In this episode of Hunger for Wholeness, Ilia Delio speaks with scholar Robert Geraci about apocalyptic AI, robotics, transhumanist hope, and the religious stories embedded in technological imagination. Geraci traces how his study of robotics led him to notice strikingly religious themes in the writings of engineers and futurists: immortality, resurrection, salvation, and the future transformation of humanity.Together, Ilia and Robert explore the mid-20th-century roots of computer intelligence, the shadow of world war, and the deep eschatological hopes and fears that shaped early conversations about machines, minds, and human destiny. They consider how figures such as Hans Moravec, Ray Kurzweil, J. B. S. Haldane, Julian Huxley, Norbert Wiener, and Alan Turing reveal the religious imagination at work within technological culture.Later in the episode, the conversation turns toward technology, ecology, and responsibility. Rather than treating technology as the enemy, Ilia and Robert ask how human beings might reclaim the deeper narratives, values, and forms of belonging needed to guide technological development toward the flourishing of the whole Earth community.ABOUT ROBERT GERACIRobert M Geraci is the Knight Distinguished Chair for the Study of Religion & Culture at Knox College. In this episode, our special guests are Fr. James Searby, a parochial vicar at the Basilia, and Father Ken Geraci, a Fathers of Mercy priest, who recently led our parish mission. The topics they talked about ranged from practical marriage and family healing and prayer practices to the power of forgiveness to heal deep wounds. Please share this episode with friends and family members.
Father Ken Geraci shares a homily during the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It was given in the Basilica on March 15, 2026.
We start Lent with strong intentions. The fasting plan is clear. The prayer routine feels doable. The discipline is there. But somewhere in the middle of Lent, the struggle begins. The motivation fades, the routine breaks down, and we quietly give up. In this episode of Into the Desert, Fr. Ken Geraci and John Heinen explain why this exact moment is where real spiritual growth begins. The desert exposes the limits of self-reliance and reveals how much a man still depends on his own strength instead of God's grace. Instead of seeing failure as the end of Lent, this conversation reframes the struggle as the place where humility, surrender, and deeper conversion begin.
We can look disciplined on the surface while still clinging to comfort, control, security, and the illusion that what we have is our own. This conversation gets underneath the act of giving and presses on the deeper question: what am I holding onto? Fr. Ken Geraci and John Heinen talk about why almsgiving is more than generosity, why it exposes the heart, and how gratitude breaks the instinct to accumulate. If fasting teaches a man to master his appetites and prayer teaches him to abide in God, almsgiving teaches him to let go. It trains him to live open-handed before the Lord and to remember that everything he has has first been given. This is not just about money. It is about attachment, trust, possession, and whether a man lives like an owner or a steward.
Prayer becomes one of two things: a religious obligation or a strategy to get results. But it's not a productivity tool. It's not emotional therapy. And it's not a way to convince God of anything. In this week's Lent series, Fr. Ken Geraci and John Heinen cut through the purpose of prayer. If fasting makes room, prayer is where union happens. Prayer is where control dies, and where a man learns to be with God instead of trying to manage Him. Fr. Ken breaks down why so many men stall in prayer: they measure success by feelings, clarity, or outcomes. But real prayer is about fidelity, surrender, and transformation. It is less about talking and more about consenting to be changed.
It's time for a reset to the entire purpose of fasting. John shares how he spent years fasting the wrong way, treating it like self-mortification for the sake of self-control. Until a spiritual director challenged him: fasting isn't mainly about proving you can suffer. It's about making room for loving union with Christ. Fr. Ken explains why the Church gives a minimal fasting prescription. It's meant to be doable for everyone, including children, the elderly, and those with health issues. But if you're able-bodied and serious about Lent, the question becomes: what is Christ actually inviting you to do?
This Ash Wednesday, Fr. Ken Geraci and John Heinen go straight to the heart of Lent's first command: repent and believe. We're focusing on two concrete actions that we avoid until we're desperate: a real examination of conscience and a clean, simple confession. Not scrupulosity. Not vague generalities. An honest inventory of blind spots, weak spots, compromises, and missed opportunities for virtue.

Have you ever wondered how churches could better respond to disasters? Daniel Geraci's journey from healthy fast food entrepreneur to disaster relief pioneer reveals a powerful model that's transforming how Christians serve during crises. When Hurricane Katrina sent thousands to his Austin community in 2005, Daniel received a divine download - a vision for uniting churches to respond to disasters with coordination and compassion. What he discovered shocked him: emergency managers often consider churches "the second disaster" during crises due to well-meaning but untrained volunteers saying the wrong things at the wrong time. For full show note details, go to the episode webpage:

“We need to leverage the sea of Goodwill in the community to do more than just say ‘Thank you for your service.' Mentor, hire, help with the transition from active duty to civilian life.” - Dr. Joe GeraciI met Dr. Joseph Geraci on the advisory committee through "Face the Fight" a consortium/initiative; with the goal of reducing Veterans' suicide by 50% in 5 years. We review the crucial support mechanisms for veterans during their vulnerable transition period into civilian life, especially focusing on preventing suicide. It's alarming to see the immense challenges young veterans face, carrying double the risk of suicide compared to their peers. Joe shared some brilliant insights, particularly through the "Onward Ops" initiative, a partnership with Google that empowers us all to become certified sponsors and support our veterans more effectively. If you're moved by this cause, I strongly encourage you to visit onwardops.org—every small step truly counts. One of the most compelling takeaways from our conversation was Joe's emphasis on the need for empathy and understanding from mental health professionals and every individual in the community. His experience, bridging military service and psychology, is a powerful testament to how leadership and support can transform lives. Joe spoke about the strategic use of predictive analytics to identify at-risk veterans and the necessity of firearm safety in suicide prevention efforts. It's not just about evidence-based treatments; it's about creating a safe, compassionate space where veterans feel valued and understood. So, let's rise to the challenge together, acknowledge these brave men and women with more than just words, and take real, heartfelt actions to support their journey. On episode #178, I spoke with Fr. Ken Geraci about the need for Divine Mercy. Here are some key questions and topics from our discussion:Why Fr. Ken believes Jesus appeared to St. Faustina when He didThe need for Divine Mercy todayDivine Mercy Sunday. What is that? I should be praying the chaplet of divine mercy every single day. Why?And much more...Tune in for an insightful conversation!Biography:Fr. Ken Geraci, CPM, lived the life of the prodigal son for most of his young adult life. Raised in a nominally Catholic family, who only lived the externals of the faith, Fr. Ken left the Catholic Church for many years. During that time he earned a business degree and worked as a business profession in Advanced R&D and software testing; a few years into his career he joined a few of his co-workers in establishing a $4.5 million Internet software company. Focused on money, fitness, and success, he made little room for God; but God did not give up on him. During this journey, God presented him with challenges that forced him to question his personal beliefs and the question “What is Truth?” Through a series of conversions, years of struggle, study and questioning, Fr. Ken found his way from agnosticism, to non-denominational Christianity, and ultimately back to the Catholic Church.Fr. Ken joined the Fathers of Mercy in 2006 and was ordained in 2012. For two years, he served as an associate pastor of a medium sized parish and currently serves as a Missionary, webmaster and vocation director for the Fathers of Mercy. Fr. Ken has a great understanding of the personal and societal pressures that individuals face and knows what it is like to “hate coming to church.” His mission talks are for people of all levels of faith; from those who are madly in love with Jesus to those who struggle with church and religion.Fr. It's the final week before 4-H Summer project judging. This is thr worst week ever in houses with multiple kids and multiple projects. Danna's family is officially a 4-H family making posters and buying stocking up on rubber cement. GPS, do you follow it when it switches up your usual route? Bill and Kristin love to give good gifts. We gave the Geraci boys both gel blaster guns for their birthday. If you listened to last week's episode you know Mr. Branch (kids band director) was our guest. He treated us to cupcakes. This week he dropped off chocolate covered strawberries for us to sample. Only one catch….they are Ghost Pepper strawberries. Danna nearly died, Bill was being a real man keeping it cool and Kristin's lip were on fire. While we love Frosting and Fire cupcakes when he says it's HOT, he means it. Fr. Ken Geraci grew up Catholic, but left the faith as a young man. He chased after fortune in the business world, eventually founding a highly successful software company. Unable to find happiness in all the ways he though would bring fulfillment, he revisited the idea of faith, coming back first to belief in God, then in Christianity, and eventually back to the Catholic Church. As part of that journey back, he recognized a call to the priesthood with the Fathers of Mercy.

Contributor: Ricky Dhaliwal, MD Educational Pearls: What are DKA and HHS? DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis) and HHS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State) are both acute hyperglycemic states. DKA More common in type 1 diabetes. Triggered by decreased circulating insulin. The body needs energy but cannot use glucose because it can't get it into the cells. This leads to increased metabolism of free fatty acids and the increased production of ketones. The buildup of ketones causes acidosis. The kidneys attempt to compensate for the acidosis by increasing diuresis. These patients present as dry and altered, with sweet-smelling breath and Kussmaul (fast and deep) respirations. HSS More common in type 2 diabetes. In this condition there is still enough circulating insulin to avoid the breakdown of fats for energy but not enough insulin to prevent hyperglycemia. Serum glucose levels are very high – around 600 to 1200 mg/dl. Also presents similarly to DKA with the patient being dry and altered. Important labs to monitor Serum glucose Potassium Phosphorus Magnesium Anion gap (Na - Cl - HCO3) Renal function (Creatinine and BUN) ABG/VBG for pH Urinalysis and urine ketones by dipstick Treatment Identify the cause, i.e. Has the patient stopped taking their insulin? Aggressive hydration with isotonic fluids. Normal Saline (NS) vs Lactated Ringers (LR)? LR might resolve the DKA/HHS faster with less risk of hypernatremia. Should you bolus with insulin? No, just start a drip. 0.1-0.14 units per kg of insulin. Make sure you have your potassium back before starting insulin as the insulin can shift the potassium into the cells and lead to dangerous hypokalemia. Should you treat hyponatremia? Make sure to correct for hyperglycemia before treating. This artificially depresses the sodium. Should you give bicarb? Replace if the pH < 6.9. Otherwise, it won't do anything to help. Don't intubate, if the patient is breathing fast it is because they are compensating for their acidosis. References Andrade-Castellanos, C. A., Colunga-Lozano, L. Dr. Gaspere C. (Gus) Geraci joins us in this episode as we embark on an exciting journey to unravel the mysteries of finding the perfect job for healthcare practitioners. Whether you're a recent medical school graduate, undergoing fellowship, or a seasoned practitioner looking for a change, or anywhere in between, this episode is your comprehensive guide to navigating the intricate highways of physician employment. Dr. Gaspere Geraci received his undergraduate degree in Psychology before studying at the State University of New York at Buffalo to receive his M.D. Since 1980, Dr. Geraci has been a part of the healthcare system and gained experience and knowledge in multiple aspects of the industry. His specialty began in family medicine and then expanded to overall management as he started taking on administrative rolls. After moving from director and vice president positions, Dr. Geraci started a solo family practice. He became a expert using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and technology. His practice was recognized as a clinical leader in the care of diabetics and patients with coronary artery disease. While his practice was still running, Dr. Geraci signed on as a consulting medical director for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. In a bid to give a voice and a platform for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants (collectively Health Care Prescribers (HCP's)) to express their opinions on their workplaces, Dr. Geraci started a website called Rate Your Healthcare Employer (RYHE.org), a website that operates like Yelp for physicians. This website allows health care practitioners to anonymously review their employers on key metrics important to them, and allows their colleagues and the general public to view the reviews. Click here to find more about Dr. Geraci. In this episode, we discuss concerns you might have about finding a job and we answer questions like: What are the obstacles faced by physicians when trying to find a job? What are the important things to consider when choosing your job location? What steps do I need to take when searching for a job? What roles do personality types play in job search? + more Websites for employer review mentioned in this episode: Indeed.com Glassdoor.com Doximity.com Ryhe.org This episode is sponsored by Arthrex: Arthrex has been helping surgeons treat their patients better for more than 40 years.
