On today's show I share my conversation with Therese Shechter, award-winning filmmaker and writer, and the founder of the feminist production company Trixie Films. Her work fuses humor, activism, and personal storytelling to disrupt what's considered most sacred about womanhood. She is a Canada Council for the Arts grantee for her documentary My So-Called Selfish Life which is having its World Premier this week at the Woodstock Film Festival. The film examines what it means to say no to motherhood in a society that assumes all women want children, and exposes what's at stake when women are denied the right to control their own reproductive lives. It is the third part of a trilogy which includes her films “How To Lose Your Virginity” (2013) and “I Was A Teenage Feminist” (2005). These documentaries have screened from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul to Seoul, and her work is in the collections of over 300 universities, non-profits, and libraries. I had the opportunity of a sneak peak at her film and it's fascinating, thought provoking, informative and entertaining… and this is coming from someone who has struggled to have children yet is STILL trying!Woodstock Film Festival Showtimes and Locations:World Premiere: Thursday, September 30 4:45 PM at Bearsville Theater, Woodstock, NYEncore Screening: Friday, October 1 11:00 AM at Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties NYVirtual Screenings: September 29-Oct 10 streaming onlineTickets: https://bit.ly/SelfishLifeWoodstockTrailer: https://myselfishlife.com/I played songs by Miss Eaves, and Fanny, but I don't have the rights to them so you only get a sample here. Katniss Everqueer is the filthy, food-covered performance artist of Green Mountain Cabaret. Whether she's covered in cheesecake or getting paddled on stage, this performer loves blurring the lines between provocative and obscene, between dancer and audience. Her numbers are often interactive and nostalgic, referencing the beloved (Golden Girls, Mad Madam Mim, Wayne's World) to the slightly horrific and bizarre (Silence of the Lambs, Lotso Huggin' Bear, Tammy Faye Bakker, Young Frankenstein). Katniss won 1st place and Audience Favorite in Green Mountain Cabaret's 2018 Newcomers Show and 1st place at Lady Luck Burlesque's 2019 amateur showcase. She's performed across the state, in the Vermont Burlesque Festival, the Fierce Queer Burlesque Festival, EllieCon, and guested with the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society and Foxy Tann's Wham Bam Nation. Katniss is featured in Miss Eaves's video for the single, "Belly Bounce." She's a proud, fat, queer envelope pusher, and will lick almost anything she can get her mouth on. Upcoming shows: Fierce 6/5 & 6/12 First ever Rutland Vermont Pride, 6/12 Beached Whales, a celebration of fat burlesque and drag, Monkey House, Winooski Vermont Splish Splash, Nocte Covina Burlesque, virtual, 6/18 The Drunk & Under Quarantine Comedy Show, virtual, 6/23. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/amapofmyevolution/support

S****y Idea Time: a celebration of bold business experiments
Schaffer the Darklord (or STD) is a New York City-based rapper and comedian with material best-suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences. With manic energy fueling a cartoonishly commanding stage presence, STD skewers such topics as hedonistic substance abuse, sexual compulsion, urban anxiety and obsessive cat-enthusiasts. Imagine a Frankenstein-esque monster assembled from equal parts Bill Hicks, Adam Yauch, Joey Ramone and Prince, stitched together inside the shell of a maniacal heavy metal ex-patriot. STD has released eight albums and toured the country with such artists as MC Chris, Miss Eaves, MC Frontalot, Mega Ran and MC Lars. When he's not on the road, he produces and co-hosts The Epic Piecast on the Nerdy Show Podcast Network. In this episode, we talk about music, vulnerability, boundaries and creating a safety net while pursuing something scary.

Is conscious rap dead or alive? Which rappers are WokeNFree? In this episode, we will talk all about rap PLUS…you will get to know the one and only rapper Miss Eaves. ----more---- Episode Shout-out to Riot grrrl, nerdcore, Peaches, Sia, M.I.A., LIZZO, Leikeli47, Urban Dictionary, ThoughtCo., Facebook, Queen Latifah, Kendrick Lamar, Immortal Technique, MC-Lyte, Lupe Fiasco, Kurtis Blow, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube, Killer Mike, KRS-One, Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Kanye West, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, K-Os, Nas, and Lauryn Hill. Miss Eaves is the feminist sound storm of Brooklyn based multimedia artist Shanthony Exum. Her fierce femcee electro-pop-rap-dance-explosions were born as a phoenix arisen from the hot fire of both a band and romantic break-up, and she has since spread her wings and played music around the world. Miss Eaves’ brazen, patriarchy push-back, it’s my body, take-no-sh*t lyrics are rabid animals of honesty. “Hand down my pants I flick the bean. My boo ghost but I don’t need him. Five digits gonna make me squirm and scream. This is all on me.” She says in “Hump Day,” which was featured on Glamour, Huffington Post and Refinery 29. Her 0 f***s attitude landed her an invitation for a European tour with collaborator and friend, Surfing Leons (Belgium) as well as a tour with Wheatus and MC Frontalot. She has also killed the stage at Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld and Dour and Les Rockomotive. It's General Election week, but there'll be no talk of #GE2017 here (firstly, it's already over.) Instead, we discuss Prince William's revelatory interview with GQ - and Princess Diana's relationship with the media. Also in today's episode, we discuss Miss Eaves' music video ‘Thunder Thighs' and the new spate of ‘body posi' bloggers; and whether purely inhabiting your body could be more progressive than ‘owning' it. Also noteworthy: Dolly is addicted to Wagamama and Pandora went to see the Baywatch movie. Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review for The High Low on iTunes! Every review helps.
