We have some New Jersey love for this one! Jared Hart of Mercy Union and formerly of The Scandals joins the pod in episode No. 116. There are some incredible stories about Hart growing up in the punk scene of NJ. Hart has been hooked on punk since hearing Rancid in the school yard at a young age. It continued throughout his time going to the Asbury Lanes and some of New Jersey's punk venues. Music eventually opened up his world. He was finally able to see the world being in a band, something Hart never thought he would be able to do. He also made valuable friendships which he still holds close to him to this day. Jersey is often considered a "B market" when people plan tours with New York and Philly surrounding the state, but a bunch of the great bands are here (for example Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, and The Front Bottoms). Hart talks about bands around him growing up and how they paved the way for his ability to tour and continue to write songs. Some awesome bands mentioned in this episode and Jared has incredible stories from when he was breaking into the scene. In the words of Hart: "Everyone knows a band is from Jersey, no one is hiding it." We also go into some deep subjects like watching his best friends leave bands and music as whole, and trying to keep the passion for writing through all of that. Hart says music is the only thing he is comfortable doing and the only thing he ever wanted to do. We also hear about Scandals stories, a band that accomplished so much, and never truly had a formal ending - but Hart says he was burnt out from playing the songs (leaves the door open for a show sometime down the road). We close out this episode talking about his current project, Mercy Union, and what they are currently working on. This week I get to hang out with fellow Jersey boy Jared Hart of MERCY UNION and THE SCANDALS. I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing Jared perform throughout his career, most recently his solo performance at one of my favorite joints, Crossroads. Jared and I find we have a ton to talk about when it comes to all things music. We dive deep into the most recent MERCY UNION song “Prussian Blue.” It's not something we normally do, since we all own the songs we listen to, and form our own meaning, but it happened and the story is great. Throughout the show show Jared shares his stories with great pride and without prejudice. Remembering scenes and pushing for talented people are at the heart of this story and Jared does it graciously. Join Jared and I as we “Remember When” the “Fever Dreams” run through our past in the “Basements” we grow to long for!

In our 99th episode, we're joined by Benny Horowitz, Drummer of The Gaslight Anthem and Mercy Union. Benny is a 90s OG, having booked and played shows for over 25 years at this point. We dig into Benny's DIY roots in the NJ punk/hardcore scene, the start of The Gaslight Anthem, signing to SideOneDummy, eventually signing to a major label and everything that comes with it — and much more. Benny's conversation chops rival his ability to crush the drums, and we couldn't have asked for more. This is another can't miss episode! Transition music: Mercy Union - "Chips and Vics" from the 'The Quarry' LP. We'd love for everyone to hear this episode! Brit and Tim from the ska-band, Catbite join us this week from Philly to talk about the trials of the van and some truly wacky Covid experiences that they refused to let keep them down. Also dog-bites vs cat-bites... very informative.
This week we flipped it and took questions from our listeners. That's right, just Benny and Brad getting up close and personal with their own thoughts and ideas. Elevators, ska, getting lost in the woods... and that sweet, hot first love, aaah.
Rocky is a New Jersey workhorse. He and Jeff get into the struggles of being a musician, being creative, staying creative and--of fucking course--Bruce Springsteen. Rocky plays in Mercy Union, completed a 'Covered-20' charitable release project this year during quarantine, and has a solo record coming in 2021. Most importantly, Rocky is great person who is always in the mode of self-improvement; that's something we can all support!Sponsored by NooWave Coffee. Mustard Plug is an American ska punk band from Grand Rapids, Michigan, consisting of Dave Kirchgessner (vocals), Brandon Jenison (trumpet), Jim Hofer (trombone), Nate Cohn (drums), Colin Clive (guitar/vocals), and Rick Johnson (bass). Formed in 1991, the band has regularly toured throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America. They have toured with the Warped Tour twice and participated in the Ska Against Racism Tour. As of 2014, the band has released seven studio albums and continues to tour actively. Explaining the band's goal, Jim Hofer said, "We may have some messages in our music, but essentially we just do this because we love it and we want people to lighten up and have fun." Thank you to Aaron Carnes (Episode 111) for the intro to Dave. Well, how about that! The guys took a break from their "busy" lives and graced us with a new episode of Dying Scene Radio! Guess they couldn't be bothered to find an awesome band to interview but they're back nonetheless. Not only are they back, they brought a ton of music from new and emerging artists that you were probably too lazy to discover with 'em! But, but, but, wait it gets better (or worse depending on how you look at it) they're also covering some of the most noteworthy scene news from the last few weeks so you don't have to scour the internets. Benny Horowitz was a show promoter at the Manville, NJ Elks Lodge back in the late 90s. You also might know him from his bands Mercy Union and Gaslight Anthem. I obviously heard of Gaslight but had no idea he promoted shows until Roadie Extraordinaire, Monkey Cipriano filled me in and then made an intro. Benny was more than excited to spend close to 2 hours talking about the scene. Fun fact, this interview was going to be a 2 parter because we had to end the first part of the interview and continue a week later. However, since I have a special guest for Episode 50, I decided to keep this as one interview. Plus, this is a podcast so suck it up. I got Benny on the phone, twice, and this is what we talked about: Gaslight Anthem’s current status Ricky Saporta The Morris County Youth Crew His thoughts on Manville, NJ Drinking at Elks Lodges Crazy show stories John Hiltz doing sound E-Town Concrete broken mic story Monkey The World Famous Roadie Dealing with band contracts Earth Crisis How a 16-year-old kid prints flyers with he’s broke The magic of pagers The ABA The Fantasy baseball league And a ton more Before we begin, this week’s episode is sponsored by my new book “How To Get Divorced.
