Song: One Foot/Lead with Love Music by: Melanie DeMore Notes: Melanie DeMore both entrances and intimidates people -- she is direct, funny, a fabulous story-teller, and fierce and broad in her love. I have to apologize to listeners for the sound quality of this interview -- we had some microphone glitches on both sides that means despite the best sound studio wizardry I could come up with, there's some distortion, and it's not the usual quality of sound. But the quality of content -- where it counts -- is top-notch. Melanie shares One Foot/Lead with Love, including the story of what sparked its creation. She talks about her family, and how the wisdom and experiences of her parents shaped the way she approaches people who hold different world views. We talk about coyotes, kids, accolades, how she takes care of herself on tour as a "4-star, card-carrying introvert". She sends us out with a charge: “Here's what you need to do, people out there: keep your head up. Keep your heart wide open. Remember to breathe, and keep doing the work. Sing on.” Songwriter Info: Melanie DeMore is a 3 time Grammy nominated singer/composer, choral conductor, music director, and vocal activist who believes in the power of voices raised together. In her presentations, DeMore beautifully brings her participants together through her music and commentary. DeMore facilitates vocal and stick-pounding workshops for professional choirs, and community groups as well as directing numerous choral organizations across the U.S, Canada, and beyond. She is a featured presenter of SpeakOut!-The Institute for Social and Cultural Change, the Master Teaching Artist for Music at UC Berkeley/CalPerformances; works with everyone from Baptists to Buddhists, and was a founding member of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir. She is Music Director for Obeah Opera by Nicole Brooks and will be touring with the company to South Africa. She is a charter member of Threshold Choir founded by Kate Munger, a mentor to the Jerusalem Youth Chorus and conducts song circles with an emphasis on the voice as a vessel for healing. In her own words: "A song can hold you up when there seems to be no ground beneath you." In this special partnered podcast, RCEM President Dr Adrian Boyle and Mary Watkins, a crossbench peer, discuss one of the most problematic areas in the NHS: urgent care. Labour has promised an NHS "fit for the future" and “to get a grip on the record waiting list” of 7.6 million people that is blighting the health service. But aside from long waits for GP appointments, referrals and treatment of non-urgent health conditions, A&E waiting times are at record highs. Long waits and overcrowding have caused the deaths of people seeking urgent care. How can the new Health Secretary Wes Streeting make a dent in this crisis? Hosted on Acast. In November 1972 as Ms. Magazine hit the newsstands with its inaugural issue, Joan Gelfand left the comforts of Forest Hills, NY and summers in the Catskills for a trip to San Francisco. That vacation became a journey that lasted a lifetime, and a moment in history that is unparalleled. In OUTSIDE VOICES: A Memoir of the Berkeley Revolution (January 28, 2024; Post Hill Press; ISBN: 979-8888450048; $28.99 Hardcover), Joan Gelfand, award-winning author and nationally acclaimed literary citizen, shares her story of awakening-artistically, sexually, and spiritually-during a radical time in a remarkable place. Writing with honesty and lyrical grace, Joan recounts a story of healing from devastating loss while honing her craft as a poet in the midst of cataclysmic social change in which the Beat Generation was born. Finding a 'room of her own' in a quiet, wood shingled house in Berkeley, she finds her tribe: like-minded feminists and artists. Says Joan, "Women are creating safe spaces where they can find their voices in art, books, music, recording, feminist theory, or just plain banging a hammer and competing in a world typically run by men."Bolstered by new friends Cloud, a poet and artist with a tinkling laugh, and Nancy, a working musician, Outside Voices gives a backstage view of artists and thinkers who went on to great things, including a young waitress named Suze (Orman), film maker Barbara Hammer, writers Judy Grahan, Gloria Andaluza, Pat Parker and musicians Mary Watkins, Linda Tillery and more. Hard on the heels of the Free Speech Movement, the Summer of Love and the Beats' disruption of culture and literature, Berkeley was a fertile proving ground. OUTSIDE VOICES tells the coming-of-age story of a damaged teenager putting the pieces back together as she explores independence and self-definition while grappling with sexuality, Jewish identity, and the lingering trauma of her father's death.

Mary Watkins, Baroness Watkins, is a veritable legend in the world of nursing and there is no more qualified voice to address the current state of our NHS and the difficulties that come with being a nurse, than she.
Most of us have experienced feelings of doubt and unworthiness at some point in our lives. But when our accomplishments are a result of our own knowledge, hard work, and preparation and we still feel inadequate ... we're probably suffering from impostor syndrome. The impostor “syndrome” is a feeling that if we've achieved something it is not because of our competencies, but because of some oversight or stroke of luck. We therefore feel like frauds or “impostors.” and we tend to discount the hard work we have done. Andrew and Louise discuss Imposter Syndrome with Mary Watkins, a local mental health counsellor. They find the whole experience of chatting with Mary so enlightening and by the end of the podcast both Andrew and Louise had a few light bulb moments. 1m: 48s What Is It? 5m :09s What Does It Feel Like? 5m: 55s How Can We Recognise It? 10m: 38s Where Does It All Start? 13m : 06s Who Is More Susceptible? 14m: 02s How Limiting Can It Be? 22m: 09s What Can We Do About It? 23m :48s Going To See A Counsellor 26m: 23s Social Media Pressure 30m: 05s Shiny Object Syndrome 30m: 49s How Do We Know When The Need To Continually Learn Is Problematic? 35m: 27s Supporting And Helping Others Episode notes Clance, P. and Imes, S., 1978. Alley Theater "Dead Man's Cellphone" -- Lesbian activist Ginny BersonWe speak with Todd Waite about the Alley Theater's production of "Dead Man's Cellphone". An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man. So begins Dead Man's Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative comedy by MacArthur “Genius” Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House). An off-the-wall play about the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. GUEST: Todd Waite https://www.alleytheatre.org/plays/production-detail/dead-mans-cell-phoneThen, we speak with Ginny Z Berson. Ginny Z Berson is a long-time political activist driven by a longing for justice. She was a member of The Furies-- a radical lesbian feminist separatist collective in Washington, D.C. that lived and worked collectively to develop lesbian feminist political thought and philosophy. The group produced a newspaper, The Furies, that had a significant impact on women's groups in the U.S. Ginny was a contributor and member of the editorial staff. Ginny and her partner, the musician Meg Christian, were the initial driving force behind the creation of Olivia Records, the national women's record company. Olivia produced records by Meg, Cris Williamson, BeBe K'Roche, Linda Tillery, Teresa Trull, Mary Watkins, a poetry album by Pat Parker and Judy Grahn, and Lesbian Concentrate—a “lesbianthology” in response to a rising wave of homophobia. This is the first episode of my short 4 part series on Soul and Community Development. Building on my two books Creating Us: Community work with soul, and Soul, Community and Social Change, we explore what I mean by soul, drawing on the depth psychology tradition (C. Jung, James Hillman, Mary Watkins, Marian Woodman) and consider what it all might mean for community development. It's exciting stuff - from the heights of the Icarus Myth to the depths of Covid ruins.

The focus of the discussion is the late American archetypal psychologist, James Hillman. Hillman's work marks a deviation from his psychoanalytic predecessors in a way that has extended implications for anti-capitalist politics and other forms of activism. In the discussion, we cover various aspects and practice surrounding Hillman's ideas, especially as they relate to social justice work and the concept of masculinity. Some figures covered in the discussion include Deleuze, Guattari, Hegel, Freud, Jung, Jordan Peterson, and Mary Watkins.Contribute to Acid Horizon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastSubscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhi Happy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comNew Revolts (Matt's Blog): https://newrevolts.com/Revolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/
June Millington, director Bobbi Jo Hart and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their fun, engaging, long overdue new film Fanny: The Right to Rock. They touch on sexism in the industry, liberation, your inner compass, poetry, safe spaces and role models, racism and why it’s so important to play it forward.“Revivify Fanny. And my work will be done.” David BowieTrailerTo learn more about the band and their work head here. For more information about IMA go to www.ima.orgSynopsis:Fanny: The Right to Rock opens with the words of David Bowie, bemoaning the band’s fate: “One of the most important bands in American rock has been buried without a trace.” The film then takes us deep into the woods of Goshen, Massachusetts, where we discover the Institute for the Musical Arts. It’s an underground music camp and recording studio for girls and women only, where Fanny lead guitarist June Millington, 69, has been teaching young girls to rock out long before rock camps became “a thing.”There, she and fellow Filipina-American bandmates, including her bass-playing sister Jean and drummer Brie Darling, celebrate their 50-year reunion with a new rock record deal -- cheekily titled Fanny Walked the Earth. If the stars align, it’s a chance to right the wrongs of music history.Fanny: The Right to Rock juxtaposes an intimate, cinema verité journey of Fanny’s uphill battle to complete and release their new album, with the fascinating herstory of the band’s improbable journey during their 70s heyday. Their controversial, self-penned lyrics dared embrace the newfound freedom of birth control as well as the trauma of the Vietnam War.Discovered early on by the secretary of legendary producer Richard Perry and signed as teenagers to the epic Warner/Reprise label,Fanny honed their signature sound in edgy L.A. clubs like The Troubadour. Fanny Hill, hosted regular jam sessions with visitors/crashers including Joe Cocker, Little Feat, and Bob Dylan’s The Band. There, serious rock & roll comingled with sex, drugs and skinny dipping.Fanny toured extensively across North America and Europe with major groups including Slade, Chicago and Ike & Tina Turner. They toured while writing, recording and releasing a new album every year from 1970 -75. They performed live and gave interviews on major network TV shows with Dick Cavett, Sonny & Cher, Helen Reddy and The Tonight Show, as well as the famed BBC show “The Old Grey Whistle Test”.The movie includes testimonials from Kate Pierson of the B-52s, Bonnie Raitt, Cherie Currie of The Runaways, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Gos, and Bowie bassist Gail Ann Dorsey. Male music icons also sing their praises including Todd Rundgren, Charles Neville of The Neville Brothers, The Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott (who unveils a Fanny flexi-disc he has saved for 50 years, since he discovered the band at age 12).About June Millington and Bobbi Jo Hart:Bobbi Jo Hart is an award winning American/Canadian documentary filmmaker with Adobe Productions International, based in Montreal, Canada. With a career that has spanned 25 years, Hart has filmed in countries as diverse as Pakistan, Russia, Guatemala, Australia, Scotland and Zimbabwe — with subjects ranging from women’s professional soccer and tennis to classical music, comedy, dance and manic depression. Her documentary films have the most common thread of revealing untold stories of marginalized girls and women, weaving universal threads of dreams, family, love, loss, happiness, sadness, success, failure and determination. Her intimate, cinema verité style results in thought-provoking films that ultimately celebrate our shared humanity. Her most recent feature documentary I Am Not A Rock Star premiered at dozens of worldwide film festivals and was broadcast on networks in many countries, including BBCFour, SVT Sweden, ABC Australia, Documentary Channel. Music in the film included Jack Johnson & Patrick Watson. This film won many festival awards as well. Hart’s previous award-winning films include SHE GOT GAME: Behind-the-Scenes of the Women's Tennis Tour (LIFE Network, Starz), which had exclusive access during over a year on tour. Hart is currently starting the festival tour for her exclusive theatrical documentary celebrating Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (Documentary Channel, ARTV).June Millington “one of the hottest female guitarists in the industry” wrote, Guitar Player Magazine has been making music since she was a child playing ukulele in her native Philippines. Having moved from Manila to California in the early sixties, she and her sister bassist Jean turned in their folk guitars for electric and formed a succession of all-girl bands. By ‘69 they were in Hollywood with their band Fanny, which was one of the first all-women’s rock band to be signed to a major label (Reprise). Through five successful albums and extensive touring of Europe and North America, Fanny served notice that women could do more than simply sing, they could write and play passionate rock ‘n roll. As David Bowie said of the group in an interview with Rolling Stone (RS January 2000): “They were extraordinary: They wrote everything...they are as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever....”Fanny played with major artists like Chicago, BB King, Dr John, the Kinks, the Staples Singers, Ike and Tina Turner, & Chuck Berry - and recorded an album at Apple Studios with Geoff Emerick, the Beatles engineer. June left the band in 1973 and continued to record and perform with her sister and on a number of solo albums. She played in the genre of women’s music for many years, and produced records by artists Cris Williamson, Holly Near, Mary Watkins, Melanie DeMore, and Bitch and Animal, among others. She is the co-founder and Artistic Director of the non-profit Institute for the Musical Arts [IMA], an internationally known teaching, performing and recording facility supporting women and girls in music and music-related business. Founded by June, along with partner Ann Hackler, activist/writer Angela Davis, and engineer/producer Roma Baran, IMA expanded into a 25- acre campus in Goshen, MA which runs five residential summer programs for girls and young women from 9-24 and hosts shows and workshops with established artists the rest of the year.Millington has received numerous awards for her achievements including the Audio Engineering Society’s Lifetime Achievement award, the Bay Area Career Women’s LAVA award for being a “leg- end of women’s music,” the Outmusic Heritage Award and in 2007 she, along with the other members of FANNY, received the Rockrgrl Women of Valor Award at Berklee College of Music. In 2013 she received New England Public Radio’s (NEPR) Arts and Humanities Outstanding Individual of the Year Award, the Veteran Feminists of America Award and, along with her partner Ann Hackler the Outstanding Activist Award from the Living Kindness Foundation. In 2015 she was given an award for her contributions by the National Women’s Music Festival.June released her autobiography Land of a Thousand Bridges: Island Girl in a Rock ‘n Roll World in June of 2015 and has received a great deal of press, including articles in MS Magazine, Pitchfork and Newsweek as well as on NPR. Millington continues to perform, write and record and teaches at IMA as well as colleges and universities around North America.Image Copyright and Credit: Adobe Productions International and Bobbi Jo Hart.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. Her 2019 book, Mutual Accompaniment and the Creation of the Commons, challenges us to come alongside people in relationships grounded in “horizontality, interdependence, and potential mutuality.” Her book explores examples where radical hospitality and intentional community have created communities of resistance and places of recovery for people marginalized by their disabilities or social status. Franco Basaglia’s vision and how it played out in Trieste is explored in her book. She imagines a model of mutual solidarity which has the potential to help us navigate the complex dynamics of a society that is more dis-unified than unified.Biography: Mary Watkins, Ph.D., works at the interface between Euro-American depth psychologies and psychologies of liberation from Latin America, Africa, North America, and Asia, promoting peacebuilding and social and environmental justice through the teaching and practicing of critical, dialogical, and participatory approaches. September 2018 Every year, close to the anniversary of GC&CS staff first arriving at Bletchley Park in 1939 we invite our Veterans and their families back to celebrate their vital war work. It’s our favourite day of the year at the Museum and it allows us to share their amazing stories with our listeners. This year also coincides with the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Auxiliary Territorial Service or ATS, the woman’s branch of the British Army during World War 2. To celebrate, our Veterans were given a sneak peek at our new ATS pop-up exhibition. In this, the first of two episodes this month, we will take you to this year’s reunion and listen in as Betty Webb and Mary Watkins reminisce about their time in the ATS, the gas masks, the knickers and how it changed both their lives. Also we hear from Doris Moss, who arrived at Bletchley in 1942 after escaping the German advance in Belgium two years earlier and went on to break both Italian & Japanese codes. Finally actress and drama teacher Elizabeth Davies tells us how she was plucked from Balliol College Oxford to help crack Japanese Naval Codes. This week, we're keeping things simple, streamlined, for our women's liberation music hour. Simple and streamlined, yet elegant and deep. Featuring talented composer Mary Watkins and readings from the classic novel, The Wanderground, by Sally Miller Gearheart, we will take a journey with sound and story guided by these two sisters of the revolution. Here is an introduction to these two women of power: Ms. Watkins is the recipient of several granting foundations such as Meet the Composer, National Endowment for the Arts, Gerbodi Foundation, Zellerbach Family Fund and Calfornia Council for the Arts. She is an eclectic composer. She is also a pianist, arranger, recording artist and record producer. Much of her music reflects a love for many styles of music whether jazz, gospel, Latin, country, rock, classical or pop. She has composed for solo piano for both adults and children, wind ensembles, string quartet, chamber and full symphony orchestra. She has also composed for theater, dance and film, songs for solo vocalists, vocal ensembles and large choruses. In 2015 she was commissioned by Women in Music to write a 22 minute symphonic work for the National Women's Music Festival which was premeired in July, 2016 in Middleton Wisconsin. She has completed three operas, Queen Clara, with Lance Belville as librettist, and her second opera, Dark River, in which she composed both music and libretto, commissioned by and premiered at the Oakland Opera Theater and later premiered on the east coast at Mt. Holyoke College. The production of her latest opera, Emmett Till, created with Clara Coss as librettist, is currently in the planning stages with The Harlem Lyric Opera Theatre Company for the 2018-2019 performance season. Play List: All music from Mary Watkins' album, SpiritSong: 1. Comin' Home 2. Mirrors 3. Playground 4.Manhattan Mist 5. Spirit Song 6. Moonlight Chapel 7. Changing Seasons While continuing her work as a composer, Mary Watkins continues to perform both solo piano and as part of her ensemble group. She conducts improvisation workshops, and teaches piano and music theory privately in Oakland, CA. She will be performing on the 45th anniversary tour with Olivia Cruises in early April! Sally Miller Gearhart is an American teacher, feminist, science fiction writer, and political activist. In 1973 she became the first open lesbian to obtain a tenure-track faculty position when she was hired by San Francisco State University, where she helped establish one of the first women and gender study programs in the country. She later became a nationally known gay rights activist. Enjoy these two treasures, combined into one hour! Blessed be. Phoenixx
