Send us a textThe Court of Lorenzo de' Medici Part 3: Large-Scale Mythological Painting The 1480's in Florence was an age of relative prosperity under Lorenzo the Magnificent. During this period, the visual arts began to take a new shape. Influenced by both classical and contemporary literature and poetry, Lorenzo's court saw the introduction to large-scale mythological painting, ushered in by the famed Sandro Botticelli. This episode looks closely at the formation of Botticelli's Birth of Venus, as well as the subsequent Court of Pan by Luca Signorelli in 1490. We discuss the cultural and political circumstances around the development of this new genre of painting, as well as a host of patrons, including the Vespucci family and Lorenzo il Popolano de' Medici. A close look at these works alongside scholarly research reveals a tension between representation and actual cultural attitudes, especially around differentiating between philosophical representation and lived, sensual realities.

The story of 62-year-old Fiona Torbett who disappeared in the Highlands on July 7, 1993. Fiona was a seasoned 'hill bagger' having spent many years hiking and documenting walks in the Scottish Highlands, particularly in the collection of hills known as the "five sisters". But after one such hike, she failed to return to her boarding house. What was initially assumed to be a tragic but simple hiking accident came to be viewed with suspicion, when it seemed that the boarding house manager's son may be hiding something. His many explanations ended up revealing a horrifying truth that shook the small local community. From Podimo and Vespucci — this is The Darkness Vaults, released weekly on Wednesday.
In 1931, train workers detect a foul stench coming from a suitcase left at a Los Angeles train station. Initially, police think that the case contains illegally-smuggled meat, but when they open the suitcase, they discover a badly abused corpse. The story behind the macabre find centers on three women who lived together in a small apartment in Phoenix. What started as a strong friendship between them was put to the test when a 44-year-old man began to frequent their apartment - and started relationships with all three of them. The jealousy that ensued was a powerful force, that drove one woman to commit a heinous crime. From Podimo and Vespucci — this is The Darkness Vaults, released weekly on Wednesday.
