Send us your feedback In this episode, Technology Partner Kate Cruickshank sits down with Buddhika Rajapakse, Associate Director at Concept Consulting, to explore the untapped potential of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology in New Zealand and discuss the key findings from the recently released multi-client report Powerful Potential: New Zealand's Vehicle-to-Grid Opportunity.[01:14] Kate and Buddhika consider the fundamentals of bi-directional electric vehicle (EV) charging and why EV batteries represent a unique and flexible energy storage opportunity. They explain that, beyond powering a car, an EV battery can also be used in certain circumstances to supply electricity to appliances, homes, businesses, and even feed energy back into the grid. The conversation breaks down the different bidirectional applications (vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-home/premises (V2H/V2P), and vehicle-to-grid (V2G)) and how each works in practice.[06:45] Buddhika discusses the critical technology stack required for V2G to succeed, including V2G-capable EVs, chargers, smart retail offerings, and interoperable software, emphasising the importance of each layer working in synchronicity.[10:02] They then turn to the report itself, outlining the drivers behind its development, the sector-wide collaboration that shaped it, and the modelling used to quantify the value V2G could unlock across the transmission and distribution electricity value chain, the wholesale market and generation and also for individual consumers.[13:11] Kate and Buddhika consider the consumer experience as a critical factor for the success of V2G uptake, highlighting the need for simple, compelling consumer information and offerings. Global shipping contributes about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the total emissions of Japan or Germany. The sector, including its contribution to climate change, is governed by the International Maritime Organisation or the IMO, which is a UN agency based in London in the United Kingdom.Last week, the International Maritime Organisation gathered to vote on a proposal to reduce emissions from ships that had been agreed to in principle earlier this year. The election of Donald Trump to a second term as President marked a turning point in the politics of climate action – not just in the US, but around the world.The airwaves are suddenly awash with commentators, claiming that the transition has failed, that it was always a fool's errand, and that we must resign ourselves to a fossil-based future forever.The narratives of failure all revel in pointing out that we have not seen dramatic cuts in fossil fuel use globally, consistent with keeping the temperature increase to 1.5C, and are not on track to achieve global net zero by 2050.The climate and clean energy community is facing a choice. Octopus Energy Group Ltd. plans to spin off Kraken Technologies Ltd., a software platform that helps utilities manage the transition to cleaner energy. Kraken has been key to Octopus Energy’s growth and is already being licensed to other energy providers, with committed annual revenue increasing to $500 million in three years. Kraken has been key to Octopus Energy’s growth into the UK’s largest electricity supplier, leapfrogging industry incumbents to serve more than 7 million customers in the country. The software allows it to balance out power flows to households as energy-transition technologies like electric vehicles, home batteries, solar panels and heat pumps become more widespread. In February, veteran fossil industry advisor Dan Yergin and two co-authors published a piece called The Troubled Transition. In it they dismiss the idea that there is or can ever be an energy transition, anchored on the fact that fossil fuels contributed 85% to so-called primary energy in 1990 and still contribute 80% today. Needless to say, their argument has been widely amplified by the oil and gas industry. They conclude with a demand for a new approach – which they call a “pragmatic path”. Pragmatism is needed, but not the pragmatism of defeat. Not the ‘pragmatism' of believing fossil fuels hold the key to further human progress. Not the ‘pragmatism' of addressing climate change only if it suits the interests of fossil-fuel companies.
