyone wanted to know: what are you doing next? What do you want to do in your life? What do you love to do? What are you DOING next?! I started to play with the question because I truly didn't know! I would say things like, "I'm going to be Indiana Jones- cause I want adventure and travel!". I also very much felt like there was a "right" path and a "wrong" path- it was very binary thinking. I didn't want to take the wrong path, the wrong turn, the WRONG way. I also felt that desire to be ME- I wanted it all to feel authentic and real. In today's episode I share how I've come to let go of what the "right" path is, and how I know I'm following my highest and best path. In this episode today:-I pull 3 cards from my Energy Oracle deck and talk about what they may mean for whoever is listening.-I talk about my reflection process and how important that is when working to manifest.-The three things I look for now that tell me I'm on the "right" path: 1. Synchronicities abound.2. You're making decisions based on what YOU want/desire- not someone else.3. There's an ease + flow to it. -I lead you through a meditation at the end (so be sure you're not driving when you listen!).Please email me and share what came up in the meditation for you: Mo@Iloveitwhen.org Also- if you listened to this episode- take a screenshot and share it to your IG story + tag me. Just a few days ago I decided to throw a poll up on my Instagram story- and see if there was something in particular you all wanted to hear more about. I gave a few suggestions and the one that stuck out was "BE-ing vs DO-ing". This was interesting to me because I feel like this is something I've talked about quite a bit- and this tells me that it needs to be talked about more. It makes sense- this isn't something that is easy to understand and implement- it's taken me the last 6-7 years to understand what that means and begin to actually integrate it into my life. In this episode today I go in depth on this topic and share straight from my heart- per usual:-How my life was starting to continuously grate on me- causing me to feel irritated, annoyed, frustrated and sometime angry. -What i used to cope with these feelings and ignore them. -The impact meditation had on shifting my ability to create more space for myself and make different decisions.-How starting my business forced me to face these feelings.-How I started to intentionally slow down and do far less.-My schedule now vs 5 years ago.-The criteria I use when deciding what to do next in my business.-The 4 steps I see now that I used to go from DO-ing to BE-ing.If you listened to this episode- take a screenshot and share it to your IG story + tag me. I'd love to hear your #1 takeaway or "aha" moment. Or if you felt resistance to the entire topic- that is EPIC- share that! Resistance is a sign for me- a sign that there's something within that topic that I need to lean in to. Let me know what resonates with you from todays episode!
