Big update for Hate to Weight-ers! John and I have decided to take a break from recording regularly. We apologize for the delay in getting episodes out to you and we are continuing to work on them. I talk about it more at the beginning of the episode. A heads up, this was recorded a few months before this was released and you may hear some older news stories we talk about. We apologize for the delay in getting these episodes to you and we thank you so much for your patience. In This Episode: Our AMAZING Artist-in-Residence in our Facebook Group Theresa Crout made the most incredible artwork for our Live for this week and we thank her so much! Check out her stuff on Her website | Facebook | Instagram. Emily’s Shark Week has come to visit again and she’s trying Chaste Berry + Dong Quai capsules to help with the hormones. She’s also using mindfulness to help with her stress and eating, including some eating games like the ones we played with Harriet Morris, the Eating Coach. We talk about our triggers for our own binge-eating, as well. Sometimes knowing the triggers for us helps us be a lot more mindful about how we react. Has anyone else tried Apple Cider Vinegar for dieting? What did you think? Let us know! John was in the hospital this week and he gives us the update. Thanks for all your well wishes! John has a new Dude Cooking Breakfast — Mexican Egg & Cheese Pizza! Hear the recipe on the show. And we ever get a little dating advice for you Romeos out there looking to woo a partner. Like music? We are back from a little bit of a break with this episode. For those anxiously awaiting new episodes, we are very behind in our release schedule, which you’ll hear more about in the coming weeks was because of some health setbacks on both Emily’s and John’s sides. Hello from just Emily today. John has had some health complications and was not able to record this week. Don’t worry, he is on the mend and we will hopefully have our wonderful host and editor back soon enough! In the meantime, I wanted to bring you this special interview I did in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group with Health Coach Carolyn Cohen from the podcast Wellness While Walking! She’ll be sharing tips for us on our own health and wellness journeys. Watch the LIVE Recording: https://www.facebook.com/emilypeckprokop/videos/10102857442245087 New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: Hear about Carolyn’s journey to becoming a health coach and why she pivoted her life toward helping others with their wellness journeys. She was so kind to share lots of ways we can all get more veggies into our diets, which is a goal I know many of you in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group put up as a goal for our Sunday Goal Posts. She also debunks the myth of getting 10,000 steps as a guideline for those of us who want to walk. If you haven’t checked out her podcast, Wellness While Walking, yet, definitely check it out! Another week of quarantine and tensions rising. John ended his last episode recording and the rest of his week was a whirlwind of anxiety, sickness and a death scare! But luckily, everyone is OK. Life isn’t easy for many of us, and while staying healthy is important, there’s a lot we’re all juggling. We want to take this opportunity to remind yourself to have grace for yourself and others. Like drive-through? So do we, but we can still make plenty of healthy choices. Watch the LIVE Recording: https://www.facebook.com/John.bukenas/videos/10223381456221596 New to Hate to Weight? He starts off the episode talking about how getting BBQ turns into a death scare! John’s audio drops are superb! Thank you to our listeners who get a kick out of them and voted on which sound drops have been your favorite! Who else is susceptible to the power of suggestion? John and Emily are. John has some anxiety over not feeling well. And this is after the earlier death scare! Isn’t it weird that you don’t wake up while your fever’s breaking? Only after you’re all sweaty. Anger and frustration can be such a confusing emotion, especially in how people release it. Don’t forget to apologize! We apologize for the delay in getting out episodes — we really appreciate your patience with our episode releases. John is doing his own yoga poses now and made his own yoga playpen. Only 10 minutes a day! Emily’s enjoying getting her vegetables from Mexican food and Taco Bell lately. We love our fast food here at Hate to Weight and over the years, we’ve found that’s not the worst drive-thru food we could get! The Power Bowl is really filling and not too bad! Emily loves Amy’s frozen burritos. Let us know if you’ve had them and which ones you enjoy! Pulled pork sliders with coleslaw, everyone! It’s delicious! We’re all in a state of Decision Fatigue pretty much all the time. Emily put out this theory and you’ll see a Rolling Stone article about it below in the links section. Watch the LIVE Recording: https://www.facebook.com/John.bukenas/videos/10223313740288740/ We are starting to focus on making good choices and John is even trying out yoga! We also got a bit carried away with our discussion and we run a little long in this episode. Also, STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT around 55 minutes in — we mark our podcast as explicit anyway, but we want you to know that the C-word is used quite a bit. While we're comfortable saying it, not everyone is comfortable hearing it. We want to be respectful to listeners by giving you an advanced warning if this offends you. When we record this, we are currently in the midst of the Covid-19/coronavirus pandemic. We strive to be as accurate as possible on our podcast, but we are not experts. Emily is doing Maintenance Mode and doing her thing in her plateau. She can see her progress but still getting comfortable with her “new” body. We’re transitioning the show to be less about looking at the scale, but more about trying to get healthy. John’s worried about getting “stuffocated” by brisket and corn bread. John’s going back to more compression on his legs and the whooshie pill again. What was the last vegetable you ate? Usually when Emily’s in a funk, she’ll ask herself that. Even though Emily finds she doesn’t have to count calories, she still realizes that eating healthy will make Future-Emily happy. John’s thinking of trying yoga! We have a nice big yoga discussion and Emily geeked out because this is her favorite form of movement. John likes to use this podcast as a form of therapy, Emily uses her journal for the same reason. Being able to hear or see your own words can help you get a lot of clarity into what you truly feel. John’s best form of dealing with the news is to find the humor in it, and then the internet arguments start. We have some great #WinningWednesday posts, and we’re putting some new prompts in the group! Gratitude is the Attitude! Emily became a certified life coach — and will soon be certified in mindfulness, as well! Dut-dut! We talk a bit about podcast editing and our workflows toward the end. If you ever wondered what podcast editors do, you might enjoy it! We talk about being people pleasers, both in our work and in our own heads with our self-esteem. STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT! If you are offended by the C*** word, around the 55:00-56:30 mark we say it quite a bit. Oh, we get so silly when we’re procrastinating the weigh-in, LOL. Later, Weighters! Watch the LIVE Recording: https://www.facebook.com/John.bukenas/videos/10223238426085932/ We got a question before the show we spend some time going through about using sweetener with Intermittent Fasting and we go into it a bit. We also talk about how COVID is affecting our lives — we’re in the Northeast so it’s pretty much all around us. And can you tell our ADHD went a little wild on this show? John has been finding a lot of his usual favorites are not available in grocery stores as much, oh no! We got a question in our chat (thanks Don!) before going live that we talk about a lot in this episode about using sweetener during Intermittent Fasting. While we are not experts, we explain some of where our information came from that we go by. Neither of us can do cheat days, so it’s interesting to learn how other people use them. Emily is using IF to feel good and no longer to lose weight. She’s in maintenance mode. Are you a rebel and a rule-breaker like John? (And Emily the rule-breaker comes out every so often.) John talks about his opinion about wearing a mask and gives us a very visual analogy about why using a mask is important, oh my! There is a lot of COVID-Talk in this episode. It’s still on the top of our minds. And a lot of our food choices have also been affected. What if we knew there was an asteroid coming to the earth, what would you go out and buy? Emily thought it would be food, but it turns out, when she really thought about it, it would be a pack of cigarettes (and possibly a cigarette holder?) John is finding his anxiety is driving his eating disorder a bit. And we are now noticing just how prone to germs and infection we really are. We are getting a lot of therapy by doing this podcast, especially when John edits and Emily writes the show notes. What do you think of the virus talk? Do we need to cut back? Let us know! Are you more motivated by negativity or positivity? Emily has a lot of Marketing (Conspiracy) Theories if you ever get her started on why something or someone is trending. John’s new organizational system is going well! Emily is re-evaluating her own scheduling system and routine, but she still likes to get everything out of her head on paper and work off of that every day. She has also realized losing weight for her is not a priority. She still enjoys Intermittent Fasting and Yoga, but feels like focusing on other areas in life and putting weight-loss into maintenance mode. This isn’t her breaking up with the podcast, BTW! Maintenance Mode is HARD! Emily looks at pictures of Target aisles because she misses it! LOL! Facebook is just like a scrolling tabloid all the time! Emily closes Facebook as soon as she gets angry. She hasn’t been on very often anymore. You’re never going to change someone’s opinion on the Internet. And the best part is, because we can’t go out, it’s not like we even need to see them! Great job everyone! Yay for the #WinningWednesday posts! Emily never took a lot of Before Shots, and definitely none without a lot of clothes on. Later, Weighters! For us, we both work at home so the dust is beginning to settle, but there are still a lot of changes we haven’t anticipated. John has started a new organizational program and Emily has been adding more veggies to her meals and trying to be more mindful about why she finds herself in the kitchen. We’re both staying in as much as possible.) Are you already sick of “New Normal” usage? For us, the dust is starting to settle for us. John has begun an organizational program by Carl Pullein (see links below!) John and Emily both have ADHD and are always learning how to navigate with it, which has been a part of our weight problems, as well. We apologize for the delay in episodes lately. We are fixing it as fast as we can and we thank you so much for your patience with us. There are so many things in our lives that we are trying to optimize to help us become more productive with our time. For some people, productivity can bog them down. But for us, we really appreciate routines and systems. John gives his breakfast frittata recipe! Check it out! Emily loves the idea of being proactive before being reactive. “Everybody has a routine and until your routine becomes a habit, you gotta keep working at it.” — This week’s John-spiration! Sometimes, we just want a Food Hug. “What kind of comfort am I looking for?” — Emily when she finds herself in the kitchen. John will hopefully give us more Geese Updates! Emily has decided this week to add more veggies to her diet this week and getting more mindful with her eating, as well. One routine that’s probably NOT good for us is our cereal-eating routine. We get into a discussion about masks. We’re pro-mask, by the way. Emily’s declarations: No tomatoes as a default and please stay 6 feet away! Woo-hoo for the #WinningWednesday posts! In This Episode: Emily’s coming up on her birthday and she’s indulging. Anyone else find themselves ordering more shelf-stable food than they normally do? Emily has a problem with Cheesy Puffs! Never get her started on the “Essence.” It’s also our two-year anniversary. One thing we’re not dealing with are the bakers at work anymore. It’s amazing the stuff we do for free food. But we make sure not to be the Office Scavenger in a stealth way. (Or so we think) Do you relate? Have you also had secret tricks to eating? Let us know! Email us at hatetoweight@gmail.com Emily’s Cheesy Puffs are John’s Tapioca Pudding. Now that we have the accountability of the podcast, luckily John and Emily don’t run too far amok. John’s actually finding it easier to get the food he needs and he may be getting into a groove. This has made the anxiety subside. Emily is recording an audiobook version of her book in her other Facebook group to get out of her comfort zone. We really appreciate you listening to our vulnerability. Something about this podcast is the truth serum we have needed as a form of therapy. John goes deep into what he thinks about doing affirmations in the mornings. Emily talks about her morning pages and how she follows the moon cycles! Have you ever looked into the cycles of the moon and how our bodies are attuned with it? We’re in yet another week of Quarantine but we’re grateful we’ve been on this health journey together. At the time of this recording, Emily was finishing up a Spirit Week Challenge where she dressed up for theme days every day for a week. And John has decided he’s going to hunker down once he started reading about how those in the obese/morbidly obese camp are more susceptible. Everyone, stay safe out there! We’re so grateful you choose to spend your time with us and we hope we continue to entertain you right now. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. Emily has enacted a Spirit Week Challenge because she is bored of her current wardrobe. Every day had a theme — Monday: Favorite book or movie character; Tuesday: Retro Day — pick a decade; Wednesday: Disney; Thursday: Sports Jersey; and Friday (the day we recorded): All Dressed Up with No Where to Go. Both Emily and John were dressed up and recording Live in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! Emily is also doing Spirit Week during Shark Week. Emily makes sure to broadcast to everyone, including her uterus, she is not pregnant! John gets to experience a NSV — his suit is now loose! He wouldn’t have known otherwise. Now that Emily has lost weight, she finds that she only wore certain outfits and dresses once before losing too much weight and swimming in them. John’s trying to work the carbs back out of his system. And it’s very hard right now to get fresh produce right now in stores. We’re also freaked out by the viral videos of people doing gross things in super markets. And the salad bar has always been iffy, ugh! InstaCart is so unpredictable, so one shipment came after two weeks, another came in two days. Emily and her husband also tried Shipt and that worked well, too. John is starting to worry about hunkering down, especially for people who are obese/morbidly obese. But he’s getting in an Intermittent Fasting groove again, doing 16-8. Emily has a problem when it comes to new food in the house where she wants to eat all the new snacks and especially comfort food. Emily even has a little moment discussing all the foods she would have as a last meal. Emily was able to get creative while she was waiting for her grocery order and was able to go through her stockpile of food she would buy and forget about. Emily is missing her WaffleFuls! Hoping Brickbox in Stratford, CT, opens up again soon! We’re both missing our fast-food, but turns out, John knows a lot about preparing squirrel meat. Yay for the #WinningsWednesdays! Sorry for the late-releasing episodes! We're still trying to adjust our schedules for our own client work, as well as this podcast. We're both adapting to our quarantines and it's a stressful time, for sure. John is a bit hungover on today's episode and has recently shaved his head. And Emily is dealing with a sick spouse (not COVID, thankfully) but it's still stressful on top of everything else. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is related to the COVID-19 crisis. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? John has shaved his head! Don’t forget to join the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook so you can see! John is also a bit hungover while recording. Emily has found herself wanting a cigarette. The stress from this whole thing is real, y’all! Thank goodness we can’t go out. Don’t smoke, kids. Ever. And don’t listen to 18-year-old Emily. She’s missing her college vices and has chosen swearing as her current vice to relieve stress. Please! Stay home! Keep your bubble intact and sing some Police if you need to — “Don’t stand so close to me!” John is ready to hunker down until there is a vaccine. He’s getting back into Intermittent Fasting and eventually keto. Emily’s planning a Spirit Week Challenge! Want to spruce up your daily wardrobe? Check it out! Have you ever eaten a typical food so much that you actually get sick of it and never eat it again? We’re coming up on our Two-Year Anniversary of this show. Be prepared — Emily goes into a segment about Easter Candy and the different varieties she loves. Warning: If you are starting Intermittent Fasting, drinking will be a bit different. Take your time because alcohol usually hits differently. Emily is actually missing crowds. Emily’s husband has a cold this week and is doing the work of two parents, plus trying to work, plus dealing with the world as it is. Suffice to say, it’s been a hard week and the journey to getting one clean knife was enough to throw her into a tizzy. In case anyone needs it, Mobile Smash Rooms are a thing! Even though there’s a lot of stress in Emily’s house, she was able to eat some food she doesn’t normally get because her husband is sick. Silver linings. Awesome Winning Wednesdays, everyone! This episode was recorded in the beginning of April 2020 for context. We're still getting used to the temporary new-normal of staying indoors and self-quarantining for our own safety. It requires us to learn more planning skills that, luckily, we have already been working on with our own diets. But not like this. In fact, Emily has taken to calling the combination of this + PMS "The Season of Our Discontent". Good thing we still have our sense of humor, although John has deemed himself an Anxetiy-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: John starts off the show with a clip of a toddler upset about how she can’t get all her favorite foods and the tantrum that ensues. And that’s pretty much how John’s reacting. We find our habits have changed from everything that’s going on with the coronavirus pandemic. Don’t take vitamins on an empty stomach! Nope! John now identifies as an Anxiety-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. Do you have triggers for your eating or other habits? That’s one thing we’ve really worked on identifying. We’re also learning how to plan our shopping and eating so we can make our groceries stretch. Emily is celebrating two years of doing Intermittent Fasting! Two years = 90 pounds down = 8 sizes down! It’s weird that this is starting to become a new normal for everyone. Gross-out alert: Both John and Emily admit we both enjoy pizza that’s been left out over refrigerated. Eek! Emily has some morbid curiosity. We apologize in advance. Thank goodness for the #WinningWednesdays posts! We can always use some good news. Thank you for all the memes and affirmations! Heads up: We normally don’t censor ourselves on the show, but we do talk about a very mature podcast a bit in the beginning. If you want to skip all that, we finish talking about it by the 18:00-minute mark. It’s a Pearl-Clutcher! We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. Even though John and Emily are both naturally homebodies, even they are getting a little restless when it comes to being told to Stay Home. And that leads to some stress eating, unfortunately. But we’re figuring things out as we go along, as per usual. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! We do today! What do you think? Do you like the humor and the memes about Quarantine and COVID-19? John finds himself very undisciplined right now and running amok, but at least he’s aware! Our food planning skills are being tested heavily! Especially when it comes to buying enough to eat and also store. We’re all going to forgive John for not stepping on the scale this week because the batteries were dead. Who’s the mean person in your life? Is it you? But John has decided to get some sunshine and fresh air. (Psst: I talked to him later that day and it was a good experience.) Have you heard about Dying for Sex? What do you think? We’re also looking for distractions — something that has nothing to do with current events. Everyone! Big news! Julie Andrews is OK! (There was nothing wrong with her, but Emily worries if she doesn’t get a Julie Andrews update every so often.) Emily is pulling back and taking a look at her business and how it fits into what’s going on. She also is turning off the phone during the day or putting Do Not Disturb on her phone. Heads up: This episode was recorded on March 19th, so keep that in mind if we’re behind on the current events when you listen to this. We were all this together when we were dieting, and now we’re all in this together when it comes to staying home and stopping the spread of COVID-19. This week, we’re starting to get used to our new life of quarantining ourselves and keeping ourselves separated from others. There’s a little bit of stress eating popping up in our lives, as well, but we try to keep the mood up in this episode! New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: We’re finding out just how much we rely on our normal way of getting food and now we’re adjusting. We’re finally cooking at home! And it sucks as much as we knew it would. John goes through his grocery routine now and how he sanitizes what comes into his house. Why is it so hard not to touch our faces?! As if we didn’t have trouble planning our meals before, we are trying to survive a crash course in it now! Emily has a bidet attachment and it’s amazing right now! It saves on toilet paper! Would you buy a Used Bidet? Um, no! Are you still enjoying the quarantine memes? We are! Emily has started streaming her work on Twitch (in fact, she’s streaming right now while writing notes!) Have you found you need more breaks from your phone lately? John refused to go to the doctor’s office and is really taking this seriously! Good for him! GRATITUDE IS THE ATTITUDE! Years ago, both of us would have eaten all the crap and been fine. But NO! We wanted to get healthy. Emily has been working on lowering her expectations of other people, as well as herself right now. Yay! Emily is back this week! And she’s working on getting back to her own self lately. A head’s up. This episode was recorded March 12, 2020. At the time of recording, we were just beginning social distancing and learning about the seriousness of COVID-19. Please bear with us while we try to find a balance between entertainment and sensitivity to the topic. While Emily was coming back from her trip, John has been hunkering down, preparing to do a lot more Dude Cooking at home instead of getting drive through. New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: John doesn’t like being away from Emily for two weeks. Sorry everyone for the sound on my end! It seems I used my computer mic, ugggh! — Emily. Let’s encourage John to do more solo episodes! John explains Discord to Emily. Are you on Discord? What do you think? Emily is having a bit of an identity crisis when it comes to social media, so she’s becoming more introspective and playing with her private Instagram. Would you allow a video of yourself dancing online? Emily loved it! Emily has also found that from her daily yoga, she now enjoys dancing! And pretending to know how to dance. I promise, y’all, I am an Introvert! I take a looong time to warm up to people. Podcasters are the best people! We did stupid stuff when we were 18, right?! Emily left her phone in an Uber. If this has never happened to you, check out how she got it back! Emily used the Hate to Weight Voicemail Line to get her phone back. John talks about an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with an infectious disease specialist. John’s anxiety is up and we both know for us anxiety is an overeating trigger. How are you when it comes to hearing symptoms? We have both realized we hate cooking. We should have named this podcast Hate to Cook. Seriously! Home Ec taught Emily how to follow a recipe, but she can’t come up with a recipe. Emily is looking forward to watching Salt Fat Acid Heat. Have you seen it? Was the movie Outbreak used in your high school class to talk about viruses and how they spread? That’s how Emily learned. Please do your research, everyone! What happens when you go on vacation while doing Intermittent Fasting? Well, Emily found out on her big family vacation! In fact, it’s a whirlwind of a story, which includes Emily’s actual ideal vacation of driving for hours in nature, calling on her “boot and rally” days from college to get her through taking too many vitamins on an empty stomach, and Couch Jeans from the Universe. Wow. Are these show notes or the back of a family comedy from the ‘80s VHS? Meanwhile, while Emily was away, John spent time with his girlfriend and then ran amok the rest of the time. But it wasn’t an all-at-once thing. It happened gradually. But now, since he’s had to be accountable on the show, he has decided to create a 5-step plan for himself and can hopefully find some local groups to help out. (Suggestions welcome!) Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 In This Episode: Emily is back from a family vacation and, boy, was it interesting! Disneyland, Universal, California and back and feeling like it was straight out of National Lampoon. (OK, no dead relatives on the car.) Best way to rid yourself of Mom Guilt? Being *those* parents on a plane with a screaming child. Emily and her husband were those parents. Eek! But Diet Guilt? Apparently, that’s a thing, as Emily finds out. But because of sickness going through everyone else, she decided to take Zicam outside of her eating window. Because being healthy on a family vacation is probably the best reason to break a fast. SPOILER ALERT: Turns out, it didn’t deter her weight loss at all! :) Are you a Disney food person? Emily loved the food there! “You’re a mom! Come on! College has trained us for this. Boot & Rally!” — When you tell yourself you don’t have the flu, you just took too many vitamins. Even writing these show notes, our sleep schedules are still wonky! Humans are so weird! Seriously! Another exception to Emily’s eating window. Good hibachi. But not California pizza. Sorry, California. Emily loves her shoes she wore to Disneyland. In case you’re curious, they’re Sketchers with Memory Foam. Would you wear “Couch Jeans”? Seriously. But the Couch Jeans from the Universe did provide a wonderful belt for the jeans Emily brought and found out were too big. Emily also had the win of getting down to her wedding weight! But her dress fit completely differently. Please do not send in your theories “You’re gonna wash that story right out of those jeans.” — John After John’s girlfriend left, he was on a muck and continued. More unhealthy choices fell into the cart, bigger portions were being made, and John knew he was in trouble. John heard a podcast from a YouTuber Bridget Phetasy John’s 5-Step Plan: Get back to Intermittent Fasting Get a good breakfast. Slowly start reducing any sugar and carbs. There has to be more exercise. Be more proactive and accountable. John also noticed that he’s been bullying himself when he got on the scale. But we know if we have one bad week, it’s just a week. It’s not our entire life. John also talks about an article (linked below) about Food Addiction and he’s looking for support in his area. “There’s so much shame in being a food addict, that people don’t go. We suffer in silence.” — John John was doing well, but then started gambling and “had outs” — if you know poker, you’ll love John’s analogy! Emily’s getting ready for a family vacation, on top of crazy work stuff, on top of the current events —it’s a recipe for the perfect storm in Emily’s world and there’s even a funny story about what happens when you throw a rock in the woods, craving mall pretzels, and prom dresses! OK, I’m building up this story a lot, but I promise this episode will be an interesting side of Emily in Panic Mode. We had a great discussion in our Facebook group thinking about the lifestyle changes we make to lose weight versus what we are planning on doing once we hit our goal weight and need to maintain. We both have planning on the brain this week and talk about Proactive Mode vs. Reactive Mode when it comes to our diets, businesses, and life. John has already had a morning! And he even has a realization halfway through the episode and remembers to breathe. He also wants to create a #Lifing Toolbox. Emily changes her schedule and has some adjusting to do. This may or may not be affecting her weight. We’ll see! We also talk a lot about the importance of planning, including how we plan. We talk a lot about planning in this episode and different methods, including writing things down and a deep look at Emily’s weekly and daily writing/planning routines. “Limited Time” gets us every time! Emily has realized that her toddler turns her brain to mush by the end of the day and has to adjust her whole schedule. Emily’s porn is counting down to when preschool begins, for sure. She’s going to bed earlier and waking up earlier, when she can have time to herself to plan before anyone wakes up and puts her in reactive mode. We both realize we need to find a release that’s not food. John needs a Lifing Toolbox! 33:06 Emily breaks down her morning pages and how she plans her day. (Thanks for the question, Craig!) Welcome to our new listeners and our new members in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook! We’ve seen a few new faces in the group and we’re always excited when you can join us for the live show. No matter where we are in our weight-loss journey, it seems we are constantly testing and adjusting. John is testing and adjusting his eating window when it comes to Intermittent Fasting. BUT! He realizes that he doesn’t have to shame himself anymore. Yay! John had a bad recipe experience and we are determined to find a way to enjoy cooking. Emily tried InstaCart for the first time and we got to avoid the Big Kid Toy Aisle of Aldi. John gives us some more Dude Cooking ideas and we want to know, what is the food you can’t make for yourself? Fun Tip: At the beginning of the year, go through your pantry and it’s easy to find the cans and containers that have expired. John JUST realized that Chia Pets come from Chia Seeds! “You DON’T throw out Ferrero Rocher, you just don’t.” It’s always interesting when we have to explain our diets to people. We both really love the science behind Intermittent Fasting and we talk a bit about it. We have more resources over at HatetoWeight.com. So many great #WinningWednesday Posts! We jump right into today’s show and even had to backtrack to record an intro! But don’t worry, John is a great editor and somehow kept our ADHD a little more understandable in the final edit. We’re back from our holiday break and we are feeling the effects, for sure. We couldn’t get on Facebook for the Live Show, bu we still recorded. We actually recorded on Thanksgiving, before the feast, which worked out well for the weigh-in. John has some big news for us —he has been cleared by his therapist for weight-loss surgery! Yay! He also gives us a quick Dude Cooking recipe for vegetable soup and we talk about getting more vegetables in, even though it’s been too cold (for Emily) for a salad lately. A big thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards. We didn’t win, but we are thrilled to have been nominated! John has been learning to sit with his feelings, at the urging of his therapist who he has been seeing to get ready for bariatric surgery. And we’re finding out that sitting with our feelings and trying not to go into the fight-or-flight response is much harder than just trying to fight them. But it’s necessary for true weight-loss and to keep from sabotaging ourselves. Emily is dealing with Shark Week (what we call the week of her period) on top of weeks of sickness in the house and her weight-loss has been temporarily put on hold. But we have faith that we can make it through and we know it won’t always be like this, even though when we’re in the throes of it all, it can seem overwhelming and never-ending. Do you love or hate “The Office”? John hates it! John’s learning to sit with his feelings, and this is an important step in our weight-loss journey. Mindfulness sounds “easy,” but when it comes to validating your own feelings and realizing the stories we tell ourselves, it’s incredibly difficult to learn. Both John and Emily have ADHD and there is a side of ADHD that comes with anxiety and possibly spiraling. We are both without our usual vices, so we have to find a whole new way to cope with our feelings. It’s still new to us and we’re still getting used to it. Emily is so sick of the generation wars. Stop it! Sorry we didn’t quite stay on the topic of weight-loss this week. We know how to diet — but we are learning to deal with the emotions and that’s the hard part. Did you know John’s stage name? John Jamingo! How we’re getting out our thoughts: Emily keeps morning pages and has a release jars for scraps of paper of her worries, and John has started recording his thoughts into the microphone. Try it! All your friends are doing it! Johns a bit of a Grinch when it comes to Christmas. Did you know? Both John and Emily have dealt with some depression lately and we’re working through using food as our crutch and really examining why we choose food as a vice. Brickbox, just let us know when you’d like to come on as a sponsor ;) Emily has temporarily solved her clothing dilemma of being tired of shopping for clothes and having to throw them out when she loses more weight: she’s buying the same $6 shirts and $10 legging 2-packs from Walmart until her weight settles. Zuckerberg closet, here I come! John, if you’re reading these show notes, stop scratching your legs! As much as Emily loves her Wafflefulls, it’s important to note that it’s just a phase and this won’t consume her life or cause her to throw her diet completely away. “I’m not even sorry!” OUR BIG NEWS: Thank you to everyone who nominated Hate to Weight for the Discover Pods Awards! VOTE FOR HATE TO WEIGHT FOR THE 2019 DISCOVER PODS AWARDS HERE! This week is a little different from our other episodes. John couldn’t make it this week so I did a solo episode talking about how I got started with Intermittent Fasting and lost about 70 pounds in 18 months. We joke sometimes, but dieting really is such a lifestyle change, but it doesn’t always have to be a punishment for doing something wrong. I really encourage anyone currently on a weight-loss journey of their own to keep getting back on the wagon, keep trying new things, keep pushing toward your goals. John and I are so encouraged by all of you and your support and we hope we’ve also been able to be supportive to you. — Emily New to Hate to Weight? Both John and Emily are in pissy moods and can’t figure out why, until they both realize that the antibiotics they’ve been taking may have something to do with it. And any sort of dieting is never easy when your mood isn’t great. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Call in your WINS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 Meet Your Hosts: John Bukenas is a podcast editor from New Jersey. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. Emily Prokop is a podcast editor and consultant from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: We recorded on Halloween, which apparently starts the Eating Season in the U.S. Emily’s Halloween Costume this year was #SelfCare! Water Reminder! We apologize for the skipped episode last week — John woke up with a migraine from caffeine withdrawal. Caffeine is a hell of a drug! This podcast really keeps us accountable so we had quite the few weeks since the last time we recorded. John has quite the attitude (but we’ll find out why later in the episode). But the mood really affects weight loss. But we try our hardest to get happy! John finds out about the hashtag #OKBoomer and has a bit of a fit. Rant ahoy! Be prepared to be schooled and threatened with turning this car right around! Did you see the picture Emily posted in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group of the belt she bought when we started the podcast? It’s on its last hole! Have you heard of Macy’s Personal Shopper? No minimum to buy and absolutely free! Emily really wants to try this. Oh! And the first time, you get 20% off! Would you try it? John solves women’s fashion, LOL! You’re welcome! SAGGY KNEES! What is that?! Emily is on a roll and continuing her routine. As long as Emily knows she can have anything she wants, the timing doesn’t matter as much. We will never say it’s easy to start and we go into some of the side effects of Intermittent Fasting in the beginning. But the past two weeks really felt like hell to Emily, who’s upper respiratory infection turned into an ear infection. Turns out, the antibiotics caused a whole host of mental side effects, including anxiety, irritability, depression and just general “blah-ness.” Biotics have helped already, by the way! Thank you to everyone who reached out and suggested them and Emily is currently looking more into the gut-mind connection. UPDATE: Emily went to the ENT and ended up having an Inner Ear Infection and am now on more medication. Eek! John apologizes to his lady friend, Samantha, for his pissy mood. Emily shouts out the Fairfield, Connecticut, McDonald’s. Good job tasting really good! Congratulations to everyone’s #WinningWednesday posts! Do you watch TV shows with subtitles? Later, Weighters! She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: We’re back after taking last week off because Emily was at a podcasting conference and John had his special lady friend visit! We apparently had completely different weeks. Emily had a blast at She Podcasts Live! She stayed in her window but sometimes forgot to eat. A microphone is like truth serum for us, but it’s also a bit of our motivation to keep going. Oh, Emily missed both her flights. She basically lived through her worst fear twice! Thanks, Southwest, for accommodating a crazy crying lady! For those who watch the live video, one of Emily’s favorite things she got from the conference is a Moxie Award! Podcasters are awesome. Emotions are OK, people! John ran amok, including having a McRib and celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving. “Not now, Alexa! This doesn’t concern you!” Which is better, in your opinion? Pumpkin Pie or Sweet Potato Pie? John is getting back on the wagon and making a pact with Sam, including weighing in with each other! Emily’s goal pants are LOOSE! Congratulations to everyone on their Winning Wednesday posts! Don’t forget to call yours in or join the group and add yours! Emily is in ONE-derland!!!! Since episode 1, she has lost 61 pounds! Fingers crossed that John gets back on track for next week. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost more than 60 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: We were incredibly ADHD last week. Did you notice? John’s been having a hard time with lymphedema and needs to do a 30-day diabetes test. Emily’s only point of reference for diabetes is gestational diabetes tests. YUCK! Sometimes you have to be your own advocate. If you’re trying to do ALL THE THINGS, you’re going to burn yourself out. Have you heard of Chaffles? Keto-friendly waffles made with cheese and eggs (or other variations). We have John’s keto resources over at hatetoweight.com/resources. Taco Bell! How dare you get rid of our favorite foods! Don’t let yourself struggle! Ask for help. Did we talk about The Big E? If you’re in New England, you may have heard of this huge state fair with amazing food! All that food, and still the weight goes down. Thanks, Intermittent Fasting. John’s birthday is the day this comes out! If you’re reading these, please wish him a very happy birthday in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! Do you think sugar is more addictive than other substances? What are you done with? We are allowed to tell ourselves that we are done with something for the rest of our lives, and it can be very freeing. Emily got a haircut and finally gets a haircut she enjoys! The baggy look isn’t really working for Emily. But what a nice problem to have — losing weight and needing to buy new clothes. There’s still a moment where Emily has to remind herself she needs a smaller size. Congratulations to all our Wednesday Winners! Clearly, Emily doesn't remember when Memorial Day is (lol). Emily found she couldn’t deal with caffeine very easily. We’ll be skipping next week’s show because Emily will be in Atlanta for She Podcasts Live. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost more than 60 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: Last week was a HEAVY week, but the support we received was phenomenal! Thank you to everyone who reached out with support and encouragement. We really do read everything and it keeps us going! John took a trip to the Emergency Room for his foot. Luckily everything seems to be OK for now. But the annoyance of it meant he was able to avoid overeating! In case you’re new to the show, Intermittent Fasting means only eating during a certain number of hours every day. We’re reparenting ourselves and negotiating with ourselves, but it’s working! At-Home-Emily hates to cook; Out-Shopping-Emily forgets this and buys vegetables that just go bad. Can you relate? John has a great baked potato routine going! Emily found frozen cauliflower pizza. The good news: it tastes just like a regular frozen pizza! The bad news: it takes just like a regular frozen pizza. Have you tried cauliflower pizza? Your mindset when you lose weight is very weird and is tricky for both of us. Our bodies can do so much! But our brains take some time to catch up to the changes. "The Mind, Explained" (not “The Brain, Explained,” as Emily says) is fantastic! The Anxiety episode is a great one to start one. Are we just giving ourselves cheap exposure therapy by podcasting about our weight loss struggles? Winning Wednesday! Wait, nope! Nevermind. Not yet. What do you think? Should we have more guests? If you’re not in the mood for a downer, skip ahead to John (at about 18:55) Emily gets some heavy news about her family and it’s a big eating trigger. Is it so much to ask that people wait to give us bad news when we’re in our eating windows? Sorry dog people, Emily is not a fan of the yip-yips. Emily realizes she doesn’t have any of her old coping mechanisms she used to use — overeating, smoking, and drinking. Emily is reading a new book about learning to be mindful of emotions and how they affect you. Emotions can make us feel heavier than the scale lets on. John absolutely lightens the mood! And to think he wasn’t going to talk about this! John was so close to a new second number, but then … oh, I’m not going to spoil it here. OK, a little spoiler: John buys things in his sleep, LOL! We were featured on School of Podcasting for a segment called “Because of my podcast!” Hey kid! Put something under your knees when you’re kneeling! What stories are you telling yourself about your weight? Emily just got back from traveling to another conference and she recaps it. Big thank you to Katie Krimitsos for her Women’s Meditation Network! It was one of the few podcasts Emily could listen to. Have you ever gotten a concussion? Did you take some time to recover? John stuck with his shakes with his back injury, but found himself going back to sandwiches. 14:26 John gives us his Dude-Cooking recipe for Instant Pot Baked Potatoes! Have you tried CBD for pain? What do you think about it? John has a little addiction to sugar-free popsicles. We're dealing with A LOT this week, both in the world and in our own lives. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost more than 50 pounds. In This Episode: Trigger Warning: We talk about some current events in this week’s episode from the get-go. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those affected by the recent shootings in Texas and Ohio. The reason we talk about this on a show supposedly about weight loss is because it affected both of our stress levels, which affect our eating and dieting habits. John lost his car keys and was “stranded” in his house for three days! That’s one way to avoid the drive-thru! Our ADD/ADHD is also on overdrive lately. John had a good time out to eat with his daughter and had a little slip off the diet, but he is aware of it and is growing so much since last year! Do you have guilt over taking some time for exercise or self-care? Mom Guilt is real! This is your reminder to go do something just for YOU! Emily’s dealing with post-travel anxiety and depression. Oh! And also Shark Week! Did you know ADHD is girls and women is harder to spot? Females are more likely to internalize it. Don’t forget to be aware of your social energy! He also went to his second therapy session this week to help get him mentally prepared for Bariatric Surgery. He realizes all the drive he has used to learn podcasting can be used for his own eating habits. John also did an experiment to see which is faster: Making his own breakfast sandwich vs. going out and getting a drive-thru breakfast sandwich. Turns out, making his own sandwich is faster! Heads up! Emily will be away next week so NO new episode next week! Emily’s a fiddler and if you hear a bump, it’s her Rubik’s Cube she dropped. John’s starting to question his motifs when it comes to food prep. Be careful when you’ve made too many decisions! Emily is really interested lately in identifying Decision Fatigue. John has also started planning ahead! Yay! John’s goals for weight loss: Going to podcasting conferences and also to do stand-up comedy. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. John’s special lady friend has come to visit and he’s been having a great week! With her staying with him, they’ve been having fun eating together and cooking together! What do you do for your diet while on vacation/staycation? Our friend Lisa was going for surgery the day we recorded. Her surgery was a success and we are wishing Lisa a speedy recovery! Don’t have a notepad ready for John’s Frittata Recipe? Here it is! Saute the peppers, onions, and mushrooms until tender. Remove veggies and keep warm Combine 12 eggs plus about a ¼ cup of half-and-half and fry in oven-safe frying pan for a bit until the bottom develops a skin. Add veggies and some cheese Bake at 350 degrees F for about 15 minutes Add more cheese on top and bake for another 5 minutes John is gearing up for bariatric surgery by seeing a therapist and he was shocked that 95 percent of people with eating disorders fail after bariatric surgery because they haven’t gotten the overeating under control. His date has been pushed off again so he can get some help getting his emotional eating under control. “I’m starting to see the big picture. It’s almost like I’m backing up and I’m looking at this whole situation from over-top and afar and I’m seeing more than I’ve ever been able to see before.” — This week’s John-spiration! Emily decided to measure herself for the first time in a while — she’s lost 10 pounds since the last time she weighed herself. If you haven’t started measuring yourself yet, definitely try it, but not so often. Check back every few weeks and compare. Even if the scale doesn’t move much, you’ll be surprised at how your body changes when you’re dieting and exercising. Emily is also in a groove with Intermittent Fasting, but that’s because it works really well with her lifestyle. The fasting hours can be rigid for some, especially if you like your coffee with cream and/or sugar. But for Emily, since she didn’t have to think about eating anything for 16 hours, it works really well. And, in case anyone is curious, the Burger King tacos are not as good as Taco Bell tacos. John has done the hard work so you don’t have to! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Come celebrate your wins over in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Meet your hosts: Emily Prokop is a podcast editor from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost more than 50 pounds. John Bukenas is a podcast editor from New Jersey. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. This episode starts out with a nod to our friends over at The Feed from Libsyn as we greet everyone with a “Good Generic Time of the Day!” Have you ever heard of Decision Fatigue? Decision Fatigue is the exhaustion that sometimes comes mentally after making too many decisions. It’s said we make 35,000 decisions a day! It’s been proven the more we make these decisions, the more they exhaust us and, consequently, we end up making poorer decisions if we’re not aware of what’s going on. Decision Fatigue doesn’t just refer to picking out what clothes to wear in the morning (ever wonder why Zuckerberg always wears the same thing?), but it can REALLY impact those trying to diet. Have you heard of Decision Fatigue before? How does it affect you? One way to help deter Decision Fatigue is to plan ahead and also start to build predictable habits and routines. One challenge both John and Emily face is the rebellious part of our brain loves to try to convince us to break our habits, no matter how good those habits are for us. We love breaking rules. Even rules we’ve made for ourselves! Some things we’ve found helpful for Decision Fatigue: Mapping out our day Time blocking Being aware when we get distracted and off-task Prioritizing what deserves our mental energy Thinking about the overall goal when doing tasks. John admits in this episode that he was supposed to be taking his Whooshie Pill twice a day, but most days he only took it once. He’s getting used to taking it so often, but at least it’s helping the swelling in his legs! John’s also realizing the time he’s spending now working to fix the problems with his legs could have never existed had he started taking care of his health more prior to this. Now he’s realizing he’s spending six hours a day taking care of himself. We also want to send our love to one of our listeners Lisa who had heart complications last week. We really want to thank our friend Mark from Podcast Branding who created amazing shirts for our podcast with our own little inside jokes on them! Check them out! John actually gets Emily to do a spit-take later in the show! Find out how ... We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Emily has started noticing she’s doing more bored-eating and shortened her Intermittent Fasting window from eight hours to six hours. She also remembers what hungy-hungry feels like. Emily’s also reading The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist about our relationship with money and the scarcity mindset vs. abundance mindset, and it’s starting to remind her of her mindset around food. Oh, we went deep. We’re trying to figure out what makes us do the things we do. Can you relate to realizing you’re repeating what your parents thought or did?
