We started the show and John was in a full-fledged panic attack. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode and talk through, including “fit-splaining” and a quiz all about BBQ food! A heads up, this was recorded a few weeks before this was released and you may hear some older news stories we talk about. We apologize for the delay in getting these episodes to you and we thank you so much for your patience. Remember, we record these episodes LIVE on Thursdays in our Facebook book. In This Episode: John is in a full-fledged panic attack. John has to go to the doctor’s for the first time since before we all hunkered down into quarantine. In This Episode: John has finally lost his mind and fled New York. Will he come back, ever? It’s not looking good. I have this feeling this will be the first of many more remote Pods. Please, no one think that John HATES New York. He doesn’t HATE it. He just LOVES mountains more. So, respectively, I think you could call that hate but IT’S NOT HATE. Anyway, he has to come back because there are lots of very exciting things coming in the fall and we have much exciting Pod content to bring to the world. OH. MAN. OHHHHHHHHHHHH MAAAAAN. I think it’s no secret that here on POD HELP THE OUTCASTS things can quickly turn into a bromance fest. This week, it happens way earlier in the episode than usual. Enter Matthew Campione and Inspiration Roofing. John’s younger brother Matt, the ‘fit and funny one’, owns a company in Dallas, Texas called Inspiration Roofing. They’ve been hit during the pandemic but luckily, for the most part, they have been able to stay pretty stable due to the nature of what they do. Social distance and roofing happen to compliment on another. He says they have seen a slow down, naturally, because of economy slowing, which is understandable. SPOILER ALERT: REALLY GOOD INSURANCE ADVICE. WE  SHOULD BE CHARGING A SUBSCRIPTION FOR THIS ADVICE. What we love about Matt and his team is that they work with insurance on your behalf. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to go back and forth with condo board and insurance and it’s SUCH A PAIN IN MY BLACK ASS. The irony here is that Matt and his Project Manager, Kevin, look weirdly exactly like John and I. Whoa. Weird. Go to website and look. My mind just exploded a bit. Another week of quarantine and tensions rising. John ended his last episode recording and the rest of his week was a whirlwind of anxiety, sickness and a death scare! But luckily, everyone is OK. Life isn’t easy for many of us, and while staying healthy is important, there’s a lot we’re all juggling. We want to take this opportunity to remind yourself to have grace for yourself and others. He starts off the episode talking about how getting BBQ turns into a death scare! John’s audio drops are superb! Thank you to our listeners who get a kick out of them and voted on which sound drops have been your favorite! Who else is susceptible to the power of suggestion? John and Emily are. John has some anxiety over not feeling well. And this is after the earlier death scare! Isn’t it weird that you don’t wake up while your fever’s breaking? Only after you’re all sweaty. Anger and frustration can be such a confusing emotion, especially in how people release it. Don’t forget to apologize! We apologize for the delay in getting out episodes — we really appreciate your patience with our episode releases. John is doing his own yoga poses now and made his own yoga playpen. We also got a bit carried away with our discussion and we run a little long in this episode. Also, STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT around 55 minutes in — we mark our podcast as explicit anyway, but we want you to know that the C-word is used quite a bit. While we're comfortable saying it, not everyone is comfortable hearing it. We want to be respectful to listeners by giving you an advanced warning if this offends you. When we record this, we are currently in the midst of the Covid-19/coronavirus pandemic. We strive to be as accurate as possible on our podcast, but we are not experts. Emily is doing Maintenance Mode and doing her thing in her plateau. She can see her progress but still getting comfortable with her “new” body. We’re transitioning the show to be less about looking at the scale, but more about trying to get healthy. John’s worried about getting “stuffocated” by brisket and corn bread. John’s going back to more compression on his legs and the whooshie pill again. What was the last vegetable you ate? Usually when Emily’s in a funk, she’ll ask herself that. Even though Emily finds she doesn’t have to count calories, she still realizes that eating healthy will make Future-Emily happy. John’s thinking of trying yoga! We have a nice big yoga discussion and Emily geeked out because this is her favorite form of movement. John likes to use this podcast as a form of therapy, Emily uses her journal for the same reason. Being able to hear or see your own words can help you get a lot of clarity into what you truly feel. John’s best form of dealing with the news is to find the humor in it, and then the internet arguments start. We have some great #WinningWednesday posts, and we’re putting some new prompts in the group! Gratitude is the Attitude! Emily became a certified life coach  — and will soon be certified in mindfulness, as well! Dut-dut! We talk a bit about podcast editing and our workflows toward the end. If you ever wondered what podcast editors do, you might enjoy it! We talk about being people pleasers, both in our work and in our own heads with our self-esteem. STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT! If you are offended by the C*** word, around the 55:00-56:30 mark we say it quite a bit. Oh, we get so silly when we’re procrastinating the weigh-in, LOL. Later, Weighters! This episode was recorded in the beginning of April 2020 for context. We're still getting used to the temporary new-normal of staying indoors and self-quarantining for our own safety. It requires us to learn more planning skills that, luckily, we have already been working on with our own diets. But not like this. In fact, Emily has taken to calling the combination of this + PMS "The Season of Our Discontent". Good thing we still have our sense of humor, although John has deemed himself an Anxetiy-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? In This Episode: John starts off the show with a clip of a toddler upset about how she can’t get all her favorite foods and the tantrum that ensues. And that’s pretty much how John’s reacting. We find our habits have changed from everything that’s going on with the coronavirus pandemic. Don’t take vitamins on an empty stomach! Nope! John now identifies as an Anxiety-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. Do you have triggers for your eating or other habits? That’s one thing we’ve really worked on identifying. We’re also learning how to plan our shopping and eating so we can make our groceries stretch. Emily is celebrating two years of doing Intermittent Fasting! Two years = 90 pounds down = 8 sizes down! It’s weird that this is starting to become a new normal for everyone. Gross-out alert: Both John and Emily admit we both enjoy pizza that’s been left out over refrigerated. Eek! Emily has some morbid curiosity. We apologize in advance. Thank goodness for the #WinningWednesdays posts! We can always use some good news. Thank you for all the memes and affirmations! We had a great discussion in our Facebook group thinking about the lifestyle changes we make to lose weight versus what we are planning on doing once we hit our goal weight and need to maintain. John also had a bout with food poisoning and Emily has shifted her whole schedule to mornings so we're both a little out of our comfort zone. New to Hate to Weight? We apologize if this podcast isn’t always out on Mondays -— like this week! Emily has moved her eating window earlier because of her changing her sleeping schedule to earlier. We talked on last week’s episode about proactive mode versus reactive mode during the day. Emily exploded an egg in her microwave before coming on the show. Apparently, 25 seconds is too long. When you hear us referring to others, it’s our chat room while we record live in the Hate to Weight Facebook group! Deborah posted a question in our group -— how do you balance what you’ll do with your diet versus what you’ll be doing for the rest of your life? What alcohol can you never have again? Emily got a recipe for Easy Italian Chicken Sandwiches and made sandwiches in the Instant Pot (on the Slow Cooker setting) We have our own little recipe section! Should this be an ongoing thing? Our Hate to Cook segment, lol! If you’re going to drink Coke, get it from McDonald’s! There’s a link below about why it tastes so good. Fantastic Winning Wednesday posts this week! This may or may not be affecting her weight. We’ll see! We also talk a lot about the importance of planning, including how we plan. We know we do so much better when we set up a plan, even if we end up having to throw it out the window if something happens. John walks us through how his brain lies to him — can you relate? We talk a lot about planning in this episode and different methods, including writing things down and a deep look at Emily’s weekly and daily writing/planning routines. “Limited Time” gets us every time! Emily has realized that her toddler turns her brain to mush by the end of the day and has to adjust her whole schedule. Emily’s porn is counting down to when preschool begins, for sure. She’s going to bed earlier and waking up earlier, when she can have time to herself to plan before anyone wakes up and puts her in reactive mode. We both realize we need to find a release that’s not food. John needs a Lifing Toolbox! 33:06 Emily breaks down her morning pages and how she plans her day. (Thanks for the question, Craig!) She starts with Morning Pages: 3 pages of freewriting, from the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron; Then she does a to-do list in a bullet journal style, but separates it into three sections: Self-Care, Work, and Home & Family. John W. Love, Jr. | The Perpetually Pregnant Man - Ep. 8

On Life and Meaning

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2017 41:19

John W. Love Jr. is a surreal apparition of a being who creates multi-sensory experiences that invite participants into a world of Yes. He is an interdisciplinary literary and performance artist. His work is as "deliciously complex, circuitous, textual, and contextual as his own nappy hair." He tells stories that are earthen and fantastical. His installations delight and confound. He smears boundaries because "definitions all fit like a fat man in a toddler's big girl dress."  John is a poet, an actor, a dancer, a sculptor, a director and a teller of tales. In his stories characters burn blue. He is a recipient of the Arts & Sciences McColl Award in recognition of artistic excellence and a Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist residency.  He is a North Carolina Artist Council Artist Fellow and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow. His work has brought him to Sweden, Germany, France and points beyond. His insights are flavors in the mind. This episode is perfect for anyone interested in the life-affirming funkiness of a daring interdisciplinary mind and the intentions and expressions of a love warrior mystical being. IN THIS EPISODE John shares the beautifully absurd and wonderfully ridiculous nature of defining himself and his objection to lines of demarcation. He discusses the elements that make up his art and the influence of his meditative practice on his performances and installations. He explains what he means by 'rescuing narrative.' He describes one of his signature performance and installation works and the role salt as a spice played in it and the return of all things to the Source. John talks about several of his characters from Neequa or She Who Would Be King to Roscoe 'The Eggplant' Takimoto to The Perpetually Pregnant Man. He explains the world of Yes, the correct posture for living, and when 'no' is appropriate. He responds to the idea that he and his characters are intertwined and that how he presents himself could very well be a character he has written. He shares whether the responses of others to his work matters to him. John talks about how much of his art is flirtation, how much is consummation, and the sensuality of his work. He reflects on the rewards and constraints of fellowships and recognitions, the yumminess of his applications, and what he refuses to do as an artist seeking support. He reacts to what makes anything art and the power he sees in his own work. John shares what Meryl Streep, Bill T. Jones and Bjork have in common. He describes himself as a young person and what his younger self would recognize and be surprised by his current self. John reads a poem of his called 'Early Morning Ritual.' He responds to rapid-fire questions that he composed that reveals the temperature of his mind, what makes him cry, and the sexiest tool in his arsenal. After the conversation, host Mark Peres adds a personal word that begins this way, "When I hear David talk about cities and memory and song, I'm reminded of the poem Chicago by Carl Sandburg..."
