Wie günstig du Strom beziehst, hängt heute nicht mehr nur vom Anbieter ab, sondern immer öfter davon, wann du ihn verbrauchst. In dieser Folge spreche ich mit Paul Schieber, Product Manager im Flex-Team von Octopus Energy, über dynamische Stromtarife und alles, was dazugehört. Ich bin selbst seit einiger Zeit Kunde bei Octopus und habe erst kürzlich mein eigenes Smart Meter installieren lassen, deshalb steckt in diesem Gespräch auch einige eigene Erfahrung. Zuerst klären wir die Basis: Ohne Smart Meter kein dynamischer Tarif, und genau da hakt es in Deutschland gewaltig. Der Rollout liegt bundesweit erst bei 5,5 Prozent, während Länder wie Italien oder die Niederlande längst bei nahezu 100 Prozent stehen. Paul erklärt, warum mehr als 700 Netzbetreiber hierzulande das größte Nadelöhr sind und wie Octopus mit einem vereinfachten Modell namens Smart Meter Light versucht, den Prozess zu beschleunigen. Danach geht es praktisch: Wie lädt mein E-Auto eigentlich automatisch dann, wenn Strom gerade günstig ist? Paul nimmt mich mit durch die App-Logik von Octopus, erklärt, wie Ladezeiten und Netzlast zusammenhängen, und warum gerade Haushalte mit steuerbaren Großverbrauchern wie E-Auto, Wärmepumpe oder Batteriespeicher am meisten profitieren. Wer dagegen wenig Flexibilität im Alltag hat, für den lohnt sich ein dynamischer Tarif deutlich weniger, das räumt Paul offen ein. Ein Thema, das mich persönlich überrascht hat: kleine Batteriespeicher für die Steckdose, die ganz ohne Elektriker auskommen und speziell für Mietwohnungen gedacht sind. Wir sprechen auch über die Abschottung der Ladeschnittstellen durch Volkswagen und BMW und wie Octopus frühzeitig auf direkte Anbindungen gesetzt hat, um Kundinnen und Kunden vor Unterbrechungen zu schützen. Und wir schauen auf bidirektionales Laden: Was Batterietests wirklich über die Alterung von E-Auto-Akkus zeigen. Zum Schluss wagen wir einen Blick fünf Jahre nach vorn: Wo steht Deutschland dann im Vergleich zu Skandinavien, wo dynamische Tarife längst Standard sind? Und was bedeutet es, dass laut Paul noch immer ein Drittel aller Haushalte in der teuren Grundversorgung feststeckt? Around the world, factories making food, drink, pharmaceuticals and other everyday products rely on steam, often produced by fossil-fuel boilers. James Macnaghten, founder and CEO of Caldera, is betting that thermal batteries can provide a cheaper and more flexible alternative that stores electricity as heat, and delivers steam on demand. This week on Cleaning Up, Bryony Worthington visits Caldera's factory to see how it makes its heat batteries: combining recycled aluminium and iron ore pellets to create a long-lasting, efficient heat store. The technology is designed for industrial processes up to 200°C, which James sees as a major opportunity for electrification. They discuss how thermal storage can help factories manage peaks in demand, use electricity when it is cheap or abundant, and reduce pressure on congested grids. Across huge swathes of the global economy, clean solutions are already cheaper than their fossil alternatives, and so a carbon price isn't needed. But in other sections of the economy, the costs of green tech are higher, and so carbon pricing will be needed to make them cost competitive. But what should that price be, and how can it be successfully implemented? This week on Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich is joined by Professor Ross Garnaut, a towering figure in the debate about how to implement carbon pricing, and founder of the Superpower Institute. Having advised successive Australian governments on climate policy since 2007, Ross makes the case for how Australia can export green iron, ammonia, and carbon-based fuels to industrialised economies that don't have the land or renewable resources to decarbonise on their own. They discuss the political history behind Australia's stop-start carbon pricing, the debate over whether green hydrogen can ever get cheap enough to make the superpower vision work, and how First Nations communities are shaping decisions about the land at the centre of it. They also explore the tension between protectionism and genuine security concerns over Chinese supply chains, and whether China's undervalued currency is really what's holding back Australia's competitiveness. Octopus Energy paid its UK customers collectively over £100,000 during a recent heat wave, not through new infrastructure, but a text message and a price signal offering demand flexibility. That caught our attention.In this episode, Ed and Sara (David sits this one out) talk with Eric Davids, Head of Strategy for Octopus Energy's US business, about redefining utility-customer relationships, how approaches in the UK stack up against North American utilities' much blunter "please conserve" grid alerts, and what happens when consumers get real price exposure and it doesn't go well.

At the beginning of 2022, Europe was sourcing around 40% of its gas from Russia. By the end of this year, no more gas should be flowing from Russia into Europe.  Much of that shortfall has been replaced by production from the vast oil and gas fields of Norway's North Sea continental shelf. Victoria is undertaking one of Australia's most ambitious electricity transitions. The state is aiming for 65% renewable electricity by 2030 and 95% by 2035, replacing ageing coal-fired power stations with renewable electricity, batteries and offshore wind while keeping the lights on and consumers' bills down. This week on Cleaning Up's Deep Dive Australia, Michael Liebreich is joined by Lily D'Ambrosio, Victoria's Minister for Climate Action, Energy and the State Electricity Commission, who has overseen the state's energy transition for more than a decade.
