“Shame can't survive the light." If you have been on this podcast journey with me for awhile then you know that addiction and recovery are a recurring theme on the show--subjects very close to my heart as someone whose life has been spared by sobriety. With so much going on in the world and addiction on the rise, and so many people suffering in silence, I think it's important to talk about mental health, addiction and shine some light on the subject. After all, shame can't survive the light. So today on the show I am sharing the story of Amy Dresner--a true badass and an amazing example that you can get through anything with resilience and turn tragedy into triumph. Amy Dresner is a journalist, author, and former comedian as well as a recovering addict and alcoholic. She has been a columnist for the addiction/recovery magazine theFix.com since 2012 and has freelanced for Addiction.com, Psychology Today, Vice and many other publications. Her first book, “My Fair Junkie: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Staying Clean,” was published by Hachette in 2017 to rave reviews from critics and readers alike. Elle magazine compared Dresner’s darkly comic memoir to Carrie Fisher’s “Postcards from the Edge” and Mary Karr’s “Lit,” calling Dresner’s book “one for the ages.” Dresner has appeared on the television show The Doctors TV and on numerous radio shows and podcasts, including Dr. Drew, Dopey and Rich Roll. She does regular speaking engagements around the U.S. and Canada. Her book is currently in development for a TV series. In this episode, Amy candidly shares her journey into and out of addiction and why it's never too late to change your life for the better. Growing up in Beverly Hills, Amy had it all:  a top-notch private school education, the most expensive summer camps, and even a weekly spending allowance.  But at age 24 she started dabbling in meth in San Francisco and soon became a full blown meth addict.  She managed to keep it all together until one night, high on Oxycontin, she pulled a butter knife on her husband and was promptly arrested for felony domestic violence with a deadly weapon. She found herself in the psych ward, divorced, and penniless.  She was court-ordered 240 ours of community service and for the next two years assigned to a Hollywood Boulevard "chain gang."  She cleaned up the streets and bounced from rehabs, struggled with sobriety, sex addiction, and starting over in her 40's. This conversation is raw, courageous and even shocking at times.  We talk about the dark side of addiction, fear, self hatred and shame.  The is a candid conversation about the struggles to success, the will to survive, and the conviction and strength required to achieve sobriety. Here’s what you will learn: How Amy started her journey from pain to purpose (2:50) What she learned and how she grew from her arrest and jail (11:31) How being on the "chain gang" shifted her perspective and changed her life (19:21) How shame affects us and how the 12 Steps helps us (23:51) Addiction doesn't discriminate and how to overcome the dark side by shining light on it (29:45) How to navigate feelings that come and go (36:52) How Amy was able to manage her depression and mood in the pandemic (45:43) How to manage making decisions about medications in sobriety  (52:18) Screenshot your favorite part and post to your IG story and tag me @amberlylagomotivation and @amydresner so we can see and repost to our stories!   Follow Amy: Facebook Instagram Twitter Website   Mentioned in this episode: My Fair Junkie: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Staying Clean The Fix: Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Recovery News | Resources The Molecule of More   Your Unstoppable Life Mastermind is coming June 26th! Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

What if YOUR science class could provide valuable data to NASA? What if they could research new areas--with no "textbook" answers?  And, what if students' ultimate discoveries could benefit astronauts aboard the International Space Station? That's exactly the opportunity which Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's Director of Education Amy Padolf has implemented, with Fairchild's innovative "Growing Beyond Earth" project. Operating in partnership with NASA, this classroom-based citizen science program engages students in a series of plant experiments.  Their goals: to find new crops which could grow effectively aboard the ISS during long-term missions into deep space. Students use equipment similar to the ISS's "Veggie" Vegetable Production System.    Keeping considerations such as nutrition, taste and the plant's overall adaptability in mind, they grow their crops throughout the school year.  Then, they have the opportunity to present their findings to NASA scientists and researchers, during the annual Student Research Symposium. Amy says that around 250 schools are currently participating in the "Growing Beyond Earth" project.  AND--Fairchild is accepting applications for the upcoming school year! Amy talked about her background, shared the story of the "Growing Beyond Earth" project and offered a look at some of the ways students have been learning and growing, as they explore! On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: How Amy's experiences, as a student, led to her passion for botany and education; The story of the "Growing Beyond Earth" project; A look at the participating schools and how the project works; How interested educators can get their schools involved for the coming academic year!; What's involved for a teacher, as far as a time commitment goes, when participating in the "Growing Beyond Earth" project; Some of the requirements, for successfully growing crops aboard the ISS; One major success, and one major learning opportunity, for the "Growing Beyond Earth" project during the past school year; Some of the impacts of the students' work; How the project awakened an interest in one teenage student; What the project means to makers (professionals, as well as students!); What's coming next!; How you can get involved and support the project (which doesn't have to be strictly financial support!);

Amy Reidel makes work that I can relate to. She brings the viewer into her world that is filled with color, sparkle, and rainbows but all the while, underlying insidious imagery creeps in to complete the picture. Amy’s painterly vocabulary allows for her sophisticated application of materials to slam up against visions of the figure in various states of psychological distress.  Through her work, she shows us the underbelly of care, and the mess of loving another human. Glitter coincides with a face that forces itself to manically grin but leaves us with a foreboding feeling that there is nothing to smile about...or is there?    As mothers or primary caregivers, we are told that our experience will be filled with saccharine moments but the emotional turmoil many will face is only whispered about. This dichotomy comes through clearly in Amy’s sculptural, “Mombies”. Mombies are defined as: “A mother who is consumed by raising her children to the point of being sleep-deprived or simply obsessed, and hence zombie-like.” In her ceramic pieces,  the mother or caregiver in question, attempts to become three-dimensional but continues to present themselves in two-dimensions with their painted on face gazing out towards the viewer, mouth agape.    Reidel’s work lays bare the complicated experience of loving another. To love is to straddle a line between sorrow and joy and she walks this line with precision, balancing the wide-eyed, struggle of her figures with colorful, dazzling, sparkly hope.   Amy Reidel is a St. Louis-based artist who has exhibited work nationally since getting her BFA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and her MFA at The University of Tennessee. She has been awarded residencies at ACRE (Artists' Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) based out of Chicago, the David and Julia White Artists’ colony in Cd. Colón, Costa Rica and at the Luminary Center for the Arts in St. Louis. Reidel’s artwork has been exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum-St. Louis, The Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries, Granite City Art and Design District (G-CADD), Lambert International Airport, Flood Plain Gallery, ACRE projects gallery in Chicago, Fluorescent Gallery in Knoxville, and the Amarillo Museum of Art among others. Her work has been showcased through media like Young Space, I Like Your Work podcast, Brenda Magazine (UK), St. Louis Public Radio, the PBS program Living St. Louis, the international publication Daily Serving and the Studio Break podcast. Reidel received a Critical Mass Creative Stimulus award in 2016 and the Regional Arts Commission Artist’s Support Grants in 2014, 2019 and a COVID-19 artist relief grant in 2020. Amy Reidel is an Assistant Professor of Art at Southwestern Illinois College.   “Through painting, drawing and sculpture, I abstractly combine imagery to illuminate the bittersweet conditions of motherhood, family and sexuality; topics most people experience but are not encouraged to discuss professionally. The innocuous, inherited patterns of Grandma’s scarves and decorative rugs merge together with darling babies and scared caregivers in an absurd representation of home and love.   My work results from a cacophonous use of materials, layering and erasure, which have become my primary language as a progressive mother in the conservative Heartland. Personal and political issues conflate in my work and result in aggressive but candy-colored marks reflecting the dualities of fear and joy, rejection and protection. The saturated spectrum is used as a defense mechanism to make magic of this earthly existence.”-Amy Reidel       TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:   - Dealing with LGBTQIA issues as an adolescent and teenager through artwork - Being an Ally  - Confronting the pressure to present yourself as a “professional” in the artworld - “The Artwork is Not Judging Me”  - Being the boss of your work - Taking a break from making work and how we, as the art world, have deemed certain reasons as “honorable” or allowable.  - “What are you making Work About if you Aren’t Living Life” - “Mombie” -Working with craft materials -Exploring other media to take the pressure off  -How Amy works through her pieces -Embracing autobiographical imagery     LINKS: www.amyreidel.com @amy.reidel Instagram https://www.brenda-mag.com/post/on-motherhood-amy-reidel Jered Sprecher http://www.jeredsprecher.com/ Marcia Goldenstein https://marciagoldenstein.com/home.html Jessica Dickinson https://www.jessicadickinson.com/ Rachel Dove http://www.racheldove.com/ Michael Giles https://fieldhat.com/home.html Jim Hodges https://www.gladstonegallery.com/artist/jim-hodges/works Polly Apfelbaum http://www.pollyapfelbaum.com/   I Like Your Work Links: I Like Your Work Podcast Studio Planner Instagram Submit Work Observations on Applying to Juried Shows

Amy Eddy is the Vice President and Executive Agent of BigSpeak, a company that works with top keynote speakers, business speakers, motivational speakers getting them on major stages as well as working with big events to land major keynotes. Amy advocates for her clients, empowers them to make the right investment, and is energized by the potential of the human spirit. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: Happiness is a muscle we can choose to make strong or not. The study on pessimists and optimists How Amy got into the speaking industry Finding the good out of the bad things happening in the world The power of habits How do you define success? Episode Highlights: Happiness is a Choice Happiness is a muscle you can choose to make stronger or not. This is even backed by science that you can choose to push them in whatever direction you choose. We can’t cure ourselves of all diseases just by thinking positively. But there's a lot we can do. We have way more power than we realize. But many people are hardwired to always look at what can go wrong. Letting Go of Pessimism Pessimism is a weight you can choose to let go of but it takes time. People have the tendency to think about what other people think of them but we can make practices to stop feeding that and to cancel out that noise. There are so many variables and thoughts flying around in your mind about all the possible outcomes of what you're saying and how it'll affect that person versus what you're wearing and how it will affect their thought of you. When you look at several hundred years back, terrible things have happened. Somehow, this gives you a sense of peace in knowing that this is not the end of the world. Things have always been hard for a lot of people but there's always something good that happens despite the bad things. The Power of Habits Our brain doesn't want to change and it wants to be in auto mode where you're not consciously thinking about the physical activity you're doing. We have to work hard and choose to get it to go in a different direction and get it off idle or autopilot. For instance, people always talk about losing weight. We have all the information and facts out there about weight loss but we're the fattest country in the world. And that's because change is hard. You have to go against your brain and what your body wants to naturally do. It takes brain capacity to rewire the system so you can't do a whole lot at once. You need to focus on one thing. Defining Success Be able to define what is success for you. What is success going to look like for you? We may not always be at our best at times, but what's important is you're able to go back to what's good for you. More sales, more networking, and more opportunities are good things. Those aren't inherently bad. But we can get sucked into it and that's not good long-term. And that is not how you should define success. And if you have one, does it make you emotional? I'm not saying you have to cry about it, but is there substance around it? If you want to make money, great. But why do you want to make money? Today we are excited to bring you a conversation with Amy Lacey, the bestselling author of Cali’flour Kitchen and the founder of Cali’flour Foods, a company that sells cauliflower-based foods and currently the fastest growing food company in e-commerce. When Amy began looking into resolving her autoimmune issues, she stumbled on a recipe for a cauliflower pizza base, which she perfected, started selling at farmers’ markets, and eventually built out into an 8-figure business. In this episode, she gets candid about the percentage of her business that is based on e-commerce versus retail, her thought process behind deciding to bring venture capitalists on board, and why it was more about choosing strategic partners than getting the financial backup. Since the earliest days, customer service and experience have been a top priority for her and the team, a value she believes sets them apart from many other food companies and opens doors to the most unexpected opportunities, including the chance to talk to people like Martina McBride and Whoopi Goldberg. And the secret to outstanding customer service, she says, lies in your ability to truly listen to the needs of people and then to deliver the perfect solutions. Amy also discusses how the COVID-19 crisis affected their sales, the importance of surrounding yourself with people who know the industry, the equity you should be prepared to give to key stakeholders, why you have to secure your trademark as early as possible, and more!     TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES: [00:41] Before we jump into today’s interview, please rate, review, and subscribe to the Leveling Up Podcast! And we only get one body to do it in. Listen in as Amy Ledin explains how to build your health and show up as your Best Self! Question Highlights How did getting a cancer diagnosis change your view of health? What did that whole experience teach you? Over time, you have embraced vulnerability to share the deep stuff that's shaped you. What advice would you give people who don't know how to lean into that? A lot of times, people equate HARD with BAD. How do you see hard conversations? What is your best suggestion for having hard conversations in a way that feels safe? I'm a big believer in creating routines that support the life I want, and I know you have developed a daily agreement process. Can you tell us about it? Why is it so important? At one point, you lost 90 pounds and then proceeded to teach bootcamps for the US Navy. What was the key to your weight loss? You and your husband, Erik, combined your fitness companies. How has working together helped you as a couple? Did you go through an adjustment period? In this episode, you will learn about… How shame impacts our physical health What Amy did to get past the place of judging herself—and others The connection between resentment and self-betrayal How Amy uses the seven-year-old self character to navigate difficult conversations Amy's insight on how keeping commitments to yourself builds confidence Why fitness often serves as a catalyst for bigger change How Amy leverages different Best Self characters in different circumstances What's behind the name of Amy's new podcast, F* It! Show Notes We are given one life here on this earth: One life to experience the best of this world. One life to make choices that support our dreams. One life to overcome the obstacles in our path.
