In an era when every other aspect of education has integrated at least some digital component, can we really expect standardized tests to stay the same as they have since the mid-20th century? Amy and Mike invited researcher Benjamin Backes to compare paper- and computer-based testing. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Why are so many tests being moved to digital platforms? In what meaningful ways are traditional paper- and computer-based tests different? Do students score equally well on both platforms? What testing challenges are exacerbated by computer-based testing? How does computer-based testing impact English-language learners? MEET OUR GUEST Benjamin Backes is a senior researcher at the American Institute for Research, where he has been since finishing graduate school in 2012. His training was in economics and he conducts education policy research using large-scale student-level administrative data from states and school districts. His interest in this topic grew out of a research partnership with the department of elementary and secondary education in Massachusetts, where they were interested in the impacts of changing standards and assessments on measured student performance. Course selection heavily influences both a student’s high school experience and college prospects, yet definitive answers on how to make these choices are often lacking. Amy and Mike invited educational consultant Phil Black to analyze high school course selection and academic rigor.  What are five things you will learn in this episode? What factors are important when thinking about class selection?  Where does “class selection” rank in importance for college admissions? How do students (and their parents) decide how many AP or Honors classes to take? Why should class selection be based more on track record and motivation than goals? Is it better to maximize GPA or take on advanced classes? MEET OUR GUEST Phil Black is the creator of PrepWell Academy, an unconventional approach to preparing high school students (and their parents) for the rigors of the college admissions process. His unique program is delivered online and focuses on the early preparation of students (freshman and sophomore year) interested in attending highly-selective colleges (e.g. Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, etc.), military service academies (e.g. Naval Academy, West Point, etc.), and those seeking athletic or ROTC scholarships.  Over the years, Phil has built a record of unique accomplishments, including Division I college athlete, Navy SEAL Officer, Goldman Sachs Investment Banker, bootstrap entrepreneur, 2X Shark Tank contestant, firefighter, husband and father of four sons. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Find Phil at prepwellacademy.com. LINKS Is your Child Well-Rounded or Angular? It's the countdown to 2021 and chances are you are looking forward to a new and probably better year. I'd encourage you to approach these next few weeks with great intention. This will require some reflection and planning on your part, but it will be well worth it. Today on the show I'll take you through a simple three-step process that I go through every year in December to help me have direction and balance for the upcoming year. Step One: Remember Remember the good and the bad. Remember when you were slaves but also remember how God delivered you with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm Step Two: Notice Look over your journal, your social media posts, and your photos. Look for themes. Notice the things that showed up over and over. Use that as information and guidance for what you should do next.  Step Three: Look Ahead Yes you can look ahead, even in all this uncertainty. Life has always been uncertain and God knows what lies ahead. You can trust Him to direct you. No matter what you do, make your relationship with God your greatest and first priority. Grab a copy of my newest Bible study where you will learn how to discern the voice of God--the very thing you need if you ever hope to achieve real balance.  Option one: Buy it on Amazon and study it alone (this is what I like to do!) Balance is all about expectations. And who among us has not been at least a little blindsided by what we expected in 2020 and what has actually transpired in 2020? Today I'm sharing a few things that have thrown me off balance this year and two ways I'm addressing them. And I also have a really big announcement, so be sure to stick with me to the end. If you are dealing with unmet expectations, try one of the following: 1. If your expectations are with a person, be sure to state your expectations and the consequences of unmet expectations clearly. People can't read your mind. Also, love and patience go a long way with people. 2. If your expectations are with a circumstance, adjust your expectation and ask God to help you learn to be content.    LINKS Is the Voice in My Head God or Just Me is NOW AVAILABLE!
