As one of those lunatics who tends to collect anything and everything asoociated with artists I love, it’s probably no surprise that I have quite a few tribute albums devoted to The Replacements. When Let the Bad Times Roll (a Tribute to The Replacements) was released earlier this month, I did a deep dive in my archives and discovered that I actually owned seven of these types of records. With that in mind, it was a no-brainer to do a show devoted to nothing but Replacements tribute albums. The seven records represented tonight have been released throughout the last three decades, and include releases originating in Australi and Italy. There’s a few semi-big names but there are as many, if not more, bands whose career I know nothing about. I also made myself a challenge that I would try not to duplicate any songs…and I succeeded! There are 35 different Replacements tracks covered by 35 different artists. Ok, there is one artist who appears twice – Mikey Erg’s band, Ergs, covers “I’m in Trouble” while as a solo act he performs “Wake Up” Just because the overall theme revolves around The Replacements doesn’t mean that I’m ignoring the “52 Weeks of Teenage […]

It's the return of the legendary Mikey Erg on Behind the Vinyl - this time for an in-person interview before The Ergs! show in Asbury Park last month. This interview is a little more focused on The Ergs! so if you are a fan of the band this is definitely a discussion for you. We talked about the return of pop punk when The Ergs! first formed, The Fest and how it's the best show anyone will play the entire year, the “final” show at the Asbury Lanes in 2008, the band originally breaking up but since teaming up again and building momentum (New songs + and more shows), playing a handful of West Coast shows last year, carrying the hometown of Old Bridge with them, putting out two new EPs last year, working with Steve Albini for a solo record, and how his solo self titled record could had been a The Ergs! record.

Christian Lesperance is the mastermind behind Jersey Interchange, a collaboration series that reimagines the songs of the New Jersey punk, hardcore, emo, and ska scenes of the late 90s and early 2000s. Christian joins Andrea on the podcast today because Jersey Interchange is releasing its debut full-length album C1, out May 5th on Sinking Ship Records. C1 features covers of artists who made their name in the Jersey scene (bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart) covered by artists who also made their name in the Jersey scene (in bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart). This album is an absolute Jersey love fest, but it's also just a collection of really great covers of really great songs and an example of something really beautiful that celebrates collaboration and expression and community and all that good stuff we could use a little more of these days.Pre-orders for C1 have already started. They'll be celebrating the album with a release show on May 13th at Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham NJ. Folks from bands including Shades Apart, Vision, Lanemeyer, NJ Joystick, Avery, One cool Guy, right Turn Eddie and lots more will be taking turns playing acoustic sets, and the whole thing will be headlined by comedian and Jersey punk diehard, Chris Gethard. Here in AZ, we're psyched to catch the show at the Crescent Ballroom on May 20.Laura kept real busy during the pandemic, and was a frequent DJ on Vans Channel 66, where she exclusively played music released post-2020. She also put out a killer EP, At War With The Silverfish, and was recently elected as a governor of the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy—that's the GRAMMYs. Laura sat down with Brandon Michel to chat about the challenges of touring in 2022, the 15th anniversary of Against Me!'s landmark album New Wave, what she's been listening to, and get into her habits, which include running, drinking absurd amounts of coffee, and dominating foosball tables nationwide. If you liked this chat, please subscribe to the WASTOIDS audio feed wherever you get podcasts—you can leave a rating and a review while you're at it. Visit Laura Jane Grace on Bandsintown for a full list of upcoming shows and ticket links. Wanna share your thoughts on Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, Against Me! or anything else? All you have to do is call 1-877-WASTOIDS to get in touch.

This week's guest is Laura Jane Grace! In addition to being the singer and founding member of Against Me!, Grace is also an author and an accomplished solo artist. Before setting out on The Carousel Tour — which will take place all around the U.S. throughout the month of May, including a May 2 show at The Rave — she spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the collaborative tour, which also features Anthony Green, Tim Kasher, Mikey Erg, and more; other recent solo shows; and her extensive musical history. Over the course of the conversation, Grace talked about listening to her dad's music collection as a kid, starting bands in middle school, the early years and steady evolution of Against Me!, some of the most memorable artistic experiences she's had over the course of her career, and things she hopes to do in the years to come. Along the way, Grace talked about a song that was at least partially inspired by The Rave swimming pool and Maas showed his lack of Florida geography knowledge. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering, Lakefront Brewery and Music Go Round Greenfield. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Laura Jane Grace ("The Swimming Pool Song").

Some of those groups include: WORRIERS, Jon Snodgrass, All Away Lou and oh so many more! In this late night call, we sit back and sip IPA's and chat the night away. We cover a lot of ground. We talk about SPARKS, Growing as a songwriter, Working with Steve Albini, Descedents and oh so much more! Question The Answers
Lauren Denitzio - Worriers

Question The Answers

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2021 50:56

Lauren Denitzio is the driving force behind the band Worriers. They began the band after having been in another band called The Measure, and have now released 3 full-length albums along with a few EPs, most recently a 5-song album of cover songs featuring their take on Rancid, Tom Petty, The New Pornographers and more. Now in their 10th year of existence, Worriers has established themselves as a true standout in the current punk scene, and have been able to partner with labels like No Idea, 6131, Don Giovanni, Side One Dummy along with self-releasing material. On top of this, they have worked with some really fantastic producers including Laura Jane Grace and John Agnello. The band is essentially Lauren's project, and is currently backed by Nick Psillas on bass and Mikey Erg on drums and Frank Piegaro (formerly of the band Ensign) on guitar. As Lauren describes in the episode, having a certain fluidity in the make up of the band has allowed them to take on more opportunities and not be as restricted by what sometimes conventional band structures might otherwise hinder. Josh Goldman is someone that has found a way to make punk rock his job, and he takes it very seriously. Mind you, he still manages to have a lot of fun while performing in his bands The Raging Nathans, The Dopamines and others. Along with that, he owns and operates a killer independent punk label called Rad Girlfriend Records, who have worked with the likes of DFMK, Mikey Erg, The Queers, Western Settings, Strangelight, and more. What started in earnest as a way to release his own records, Rad Girlfriend has turned into quite a record making machine, seeing year over year growth, with this most recent crazy dumpster fire of a year being no exception. Many of his most recent albums sold out while in pre-order, forcing re-presses before they were even released. His main band The Raging Nathans just released a brand new ripper of an album (with a track from that album able to be heard at the end of the podcast), and he's not showing any signs of slowing down at all. During the episode, we talk about what it's like to run a record label... the good, the bad, the ugly. We chat a bit about what it's like to meet your heroes.... also the good, the bad, the ugly. We bond a bit over our appreciation of Dicky Barrett of The BossToneS, and he of course shares some of his favorite bands and 5 desert island album pics with me. Why would you buy more than one of the "same" pedal? When does a clone stop being a clone? How many ways are there to make toast? All of these questions and more are answered, or at least asked on this week's episode with punk rock poly math Chris Pierce from Volume IV studio and too many bands to list (ok, we'll try, Doc Hopper, Sinkhole, Deadguy, Faux Replika, Mikey Erg...)
