POPULARITY
Matt Cremona is unusual in the world of woodworking because he not only builds high end furniture, but he cuts down the trees and mills the lumber from those trees to make that furniture. In 2016 Matt built his own bandsaw mill which allows him to make lumber out of really big logs. Amazingly, Matt's most popular video is 42 minutes long and shows how he used his bandsaw mill to make slabs. It's a fascinating look at all the labor that goes into milling lumber and gives viewers insight into the finer details of a process most of us have never seen before. Let alone, the impact of seeing that it's just one guy doing this in his yard. Most recently, Matt moved into a huge new home that he's renovating and making even huger by building an addition to the space, which he's documenting and sharing on YouTube. On "Beyond the Classroom", we talk to people who use their platform to teach others. From self-taught woodworkers and urban gardeners to roller skaters and craft brewers, we meet people who have turned their passions into careers. This week we spoke with Matt Cremona, a Minnesota based Urban Logger who sources his materials from urban lumber that would otherwise end up in a landfill. We talk about how his passion and resourcefulness helped him to create a career that he loves.
When Matt Cremona decides to build an heirloom piece of furniture, he doesn’t just wander over to the local lumber store and pickup some lumber. That would be too easy. Matt’s an urban logger so it’s more far likely that he found a recently cut down tree in the city, hauled it home on his log trailer, sawed it on his custom bandsaw mill, dried it in his backyard, and then got on with building the furniture. His whole process is amazing and today Matt will tell us a bit more about that, and more specifically, about the fully custom logging trailer that he’s been building over the last few months. Yes a whole trailer. Matt is also co-host of the Wood Talk podcast, so check that out as well! Woodworking Q&A with special guest, Matt Cremona!
Get an inside look at how a former retired city worker is building a prolific and profitable portable sawmill business. Hear how he started, his partnerships, and what tools he used to grow his business. Aaron is also a current client of Acres of Timber! Check out his website at http://crosscutlumber.com and follow him on Instagram at http://instagram.com/crosscutlumber. What exactly is a Woodpreneur? So, why the term “woodpreneur”? When Steve first started Acres of Timber three years ago, the wood community and industry wasn't what it is now. Slab dealers, wood designers, and more specifically at the time – sawmill users, didn't have a community or a brand and were going largely unnoticed by potential customers who would look instead to the Home Depot and Lowe's of this world for their products. Steve sought to change that by creating the Sawmill Business Instagram account and the #sawmillbusiness hashtag as a way to share the products and creations that these innovative makers were producing. It didn't take long for the account to grow to over 136,000 followers and with a hashtag that has been used over 35,000 times, the Sawmill Business community grew and grew quickly! As the Sawmill Business following grew, Steve began to notice that this community didn't just include sawmill owners. Furniture designers, woodworkers, arborists, tree climbers, chainsaw users, slab sellers, and even tree house makers became an integral part of the Sawmill Business family as well. It was at this point that Steve knew the business needed a new name that would truly encompass all that the wood community represents. Hence, @acresoftimber and the term “Woodprener” was born. With the maker movement now in full swing, there are more podcasts, content creators, (like Anne of All Trades) youtubers, and makers, (such as Matt Cremona) that are putting a spotlight on sawmill users, furniture makers, and other wood related niches. Not only has the wood community turned into a “maker movement” it's also filled with people who now view the work that they do as a profitable business and not just a hobby. A perception that was lacking without a community behind it. Matt Cremona (@MattCremona) is best known for his woodworking video channel on YouTube. Primarily self-taught, Matt challenges himself to build beautiful furniture, going so far as to cut and prepare the timber, documenting the forest-to-finished-piece process along the way. Matt's background is diverse, with previous work in software development, interface design, and economics. Together we discuss wood, carpentry and essential tools, and producing a weekly video show. Check out his videos and some of his work at MattCremona.com Show Notes & Links Woodworking with Matt Cremona on YouTube Matt calls himself a “furniture maker” because he doesn't focus on pure design Matt, a former software designer, learned to build and maintain homes by working for his landlord Unlike most woodworkers, Matt will take a piece from forest to showroom.
