Today on the More Cheese Less Whiskers podcast we're talking with Aaron McRann from Penticton BC, and Aaron has a really neat product that helps people with wrist pain, to do bodyweight exercises, push ups, and things like that without any pain. This came out of a personal issue he was having and he figured out a way, with some ingenuity, to create these pushup blocks that allowed him to do pushups and body weight exercises without any pain. Now the issue is how do we get those in front of people who have this type of pain. This is a little bit of a different episode than we normally have because it's with someone with a physical product that solves one specific issue. We had a really great conversation and we went through the Before Unit profit activators and how we would approach this idea of solving all the wrist pain in the world by starting with all the wrist pain in Kentucky and BC. Today on the More Cheese Less Whiskers podcast I've got something special I'd love for you to hear. Two or three years ago, I was running full-page ads in Success Magazine telling about 'The Amazing Nine-Word Email That Revives Read Leads'. I was experimenting with a new approach to engaging with people who would respond to the ad, and it was really interesting because people who responded would call the ad, an article. I've posted the article in the show notes so you can see what I was doing, but the amazing thing was, we ran that ad for several months and averaged a 68% opt in on the landing page. This was cold traffic from a magazine ad, and what was even more amazing was that we would get over 40% engagement once people responded and left their name and email address. I used a very simple sequence to engage with people who requested a copy of the Email Mastery book. After they received a copy I'd invite people to get together with me on the phone to brainstorm some of their nine-word emails and subject lines. We would have group calls just like the very first one I'm going to share with you today, and you can see the landing page at emailmastery.com so you can reverse-engineer the process to see how it works. What was amazing to me was hearing people I've never met before, coming on and sharing the results they were getting with the nine-word email they read about in my 'article' in Success Magazine. They work in several States around New York, they've been in business for a long, long time, and Troy is an entrepreneur who's a student of the game! He has a long pedigree of taking action on all kinds of marketing ideas to build his business, and because of that, he's built something amazing. Now he has so much potential and so much opportunity that we had a great conversation about how to deploy these capacities, including this idea that when you can serve a lot of different people in a lot of different areas, one of the greatest things we can do is deploy our ability to select a single target market. That's going to be the big lesson in this episode. A lot of the time people set up their business so they can be selected by a wide variety of people. One of the things we have to understand when we're going out to develop our Before Unit, is that we are doing the selecting! You get to select who would be the ideal client. If you want to grow your business. If you've got the capacity to take on new people, rather than just open yourself up and take on whoever comes, we've got the opportunity to select who that person is. When you really understand that, it makes sense to think about who would be the largest check, who would be the most delightful, who would be the most convenient, who would be a lifetime client. Aaron helps personal trainers who work with people virtually, and one of the things we had a great conversation about is the idea of building your prototype. In order to scale something, you have to have a proof element and what I call the scale ready algorithm. So much of the frustration I see people experience with scaling is that they haven't taken the time to get things scale ready, and often that's about just investing time and energy in figuring out your protocol. Figuring out the best things that works for one of your ideal audience. Whoever you choose as a target market, it's about getting the core right, and then being able to scale from there. Once you get something scale ready, you may find it could be even centrally managed, and you could offer an entirely different service where you just deliver the result to people who just want to be personal trainers, or chiropractors or coaches or dentists, and don't want to be marketers or technicians. So much opportunity stems from your ability to crack this idea of getting the scale ready algorithm, and this episode is great to start thinking in that way. So, one of the things we talked about was how to get this word out, and towards the end of the call, we really came up with the idea of ideas, which is identifying potential clients for this service, and how do we get the message in front of them. That's really where a business like this is. When you have a business where you solve an ongoing problem or provide an ongoing solution for someone, and you create an experience they love, they have an opportunity to come back again and again and again. That's your great opportunity to build an amazing business. We ended by talking about the before unit, acquiring brand new business and thinking about how much you would cheerfully pay to develop a new customer, and we had a great little breakdown of how to think about business in that way. If you're a great freelancer, a great copywriter, a great web designer, and you're doing your work with clients, but every time you get a new client, you're creating original work and building a reputation with them, and there's no equity in that. There's not a sense that you're building assets that deliver recurring revenue for you. Whenever I have a conversation with a freelancer, with someone who's doing client work of any kind on a freelance, or agency or a consulting basis, the conversation inevitably turns to how can we create equity for you? Today on the More Cheese Less Whiskers podcast, we're going all the way across the pond to talk to Jonathan Slobom, and Jonathan has a unique situation in that he's a marketing consultant, working with what they call a business center in the UK. The set up is similar to what we would call a coworking space or an office where lots of different businesses gathered together, and they provide supportive services to those organizations. So we had a great conversation about the opportunities to really create something within their space, serving that business community. We talked about the Profit Activators, and how to be of service to the people they already have, and then, to create a unique opportunity by looking at what they have in terms of excess capacity they can redeploy.
