Kiwi Camara is the CEO and co-founder of DISCO, a publicly traded legal tech company providing cloud-native, AI-powered solutions that simplify ediscovery, case management, and legal document review for law firms and enterprises. Kiwi's extensive background includes a B.S. in computer science, as well as J.D. from Harvard Law School and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford.We discuss what is DISCO, and how lawyers can use it to streamline their work with legal documents and case files. Kiwi also shares how he got the idea to start his own company and what it takes to innovate in the legal space. He also shares how he grew DISCO, from receiving the first check from investors to IPO in 2021.We talk about the business rationale behind DISCO and why law firms adopt these types of legal solutions. Kiwi Camara skipped high-school and graduated college at the ripe old-age of 16. He was 19 when he graduated Harvard Law School. This youngster formed a close friendship with his oldest classmate and shortly after graduating they formed their own commercial litigation law firm.It took them six months to land their first client, but they persisted. Together they built a successful litigation firm.Realizing one of their client's was spending lots of money on discovery that could be automated, they built an automation tool for that client, then rolled it out to their other clients.A short while later they spun out DISCO as a separate legal-tech company.Last year Kiwi took DISCO public.Check out Kiwi's awesome story!Joseph & Aaron

In July, the e-discovery company DISCO became one of just a handful of legal technology companies ever to go public, listing on the New York Stock Exchange. That made it the third legal tech company this year to go public, after no U.S. legal tech company had gone public since 2002.  On this episode of LawNext, Kiwi Camara, DISCO's cofounder and CEO, joins host Bob Ambrogi to discuss DISCO's public offering and its implications for the company and the broader legal tech market. He also shares his thoughts on the key factors driving the explosion of interest in legal tech, and offers his predictions on where the legal market is heading.  At age 16, Camara earned a bachelor's degree in computer science, and at age 19, became the youngest-ever graduate of Harvard Law School. After a clerkship with 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Harris Hartz, Camara studied for a doctorate in economics at Stanford, taught corporate law at Northwestern, and was a founding partner of Camara & Sibley LLP in Houston. Fair use in particular areas. Computer code. The Oracle America, Inc. v Google, Inc. case revolves around the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) used to define functionality of the Java programming language, created by Sun Microsystems and now owned by Oracle Corporation. Google used the APIs' definition and their structure, sequence and organization (SSO) in creating the Android operating system to support the mobile device market. Oracle had sued Google in 2010 over both patent and copyright violations, but after two cycles, the case matter was narrowed down to whether Google's use of the definition and S S O of Oracle's Java APIs (determined to be copyrightable) was within fair use. The Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against Google, stating that while Google could defend its use in the nature of the copyrighted work, its use was not transformative, and more significantly, it commercially harmed Oracle as they were also seeking entry to the mobile market. The case, should this ruling hold, could have a significant impact on developing products for interoperability using APIs, such as with many open source projects. Documentary films. In April 2006, the filmmakers of the Loose Change series were served with a lawsuit by Jules and Gédéon Naudet over the film's use of their footage, specifically footage of the firefighters discussing the collapse of the World Trade Center. With the help of an intellectual property lawyer, the creators of Loose Change successfully argued that a majority of the footage used was for historical purposes and was significantly transformed in the context of the film. They agreed to remove a few shots that were used as B-roll and served no purpose to the greater discussion. The case was settled and a potential multimillion-dollar lawsuit was avoided. This Film Is Not Yet Rated also relied on fair use to feature several clips from copyrighted Hollywood productions. The director had originally planned to license these clips from their studio owners but discovered that studio licensing agreements would have prohibited him from using this material to criticize the entertainment industry. This prompted him to invoke the fair use doctrine, which permits limited use of copyrighted material to provide analysis and criticism of published works. File sharing. In 2009, fair use appeared as a defense in lawsuits against file sharing. Charles Nesson argued that file-sharing qualifies as fair use in his defense of alleged file sharer Joel Tenenbaum. Kiwi Camara, defending alleged filesharer Jammie Thomas, announced a similar defense. In this episode, we're joined by Kiwi Camara, the Chief Executive Officer of DISCO. Kiwi covers, among other things, his advice to in-house clients on driving more value in the eDiscovery process through the smart use of technology and leveraging review decisions over multiple cases. He has a B.S. in computer science and earned his JD at 19 from Harvard Law School. Kiwi practiced law in Houston, Texas and had a commercial litigation practice. One of his largest clients asked him to take a holistic look at the company’s eDiscovery program and spend. That was the first time that he systematically reviewed demonstrations from eDiscovery vendors. He was unsatisfied with the speed and overall performance of the tools. As a result, Kiwi built a custom solution for that client that was “blazing fast and super easy” to use. In 2013, he started selling DISCO to other customers. The signature of DISCO to this day, reported Kiwi, is performance and the ease of use of the technology.DISCO is a full-service eDiscovery company, handling collection and ingest, processing, review and productions from its Austin, Texas, headquarters. It operates throughout the United States, as well as in Canada and Europe through an office in London. DISCO has a proprietary software platform called DISCO eDiscovery and offers a full suite of services, such as project management, data operations, and a full managed review operation. Finally, DISCO has a suite of tools for case management, both before and after eDiscovery, called DISCO Case Builder. Whitney Harper is the central figure in one of the most recent anti-piracy court battles being waged by the Recording Industry Association of America. She’s only one of any number of accused illegal downloaders. But what makes her case different? Whitney could be considered an “Innocent Infringer”—because she did not understand she was illegal filesharing. But whether this distinction matters depends on the outcome of her trial, which may soon be headed to the US Supreme Court. Charles Nesson spoke with both Whitney and her legal counsel, Kiwi Camara.

At $80,000 per song, the 24 tracks Jammie Thomas-Rasset is accused of sharing on Kazaa could represent the most expensive album of all time. Last week a federal jury suggested the fine, adding up to $1.92 million, seemed like a fair price for willful infringement. Thomas-Rasset’s pro bono legal team of Kiwi Camara and Joe Sibley promise to appeal the verdict in this, the first file sharing case to see trial. A conversation shortly before the trial showed a number of issues that indeed did not make it to court this time around – including the constitutionality of the RIAA’s investigative tactics.
