This week, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why?  Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  This ep. ZZ Ward began singing at the age of 8, inspired by her father's extensive blues collection. By 12, she was already performing blues music, and it helped steer every aspect of her early career, from her musical sound to her signature Fedora. But as a professional female musician, she often felt pressured to compromise her blues roots to meet industry demands. She quickly became a buzzed-about artist, earning a major label deal and breaking into Billboard's Top 40 with her debut release. Her sophomore album hit #1 on the Billboard Blues chart, highlighted by singles featuring GRAMMY-Award winners Fantastic Negrito and Gary Clark Jr. We talk about her new album, life as a mom, touring with Slash and so much more.

ZZ Ward has a powerful, soulful voice, a great ear for hooks and an old-school blues-rock sensibility fused with hip-hop rhythms, all playing out on a spaghetti-western landscape. Her third album, Dirty Shine, comes out Sept. 8 and is her first as a mother as well as an independent artist after two albums (Til the Casket Drops and The Storm) with Disney's Hollywood label. Her DIY approach certainly hasn't curbed her artistic ambitions: The new album includes collaborations with Vic Mensa and Aloe Blacc, her brother Adam William Ward directed mini-movies for several of the songs, and she even made (and sells) the fedoras she wears in them. My daughter Ruthie Caro, who turned me on to ZZ Ward's music years ago, joins this lively conversation with one of her musical heroes.

If there's anything to be learned from the monumental successes of Beyonce and Taylor Swift, it's that music artists can do more than simply record and perform music. Certainly, each has established themselves as exceptional artists. But they have also cultivated remarkably strong seemingly interpersonal bonds with their fans ranging from Beyonce's “Bee Hive” to Taylor's “Swifties.”  A few rungs down the ladder, yet furiously climbing higher and higher, sits the uniquely engaging Zsuzsanna Eva Ward. She is better known as ZZ Ward and was our most recent guest on The Load Out music podcast.  Ward's fan community is known as “Dirty Shine,” a term revolving around being one's authentic self—imperfections and vulnerabilities included. The term itself, “Dirty Shine,” that is, has become something of a mission statement and rallying cry for the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose alternative, blues and hip-hop-blending music has quietly exploded amongst her passionate fanbase. “The concept of ‘Dirty Shine' is larger than the record,” Ward said of her new album. “When I put out my first album (2012's Til the Casket Drops), my fans and I started saying we are dirty shine. It was about embracing who you are—we are all dirty, a little rough around the edges. I've always had this vibe, but I feel like this time in my life is like dirty shine on steroids. I can fully be myself, and nothing can stop me.”  Ward, however, has gone beyond embracing her who she is, embracing her fans and polishing that dirty shine through her relationships each and every day, noting that she chats “with my fans on Discord every day.” Ward's Til the Casket Drops made a notable entry into the AAA Radio Charts Top 10. Her sophomore album, The Storm, clinched the number one spot on the Billboard Blues Charts. On her third and latest effort, Dirty Shine sets a new bar as more of a cinematic piece with a diverse blend of sounds—from bold electronic textures, rugged hip-hop beats, to juke joint harmonica. The album was recorded in collaboration with renowned producers such as Ludwig Göransson, Mike Elizondo, Jason Evigan and more. The single "On One," features Jean Deaux and is inspired by Ward's new role as a mother. It carries an empowering message, defying the stereotype that motherhood equates to weakness.   “You just have to run your own race and do your own thing,” Ward said. As Ward expands her role in making music she has gone beyond artist and become a video director, record label owner, a new mom, and she hand-makes versions of her signature fedoras that are available for purchase via her website Watch her polish that dirty shine as we enjoy a great conversation with ZZ Ward on the latest edition of The Load Out music podcast.

We had the pleasure of interviewing The O'My's over Zoom video! Soulful Chicago-based alt-R&B act The O'My's persevere through love and loss on new EP No Swimming out now via ADA / Warner Music Group. Each song unpacks the complexity of life's highs and lows through the lens of Maceo Vidal-Haymes and Nick Hennessey's personal experiences living in isolation and learning from one another. Inspired by the arts and music that has shaped them, the duo manifested each track on the project in their newly built studio during the pandemic. With community at the forefront of everything they do, the EP captures the heart and strength of their beloved city like no other. While a nod to the various tokens of their hometown, they're able to provide a comforting universal message for listeners anywhere in the world. The new era of music first came to fruition in 2020. They would then spend the next year creating multiple productions for the song and with each rewrite Vidal-Haymes and Hennessey pushed their boundaries to the next level. Surviving through the pandemic with the power of music, the two challenged themselves with unfiltered artistic expressions that served as a savior. Vidal-Haymes says their new music “incorporates what we have learned as growing producers, writers, and men but at its core it's what has always made The O'My's.” About The O'My's:Channeling their experiences and perspective into soulful music, The O'My's grabs listeners from the very first note. Made up of vocalist-guitarist Maceo Vidal-Haymes and classically trained instrumentalist Nick Hennessey, they have etched themselves into Chicago's music scene through consistency and collaboration. Together they produce a rich tapestry of sound, pulling from a wide range of genres, decades and emotions, and have additionally linked up with a wealth of notable talent including Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, Ab-Soul, Pink Siifu, ZZ Ward, and Carter Lang (Omar Apollo, SZA). Their 2018 full length album Tomorrow was formative to their launch and 2019's EP Above Ground saw the band expanding on the sonics explored in its precursor. Ten years and tens of millions of streams later, The O'My's have honed their one-of-a-kind sound while cultivating an impassioned fanbase and positive praise from media critics. To date, they've secured coverage from the likes of Billboard, Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune, Complex, The FADER, Highsnobiety, Pitchfork, among others, and Rolling Stone dubbed them 'Artist[s] You Need To Know.' twitter.com/ralphieaversa We caught up with friend-of-the-show Marc Scibilia recently on "Ralphie Tonight." His new album, 'Out Of Style,' is set for an October 30 release. Scibilia just dropped the music video for the first single, "How Bad We Need Each Other," featuring Vine star Brandon Bowen. He also made his national TV debut with a performance of the track on The Today Show. Scibilia talked about life on the road; he's been busy supporting James Bay followed by ZZ Ward in addition to traveling to radio stations in promotion for his single. He also revealed the one spot he always hits up in New York City; a place that has a location just blocks from my apartment and yet I have yet to stop in for this famed "Cereal Milk Ice Cream" that Marc speaks of.

Summer is finally here! Pride season is always an exciting time of year to me, but this year I've been feeling an especially strong amount of emotion. I just turned 38 this month, and I think the combination of being firmly in my late-30's now and having just finished riding my 7th AIDS/LifeCycle has got me thinking deeply about a lot of things. I was (as many were) recently moved by the powerful message that the world got from watching HBO's "The Normal Heart." And then again watching HBO's "The Case Against 8" this week, on the eve of the marriage of Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami. I feel tremendous change in my approach towards interpersonal relationships right now as well — with an eye out towards both friendships and romantic love... with changing priorities in my life's work. Maybe it's just Mercury in retrograde, but right now I'm just feeling very deeply. I express a lot of that through music. Music is the motivation that keeps me going. Music is the crutch that supports me through long days. Music is the outlet that allows me to vent and to be creative. So with this podcast, I want to celebrate the beauty that exists in loving each other… in finding love in all of its strange forms and remembering what it means to love one another. "Without music, life would be a mistake." ― Nietzsche My Upcoming DJ Schedule: June 27th: Mischief, Re-bar, Seattle Pride June 28th: Wedding Celebration of Paul Katami & Jeff Zarrillo, Beverly Hills June 29th: Daydream, The Dream Downtown, New York City Pride July 18th: Stripper Circus, Share nightclub, Las Vegas July 25th: Grunt, The Eagle, Silverlake July 26th: Plastic Fantastic, Eleven nightclub, West Hollywood August 3rd: Size Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood August 16th: Plastic Fantastic, Eleven nightclub, West Hollywood October 19th: Size Sundays, Here lounge, West Hollywood October 24th: Halloween event TBA October 25th: Halloween event TBA The Tracklist: "Find You" (acapella), Zedd feat.
