Act on Your Instincts for a Life of No Regrets with Peter Lorimer - Episode 189

What is life if we don’t reach? That’s Peter Lorimer’s guiding principle as he shares his profound wisdom with Ian Lobas. It’s a privilege to hear the advice of one of the most dialed-in, successful men you’ll ever encounter. You’ll be hanging on his every word. Peter has had an illustrious career as a top real estate broker in Los Angeles for more than 15 years now, and he’s just merged his company with real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran! Actually, his can-do attitude led him to achieve amazing results from as early as age 13. Refusing to be limited by the realities of his cold, industrial hometown in North England, Peter embarked on a musical journey as the youngest student at the Royal College of Music. He went on to tour with orchestras and left home at the tender age of 15 with a trombone under one arm and a backpack under the other, determined to be a success in London. Following his instincts paid off incredibly well because he became a record producer who has worked with superstars like David Bowie, George Michael, Seal, and Christina Aguilera. By the time he turned his talents to the world of real estate, Peter had amassed around 50 #1 hits on the Billboard and Music week club charts. What’s the secret to Peter’s success? He always checks in with himself to assess how he can grow and build who he is in order to build his business, his marriage, and everything that’s central to his life. That way, he’s always being the best possible authentic version of himself. This surefire approach ensures he’s the best he can be for everyone in his life and gets the best results from his business. In this episode, he shows how you can evolve and become the person you need to be to hit your goals with ease. When you’re done listening, be sure to check out our other amazing shows on the subject of setting out on a path of growth, including Finding Your Lifelong Passion and Limitless Possibilities. 109: The Online Course Junkie Epidemic

In episode 109, I talk about something that really riles me up – the rise of the online course junkie epidemic. As I share in this episode, I DO NOT think that online courses are the Holy Grail – especially for coaches, consultants, learning and development professionals, and thought leaders. I understand that you are likely wondering if you need (or your company needs) to adjust your business model to bring more bucks in right now – and for the foreseeable future as the economy unquestionably continues to take some hits. Instead, I want you to instead think about prioritizing what is near the top of your value ladder – and that’s rarely online courses. And, in this episode, I show you exactly how to do reorient your energy and business planning on what matters most. We jam on: Why my first online course launch left me broke and ugly crying on the floor of my closet – and how it gave me the kick in the pants I needed to shift from “online course junkie” to “high-ticket coaching proselytizer” How most coaches/consultants get it wrong when they think their audiences want them to create online courses How to create high-ticket coaching offerings that give you more net revenue and time freedom The Triangle of Impact™ - I walk you through an exercise that will allow you to marry your zone of genius with the right audience and structures for delivery   In This Episode: How a Facebook post made me mad [ 2:00 ] Why my first online course left me broke and ugly crying [ 7:00 ] How I have more free time when I focus on coaching [ 11:45 ] About The Triangle of Impact™  [ 13:45 ] What are the different ways to package our zone of genius? [ 17:20 ] Does having an online course make sense? [ 25:20 ]   Moxielicious Quotes: “When I get angry, it’s almost always a moxie issue.” “I will not NOT be rich.” – Laura Dern in Big Little Lies “When you are a coach, people want you to… coach them.” “If you are showing people how to develop a new skill – one that requires shifting mindset, developing new behavior, and creating new habits – it should not be delivered as an online course. If you are showing people how to develop a new skill and there are creative choices people need to make as they execute that skill (and they need personalized feedback to be successful), you should not do it as an online course. And if you are showing people how to develop a new skill – one that is likely to trigger resistance or outright self-sabotage then… you’re a smart cookie, you know where this is going. Then you should not do it as an online course.”   Links Mentioned: Want to learn more about Moxielicious: The Mastermind? In my first coach the coach podcast episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with design thinking expert, Amy Sekhon Cunliffe. Amy has a background in design thinking and consults with private and public sector organizations to create customer experiences that stick by leading groups, teams, and individuals through Design sprints. She also coaches entrepreneurs to build inspired businesses by combining their purpose, skills, and experience with design thinking. As you listen to this sample coach the coach session, discover how it’s possible, very quickly, to clarify the central idea to your work, your speaking, and your programs. And, as you listen to this coach the coach episode, you’ll discover how to clarify the core marketing message you want to spread. I also brainstorm with Amy ideas for how to pitch her services to senior-level organizational decision-makers. If you are a coach, consultant, or business leader, pay particular attention to how I coach the coach. How do I ask questions? Mirror back what Amy is saying? Sculpt the messages Amy is trying to get out? Allow Amy to see her own breakthroughs and clarify her immediate next steps? When we begin, Amy says that she can’t clearly articulate her message. Although she has a lot of passion and different ideas, she also feels lost. And, because Amy hasn’t created an online platform, she’s unsure about how to increase her visibility and get known. As Amy and I dive deep into our coach the coach session, you’ll see Amy discover the “big idea” for her speaking and thought leadership. We start to map out her content, and we discuss how to use a high-touch approach to growing her audience. Plus, we discuss using LinkedIn as a search engine and how to build visibility online – even when face-to-face opportunities are not possible.   In This Episode: About Amy Cunliffe [ 1:45 ] How Amy would like to receive coaching [ 6:30 ] What an audience should take away from Amy [ 8:35 ] We have always been programmed to have the right answer [ 14:00 ] About flow state [ 15:15 ] Utilizing a case study [ 21:30 ] A shift in the way we are doing business [ 25:00 ] Using LinkedIn as a search engine [ 30:10 ] Speed bumps that could get in Amy’s way [ 34:55 ]   Moxielicious Quotes: “When we see it, it becomes real for us.” “I want you to be a better problem-solver and love what you do along the way.” “Fall in love with the problem, not with the solution.” “I’ve solved this first problem, now I’m ready to solve the bigger problem.” “Start with where you are.”   Links Mentioned: Want to learn more about Amy Cunliffe? Emily is gearing up to go into maintenance mode for a while with her weight-loss and starting to reprioritize in her life. When we record this, we are currently in the midst of the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. We strive to be as accurate as possible on our podcast, but we are not experts. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: John is getting ready to start a new podcast and finds himself with Impostor Syndrome. Adele’s Instagram photo she posted recently for her 32nd birthday showed a dramatic weight-loss and we talk a bit about the reactions. John-spiration — “Just because someone else is praised for losing weight doesn’t mean you should be ashamed for not.” John gets motivated by an Inner Drill Sergeant sometimes. What do you think? Are you more motivated by negativity or positivity? Emily has a lot of Marketing (Conspiracy) Theories if you ever get her started on why something or someone is trending. John’s new organizational system is going well! Emily is re-evaluating her own scheduling system and routine, but she still likes to get everything out of her head on paper and work off of that every day. She has also realized losing weight for her is not a priority. She still enjoys Intermittent Fasting and Yoga, but feels like focusing on other areas in life and putting weight-loss into maintenance mode. This isn’t her breaking up with the podcast, BTW! Maintenance Mode is HARD! Emily looks at pictures of Target aisles because she misses it! LOL! Facebook is just like a scrolling tabloid all the time! Emily closes Facebook as soon as she gets angry. She hasn’t been on very often anymore. You’re never going to change someone’s opinion on the Internet. And the best part is, because we can’t go out, it’s not like we even need to see them! We’re in yet another week of Quarantine but we’re grateful we’ve been on this health journey together. At the time of this recording, Emily was finishing up a Spirit Week Challenge where she dressed up for theme days every day for a week. And John has decided he’s going to hunker down once he started reading about how those in the obese/morbidly obese camp are more susceptible. Everyone, stay safe out there! We’re so grateful you choose to spend your time with us and we hope we continue to entertain you right now. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email hatetoweight@gmail.com. In This Episode: We are Quarantine Crazy. Emily has enacted a Spirit Week Challenge because she is bored of her current wardrobe. Every day had a theme — Monday: Favorite book or movie character; Tuesday: Retro Day — pick a decade; Wednesday: Disney; Thursday: Sports Jersey; and Friday (the day we recorded): All Dressed Up with No Where to Go. Both Emily and John were dressed up and recording Live in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! Emily is also doing Spirit Week during Shark Week. Emily makes sure to broadcast to everyone, including her uterus, she is not pregnant! John gets to experience a NSV — his suit is now loose! He wouldn’t have known otherwise. Now that Emily has lost weight, she finds that she only wore certain outfits and dresses once before losing too much weight and swimming in them. John’s trying to work the carbs back out of his system. And it’s very hard right now to get fresh produce right now in stores. We’re also freaked out by the viral videos of people doing gross things in super markets. And the salad bar has always been iffy, ugh! InstaCart is so unpredictable, so one shipment came after two weeks, another came in two days. Emily and her husband also tried Shipt and that worked well, too. John is starting to worry about hunkering down, especially for people who are obese/morbidly obese. But he’s getting in an Intermittent Fasting groove again, doing 16-8. Emily has a problem when it comes to new food in the house where she wants to eat all the new snacks and especially comfort food. Emily even has a little moment discussing all the foods she would have as a last meal. Emily was able to get creative while she was waiting for her grocery order and was able to go through her stockpile of food she would buy and forget about. Emily is missing her WaffleFuls! Hoping Brickbox in Stratford, CT, opens up again soon! We’re both missing our fast-food, but turns out, John knows a lot about preparing squirrel meat. Yay for the #WinningsWednesdays! You are all awesome! It’s not just you  — every day seems like it’s a week long to all of us. Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories!
