In this episode, Lisa and Phil discuss:Understanding the unique options available to students of military academies. The diverse majors and career paths that are offered through the service academies.Career paths, both military and civilian, for military academy graduates.Early preparation for success at military service academies. Key Takeaways: If your student is smart, athletic, and/or interested in leadership, keeping their mind open to military service academies or the ROTC can give them more options.Military officers are essentially the managerial layer of the military as an organization. About 15% of personnel fall into this category. While military service academies may seem like the right financial fit, there are more requirements to get in, and there is a five-year commitment upon graduation. The Naval Academy and Air Force Academy are very tech and STEM-focused. The Merchant Marine and Coast Guard academies are more certification-focused. However, these are not the only majors available. Military service academies are not an automatic road to front-line heavy combat.Your student should understand the opportunity costs for attending the academies. They should understand and ask themselves: if you don't get the community that you want, are you going to be okay with it? “There are almost infinite options to be ‘away from combat' if that's what they want to do. If you're a SEAL or you're a Marine or an Army infantry officer, you're electing to do that, you're not being forced to do that.” – Phil BlackAbout Phil Black: Over the past 30 years, Phil Black has built a record of unique accomplishments including: Div I college athlete, Navy SEAL Officer, Goldman Sachs Investment Banker, bootstrap entrepreneur, 2X Shark Tank contestant, firefighter, husband, and father of four sons. Join us for an inspiring conversation with Sean Glass as he shares invaluable lessons on leadership that can be applied in any high-pressure environment. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insights from a true leader who has navigated the challenges of both the battlefield and the boardroom. In This Episode You Will Hear: • [Growing up] we had Emus at one time for some reason. (7:46) • I read that book, and something inside me was alive, like “This is what I wanna do” Everything I did after that was asking myself that question:  Is this next move gonna help me get into the Navy? and if it's not, then I didn't do it. (17:25) • [Marcus] I feel like our saving grace is the fact that we did it for God and country. If you're a wild child and you wanna have the most fun of your entire life, go into the SEAL teams. (19:36) • Given a boat crew, If you don't perform - if you screw up, your boat crew get beats for you. Sorry – remediated – gets remediated for you. (24:51) • The less you think about yourself, especially when you're miserable, the better off you are. (25:18) • [Marcus] If you want to teach your son or yourself to be a great barterer or negotiator, go over there [Afghanistan]. (41:24) • Gift giving is a big thing to them [Afghans]. (41:54) • Getting to be on the other side of the BUDS equation was a great experience, because you get to see all the workings that go into it - all the things you don't see and appreciate as a student obviously because you're just trying to survive. (44:21) • I don't have a good poker face. (45:33) • No one puts a premium on training like the SEAL teams do. It's everything for us. (54:26) • I closed out my career at the training command which was just the best place you could possibly be. (55:21) • Our goal there [Echelon Front] is to arm their leaders with the tools they need to be better leaders. (65:42) • Jocko started Primal Beef, and our goal was to bring the same farm-raised all natural, Black Angus American beef that we had the opportunity to eat every night to as many Americans as we possibly could. (70:03) • Our whole goal was basically to make things the best experience you could possibly have ordering beef from somebody. (74:49) • Well above 80% of all beef produced in America comes from 4 different massive companies, and at least one of them is a foreign owned company. (77:55) • The average age of a farmer right now is 63 years old, because families just aren't taking over the family business. He earned two Bronze Star medals with the Combat "V", and fought in every major conflict since 1984. In this episode, Randy speaks in detail about a mission he participated in an attempt to take down Panama's dictator and drug lord, Manuel Noriega. The successful underwater strategies of the SEALS was beyond risky, and the specifics of how it was executed is compelling, to say the least. These days, Randy's relentless pursuit is to teach mental toughness to those who are willing to do what it takes. He has counseled SEAL platoon commanders and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a skilled teacher, leader, tactical advisor, and President of Old 18 Information Services. Randy's Book co-written with Brian “lucky” Riley: Unwavered: The Self-Belief of a Navy SEAL and TOPGUN Pilot In this episode you will hear: • I liked it. Jumping out of a Hilo - all that stuff - I'm kinda like “Okay, this it kinda it.” (9:08) • I tell people that BUD/S was the most adult experience of my life. (12:39) • It just a miserable program being in fleet. (12:47) • I hated every second of the fleet part of the Navy. (13:00) • [Manuel] Noriega was the king of drugs and all the other things bad. If you can remove God from society, he did everything that would happen once you do that. (22:34) • President Bush, Sr. made him [Noriega] a target for – let's just say “extraction.” (22:51) • This was a completely soft-oriented mission- to go down and get Noriega. Everybody went down there to get one guy. To get him out of the country and turn that country over to the next democratic leader. He was just pumping drugs into the US. (23:50) • I loved the whole BUD/S experience. (59:04) • There is no comparison, in my opinion, for any other training on the planet. (59:47) • Once you make it through Hell Week, I don't want to say you're a Team guy, but you have really done something. 80% of the other people are already gone. (61:0) • I am full, 100% against body armor. Period. Dot. (75:35) • I don't think you take a special warfare SEAL, and put him in body armor to do anything. I'd rather move fast and quick with a group of guys. (75:41) • We took all the basic stuff we were teaching and put it in that book, Unwavered. If you have unwavering self-belief, then you can accomplish anything. (90:30) • You're talking about an all-consuming mindset. That's the only thing you're thinking about. And if you allow all external influences (cancers) to weigh you down, you're never gonna make it. (91:25) • Your ability to survive is based on your ability to fight on their terms, to be sneaky, to know their tactics. It was super challenging. (98:34)

How to be a little bit less, just a little bit less, worried or stressed? Try the physiologic sigh. Interoception is the bedrock of elite performance, according to Brian and his team at Arena Strive/Arena Labs. This week's Team Never Quit Podcast guests, Mike Sarreille and Rey Baviera bring a gut-wrenching, firsthand account of their collective 35 years of military service as Navy SEALs - most notably witnessing the valor and heroism of fellow SEAL Michael Monsoor, who willingly jumped on a grenade to save those around him. While the story is brutal, it is equally heart-warming to know the source of “Mikey”s character and moral fabric. During his 20-year military career, Mike Sarreille served as a Recon Marine, Scout-Sniper, and a U.S. Navy SEAL Officer. Much of his career was in the Special Operations community, including the elite Joint Special Operations Command. He now works with small businesses and Fortune 500 companies on the principles of leadership, teamwork, entrepreneurship, and living a life of balance and purpose. Rey Baviera served almost 15 years in the SEAL Teams, with multiple deployments and operations in violent urban environments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also worked as an intelligence and targeting officer at the Special Operations Command Pacific. He co-founded VTH Consulting, with the intent of bridging the gap between medical providers and veterans, helping veterans fight for the VA disability claims they morally, ethically, and legally deserve. May the memory of Michael Monsoor never die. Read the book honoring “Mikey” - Defend Us in Battle, wherever books are sold. In this episode you will hear: • Not all Marines are equal, just like not all SEALS are equal. Performance comes into play. • Rey: I had no direction, and I joined the military because I had made a promise to my brother. • Mike: I'm standing in for Rose Ray who wrote the book Defend Us in Battle alongside George Monsoor, Mikey's father. • My second time in Ramadi, I fired my weapon for the first time. • You don't really know what you're walking into until guys start getting wounded,. • Shark base [one of the places we slept] was once of Saddam's vacation palaces. We had tents in there. • We had to take bottled water showers. • Mikey spoke thru actions, not words. • It's highly competitive in the SEAL teams in a good way. • With each mission, we learned more lessons. • When you step into combat, there's a inter service rivalry. But eventually you get past the butt-sniffing phase. But when we mesh together, it's amazing what we can do as a team. • The longer you sit in a position, you lose relative superiority and the momentum shifts, because you're static. • It's different than training when you know it's a live grenade in front of you. • Mikey did not hesitate. He went right down on it. What came next was brutal. • While the SEAL teams may have trained Mike, his character and moral fabric of who he was was given to him by his family. His family is like nothing you've ever seen before.

Rich Diviney is the author of The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance.   During his twenty years as a Navy SEAL Officer, Rich was intimately involved in the world-renowned SEAL selection process, which whittles exceptional candidates down to a small cadre of the most elite optimal performers. But Diviney was often surprised by which recruits washed out and which succeeded. Someone could have all the right skills and still fail, while recruits he might have initially dismissed would prove to be top performers. The seemingly objective criteria weren't telling him what he most needed to know:   Who could be part of the world's most elite military unit?   Through years of observation, Diviney learned to identify a successful recruit's core Attributes, the innate traits for how a person performs as an individual and as part of a team. That same methodology can be used by anyone in their personal or professional lives.   In his book, Rich shares the key Attributes for success-- including cunning, adaptability, even narcissism--and defines them in fresh and surprising ways. Rich shows how they can be applied to a team as readily as a person. Rich shows how understanding your own attributes and those of the people around you can fast-track optimal performance in all areas of your life.
