This week I had an amazing chat with US astrologer Stephanie Gailing all about why life is so chaotic right now. Here's the thing: we're standing at the threshold of a brand-new cosmic era. We're in the midst of a wave of major planetary shifts, with several slow-moving outer planets changing signs over the coming year. (Saturn and Neptune are heading into Aries, Uranus begins to flicker into Gemini, and Pluto continues its powerful transition into Aquarius — all of which signals a dynamic shift in the collective.)So what we're stepping into now is not just a new chapter - it's a new volume in the story of humanity. No wonder it's chaos, right?!In this latest podcast, Stephanie and I explore what it all means for you, and how you can align with these powerful currents of change.PS At the time of our chat, I was having serious Wifi issues here in France - she helped me solve them! The school board and PTA have selected several student artists to create murals on the walls of Capeside High School, and Joey -- who recently remembered art was something she used to be into -- is one of them! Her concept involves a Chinese hanzi even though she's not Chinese herself, as far as we know; nevertheless, it is still sad when her work ends up getting vandalized. Pacey takes a break from tormenting his new roommate, Deputy Doug, to go on the case of who ruined Joey's work and ends up...well, exactly where you'd probably expect after a new rich jerk was just introduced in the last episode. Principal Green is thrilled to tell Andie that her PSAT scores put her in the top 50,000 students and on track for a National Merit Scholarship. This shakes something loose in her; quitting the disciplinary committee is just the beginning. You'll only be punishing yourself if you skip our episode on "Crime & Punishment"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

In this episode, Lisa and Brian discuss:Strategies for maximizing college scholarships given by the institutionsThe difference in merit vs. need-based financial aidThe role of GPA and standardized testing, ACT and SAT, in scholarship awardsColleges with merit scholarship grids where students can know the amount they can earn for good grades and scoresTransparency of college financial aid policiesKey Takeaways: Merit aid is often more predictable than need-based aid because many colleges offer fixed scholarships based on GPA and ACT and SAT scores, making it easier to estimate college costs.Skipping standardized tests can cost students thousands in scholarships, as many schools that are “test-optional” for admission still require test scores for merit aid or reduce the award if applying test optional. At some universities, it is possible to calculate the number of additional correct answers on the ACT a student needs to raise their merit aid award, making test prep a highly valuable investment.Over 90% of scholarship money comes directly from colleges rather than private sources, meaning that researching a school's financial aid policies is more effective than chasing small external scholarships.“When the airplane is going down, you put the mask on yourself first—you first, your kids second. The merit aid from the school is the 'putting your mask on yourself'… after that, if a kid has free time, definitely apply to some of the outside scholarships.” – Brian EufingerAbout Brian Eufinger: Brian Eufinger is the President of Atlanta-based Edison Prep and has tutored over 14,000 students for a combined 35,000+ hours on the SAT, PSAT, and ACT over the past two decades. A founding board member of the National Test Prep Association, he is frequently invited by school districts across the Southeast to lead out-of-state ACT boot camps. Brian is passionate about tracking test-optional admissions data and sharing strategies for reducing college costs through merit aid and scholarships. He regularly speaks on test prep, college admissions, and scholarships at PTSA meetings, webinars, and education podcasts.Episode References:Merit Aid Grids: https://meritaidgrids.com/Student Email Template: How to Get Clear Answers About College Merit Aid https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/merit #042 Will grade inflation hurt your teen with Brian Eufinger?  https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/042Get Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). flourishcoachingco.com/video Connect with Brian Eufinger:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edisonpreptutoring/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/edisonprepWebsite: https://www.edisonprep.com/Email: brian@edisonprep.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eufinger/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EdisonPrepTutoringConnect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

Dawson has arrived at the film noir section of his film class, and why not -- he's living in one, what with femme fatale Eve mysteriously popping up and disappearing all the time, making him feel like a mark! He's just snapped off The Lady From Shanghai when he notices shady doings across the way at Grams's place, and wouldn't you know it: the person creeping around with a flashlight is none other than Eve, who immediately tries to deflect questions about what she was doing by hitting on Dawson. When that doesn't work, she threatens blackmail with the stolen PSAT. Dawson is so fired up that he does some actual PI work! Is the information he uncovers worth the trouble he gets in with Doug? Henry is still so smitten with Jen that Jack tries causing a date to break out spontaneously without Henry's having to ask Jen (since he is physically unable to speak to her). And when Joey finds out that her latest rejection sent Rob after Andie, she takes extreme measures to protect her friend. Fire up the fan, but not too loud: we brought you an episode on "Indian Summer"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

We are NOT here for football, and yet it keeps happening to us! Offscreen Gale gives Dawson an opportunity to produce a human interest piece for a national news broadcast, completely on his own. He decides to do something about Jack, the gay football star, and gets signoff from everyone except Jack's coach, Mitch. Jen is also implicated in football culture when the other cheerleaders make a kiss from her a prize in a silent auction, and is so appalled that she resigns as head cheerleader (although events leading up to this do suggest that she was ready to do that regardless and the auction just provided a convenient pretext). Now sprung from his relationship with Andie, Pacey involves Joey in his latest shenanigans; getting caught cutting class for a trip to the post office lands them an unorthodox and moderately punishment from Principal Green that -- get this -- ALSO braids into the football storyline. Andie is trying to put her PSAT cheating in the rearview, but when Principal Green tells her he needs to see her about a disciplinary matter, it revs up her paranoia. Sinister title, no? It's scary to think about that. But I know it will help. Did you know they've studied people on their deathbed and asked, “What's your biggest regret?” The most common answer, “I let fear control my decisions and didn't take risks.” In this podcast episode I speak about the hidden risks in business. Usually, it's the action NOT taken. And, the time wasted. I don't want that for you. And I know YOU don't want that for you. Hard truth: We lose money every time a decision passes us by. The term is called “opportunity cost.” I hope you enjoy it. This concept changed my life. PS: At the time of this email, I have 3 guest passes left for Austin's Live Event. The entire junior class is in a tizzy about the imminent PSAT, the practice for the test that could possibly determine the entire course of their lives. But maybe they don't ALL have to stress about it so much: somehow, Eve comes into possession of a copy, which -- in her established role as a chaos agent -- she gives to Dawson. Then, he lets all his closest friends know he has it so that they can tell him what to do about it; unfortunately, that's when they all have to go outside for a fire drill, leaving their stuff, and when they come back in...the test is gone. Suspicions start flying around as to who the culprit could be, and the complete lack of evidence, apart from past behavior possibly informing actions in the present, doesn't stop Dawson making some pretty uncharitable AND unfounded accusations. Meanwhile, football is apparently still happening whether we like it or not. Jack suspects his teammates are being extra-hard on him for homophobic reasons; Henry tries to help him so that Jack might return the favor by getting him a proper introduction to his dream girl, Jen. She won enough money to pay for tuition and fees. She had the most scholarships when she walked across the stage at graduation. The announcer was still reading them after she had crossed the stage. Even then, she didn't have enough money for school. She worked and worked and continued to apply for scholarships. She graduated from an out-of-state university (University of Oklahoma) with no credit card debt and only $1,000 in student loans. Hey, a girl needs plane tickets. Let's talk about a reality that many parents and teens face: handling disappointing standardized test scores. It's a topic that stirs up all kinds of feelings—stress, doubt, frustration—and how we as parents respond makes all the difference. I share how common phrases, despite being well-intentioned, can unintentionally add pressure or shut down meaningful conversations. You'll walk away with a better understanding of what to say to your teen when they're disappointed and how to be that steady, supportive presence they need most. Whether it's the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or any high-stakes test, your words matter and can make a world of difference in guiding them through it. Episode Highlights:[0:00] Introduction and why test scores stir deep emotions for both kids and parents.[3:15] Understanding the language of support: what to avoid and why.[6:00] “But you're smarter than this”—how this phrase backfires and what to say instead.[10:20] Shifting from dismissive comments like “It's just anxiety” to more validating responses.[13:45] The problem with labeling mistakes as “stupid” and how to reframe them as learning opportunities.[16:30] Why “I don't care as long as you did your best” can feel like hidden pressure.[19:00] Building trust and resilience by being a non-judgmental, safe base for your teen. If this episode has helped you, remember to rate, follow, and share the Self-Driven Child Podcast. Ready to learn the history, philosophy, and practice of an experienced professional in the test prep industry? MEET OUR GUEST Meet Kate Fisher, who grew up in Englewood, NJ, and graduated cum laude from Horace Mann School, where she remains an active part of the community and is a member of the Alumni Council. Private tutoring is not Kate's side hustle; rather, she deliberately chose to pursue it as a full-time career because she loves teaching and values cultivating genuine and impactful relationships with her students and their families beyond the boundaries so often required by traditional academic and classroom environments. Kate is an energetic and patient tutor (and cheerleader!) who is able to quickly and effectively accommodate her students' needs. Her tutoring is creative and adaptive, providing her students with the support and skills they need to achieve their goals. Kate has worked with thousands of students during her career as a full-time tutor, which she began as an undergraduate in 2008. As a part-time teacher at Kaplan Test Prep, she taught ACT, SAT, and SHSAT in both in-person and online classrooms. By 2010, Kate expanded her tutoring repertoire to include both the ISEE and SSAT, as well as various AP exams, SAT Subject Tests, and high school and college admissions consulting. She spent 2013 as a full-time instructor, teaching classes and tutoring students throughout the tristate area. In addition to training part-time tutors and developing teaching materials, Kate taught and tutored low-income students through her involvement in partnerships with the NYC Department of Education. In 2014, Kate was promoted to manager of content and curriculum, spearheading product and course revisions for the 2015 PSAT and 2016 SAT test changes. After returning to tutoring full-time, Kate joined an elite, boutique firm in 2016 and quickly became one of their most requested tutors. From 2020 to 2022, Kate joined the company full-time and was not only the top-grossing tutor but also served as Director of School Partnerships and trained other tutors to work with neurodiverse students. Kate also singlehandedly wrote the company's e-book on Executive Function during this period.  Kate is well positioned to help students with a wide variety of learning differences. In addition to her extensive experience as a tutor, she is a lifelong activist for the Autism community, and has been volunteering with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder since her childhood. Kate holds a Professional Certificate in Learning Differences (LD) and Neurodiversity with a Specialization in Executive Function through the Landmark College Institute for Research & Training. In early 2023, Kate recruited an elite team of like minded tutors and founded Kate Fisher Tutoring (KFT) because she believes that one-on-one tutoring can transform students' lives and their relationships with learning. KFT focuses on effectively connecting families to top private educators who help their children efficiently meet—and exceed—their goals. KFT prides itself on organic growth generated through word-of-mouth referrals based on the success of the work Kate and her team do whether EF coaching, test prep, or academic support and enrichment. We all know that getting into and paying for college represent two very different challenges. But what if you could focus on factors that improve your odds of accomplishing both at the same time? For a surprising number of schools, you can! Amy and Mike invited educator Brian Eufinger to explain the role of test scores in college merit aid. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What's the difference between need-based aid and merit aid? Can people with incomes too high for need-based aid still qualify?  What are merit aid grids? How have they evolved over the last 20 years? How much merit aid can students earn based on ACT, SAT, or PSAT scores? Does every college offer merit aid based on test scores? How can students maximize the chances of merit aid?  MEET OUR GUEST Brian Eufinger graduated with honors from Washington University in St. Louis in May 2004. While an undergrad, he enjoyed working as a teaching assistant for Political Science 101, a resident advisor (RA) and as a volunteer paramedic with WashU's Emergency Support Team. Brian is frequently invited to speak about test prep, college admissions, and scholarships at PTSA meetings at Atlanta-area high schools as well as Edison Prep's free parent meetings. Brian serves on the Board of Directors of the National Test Prep Association. He is an active member of Washington University's Young Alumni chapter in Atlanta, as well as the WashU Alumni Admissions Interviewer Program. Under the direction of Scott L. Martin, the group will perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association's In-Service Conference in Athens on January 31, 2024, and at the Georgia American Choral Directors Association Fall Conference in October at Kennesaw State University. Fewer than a dozen groups statewide are chosen for the GMEA evening concerts. The group includes 35 members, and both events will feature music educators from across Georgia. Dean Rusk Middle School's Chorus will also perform at the ACDA event. STORY 5:   Fulton judge tosses three counts in Trump's election interference case A Fulton County Superior Court judge has dismissed three counts in District Attorney Fani Willis' election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The dismissed counts involved accusations of filing false documents in federal court, which Judge Scott McAfee ruled the state does not have jurisdiction to prosecute. The remaining charges, related to a scheme to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, remain intact. This ruling leaves five of the original 13 counts against Trump. The case has been on hold since June due to concerns about Willis' impartiality, which were addressed after the special prosecutor she hired resigned in April. Commercial: INGLES 8 (SALTS)   STORY 6:  Cherokee County Students Named National Merit Semifinalists Four Cherokee County School District high school seniors—Maja Brooker, Kevin Duncan, and Alfred Tang from River Ridge High School, and Robert Raymer from Sequoyah High School—have been named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. This honor, given to less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, is based on exceptional PSAT scores. These students will be recognized at the Cherokee County School Board meeting on October 17. To advance, they must complete an application detailing their achievements and pass additional requirements. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will select 15,000 finalists to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth around $30 million. STORY 7:  West, De la Cruz tossed from Georgia presidential ballot Two Fulton County judges have disqualified independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz from Georgia's presidential ballot due to improperly filed nominating petitions. Despite the disqualification, their names will still appear on the November 5 ballot because of timing issues. This decision reduces the list of qualified candidates in Georgia to four: Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, Libertarian Chase Oliver, and Green Party's Jill Stein. The Democratic Party of Georgia had appealed the earlier decision by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, concerned that West and De la Cruz could affect votes for Harris. We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller 4 (GENERIC)   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. Every October, the PSAT is administered in high schools. Even though the test has no bearing on admissions, college-bound students should still take–and prepare–for it. Amy and Mike invited educator Brian Stewart to explore how to prepare for the digital PSAT. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How has the PSAT changed over the past couple of years? What are some resources students can use for PSAT preparation?   Besides "test prep," how can students improve their PSAT readiness? What are some of the most common mistakes high-achieving students make on the PSAT?    Why is familiarity with the format so important on the PSAT? MEET OUR GUEST At the end of his first year teaching Social Studies at Dublin Jerome High School, company founder Brian Stewart thought it would make sense to do some part-time tutoring work over the summer. After all, he had done quite well on standardized tests when he was in high school and really enjoyed coming up with creative ways to explain challenging concepts to students. Other companies charged a fortune and didn't seem to have a high-quality product. As Brian worked with more students, word spread about the quality of his tutoring services. He started to offer ACT and SAT test prep group classes, and worked with students from all over Central Ohio. In 2011, Brian left his day job to run BWS Education Consulting full time with his wife Caitlin. Applying the expertise from her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, Caitlin has ensured that our teaching materials and methods make high-quality test preparation accessible to students of all backgrounds and ability levels. In 2012, Barron's Educational Series contacted Brian about submitting samples of his writing as they conducted a national search for their next ACT book author. Brian was chosen to write Barron's ACT, and has gone on to write several ACT, SAT, and PSAT books with Barron's Educational Series. His books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide. In 2014, BWS Education expanded to have associate tutors who teach not only the ACT and SAT, but tutor students in math, science, and writing. Brian and Caitlin personally interview and train every tutor on our staff to ensure they are the best in the business. BWS is a team of committed educators who relentlessly look for the best way to deliver educational enrichment to our clients, whether it's test prep, academic help, or college admission counseling. Brian appeared on the podcast in episode #33 to discuss PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship, in episode #383 to discuss Should You Prepare for the PSAT, and in episode # 507 to discuss The New Digital PSAT. These students were recognized for scoring in the top 10% nationwide on the PSAT. Each scholar received an embroidered “Key Scholar” letter-jacket patch, pen, and keychain. Additionally, students who scored at the 95th percentile or higher received a special cord for graduation. The program costs were sponsored by Cobb EMC and LGE Community Credit Union. The names of the scholars and group photos by school are available on the CCSD website. STORY 2: Georgia Senators Debate State Pullout From Accrediting American Library Association Conservative state senators in Georgia are advocating for the state's withdrawal from the American Library Association (ALA), a nonprofit organization. The debate arises from disagreements over the ALA's position on diversity in library materials. This matter was discussed in the Senate Government Oversight Committee, with some senators expressing concerns about the ALA's stances. Interestingly, State Librarian Julie Walker pointed out that Georgia's Public Library Service is not currently affiliated with the ALA, suggesting that disconnection might be feasible. However, the proposed bill, referred to as Senate Bill 390, aims to prevent state and local entities from spending funds on the ALA. The bill also proposes to relax requirements for public library directors. Critics of the bill, including the dean of Valdosta State University's library studies program, warn that this could lead to accreditation issues and financial repercussions. In addition to SB 390, another bill known as SB 394 is under consideration. This bill seeks to regulate the materials available in school libraries, sparking debates over potential censorship and the role of educators. STORY 3: New Georgia Senate Committee Investigating Fani Willis Vows Nonpartisan Approach The Special Committee on Investigations in the Georgia Senate, under the leadership of Sen. Bill Cowsert, has assembled to scrutinize allegations surrounding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her management of a case involving former President Donald Trump. Cowsert stressed the committee's dedication to unbiased and comprehensive examination of the allegations, which include claims of inappropriate relationships influencing the case. Willis, however, has firmly denied any misconduct. The procedural rules of the committee ensure bipartisan representation, providing Democrats with the opportunity to partake in depositions and questioning. Cowsert underscored the gravity of the investigation, aiming to circumvent political bias and media exaggeration. To facilitate this, the committee intends to promptly employ staff and initiate its work, prioritizing fact-finding, and transparency. Break: DRAKE   STORY 4: Woodstock Accepting Vendor Applications for 2024 Farm Fresh Market Vendor applications for the 16th season of Woodstock's Farm Fresh Market are now open and will continue to be accepted throughout February12. The market, which will run from mid-April to December, mandates that vendors grow at least 85% of their products. This rule ensures that the produce sold at the market is fresh and locally sourced. Applications will be evaluated in March not based on order of submission, but on the quality of the goods and their fit for the market. The goal of the market is to support local growers, emphasize the significance of locally sourced products, and create opportunities for education about agriculture and food preparation. Potential vendors can submit their applications either online or in person. Over 50 applicants are anticipated to be approved for participation in this year's market. STORY 5: Cherokee District Attorney Susan Treadaway Appointed to Georgia Board of Public Safety Cherokee County District Attorney Susan Treadaway has been appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp to the Georgia Board of Public Safety, with the swearing-in ceremony held at the Capitol. The board oversees law enforcement and transportation safety, including agencies like the Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. It ensures adherence to high standards of law enforcement, oversees training, and implements initiatives for public safety. Treadaway expressed gratitude for the appointment, highlighting the opportunity to contribute to overseeing state agencies and working with fellow board members and state leaders. In this episode, Lisa discusses:How your student can demonstrate to colleges the reasons behind their choice of college major.Actions your student can take in high school to have confidence in their future major decision and share their story with colleges. Options outside your high school to take the right classes. Thinking more broadly about how your teen can gain valuable extracurricular experiences. Key Takeaways: Students spend most of their time in the classroom - they should take the right classes that align with their future major of interest and fit their academic level. Don't let the options at your student's high school limit your student's narrative. There are ways for your student to create their own extracurricular activities if options at their school are limited. Many high schools offer internships in your community - your teen can also talk to local businesses regarding potential internship opportunities outside of their high school.  “No matter when you're listening to this, it is not too late to dig in and start doing the work now. Once you've done the work, it's time to demonstrate it when you get to senior year, and you're ready to apply to college.” – Lisa Marker RobbinsEpisode References:College and Career Clarity Episodes: #57 - College Admission by Major with Andy Borst#69 - The Ins and Outs of AP Courses with Megan Rose#93 -  The Homeschoolers Guide to Standardized Testing: AP, PSAT, ACT, SAT, and CLT with Leia LeMaster Horton#5 - Advice for Students Considering Healthcare Careers with Luisa Rabe#28 - What extracurriculars should your teen pursue? with Lisa Marker Robbins#84 - How to Write the “Why this Major” College Essay with Lisa Marker RobbinsBYU Online High School - https://hs.byu.edu/ Drews Mitchell - https://www.linkedin.com/in/drews-mitchell-72b86551/ Get Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). https://flourishcoachingco.com/videoConnect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

In this episode, Lisa and Leia discuss:Ways your homeschooler can communicate their test scores with potential colleges and universities. Why dual enrollment courses may be the right option for your student. The importance of taking the PSAT, SAT, and/or ACT, and when your student should start preparing for those exams. What your student should know about the CLT test. Key Takeaways: Your student does not need to take the AP course to take the AP exam - as long as they know the material and get a 4 or 5 on the exam, your student can showcase that on their transcript. Your student should avoid having over 30 credit hours going into college as they will no longer be seen as a freshman. Most of the highest financial aid and many scholarships are only available to first-year freshman students. Even if the school your student is considering is test-optional, taking standardized tests often opens doors for scholarships for which they may not otherwise be eligible. No matter the type of college your student is attending, you will want to consider testing. “Keep in mind the question really isn't when to start test prep. The question is when should your student reach their highest score ever on both of those exams PSAT and SAT/ACT - and that is October of their junior year.” – Leia LeMaster HortonAbout Leia LeMaster Horton: Leia LeMaster Horton, M.Ed. founded Horton Test Prep and helps students earn full tuition scholarships by raising their test scores. Students become prepared and confident test takers ready to conquer the ACT, CLT, and SAT exams. What makes studying a skill? 2. What does a lack of effective study skills look like? 3. What study skills are essential for students preparing for important exams? 4. Tests and the Rest: College Admissions Industry Podcast

Most years, the PSAT feels inconsequential for all but the highest-scoring students. The October 2023 exam, however, will put everyone–students, schools, and College Board itself–to the test as the first U.S. administration of a very new version of an old exam. Amy and Mike invited educator and author Brian Stewart to share essential information about the new digital PSAT. What are five things you will learn in this episode? How is the PSAT changing in Fall 2023? Will the scoring on the digital PSAT be different from past tests? What do we know about how the National Merit selection process will be affected by the Digital PSAT? How should students prepare for the digital PSAT? Can paper resources effectively prepare students for a digital exam?
