Scowl is one of a handful of new hardcore bands blowing up at the moment. And, more importantly, they are a band with ska roots. Specifically, their bassist Bailey Lupo, who used to play bass in San Jose ska-punk band The Caps (or CAPS). So, we brought them on to get all the deets on their ska past. Bailey told us about packing records at Asian Man Records as a teen. (They begged Mike Park to release the Scowl record in 2020, but he passed). Bailey talked about recently meeting JER in Gainsville and vowed to our audience that, one day, Scowl would collaborate with Skatune Network. And they talked about the bands that influenced The Caps: The Specials, Choking Victim and a whole slew of surf bands. But we got even deeper and talked about the late 2000s/early 2010s San Jose punk scene they came from and talked about legendary groups like Leer, Hard Girls (featuring Jeff Rosenstock's guitarist Mike Huguenor), Monstrauss (Who played ska & grunge ie Skunge), Matsuri, Stickup Kid and Point of View. And of course, we had to talk about San Jose's weirdest punk venue, Nickel City. Hyper Ska artist Eichlers wrote a song about the venue on their sophomore record. We also talk about touring with Limp Bizkit, what it was like to have thousands of kids show up to their Real Bay Shit shows, seeing Laura Stevenson at a backyard BBQ in San Jose, and we discuss the horrible Punknews comments they sifted through every day. Most importantly, we talked about Adam and Aaron's old band, Gnarboots! Support the show
Laura Stevenson is my guest on this week's That's How I Remember It. Laura is a wildly talented songwriter and singer. I've been lucky enough to do a few tours with her. This year, she's celebrating the 10 year anniversary of her album Wheel, and will be touring this spring. We talked about the making of that record and who she was at that time, but also: her memory of physical spaces, regretting excessive overdubs, Basia, Love is Blind and much more. Big thanks to Laura for joining me. Tons of great stuff coming up, please listen and subscribe.
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. Today we're talking with Shawn Alpay of Completions. He's played with Father John Misty, Laura Stevenson, Whitney and more. We talked about Stereolab's fifth album "Dots and Loops" and about how to serve the song and learning how not to overplay. Completions released their debut album, "I Needed Help" on September 23rd. DIY punk mainstays Jeff Rosenstock & Laura Stevenson are good friends and great collaborators. They've released their second EP of Neil Young covers this year titled, Younger Still. Features Contributor Matty G was able to catch up with the dashing duo to talk about their work together, their favorite Neil Young songs, and what they love most about Chicago. Jeff & Laura will be playing Lincoln Hall in Chicago this Friday, December 9th, 2022. Younger Still is out on Polyvinyl Recordings. "We're friends and we encourage each other and that hasn't really changed... I think that makes for a good collaborative process. And yeah, I guess we have gotten better at music. But also maybe our ideas aren't as cool anymore because we're older." - Jeff Rosenstock Produced by Adalyn Staats. Image Credit: Dan Ozzi.

Mutilation Barbecue/Maul/Bud Rot/Meth Stain DIY gig in a convent. World Of Pleasure. We're joined by Dave from the legendary Chicago Punk band Two Houses to throw a brick through the Overton Window to discuss the legendary “Real Emo” band Sunny Day Real Estate. Sunny Day are a necessary part of any conversation about the Emo genre. Their debut record Diary (1994) is arguably THE time capsule Emo record; completely essential for anyone looking to explore the genre. What's great about SDRE, though, is that their entire discography is diverse, interesting, and – most importantly – very good. We go around the horn and air our respective hot takes on this storied catalog of records, with an emphasis on selling our ideas to each other, and to you. In the late '90s, a new ska-punk scene was bubbling up in the UK that would last until the mid-2000s. This scene would be defined by groups like Capdown, Sonic Boom Six, Adequate Seven, Five Knuckle and the record label Household Name Records. One of the earliest groups to form in this scene was a band from Derby called Lightyear--and they were the craziest groups from this scene. Defined by copious on (and off) stage nudity, Morris dancing, pantomime horses and never-ending pranks and shenanigans, Lightyear took cathartic songs ska-punk songs about depression, drug addiction and domestic abuse and created a wild stage production that always left the audience confused and elated. On today's episode, we speak with Lightyear's lead singer (and lead instigator) Chas Palmer-Williams. He tells us how getting bullied as a child led to him getting naked as often as possible. He gives us the low-down on a popular hobby, "puppetry of the penis," and he waxes nostalgic about his days at the Victoria Inn. Chas also lists about the US bands that Lightyear tormented (Mustard Plug, Link 80, Slow Gherkin, and Laura Stevenson to name a few), he talks about the Household Records documentary he started (And the problems he's faced), we learn about his new business Hawkr, and most importantly, he tells us the full Ice-T story, one that involves a pantomime horse crashing Body Count's set at Reading Festival where "Ice-T was not amused." dear livejournal, do you know about your sitz bone? it’s the butt bone that you sit on. when you sit on a chair, your squishy butt fat disperses your weight across a larger surface and you don’t feel that much pressure directly on your sitz bone. but i got a new bicycle seat recently. it’s nose-less and designed to remove pressure from soft tissue, and instead puts all the pressure on your sitz bone. i’ve only spent two days on the seat and i’m already feeling it in my sitz. but it’s a good thing. i’ve spent the last fifteen years not riding a bicycle because of painful hemorrhoids. is this t.m.i.? naw. hemorrhoids have been a pain in my butt long enough. it’s time to take my life back. and my butt back lolol.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Bedwetters Anonymous “Poverty Porn” R.U. dear livejournal, have you ever played music with other people?! silly question - i know a lot of you have. i haven’t done very much of it. but i’ve been doing it and it’s super fun. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME ? i mean, indiana and rebs and i did a couple rock shows years ago. and i did a couple band lottery bands. and those were fun. but they didn’t last that long for whatever reason. rebs/kriz/mai/jenna and i did a couple rock band practices right before the pandemic started, so we don’t really know where that could have gone. but i like what i’m doing right now and we’re going to play a show this sunday and i’m super excited about it. i hope we all have a nice time.i think we will.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Display Homes “Able To” E.T.APainter “i am perfectly safe” Important BodiesTOY “2” Live At Curry NightLaura Stevenson “Maker Of Things” The Mystic & the MasterMope City “Excuses Start To Thaw” News From HomeBAUS “Pop Song” Songs To Snake ToWLMRT “Stretching” WLMRT ForeverChurch fire “sunday” summer camp doom diaryBen Varian “Knife of Snow” Rey’s Fireside Christmastime Sing-AlongFrog “God Once Loved a Woman” Whatever We Probably Already Had ItEmma Parry “Brittle Brine” E.P.Nonnie Parry “Human” 7 Veils of FantasyR. Episode 50! (Yes, you read that correctly.) This week, Mark and Brendan feature the usual blend of melody, rhythm, and weirdness that you have come to expect. We start with a indie track from Laura Stevenson, from her new self-titled album. Next, to London for a solo single from Anna Prior, the drummer for the English pop band Metronomy. Next, a crunchy new tune from Hollywood super-composer Danny Elfman that pairs him up with Trent Reznor, on Nine Inch Nails fame. The final new track of the week is from New Zealand, and the artist Reb Fountain. Then, Brendan digs up some math rock from a decade ago with a wonderful tune from Battles, with vocals from the DJ and producer Matias Aguayo. You can find six more bonus reviews in our email newsletter. If that is something you don't know about, read on. If you are new, please take a second to sign up for our email newsletter, right here. We won't share your info, we promise. This pod is the product of just Mark and Brendan, and we hate that stuff, so we will never do that with your info.
When it comes time to record, Laura Stevenson is honest to a fault. 2019's The Big Freeze may well have been her most personal record to date, but the album has nothing on her recently released self-titled followup. Plenty had happened in the intervening years — some things she's happier to speak about than others. Stevenson is clearly protective of the people around her, but when it comes to her own life, she's much more of an open book. Born just as the pandemic was beginning to shut down businesses in the States, her daughter wakes up from an afternoon nap about halfway into our conversation. The difficult timing was, perhaps, fortuitous, stuck at home with a young child at a time when touring was an impossibility. With a new album in the world, touring is a possibility once again, but Stevenson is more than happy to take things one day at a time.
Laura Stevenson (new album Laura Stevenson out now) competes to cheer Josh up. During a game of Cribs Notes, Laura takes Josh on an MTV Cribs style tour of her home. She then donates her winnings to Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Plus, pep talks for people who had to sell their cars after Xzibit "improved" them, and people with messy refrigerators. NFL players can't all be amazing! Yet that's often what we hear. Today, we'll nominate a list of players whose on-field performances don't align with their reputations. They may be legit pro players, and they certainly deserve to be on the field, but they're just not guaranteed the kinds of workloads you're told they're in line for. We'll also discuss our tactics for auction fantasy football drafts and play a great song! Guest: Brandon Funston of The Athletic with music from Laura Stevenson. Laura Stevenson's sixth album, self-titled, is out this month. It's candid, confessional and frankly, a contender for Best Album of 2021. We discuss the making of it, and Laura's life lately.
Singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson documents the turbulent and heavy stuff of life with warmth and fierce intensity. The multi-instrumentalist offers an album, “written as a sort of purge and a prayer,” of dynamic contrasts, clasping hands with blistering rage and working out how to deal with fear and pain. Laura Stevenson plays tunes remotely with her band from her self-titled 2021 record. Set list: “State,” “Don't Think About Me,” “Sky Blue, Bad News” Watch "State":
On an all new Hard Times Podcast, Laura Stevenson stops by to talk about childbirth during COVID, getting grandma's into GG Allin and her new self titled record which comes out tomorrow! Listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts!
Singer/songwriter Laura Stevenson spoke to me about a cultural spark that is really remarkable. I don't think that any other topic that I've discussed on this show has affected me as much as this one. Laura's spark is Pasa Un Angel, a mixed media monotype fresco by fine artist and activist Claudia Bernardi, but we talked about Bernardi's entire body of work. She has lived an absolutely incredible life and survived through and witnessed unimaginable trauma. This conversation is going to be a source of inspiration for you, but it also features discussion of some incredibly upsetting and horrifying human rights abuses that are the driving force behind Bernardi's work. It's a moving and, for me, truly life changing discussion. You'll finish this episode wanting to know much more about Claudia Bernardi's work and you'll also be really excited to listen to Laura's music. Laura's fantastic self-titled album will be released on August 6th. Links:Pasa Un AngelLaura Stevenson24 Hours

This week's episode is with the one and only Laure Stevenson! Laura discusses with us the journey of being a mom and a musician, her and her husband meeting at a rock and roll summer camp, her journey into the underground tunnels of Disney, and the fun she had shooting her recent music video for ‘State.' We dive into Laura's themes in her music, and her hopefulness that being honest and vulnerable in her music will convey to others that they are not alone. As a musician during COVID-19, she discusses her excitement returning to live music, her songwriting process, and her opportunities working with other musicians and artists, having her chance to express herself on her friends' records. As broadcast June 10, 2021 with extra fabric for the podcast fitting room. On the 17th anniversary of Ray Charles' transformation, we pay tribute to start the show, noting the incredible work of a man who didn't just revolutionize a couple of genres, but all of them. For the rest of our funk & soul first hour, there's new tunes out from Polo & Pan, Robert Glasper, and Otis Kane just to name a few, and we dusted a few old school joints in there as well for good measure while also sending some positive energy towards the victims of a horrific accident that happened in Gwangju yesterday. Dan Lloyd joins us for the 2nd hour on our AMPED feature, and with big albums out tomorrow from Garbage, Sleater-Kinney, and a host of others in the rock world, there is a ton to explore there as well.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Ray Charles – I've Got News For YouPolo & Pan feat Channel Tres – TunnelLucky Daye – Running BlindOtis Kane feat KALLITECHNIS – Good LoveDeRobert & The Half Truths – Walk ForwardBacao Rhythm & Steel Band – I Need Somebody to Love Tonight Part II (31:55)Donald Byrd – Christo RedentorRobert Glasper feat Alex Isley – Main ThemeDorothy Ashby – Come Live with MeMaston feat L'éclair – SouvenirOliver Nelson – Skull SessionDonald Byrd – Woman of the World Part III (60:40)AFI – Far Too NearGarbage – No Gods No MastersJim Ward – Paper FishSleater-Kinney – High in the GrassMammoth WVH – Mammoth Part IV (90:43)Descendents – NightageTom Morello and the Bloody Beetroots – Radium GirlsVolbeat – Wait a Minute My GirlLaura Stevenson – StateNoel Gallagher's High Flying Birds – Flying on the GroundJoey Cape – It Could Be Real

Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the best email newsletter about music in the entire world which is also sometimes a podcast—the best podcast in the entire world. Today it’s a podcast.Sometimes I will spend a few hours preparing for an interview so that I will pass as someone who at least wields some vague sense of what the fuck they’re talking about. Sometimes, if I’m being honest, I will be cramming my prep in at the very last minute. But talking to today’s guest is something I feel like I’ve been preparing for my entire life. Kevin Devine played in the first band (or at least among the first bands) I ever saw perform way back in… 1997? Like me, Kevin grew up on Staten Island, New York, and cut his teeth playing at local spots there, particularly a DIY hall called The Joint, which hosted all-ages shows every Friday night. Kevin and I talked a lot about growing up with that background and how the blue-collar punk scene on Staten Island was drastically different than the more respected one happening just a ferry ride away in Manhattan. We both agreed that it instilled in us a small-town mentality that still informs how we operate within the music industry today. Will this incredibly niche subject be interesting to anyone who grew up outside the tri-state area? I don’t know! Not my business! We talked about a few non-Shaolin topics as well—the path his career has taken since his Miracle of 86 days (and his Delusion days, if we want to go really far back), as well as Nirvana and tips for cutting your own hair during the paindemic.Kevin has a new EP out called No One’s Waiting Up For Me Tonight in which he delivers more of the familiar, comforting sounds I’ve enjoyed from him over the last 20+ years. I guess we should have talked about that but we didn’t. Again, not my problem!!Oh, and we mentioned a 1998 show at which Kevin’s band played an outdoor skate demo. I will embarrass him by including that video below. Listen to the episode to hear the story behind his incredibly baggy pants! (The story is that baggy pants were cool as heck back then. Really not much of a story now that I think about it.)(The above photo was taken by Erik Tanner.)Also, a housekeeping note for dedicated REPLT ALTers: If you ordered a zine, the last batch of them shipped out on Friday morning. Hopefully they will arrive to you safely.Check out previous REPLY ALT episodes with Laura Stevenson, Jonah Ray, Sarah Tudzin [Illuminati Hotties], David Anthony, Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs. They’re all on Spotify and Apple for your listening displeasure.Follow me on all the internet stuff.Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Hello and welcome to another edition of REPLY ALT, the only newsletter about music ever to exist. Thanks to everyone who bought a copy of the zine I put on sale last week. They sold out way, wayyyy faster than I’d expected, so apologies if you didn’t get one but my insecurity rendered me incapable of printing literally a single copy more than I did. Today’s newsletter is once again a podcast. Please see previous episodes with Jonah Ray, Sarah Tudzin [Illuminati Hotties], David Anthony, Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs. They’re all on Spotify and Apple for your listening pleasure.Today’s guest is the one of the most talented songwriters currently walking the earth, Laura Stevenson. We talked a bit about settling into motherhood, songwriting, shitty haircuts, and growing up on Long Island. We also spitballed the premise for an Encino Man sequel entitled Ensequel Man (Hollywood producers, get at us! We can literally have a draft done by this afternoon!). Since it’s getting an expanded reissue this year, we also did a little reminiscing about her 2011 album Sit Resist, which I once listed as one of my ten favorite albums of the last decade.Laura writes such beautifully intricate music, but I do worry that it gets lost that she is also equally hilarious. I remember seeing her in Baltimore years ago and the crowd was pin-drop silent as she performed one of her many intensely vulnerable songs about the imperfections of the human condition. Then, after she finished and everyone applauded, she said, “Thank you, that was an ICP song.” So I hope her humor comes through here!OK stop reading and start listening!Oh, and also, I always usually like to use my own photos for REPLY ALT but since I couldn’t find any of Laura and me that were not thoroughly embarrassing and unfit for internet consumption, she sent me the above photo, as taken by Em Dubin.Oh, and also also, I routinely give Laura’s NPR Tiny Desk concert a rewatch. So intimate and so lovely. And while pregnant! If you haven’t seen…Listen to Laura Stevenson.Follow me on all the internet stuff.Twitter | Instagram | Website Get full access to REPLY ALT at danozzi.substack.com/subscribe

Singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson and her husband Mike Campbell, touring bassist and talent buyer/manager for Woodstock NY's Colony venue, welcomed their daughter just as COVID-19 began to spread across the US. They talk to MK about what that's been like - spoiler, it's been hard.
In this episode, I brought in Laura Stevenson, one of my students of the Zero to 100k system, to give her some one-on-one coaching so that you can hear how these roll out. When I first pulled up her video to do this coaching session, she was beaming with excitement to geek out about her business with me. Laura was the marketing director of a dental practice with three practices, and just quit the job two weeks ago to focus on her family and work on her business full-time.She started her course in February 2019 and then followed Alison’s roadmap by creating her first products, and selling them on deal sites. She later created her own Shopify store in August where she sells t-shirts, jewelry, and home decor to women who love the outdoors to add a touch of nature to their homes or what they wear. I will start off the coaching session by looking at her site and highlighting the first thing she needs to do, and that’s to make sure that her vision comes out clearly on her website. Her goal is to inspire people to feel the satisfaction of being outside by selling them her products, but that goal doesn’t come out so clearly in her very well put together and beautiful site. And this is one of the success factors in eCommerce. One might have a great online store, but if they don’t sell their vision clearly to their target market, they might find themselves selling less and less moving forward. I’ll share so much more advice with Laura on how she can improve on her site and strategically brand her products to increase her sales and grow her business in the long term. Stay tuned to get some first-hand experience on getting one-on-one coaching from me.Key Takeaways:Laura’s less more statement: Less of what she wants to do, so she can make more room for what she really wants to do (04:49)Leaving her job two weeks to go into her business full-time (06:50)Building up her storytelling to bring out her vision more to her audience (12:06)Creating habits into your products and your customers (18:32)The habit of creating love or gratitude notes: Creating new products and making them an event in customers’ lives (22:19)Making the brand more about the customers and less about you (24:08)How to work with influencers and how they can help you speed up your process so much faster (28:42)Creating value for customers to come over and sign up on your email list (31:15)The best strategies for email marketing and leveraging on pop ups (35:53)Giving the urgency and scarcity that makes customers act right there and then (39:40)Moving forward with this vision of creating experiences around her products that will help people enjoy them (42:42)Additional Resources:www.InHerElements.com--Connect with Alison:FacebookInstagramLinkedIn>>> Join the $1-100k Program

Blink-182 recently released a new song and music video with Steve Aoki, and wow… So much to talk about. The lyrics are wack, the video is wack, the collaboration is wack, Steve’s Kill Bill jumpsuit is kinda cool but also kinda wack, and there’s just a lot of things going wrong with a band that’s been so important to us over the years. That then begs the questions… Did the integrity of the band leave with Tom? Have they sold out? Do we care if they sold out? What does the future of Blink-182 look like moving forward? Before we can answer those questions, we gotta do what we do best: speculate wildly over unimportant details of the music video, and break down the lyrics that are super self-explanatory, but not before totally forgetting to mention major details like the blinding and totally cringe-worthy Smirnoff vodka ad that totally just made matters worse. Also, Tom is starting a vlog (but don’t tell Pat), the guys discuss publishing their first book, our sister station “Oh, Canada” drops in to give some takes on Mr. Aoki, and we all take a little bit of time to relax. On this week's show, artists battle their inner demons – the kind that come out a night when you're alone in bed, trying to find sleep – speak truth to power, celebrate love, dig into complicated characters with troubled pasts and much more. This includes a kind of demented nursery rhyme from singer Billie Eilish; the London-based duo Tender and their deep reflection on ruinous self-indulgence; and producer T Bone Burnett's new album with a prayer to overcome fear. Also on the show: The artist known as Many Rooms confronts organized religion; New York singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson has a new album inspired by the inevitable end of the universe; Lucy Dacus reimagines the French love song "La Vie En Rose" as a driving anthem to love; and producer and musician John Vanderslice returns from a five-year break from making music with a new solo album called The Cedars and a complicated tale of bent love

Oax - Love And Crashing After four years of heavy touring schedules with Bishop Allen and The Rosebuds, it was time to leave New York and head back South to his home of Houston, TX. Not the hippest city in the country, but that was sort of the point. What started as a open-ended hiatus from music and a venture into graduate school in architecture at Rice University, it didn’t take too long before Giorgio Angelini started writing music again. Oh, and there was a break-up, of course. What record worth it’s weight in wax hasn’t been seeded by a good ol’ fashioned heart ripping? Distance is, indeed, a killer.Oax is the result. The name coming from the seemingly endless canopy of live oak trees that covers Houston like a carpet. Not native to Houston, the trees were planted by early settlers as a way to provide shelter from the punishing Texas sun. And lucky enough, they managed to thrive like weeds in the swampy bayou soup of Houston soil. Read More: http://s.tt/12XSw 15. Laura Stevenson & The Cans - Master Of Art As some of the finest musicians Brooklyn has to offer, it’s hard to believe Laura Stevenson & The Canshaven’t achieved the epic fame their music demands. They can jump from subtle folk, to bluegrass, to rock, to punk and back again within the bat of an eyelid. Stevenson can manipulate her voice to sound kitsch and rabid at any one time; she can put out stars and light them back up again. I’d be unsurprised if she spends most of her time walking on her hands. One minute you’re listening to a leftfield take on acoustic music; the next you’re basked in a fervour that borders shouty, punchy hysteria. And it always works; there are never any flaws. Inca Gold - Dark Moves After a well received debut EP, Inca Gold I in February, London four piece Inca Gold released the second in a triptych for 2011, Inca Gold II on 8th June on Color and Vision Records. Ethereal vocals? Check? Keyboard bleeps? Swirling Psychedelia? Yep Cinematic atmosphere!? Yes sirrreee…. The equation for Inca Gold‘s wide screen soundscapes could appear in a book about ‘how to surf the zeitgeist in 2011′s all too cluttered music scene.’ But wait their formula doesn’t contain pretension of MGMT, the blandness of the xx, or the sheer annoyance of The Naked or the Famous! Inca’s modest lilting, dreamy refrains ghost their way into your brain like half remembered dreams of the past. Read More: http://s.tt/12Qv4 18. Fennell has meticulously climbed his way up the musical ladder, fusing with psych, ska, garage and folk troupes along his way. This isn’t because Fennell doesn’t want to shackle himself down to the restrictions of a singular genre – it is simply because he can’t.
