With a rich background in the restaurant industry, including leadership roles at Baja Fresh, Wagamama, Nando's, and Buddy's Pizza, Burton brings a business-savvy approach to the world of escape rooms. His career has been centered around high-growth, brand-led companies, which made Escapology—a fast-growing escape room franchise with a strong emphasis on brand identity—a natural next step. In this interview, Burton talks about brand-led businesses, disconnect to reconnect, and the future of escape rooms. Brand-Led Businesses “I always want to work someplace where when I get on the airplane, I don't put a piece of paper in my pocket to cover up the logo.” Burton explains that brand-led businesses have a distinct identity that resonates emotionally with consumers, unlike commodity-driven models. He points out that a brand like Disney evokes excitement and emotional connection, while a commodity might be viewed as interchangeable or forgettable. From a leadership standpoint, he emphasizes that it's easier to rally a team around a brand that stands for something. Employees feel a sense of pride when the brand on their shirt is something others recognize and admire. That internal passion, he says, is contagious and helps permeate enthusiasm throughout the organization. Transitioning from restaurants to attractions, Burton notes that although the escape room industry is relatively new, the foundational leadership principles remain the same. “Leadership is leadership,” he says, emphasizing that strong team culture and strategic planning are transferable across industries when they're rooted in purpose and clarity. Disconnect to Reconnect “What escape rooms offer you is the opportunity to disconnect from your device and reconnect with your friends and family.” Burton describes a key differentiator of escape rooms: the opportunity to truly unplug and engage in a meaningful, shared activity. At a time when screens dominate daily life, Escapology encourages people to step into immersive environments that demand teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. This idea of “disconnect to reconnect” isn't just a catchy phrase—it's central to the guest experience. He also addresses common misconceptions that may prevent people from trying an escape room, such as fears of being physically locked in. Escapology aims to overcome that barrier with inviting locations in mainstream retail environments and licensed IP like Scooby-Doo and Batman. These approachable themes lower the intimidation factor and encourage first-timers to take the leap. Once they do, he says, most guests are hooked by the joy and adrenaline of the experience. The Future of Escape Rooms “We want to continue to make things feel seamless, that they just happen… Technology is a great way to do that.” Looking ahead, Burton sees the future of escape rooms becoming increasingly immersive and emotionally resonant. He notes a shift from puzzle-centric gameplay to experiences that prioritize atmosphere and storytelling. Recent games like Haunted House and Pirate's Curse focus heavily on set design and narrative, offering guests more than just a mental challenge—they're stepping into a different world. Innovation will also come in the form of technology integration, but with intentionality. Escapology uses tech to support the story rather than distract from it, aiming for those moments of awe and surprise—like a magic trick that leaves guests wondering how it all worked. As the industry grows, Burton predicts greater consolidation and sophistication, with larger players like Escapology leading the charge by investing in high-quality game development and expanding their franchise model worldwide. Would you expect to find the Pub Landlord chowing down in a Wagamama? Neither would we but it's exactly where he'll be. Al Murray tells Russell why he always has the same noodles, the best place to get pissed in Ireland and a sidetrack into trained cannon musicians. Al Murray is a proper British treasure. If you only know him as the Pub Landlord then there's so much more - he gives so much History, explains some fascinating background to percussion (he's a dab hand percussionist) and is a font of knowledge that refuses to stop spewing interesting stuff all over the podcast floor. It was a nightmare to clean up but that's NOT YOUR PROBLEM. As you heard on the podcast Al makes a regular WW2 podcast ‘We Have Ways of Making you Talk' which you can find HERE. If you haven't seen Al live, then you really should. One of the best. Such a great comic. He's just extended his current tour ‘Guv Island'. Check out the tour dates and get tickets by visiting Al's website www.thepublandlord.com In our Patreon Show this week, Al answers your questions, telling us which country is best at wars in history ever, he recommends the greatest drum solo ever recorded and Russell tells Al about the best/worst prank that was ever played on him. It is a cruel one. Really spicy. Go to: patreon.com/RussellHoward to get involved. We want to see you there, it's a lot of fun and you can join for free to start with so nothing to lose! I believe that's all the housekeeping. If you're still with me on this epic reading journey then well done. As a treat, I will tell you that I think the word ‘shoffice' is the worst in the English Language. And I don't mind mashing two words together at all, but everything about shoffice is ugly - it demeans two perfectly good words, and ideas, and the word, concept and everything about it is bleak. It's not a shoffice it's a shed with a computer in it. There you go. Some ‘treat' that was. Until next time, and remember to wrap up warm. You can't catch a cold by going out dressed like that (it's a virus, that's not how colds work) but you will look like a plucked chicken. Bye bye. Since 2007 the Press Up hospitality group has been a key and highly visible player in Dublin's social scene with super-stylish restaurants, popular nightclubs and bars and a cinema.Founded by old schoolfriends Matt Ryan and Paddy McKillen jnr it changed the face of dining out in the capital, growing fast by developing its own restaurants and buying existing, successful operations including Wagamama, Elephant and Castle and Wowburger. The group also built a large property portfolio. But its borrowings were onerous and in a debt-for-equity restructuring, Cheyne Capital, a London-based finance house that was owed €45 million took control of the business. Cheyne is injecting €20 million in fresh capital into the group. For 18 venues, it's business as usual. But three high-profile brands that operate several venues – Wowburger, Elephant and Castle and Wagamama were quickly placed in receivership with the announcement this week that the long-established and hugely popular Wagamama chain is to close with immediate effect. So what happened? And what will happen now to the rest of the group's venues and its 935 employees? Irish Times business editor Ciarán Hancock explains.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. Will has spent his career to date helping organisations build new capabilities and solve strategic challenges. Working both as a consultant and as part of the management team for operationally complex businesses like Siemens, trainline.com, Intercontinental Hotels, his roles were typically focussed on weaving together the activities from cross functional teams to build solutions that increased customer engagement, spend and profitability. In 2016, based on the hypothesis that the levers to drive sustainability focussed outcomes were the same as those he had build his career on, he started his pivot towards sustainability. Since then he has helped a tech business leverage data to reduce food waste for a budget airline, digitise the UK's largest tech skills apprenticeship provider to materially reducing their carbon footprint, he was ESG programme lead the for Wagamama's owner, The Restaurant Group and now is Head of Sustainability at Whitbread PLC, owners of Premier Inn who have over 850 Hotels in the UK and Germany and over 200 UK restaurants with brands such as Beefeater and Brewers Fayre – where he leads their ESG programme called Force For Good.

The FTSE 100 was on the back foot again after US tech stocks tanked as Google owner Alphabet took a beating after its latest results. That led to tech-heavy US index Nasdaq having its worst day since February, which dragged on London with Footsie down 49 at 7,364 in early trades. Standard Chartered led the retreat as the Asia-focused bank reported a sharp drop in profit in the third quarter, taking a hit from its exposure to Chinese banking and real estate, although the bank backed its annual guidance. WPP was also under pressure as the ad agency warned full-year revenue and profit margins would be lower than expected, as advertising spending fell in North America and China remained weak. Slightly better was Marmite and Ben & Jerry's owner Unilever, which reported price growth continued to ease in the third quarter as it unveiled a 5.2% rise in underlying sales. A takeover battle might be on the way at Wagamama owner Restaurant Group with Pizza Express said to be interested in taking it away. Restaurant has already agreed a £500m bid from private equity group Apollo. Among the small caps, Kromek shares marched 24% higher after it reported winning a US$5.9m contract from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to research and develop biosecurity technologies. #ProactiveInvestors #marketreport #ftse100 #nasdaq #alphabet #google #standardcharteredbank #wpp #unilever #pizzaexpress #wagamama #kromek #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Welcome back everyone! I'm excited to kick off this season of The Firm Analyst. In this episode, we discussed: Travers and K&E losing top ESG partners to Freshfields and Paul Hastings respectively and how ESG talent is becoming increasingly sought after in the legal market; the FCA bringing Cryptocurrencies within the financial promotions regulatory framework and warning against 146 firms within the first 24 hours of the regulation coming into force for alleged breaches; and Apollo making a firm offer for Wagamama's parent company The Restaurant Group PLC, valuing its shares at £506 mn. I hope you enjoy this episode!
Buzz can be as much of a factor for a restaurant's success as the caliber of its food and service. Yet the industry has seen countless instances of reality falling short of the hoopla. This week's edition of Restaurant Rewind looks back at a prime example, the Wagamama ramen chain. The brand's success in Europe fostered ample talk that the low-priced favorite of London hipsters would make a similar splash on the U.S. side of the Atlantic. Yet, all these years later, the concept has only seven American outposts open, not the hundreds other parts of the world have seen. The lack of traction is especially puzzling because the brand had an early proxy in the U.S. that proved the concept's viability, a close and highly successful knockoff in the harsh proving ground of New York City. What happened to a concept with so much potential and industry attention? Join us as we take a look at this prime example of a promising concept somehow failing to find traction. Download the episode from wherever you get your podcasts.
It pays to understand the people behind the company, in this case Matthew de la Hey, co-founder of inploi, in order to understand the corporate ethos of the company. Coming from South Africa he understood first-hand the unfairness of life and wanted to make a difference. “South Africa is a very complicated place, as well as a very beautiful place, with one of the most unequal societies in the world. Growing up there and being exposed to its inequalities instilled in me a strong sense of social justice. “I think if we are to survive as a society, we need to address how capitalism works. Capitalism needs to adapt, and we need to level the playing field and create opportunity for all.” Part of that vision led de la Hey into becoming a council member of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism last year. He sees capitalism as being an extraordinary economic system for growth and innovation but this vehicle needs to be harnessed for everyone, otherwise society will buckle under its own weight and the inequality it produces. “We need to build more equal, more productive, happier, healthier societies, rather than a race to bottom where some people get very rich and a lot of people have nothing. We need a more inclusive, more sustainable approach, that considers all stakeholders and upholds a social contract”. de la Hey is also a sometime poet and during lockdown he set-up Ozymandeus, a literary platform publishing submissions of creative writing from everyone. He is self-deprecating and says this Covid project was really only a cover for him to publish some of his own poetry. His own career trajectory was to win a scholarship to Oxford after studying accountancy as an undergraduate where he did a Master's of Science in African Studies followed by a Masters of Business Administration. The irony of moving to the UK to study Africa is not lost on him. Looking for summer work whilst couch surfing between his degrees, he found that it was very difficult to find and apply for jobs using the internet. Together with friend Alex Hanson-Smith who'd had shared experiences, and still couch surfing, they decided to really evaluate why online hiring methods were not working, for job seekers or for companies. That was in 2016 and they both decided this was more than a problem, it was a business opportunity. Some have called inploi - Shopify for hiring, with its front-end solution - and Software with a Service approach - providing a new shop front to enterprise hiring. Rather than trying to disrupt the HR tech sector, they have set out to harmonize it. inploi began life as a software marketplace for hiring, modelled on the platform Linkedin. Over time and during Covid, they realized that the user experience for the candidates was just not working. “The Covid pandemic could have been the end of us” said de la Hey. “But we made it through, and part of the lockdown experience was the realization that so called ‘low skilled' workers are in fact essential. Coming out of the pandemic the labour market has been historically tight, and companies did not have the technology or the expertise to navigate that. Fortunately, we'd spent the last few years developing those things.” Realising that a big part of the problem companies face comes down to outdated talent attraction technologies - especially ineffective for reaching millennial and GenZ audiences- inploi moved from building a marketplace to creating a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform for large employers. inploi integrates with existing back-end systems to transform the way companies reach candidates and convert them into hireable applicants. The brands working with inploi are companies such as the Compass Group, Butlins, Wagamama and Haven. “We've done a lot of work optimising traditionally clunky application flows: hard to navigate, opening in multiple tabs, not working from a mobile phone, asking for CVs to be uploaded where they're not needed - I could go on and on. The candidate experience is fre...

Vivien Wong is the co-founder of Little Moons, a mochi ice cream brand. Vivien grew up in North West London and spent many of her formative years helping out at her parent's bakery. It was there that her passion for high quality ingredients and artisanal recipes was first sparked. She went on to study at the University of Reading before beginning her career at Barclays where she qualified as a chartered accountant and worked for four years. Spotting the opportunity to bring mochi ice cream to Europe and believing that her and her brother Howard were in the perfect position to do so, she left her job in the city and set up Little Moons in 2010. It took two years to perfect the process and recipes before Little Moons began selling their mochi into restaurants, including high street favourites such as Yo! Sushi and Wagamama as well as higher end restaurants like Nobu and Sushi Samba. The business went from strength to strength and in 2015 Little Moons launched into Whole Foods, subsequently gaining listings on Ocado in 2016 and in Waitrose in 2017. Little Moons is now available across a range of supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's and Asda.
