HOCHUL TO FIGHT FOR CONGESTION PRICING (if you live in New York state): +1 (518) 474-8390 or https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form SAMPLE SCRIPT: I'm a New York state resident and I am reaching out to urge Gov. Hochul to continue supporting New York City's Congestion Pricing plan and fight against the federal government's insane attempts to shut it down. This policy has already decreased traffic congestion, reduced travel times for people of all income brackets traveling into the city, increased business-friendly foot traffic in the city, and raised much needed revenues to improve our public transportation system. We cannot allow the federal government to bully our state into reversing a popular and effective policy, and I ask that you continue doing everything in your power to make sure the policy remains in effect. Do people drive less because they live in buildings that don't provide parking, or do they live in buildings that don't provide parking because they drive less? That question has huge implications for how we build and rebuild our cities, yet researchers have struggled for decades to answer it conclusively. UCLA professor Adam Millard-Ball joins us to discuss new research that finally — we hope — puts the question to bed. Taking advantage of San Francisco's affordable housing lottery, Millard-Ball and colleagues find that (as-good-as-)randomly assigning tenants to different buildings and neighborhoods has substantial impacts on their transportation choices, with lower parking ratios resulting in less driving and more transit use. We talk about what this means for housing and parking policy, and what it says about the behavioral shifts needed to make cities more affordable, accessible, and sustainable.Show notes:Millard-Ball, A., West, J., Rezaei, N., & Desai, G. Cities have lived with exclusionary zoning for decades, if not generations. Is inclusionary zoning the answer? Inclusionary zoning, or IZ, requires developers to set aside a share of units in new buildings for low- or moderate-income households, seeking to increase the supply of affordable homes and integrate neighborhoods racially and socioeconomically. But how well does it accomplish these goals? This week we're joined by the Mercatus Center's Dr. Emily Hamilton to discuss her research on how IZ programs have impacted homebuilding and housing prices in the Washington, D.C. region, and the ironic reality that the success of inclusionary zoning relies on the continued existence of exclusionary zoning. Also, Shane and Mike rant about nexus studies. Originally aired in 2022.Show notes:Hamilton, E. (2021). Inclusionary zoning and housing market outcomes. I've seen a lot of posts online where tradespeople actively discourage youth from getting in to the trades. They are hard, they will ruin you, there's no money in them, etc. Why anyone would do something they hate so much is beyond me. I believe we all have a choice and can find things we love to do and enjoy them greatly. In fact, I've reinvented myself a few times. From film major and reality show camera operator, to flooring installer and boutique showroom owner, to now a guy that challenges the status quo of an industry that changed his life.Matt Wentland is no different. Going to college and acquiring an elementary education degree, he quickly learned that corporate rules and roles were not his bag. He challenged himself to find other ways to make money doing things that fit his personality which aligned more with being very outgoing and creative. While never conventional such as vacuum salesman, brand icon, emcee, and “booth babe”, there has very often been a side of contractor sprinkled in as well. All of those paths allowed him to use his voice, his energy, and creative spirit to influence, educated and entertain his clients.Listen in this week on the Floor Academy Podcast, as we hear form Matt on how he has made his chosen path fit him more than chasing a paycheck or settling for second best. Go Boards very own “booth babe” talks about his experience building a life full of passion and how he has been able to use his joys to make a living while also finding ways to partner with clients to advance himself as well.Check out our sponsorsJohns ManvilleThe International Surfaces EventIQ Power ToolsCheck out our website and storeSupport the show

Hoover scholars explore the latest books that delve into some of the most vexing policy issues facing the United States and the world. Find out what makes these authors tick and how they think we should approach our most difficult challenges.  In our latest installment, watch a discussion between Josiah Ober and Brook Manville, authors of The Civic Bargain: How Democracy Survives.   ABOUT THE BOOK Is democracy in trouble, perhaps even dying? Pundits say so, and polls show that most Americans believe that their country's system of governance is being “tested” or is “under attack.” But is the future of democracy necessarily so dire? In The Civic Bargain, Brook Manville and Josiah Ober push back against the prevailing pessimism about the fate of democracy around the world. Instead of an epitaph for democracy, they offer a guide for democratic renewal, calling on citizens to recommit to a “civic bargain” with one another to guarantee civic rights of freedom, equality, and dignity. That bargain also requires them to fulfill the duties of democratic citizenship: governing themselves with no “boss” except one another, embracing compromise, treating each other as civic friends, and investing in civic education for each rising generation. Manville and Ober trace the long progression toward self-government through four key moments in democracy's history: Classical Athens, Republican Rome, Great Britain's constitutional monarchy, and America's founding. Comparing what worked and what failed in each case, they draw out lessons for how modern democracies can survive and thrive. Manville and Ober show that democracy isn't about getting everything we want; it's about agreeing on a shared framework for pursuing our often conflicting aims. Crucially, citizens need to be able to compromise, and must not treat one another as political enemies. And we must accept imperfection; democracy is never finished but evolves and renews itself continually. As long as the civic bargain is maintained—through deliberation, bargaining, and compromise—democracy will live. Tuesday, September 19, 2023 | 10:00 am PT / 1:00pm ET
