Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 21, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Pius X, Pope (1835-1914).It is also the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Knock, Ireland. On August 21, 1879, she appeared with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, and Jesus Christ in the form of a lamb — the Lamb of God — on an altar with a cross in the background at the parish church of the village of Knock in County Mayo. The miracle was witnessed by 15 people.No words were spoken in the hours-long apparition, but it was received as an inspiring image of instruction and heavenly solidarity.Pius X was an intrepid defender of the purity of Christian doctrine. He worked to restore the Church's worship, so that people would find beauty in their public prayer. The Very Reverend Father Matthew Crane to explains the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX): its founding in 1970 to form priests, growing conflicts with Vatican II teachings, suppression in 1975 and subsequent disobedience culminating in unauthorized episcopal consecrations in 1988 and again on July 1, 2026. He clarifies that SSPX priests are validly ordained and that Pope Francis granted provisions for valid confessions and marriages under certain conditions which Pope Leo XIV upheld until recent ordinations which resulted in excommunication. Father Crane outlines how excommunication applies to the bishops involved and the SSPX clergy who formally adhere to the schism, while lay attendees require individual discernment. He also notes the location of SSPX chapels in the diocese and urges Catholics to pursue unity of the Church through charity, prayer and attention to the Church's liturgical prayers for unity.

On July 1st, Pope Leo XIV and the DDF declared the Society of St Pius X to be excommunicated. This obviously has massive repercussions for the clergy of that order, but also for thousands of lay people who have been attending SSPX liturgies. Bishop Caggiano has written that "my heart goes out to them at this painful moment, and I want them to know that they remain very much a part of our diocesan family". Dixit ei : Pasce oves meas.Joseph Sarto was born at Riese in Venetia on June 2, 1835. He was successively curate, parish priest, bishop of Mantua, patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope on August 4, 1903. As chief pastor of the church he realised to the full value of the liturgy as the prayer of the Church and spared no effort to propagate the practice of frequent and daily Communion. He died on August 20, 1914 and was canonised on May 29, 1954.
