Grab your best purple, immigrant punks! Checkered Past does a shallow dive of the Skadjacent discography of Gypsy Punks, Gogol Bordello! The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had the biggest ska-punk hit of the '90s. Their song "The Impression That I Get" was huge and made them legit stars for a while. But they were a band that earned it. They got their start in the 80s, signed to Taang Records in 1989, got a major label deal in 1993 and released several records before hitting it big with their 1997 record Let's Face It. Not to mention, they were a huge influence on the sound of US ska-punk in the 90s. Today, we talk to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' bassist Joe Gittleman (aka the Bass Fiddleman). He tells us stories from the Bosstones year, working at SideOneDummy in the 2000s, producing Big D and the Table's "Strictly Rude" record, playing in Gang Green and he gives us his side perspective regarding The Bosstones' breakup last year. He also talks about playing Lollapalooza in 1995, quitting drinking, and Bouncing Souls covering his song "Lean On Sheena" from his other band Avoid One Thing, and how the song ended up being one of the Souls most popular songs. We talk about Brian Fallon and Gaslight Anthem's landmark record The 59 Sound, playing Warped Tour and the significance of seeing Fishbone play in the 80s. Plus we talk about Joe's upcoming Wavebreaker release on Bad Time Records with the great Bad Operation. You're going to want to grab a copy ASAP! Support the show

Then, the trio dig in on the final 4 albums of The Suicide Machines from the contentiously recorded Steal This Record to the one-two political punch of the Side One Dummy years to the most post-break up album on Fat Wreck Chords. There's no mistaking the fact that The Gaslight Anthem and their leader Brian Fallon are from New Jersey. The earnest storytelling and vivid imagery in their breakout album The '59 Sound is pure Born/Darkness-era Springsteen. Delusion and Ego in the Art of Comedy Ft. Stand Up Comic Joe Sib. Subscribe to our channel here: http://www.youtube.com/@chatsandtatts Aaron Della Vedova, host of the podcast Chats and Tatts, welcomes local comedian Joe Sib to the show. Joe grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California and had a unique upbringing due to living on a ranch. As a result, he had limited access to what other kids were listening to and he would cruise around with a little blue radio, listening to Abba and the Village People, Elton John, the Eagles, and Carly Simon. After his parents divorced, Joe began visiting his dad in San Jose and discovered a new world of punk music at a skateboard park. He was hooked! The conversation takes us through Joe's career in music and his transition from owning Side One Dummy Records to stand-up comedy and how punk rock influenced the speaker's life. He. also delves into his love for the stage, the challenges he faces even today as a comedian, social media, the 'woke' movement and its impact on comedy, and invites you all to his upcoming headlining show in La Jolla, CA at the Comedy Club. This week's guest is Chris Barker, who you probably know better as "Chris No. 2." The longtime Anti Flag bassist has been an integral member of the iconic and important Pittsburgh punk band since late 1998. Over that span, he's played on some influential albums, performed all over the planet and helped spread activist ethos to generations of listeners throughout the world. With a new album on the way (Lies They Tell Our Children, out Jan. 6!), The General Strike recently being reissued on Side One Dummy and a bunch of shows on the horizon, Chris No. 2 has a lot of modern happenings to discuss. A few days before he headed to The Fest, he spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about those two albums, the band's upcoming Anti-Fest show in Chicago and their tour in Quebec before delving into his personal musical past. Over the course of the conversation, No. 2 talked about finding a drum set in the garbage and starting a "band" called Land in grade school, how seeing Green Day forever changed his musical outlook, his decision to dive headlong into playing both music and ice hockey as a teenager, his tenure in O.B.S., getting an opportunity to join Anti Flag, and some of his most significant artistic experiences from the past quarter century on and off stage. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering, Lakefront Brewery and Music Go Round Greenfield. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Anti Flag featuring Stacey Dee of Bad Cop/Bad Cop ("NVREVER").

Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #17! In this episode, Landon interviews Jamie Coletta - a Los Angeles based expert in all things artist management and public relations. As a former publicity staffer for SideOneDummy Records, their responsibility stemmed to getting some of the last decade's most successful indie alternative-punk releases heard, including those by Jeff Rosenstock, PUP, Chris Farren, AJJ, and many more. However, after the label restructured, they spent very little time getting the ball rolling on the next iteration of their journey. And that next step came in the form of No Earbuds – their own endeavor that combines marketing, artist management, and publicity, putting them all under one roof, as they currently represent artists such as The Wonder Years, Origami Angel, Foxing, Bartees Strange, and John-Allison Weiss. You can learn more about their work at noearbuds.com.Landon and Jamie talk about growing up in Rhode Island, the TRL pipeline, getting their start in punk, going independent, marriage, and parenthood, along with some of their favorite movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:16 Interview w/ Jamie Coletta00:38:23 Round Robin Movie Discussion

Guest Bio:“Montana isn't just where I live,” says Satsang's Drew McManus. “It's my heart, my soul. Along with my family, it's my everything.”It's little wonder, then, that the state played such a pivotal role in inspiring ‘All Right Now,' Satsang's extraordinary new album and debut release for venerated indie label Side One Dummy. Written and recorded during an extended hiatus from the road, the record finds McManus reconnecting with his western roots and exploring a whole new palette of sounds and textures, drawing on classic country and modern Americana to forge a joyful, rustic collection all about letting go and living in the moment. McManus produced the album himself, and while the songs here are certainly honest and deeply personal, they're written in a spiritual language that taps into something far more universal, something inherent in the human condition that binds us as brothers and sisters on a shared journey to find ourselves and our place in this world. The performances and arrangements are broad and spacious to match, reflecting the wide-open fields and soaring mountains that surrounded the band during the whirlwind recording process, and the result is a lush, organic collection fueled by acoustic guitars, fiddle, and pedal steel, a warm, inviting record that hints at everything from Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks to Gregory Alan Isakov and The Head and the Heart as it meditates on the power—and the pull—of home.“I've been on the road for the last five or six years straight,” says McManus, “so being back in Montana for a whole year was a big change. Having that kind of uninterrupted time at home helped me fall back in love with songwriting in a whole new way.”Though McManus was born in Montana, he actually spent much of his formative years in Des Moines, IA. His childhood was troubled, to say the least, marked by physical abuse at home and a nose for trouble that surrounded him. Music offered an escape, though, and McManus found solace in the punk rock and hip-hop he discovered through his love of skateboarding. Brash and aggressive, the songs were a far cry from the country tunes his mother played on endless loop around the house.“She loved the old stuff like Buck Rogers and Hank Williams,” McManus recalls, “but she was really into that mid-to-late-nineties sound, guys like Garth Brooks and Randy Travis and Travis Tritt. I didn't get it at the time, but she always used to tell me, ‘Someday, when you're older, you'll come back to this music.'”Desperate to escape his surroundings and convinced that he'd wind up in jail like his brother if he stayed, McManus left home as a teenager and moved in with his older sister in Chicago. His first few years there played out like one long party, but as time wore on, it became apparent that the party was spiraling out of control. “It was clear to everyone else around me that I was an alcoholic and a drug addict,” McManus explains. “Eventually, my friends just sat me down and said, ‘We think you're going to die if you keep this up.'”So McManus packed his bags and headed back to Montana, where his biological father worked at a rehab clinic. The road to recovery was a long and arduous one, but McManus eventually got clean and sober, fell in love, and married the woman of his dreams. For the first time in a long time, life was good, and yet it still felt like something was missing, like some fundamental building block of his personality was being neglected. It wasn't until McManus found himself on a backpacking trek in the Himalayas that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. “I realized on that trip that you only get one shot at life,” says McManus, “and if you've got a chance to utilize your talents and follow your dreams, then you've got to go for it. It gave me this renewed sense of purpose, and within a week of getting back home, I started playing shows and launched the band.”McManus filled notebook after notebook on that Himalayan journey, and the material would eventually go on to form the basis of Satsang's breakout 2016 debut, ‘The Story of You.' Steeped in reggae, hip-hop, and world music, the album was an uplifting affirmation that connected with fans around the world, racking up roughly 15 millions streams on Spotify alone. McManus and his bandmates returned a year later with their similarly successful sophomore effort, ‘Pyramid(s),' which hit #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart and #2 on iTunes, and pushed their sound even further with 2019's ‘Kulture,' which incorporated a wider swath of influences from Motown to Tom Petty. Relentless road warriors, the group built a devoted following one night at a time, sharing stages with the likes of Michael Franti & Spearhead and Nahko and Medicine for the People as they worked their way up from bars and clubs to massive festivals.

Over the course of the band's 25-year run, Big D and the Kids Table has released nine studio albums, traveled the globe and earned a place as one of the planet's premier ska-punk projects. As Big D's lead singer, one of its founders and its last remaining original member, David McWane has seen it all. In advance of the band's forthcoming record, Do Your Art (available for pre-order on Side One Dummy, out Oct. 22), McWane talked about the new album and all that came before it. During the extensive conversation, McWane discussed some of Big D and the Kids Table's most significant moments, including numerous international tours and countless shows with some especially notable bands, and some of his early projects. Along the way, McWane talked about his years as drummer in bands like Twisted Reality and Spu, the start of Big D, his unlikely path to becoming a vocalist, and the importance of continuing to make art in a culture that seems to no longer value creation. Lauren Denitzio is the driving force behind the band Worriers. They began the band after having been in another band called The Measure, and have now released 3 full-length albums along with a few EPs, most recently a 5-song album of cover songs featuring their take on Rancid, Tom Petty, The New Pornographers and more. Now in their 10th year of existence, Worriers has established themselves as a true standout in the current punk scene, and have been able to partner with labels like No Idea, 6131, Don Giovanni, Side One Dummy along with self-releasing material. On top of this, they have worked with some really fantastic producers including Laura Jane Grace and John Agnello. The band is essentially Lauren's project, and is currently backed by Nick Psillas on bass and Mikey Erg on drums and Frank Piegaro (formerly of the band Ensign) on guitar. As Lauren describes in the episode, having a certain fluidity in the make up of the band has allowed them to take on more opportunities and not be as restricted by what sometimes conventional band structures might otherwise hinder. Currently living in Los Angeles, Lauren has roots in the East Coast having grown up in New Jersey and living in Brooklyn for many years after attending college. Besides performing full time in Worriers, They have an established career in illustration and design, which we talk about during the episode. Kill Your Idols was an American hardcore punk band from New York, active from 1995 through 2007 and were signed to SideOneDummy Records. The band released many 7" EPs, splits with other bands (including Full Speed Ahead, Fisticuffs, Voorhees, Good Riddance, and Poison Idea), compilation tracks, and full-length LPs in their 11-year run. Most of their records were released on vinyl as well as compact disc. They cite Poison Idea, Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, Warzone, Sick of It All, and 7 Seconds as some of their influences. KYI was very fast and had a loud, dirty, dual guitar sound with shouted vocals. They employed hints of melody in their song structure. Although they derived many of their influences from California and D.C. style hardcore, they were considered a New York hardcore band. I got Andy West on the Skype and this is what we chat about: Starting off as a Dead Head Was he a songwriter prior to starting the band Who started getting their tattoos What does he think about playing Long Island Playing every small town that they could Dealing with depression Always writing a ton of songs What are his thoughts on their new songs Their last show when they broke up The Webster Hall show And a ton more If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. We had the pleasure of interviewing Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music from the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA! ** This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic ** With his emotional and gravel-coated bellow, vocalist/guitarist Chuck Ragan made a name for himself as one-fourth of the much-loved Gainesville post-hardcore outfit Hot Water Music before releasing his first solo album in 2007. Alongside friends Chris Wollard, Jason Black, and George Rebelo, Ragan formed Hot Water Music in the early '90s. Through a slew of well-received albums for labels like No Idea, Doghouse, and Epitaph -- and an incessant grassroots touring regime -- the passionate crew turned itself into a highly respected and influential act on the underground scene. Outside of his main gig, Ragan also recorded two side albums with some friends, including the stripped-down rock of Rumbleseat and the punk-oriented Cro(w)s. In the spring of 2005, Hot Water Music went on an indefinite hiatus, largely spurred by Ragan's desire to spend time outside of the band with his growing family. The group's other members went on playing music together (soon forming the Draft), while Ragan concentrated on his home life and, eventually, writing some acoustic-based material. Hot Water Music officially closed up shop in May 2006, and Ragan began playing various shows solo, logging time by the year's end alongside acts like Dustin Kensrue, Flogging Molly, the Lawrence Arms, Rob Huddleston, and Tim Barry. Ragan (who was a carpenter by day) signed with California indie SideOneDummy Records in early 2007 for the May release of his intimate debut, Los Feliz. Recorded live on February 19, 2007 at Tangiers in Los Feliz, California, the album features Ragan armed with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, and occasionally joined on-stage by Ted Hutt and Jon Gaunt. Ragan also set up a "singles club" with his buddies at No Idea, sending subscribers a new 7" (six total) every month or so from September 2006 to June 2007. In 2008 Ragan launched the Revival Tour, a long-running, internationally acclaimed acoustic collaboration that's featured a revolving door of talented musicians from the alt-country, bluegrass, and punk scenes over the years. He released his second solo outing, Gold Country, the following year and the Christopher Thorn-produced Covering Ground in 2011, and reunited with Hot Water Music in 2012 for the album Exister. Till Midnight, his fourth solo long-player, followed in early 2014. A year later he and songwriter Rocky Voltolato released a split EP entitled Kindred Spirit on Side One Dummy. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi We want to hear from you! Joe Sib wears a lot of hats, he's the former lead singer of the punk rock band WAX, he's the co-founder of the record label, SideOneDummy, and he's also been working on his stand-up comedy career for the last decade or so. Sib just released his debut album, "Nowhere Near The Top" on 800 LB Gorilla records and he sits down with Matt to talk about the trip to get to that first album, how his comedy has evolved, and he even tosses in a few good stories about a The Ramones, Bad Religion, and a semi-feud he had with the band Weezer, one that Weezer was unaware they were in. I'm very excited to welcome comedian Joe Sib to the show. I've been a fan of his work for a long time, in the sense that he is responsible for introducing me to a lot of my favorite music through his label SideOneDummy. In turn, I was quite surprised to find out that he is also an incredible stand-up comedian. We talk about youth, naivety, and how Joe incorporated his love of punk rock into a career both on-stage and off. And he explains how all of this led to him performing stand-up comedy all over the country and releasing his debut comedy album, Nowhere Near the Top.Nowhere Near the Top is available now! In this episode we are joined by our friend Jordan Hudkins of Rozwell Kid to talk about their upcoming record "Precious Art," on SideOne Dummy Records.
Joe Sib runs a record label, does stand-up comedy, plays music, raises children and in his spare time breathes. He's the co-founder of Side One Dummy Records and via the skate parks in California discovered a world of music, creation and scene cultivation. Ron and Joe talk about skateboarding, meeting Ian MacKaye and Henry Rollins, the early days of Epitaph and Side One Dummy, Bad Religion, and then move on to the present: Joe's comedy career and fatherhood. Dudes geeking out about music, what what! Also in this episode: Angie Dorin rocks Monkey Minute and Ron riffs on Slayer posting a Trump photo.

I learned a lot from Jeff and was happy to be corrected, challenged and most of all laughed a lot. Jeff’s a beautiful person and wrote one of my favorite albums of the year. Episode 206 - Meet your new friend Astronautalis! He’s a hip hop artist from Minneapolis that has a rich history within independent music as you will hear from the show. We talk about his first tour ever, The Vans Warped Tour (which is insane), freestyle rap being a parlor trick and rave culture in the 90’s. It’s a bit of a different discussion than the show typically has, but a very engaging and interesting one. Check out his new LP on Side One Dummy called Cut The Body Loose as it is really, REALLY good. Enjoy! Use our Amazon Affiliate Code to support the show! Small Planet Radio's Andrew Kolbenschlag (vocals, guitar, and keys) joins Brian and Bill as our first guest in a month (!) to talk about New Jersey natives The Gaslight Anthem and their album The '59 Sound (2008, Side One Dummy). On their sophomore effort, the band matured into the Springsteen-by-way-of-punk-rock sound that had made them stand out on their previous release. Drawing on punk rock energy, classic guitar tones, and bittersweet anthems about youth, the band found a voice that they could call their own. Bill, Brian, and Andrew discuss how they got into the music, the band's image and how curated it might be, listening to punk as you get older, appealing to a Rock'n'Roll audience (note the capital Rs), Ted Hutt's transparent production, Brian trying to get to second base at Corey Beach on Long Island, what makes this album great, and as always a track by track review!
I've waxed lyrical on my love and history with hip hop a couple of times recently, so there's no need to go through it all again.Andy Hepburn, known as Astronautalis, has been one of my favourite rappers since I heard him on the P.O.S. album ‘Never Better'. His style, delivery and the literary intelligence of his lyrics appeals to the writer in me in ways that a lot of rappers really can't match.Upon landing this interview I did a whole bunch of research and found out that he's related to the 4th Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, Better known as Mary, Queen of Scots' third husband. I won't bore you with the details of the history and why that's so interesting to me (it's covered in the podcast) but suffice to say, the Scottish history geek in me was happy to have a chat about all of that with Andy. He's probably one of the coolest, most laid back people I've spoken to so far and this chat is one of the easiest I can remember. Honestly, if you don't love him already I guarantee that you will after this episode.Highlights include:Being in a Yahoo Newsgroup about James HepburnGetting teary eyed about ScotlandSome history about Mary, Queen of Scots, James Bothwell and the oldest house in GlasgowWhy he started to look into his heritageMaking the conscious choice to write lyrics based on historical fictionComing from a line of storytellers and seeing himself as an oral storytellerIt was kind of like making a reading listIt was rappers who were storytellers that drew him towards hip hop – Lord Finesse, Big L, Slick Rick and Ghostface and underground New York hip hopBattling is not art, it's sport. It's not about creativity; it's about making fun of someone. It's also about being precise at a thing and really good at a thing. It's a weapon. But Andy was going to theatre school – battling and studying performance weren't gelling for himIt took a while to let the art knowledge and theatre training to bleed into his musicTheatre informs his performance – he is playing an elevated version of himselfSeeing the live show and the album as two different things – shows should be parties, albums are made to be absorbedBoth punk and hip hop have a need to throw a party, even if the music isn't about the partyYet there's also an angry energy which drives the musicMoving to Minneapolis because of the hip hop sceneBeing a rapper for 20 yearsThe way he's incorporated many different literary techniques into his lyricsHow Shakespeare opened his eyes to the sheer complexity of writingAnd the way Shakespeare essentially gave him a new appreciation for artBecoming a better songwriter as time goes on and taking the influence of pop rap to make things more elegantThe lyrics and the music need to combine together to do the jobWhat the vibe of the new album is aboutUsing different vocal styles and developing a new language for each albumMaking music more simple than ever beforeAnd being very proud of his new albumI'm continually blown away by the generosity of the people I've interviewed – they really don't have to give any time at all to some idiot with a microphone but I'm so glad that they do. Andy was an excellent guest and given his storytelling background, you can quite clearly see the raconteur at work in this interview.I hope you enjoy it. It's one of my favourites.Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Astronautalis - The Wondersmith and his SonsAstronautalis - Sike!I make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.LinksGo follow Astronautalis on Twitter and like him on facebook.
