Last time we spoke about Yamato's Last Stand. In the spring of 1945, as WW2 intensified, the US Marines commenced a fierce assault on Okinawa. Amidst heavy bombardment, the Japanese 32nd Army fortified their positions, preparing for a desperate counteroffensive. Codenamed Operation Ten-Ichi-Go, Japan's final bid involved the legendary battleship Yamato, tasked with a suicidal mission to confront the American fleet. On April 7, 1945, as the Yamato sailed towards its fate, American forces were ready. Hundreds of aircraft descended upon the ship in a coordinated attack, unleashing bombs and torpedoes. Despite its infamous firepower, Yamato struggled against the relentless onslaught. With its systems failing, Captain Aruga and Admiral Ito made the agonizing decision to go down with their ship. As the proud battleship sank, it symbolized both Japan's indomitable spirit and the crushing weight of defeat, forever etching its story into the annals of military history. The Japanese naval-air counteroffensive against Admiral Spruance's forces at Okinawa had been decisively defeated with minimal losses, allowing General Buckner's 10th Army to proceed with the land offensive largely without interference. While General Geiger's Marines advanced toward the sparse Japanese defenses in northern Okinawa, General Hodge's 24th Corps in the south encountered the main enemy line of resistance centered around the Shuri fortified zone. Initially, the 32nd Army had declined to launch a land counteroffensive in conjunction with Operation Ten-Go and the Yamato's suicide attack, fearing that the Americans might execute another amphibious landing at Machinato while the Japanese wasted their strength in a futile effort to reclaim the airfields. However, pressure from Tokyo and Formosa compelled General Ushijima to resume planning for this operation. Ultimately, it was decided that instead of initiating a broad counterattack, the Japanese would deploy a brigade-strength force overnight on April 12 to breach the American lines and advance approximately six miles. If successful, this would be followed by a general attack. Accordingly, Colonel Yoshida Masaru's 22nd Regiment was assigned to the 62nd Division and assembled northeast of Shuri, tasked with attacking through enemy lines east of the Ginowan Road and advancing toward Shimabuku. To bolster this offensive, General Fujioka was also instructed to deploy three reserve battalions for a three-pronged attack from the west aimed at Chatan. However, Colonel Yahara, 32nd Army operations chief, strongly opposed the counterattack plan, feeling that it was not in keeping with the army's defensive mission and that it would waste men. He succeeded in getting the 1st Battalion of the 22d Regiment and elements of the 23d IIB cut from the counterattack force. He made a dire prediction that the infiltrating units, unfamiliar with the terrain in their attack sectors, would get lost, confused, and cut to pieces during a night assault. Taking a sidenote here, I read Yahara's rather famous novel about his experience of the battle for Okinawa and I highly recommend it to all of you. It's a great insight into the perspective of the Japanese and how the leadership were beginning to change their mind on how to go about the war. Yahara, acting without Ushijima's knowledge, advised Fujioka to commit only four battalions to the attack, predicting it would inevitably fail. Meanwhile, the American offensive was still in progress. On April 9, as Major-General George Griner's 27th Division landed at the Orange Beaches near Kadena, the ships of Colonel Waltern Winn's 105th Regiment met with Admiral Blandy's Eastern Islands Attack and Fire Support Group at the Kerama Islands, preparing to move to Tsugen Island overnight. Following a preliminary air and naval bombardment, which saw some Japanese mortar fire in response, Winn's 3rd Battalion successfully landed on the morning of April 10. The Americans then advanced inland with light resistance, quickly securing the northern part of the island but failing to overrun the entrenched enemy positions in Tsugen village. The assault continued the next day against persistent opposition, but organized resistance gradually diminished, allowing the Americans to secure the rest of the island by nightfall, marking the conclusion of the Eastern Islands operation. On April 11, General Shepherd's Marines continued to probe for the main enemy positions in northern Okinawa; the 1st Battalion, 22nd Marines patrolled eastward from their new base at Shana Wan, while the 29th Marines advanced toward Manna. Due to this progress, Buckner decided to fully merge Phases I and II, ordering the 77th Division to capture Iejima on April 16. To the south, Colonel Albert Stebbins's 106th Regiment was attached to the 96th Division, moving toward that division's reserve area, while Colonel Gerard Kelley's 165th Regiment relieved the 17th Regiment in the corps service area. Most significantly, General Bradley continued his attacks on Kakazu Ridge, with the 1st Battalion, 381st Regiment attempting to assault the western slopes but halted short of the ridge crest by determined defenders. At the same time, the 3rd Battalion, 383rd Regiment pushed up the northwest slopes of Kakazu Ridge but was also pinned down by intense Japanese fire. Simultaneously, following an intense artillery bombardment, the 1st Battalion of the 32nd Regiment finally succeeded in breaking into Ouki. However, additional reinforcements were thwarted by heavy Japanese fire, forcing the troops to retreat. With no further advancements, the 7th Division and the 382nd Regiment were relegated to patrolling and mopping up their designated areas over the next few days. At sea, Admiral Ugaki resumed his kamikaze assaults that day, damaging the carriers Essex and Enterprise, the battleship Missouri, and eight destroyers. However, his primary operation commenced on April 12, when he launched approximately 380 aircraft for a second mass Kikisui attack, primarily targeting Admiral Turner's Task Force 51 west of Okinawa. Thanks to cryptanalysis warnings, Turner scrambled his own fighter planes, which successfully shot down 298 Japanese aircraft. Despite attempting numerous missions, Kanoya's specially trained 721st Kokutai Jinrai-Butai “Divine Thunder” unit had so far failed to launch a single Ohka suicide rocket against the Americans. On April 12, however, eight Betty bombers would finally launch six Ohkas against the 5th Fleet, although five Betties never returned. At RPS-14, about 70nm northwest of Okinawa, a Zero plowed into Mannert L. Abele's engine room at 14:40, its 500lb bomb exploding and leaving the destroyer dead in the water. One minute later an Ohka came screaming in at 575mph, slammed into Mannert L. Abele and exploded. She sank in five minutes, losing 97 dead. Mannert L. Abele was the first destroyer hit by an Ohka and the last sunk by one. Destroyer-minesweeper Jeffers, en route to assist Mannert L. Abele, observed a twin-engined bomber eight miles away drop a smoking “belly tank” that suddenly rocketed towards Jeffers “at terrific speed.” Numerous 40mm hits and hard maneuvering saw the Ohka miss Jeffers astern and disintegrate. Additionally 3 battleships, 14 destroyers, 2 destroyer minesweepers, and another landing craft were damaged. Meanwhile, Admiral Rawlings' Task Force 57 was ordered to strike the Shinchiku and Matsuyama airfields in northern Formosa, and over the next two days, 48 Avengers and 40 fighters successfully attacked Shinchiku and Kiirun Harbor. On Okinawa, the 6th Reconnaissance Company captured Bise Saki with minimal resistance, while the 29th Marines faced significant opposition southeast of Manna near Mount Yae-Take, indicating where the main enemy forces were located. This prompted Shepherd to reposition the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Marines to Awa as his new divisional reserve. At the same time, Japanese guerrillas managed to retake Ishikawa, which they would hold for the following two days. Facing south, the 96th Division made another attempt to capture Kakazu but was once again thwarted by the determined defenders. By this time, approximately 5,750 Japanese soldiers were estimated to have been killed in the southern region, while the 24th Corps suffered losses of 451 men killed, 2,198 wounded, and 241 missing. In the afternoon of April 12, 1945, in Warm Springs, Georgia, while sitting for a portrait by Elizabeth Shoumatoff, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said: "I have a terrific headache." He then slumped forward in his chair, unconscious, and was carried into his bedroom. The president's attending cardiologist, Howard Bruenn, diagnosed a massive intracerebral hemorrhage. At 3:35 pm, Roosevelt died at the age of 63. His declining health had been kept secret from the public, leading to shock and sorrow worldwide upon the news of his death. Harry Truman, who was serving as vice president in 1945, succeeded FDR as president. Meanwhile, back in Okinawa, Fujioka initiated his counteroffensive after a heavy artillery bombardment, advancing his four battalions to secretly infiltrate the American lines. On the eastern front, the 22nd Regiment struggled to advance due to becoming disoriented in unfamiliar terrain.  The night attacks suffered from several unexpected problems. Heavy shelling had changed the landscape, blasting away villages and thickets, so that even though night infiltrators knew their maps and thought they knew the terrain, they lacked the landmarks needed to tell them where they actually were. Moreover, frequent illumination shells forced the eyes of night infiltrators to adjust so many times that their capacity to adjust was lost. They became temporarily blinded and so were unable to move. Because of the unfamiliar terrain and flash blindness, the Japanese night fighters had difficulty reaching their assigned objectives. In fact, it was hard for them to reach their jumping-off points. Continuous naval bombardment of crossroads and bridges forced units to rush across in small groups between shells so that the units became strung out on the roads and difficult to control. It was hard to move heavy ammunition and supplies forward because of these interdiction points and the generally churned up roads. Even when units reached their northward assembly points safely by night, they were immediately exposed to aerial observation and artillery fire at dawn, since they lacked enough time to dig in. Units that attacked across American lines safely in darkness had the same problem: they lacked time to dig in and so were utterly exposed to artillery fire at morning light. Night attacks, like flanking maneuvers, were a kind of cure-all in prewar Japanese doctrine. But they failed to provide the expeditious results on Okinawa that IJA doctrine had led the 32d Army Staff to expect. Consequently, Yoshida's four infiltration attempts, each involving about a squad, were effectively repelled by troops from the 32nd, 184th, and 382nd Regiments before midnight. The only significant attack came from around 45 Japanese soldiers against the positions held by Company G of the 184th, which quickly returned fire, forcing the enemy to retreat to their caves and trenches. In contrast, the assault on the 96th Division on the western front was intense, sustained, and well-coordinated. The forward units of Major-General Nakajima Tokutaro's 63rd Brigade launched their own local offensive to maintain pressure on the thin line held by the 382nd and 383rd Regiments, while elements from the 23rd, 272nd, and 273rd Independent Battalions infiltrated the American lines and moved into the Ginowan area. The majority of the 272nd Division launched an assault on American positions at Kakazu Ridge, enduring intense naval and artillery fire but ultimately being repelled by the determined defenders after several hours of combat. By morning, the bodies of 317 enemy soldiers were counted on the ridge, whereas the Americans suffered 50 casualties. Meanwhile, the 273rd Division attacked along the west coast against the recently arrived 2nd Battalion of the 106th Regiment, which decisively repelled the Japanese assault and nearly annihilated the independent battalion. Despite this, some units from the 23rd and 272nd Independent Battalions managed to penetrate approximately 1,000 yards behind American lines between Nishibaru and Kaniku but became isolated after dawn on April 13. Throughout the day, Bradley's troops worked to eliminate these infiltrators, many of whom detonated explosives when trapped. When these units retreated into Japanese lines later that night, only half of their original numbers had survived. Just before midnight, the reserve 9th Company of the 22nd Regiment launched an attack against the 184th Regiment following preparatory artillery fire, but this offensive was quickly disrupted by artillery, mortars, and machine-gun fire. On April 14, Nakajima's forces attempted two more assaults on Kakazu in the early hours, but these attempts were similarly thwarted by artillery and machine-gun fire. Given the failures of the offensives, Ushijima had no choice but to order a suspension of the attack, resulting in a shift to a defensive posture for the Japanese. Over the two days of combat, the 24th Corps reported killing 1,594 Japanese soldiers and capturing four, with losses of fewer than 100 American troops. In the northern region, an extensive air and naval bombardment of Iejima commenced while the Fleet Marine Force Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion landed on Minna Island, securing it without encountering resistance to position artillery units for General Bruce's upcoming attack, which would involve the 305th and 306th Regiments. Meanwhile, in northern Okinawa, the 29th Marines continued to advance against enemy positions at Yae-Take through vigorous patrolling, preparing for a morning assault the next day. Concerned about the pace of progress, Shepherd relieved Colonel Bleasdale of command, replacing him with veteran Colonel William Whaling. However, Shepherd recognized that taking the 1,200-foot summit would require more than one regiment, so he ordered the 4th Marines to move from the east coast to Yofuke and then to the southwest corner of the Motobu Peninsula. Additionally, Colonel Shapley's 3rd Battalion was tasked with moving to Kawada, while the reinforced 2nd Battalion of the 22nd Marines rapidly advanced up the west coast to secure Hedo Misaki. On April 14, Shepherd initiated a coordinated assault on Yae-Take, with Whaling's 3rd Battalion and Shapley's 2nd Battalion advancing from the area around Toguchi against unexpectedly light resistance, while the rest of the 29th Marines moved out from Itomi to clear the Itomi-Toguchi Road. Although the eastern front faced strong opposition and required a change in strategy to advance southwesterly for better elevation advantage, rapid progress was made on the west, prompting Shapley to commit his reserve 1st Battalion to secure the exposed right flank. At the same time, Whaling's 3rd Battalion and Shapley's 2nd Battalion continued their advance against significantly strengthened enemy resistance, ultimately capturing another ridge located 1,000 yards ahead. Initial opposition consisted of small enemy groups. These hostile covering forces employed every available means to delay and disorganize the advance, and to mislead the attackers as to the location of the battle position. The Japanese would lie in concealment, with weapons zeroed in on a portion of a trail, allowing a considerable number of Marines to pass before opening up on a choice target. An entire platoon was permitted to pass a point on a trail without interference, but when the company commander reached that point with his headquarters section, a burst of machine-gun fire killed him and several others. Officer casualties were excessively high. In an area in which there had been no firing for over half an hour, Major Bernard W. Green, commanding the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, was killed instantly by machine-gun fire. No one else was hurt, although Major Green was standing with his operations and intelligence officers on either side of him. Lieutenant Colonel Fred D. Beans, Regimental Executive Officer, assumed command of the battalion. "It was like fighting a phantom enemy." For while the hills and ravines were apparently swarming with Japanese, it was difficult to close with them. The small enemy groups, usually built around a heavy Hotchkiss machine gun augmented by Nambus, would frequently change positions in the dense vegetation. Hostile volleys elicited furious Marine fusillades into the area from whence the firing had come. But after laboriously working their way to the spot, the Marines came upon only an occasional bloodstain on the ground. Neither live nor dead Japanese were to be found. One Marine registered his impression of these tactics by blurting out, "Jeez, they've all got Nambus, but where are they?" Meanwhile, the 29th Marines advanced 800 yards up steep slopes despite facing fierce opposition; however, the 1st Battalion eventually found itself pinned down by intense Japanese gunfire. Additionally, Shapley's 3rd Battalion crossed the island via motor march to relieve the 3rd Battalion of the 22nd Marines in division reserve, which then returned to its patrol base at Majiya. To the south, Hodge recognized the need for a full-scale effort to penetrate the fortified Shuri area, so he scheduled a corps attack involving three divisions abreast for April 19. In preparation, he dedicated the following four days to organizing the assault, with the 27th Division taking over from the 96th Division in the western region of its zone, while smaller local attacks were conducted to enhance forward positions. Aware of the impending major attack, the Japanese used this preparatory period to bolster their defenses with additional supporting weapons. Back to the north, on April 15, most of the 29th Marines consolidated their defenses on high ground and exerted constant pressure on the rear of the Yae-Take position through vigorous patrols to the west and northwest. On the other hand, Whaling's 3rd Battalion advanced east and south approximately 900 yards amidst heavy machine-gun, mortar, and artillery fire before being halted by a strong enemy position on Hill 210. Additionally, the 4th Marines faced fierce resistance as Shapley's battalions finally secured Hill 200 and a critical hill mass just southwest of Yae-Take. Fully aware that his primary positions would soon be overrun, Colonel Udo decided to transition to guerrilla tactics by nightfall, relocating his command to the mountainous regions of northern Okinawa via Itomi. In light of these developments, the 1st Battalion, 22nd Marines was placed into division reserve at Awa to allow Shapley's 3rd Battalion to prepare for the following day's assault. On April 16, the offensive resumed, with Whaling's 3rd Battalion swiftly capturing Hill 210 in conjunction with Shapley's 2nd Battalion. Meanwhile, the rest of the 4th Marines secured a ridge just below Yae-Take by midday, while the 29th Marines applied continuous pressure on the rear of Udo's fortified stronghold. While the 4th Marines was storming the fortified position on Yae-Take, the 29th Marines maintained relentless pressure against its rear. The opposition which faced the 29th was similar to that on the front of the 4th. From log-revetted bunkers and occasional concrete emplacements the enemy resisted the advance with increasing stubbornness, supported by machine-guns, mortars, and artillery concealed in ravines and in caves on the high ground. Rugged terrain and an acute supply situation also contributed to the difficulties confronting the 29th Marines in accomplishing its task of clearing the high ground flanking the Itomi-Toguchi Road. The enemy displayed his usual ability to exploit the terrain and derived the maximum benefit from his weapons emplaced in caves and pits and concealed by natural cover. Particularly noteworthy was his use of 20mm dual-purpose cannon against personnel. Fire from these weapons on battalion CPs was a daily occurrence. All roads and natural avenues of approach were covered. Any attempt to move over the easier routes was met with bitter and effective resistance. Consequently, "the method of reducing the enemy positions followed a pattern of 'ridgehopping'," covered by the fires of all supporting weapons. This tactic enabled the attacker to envelop the hostile defenses and reduce them in detail. Numerous abandoned positions and weapons encountered by the 29th indicated that the determination of the Japanese to resist diminished considerably when they were taken from the flank. In contrast to a coordinated advance with all units in contact across a broad front, the action in the zone of the 29th Marines was characterized by attacks that, even when delivered simultaneously, constituted a series of local patrol actions to seize critical positions, followed by mopping up activity within the area. In the afternoon, Shapley's 1st and 3rd Battalions assaulted the formidable mountain, gradually making their way up the steep slope under light and scattered small-arms fire. However, as the Marines reached the peak, they encountered intense fire at close range, which quickly forced them to pull back. After a fierce and close engagement, the 1st Battalion ultimately regained control of Yae-Take, managing to hold the summit against strong Japanese counterattacks, aided by artillery support and Shapley's 2nd Battalion. Meanwhile, at dawn on April 16, two battleships, four cruisers, and seven destroyers under Rear-Admiral Bertram Rodgers launched a heavy bombardment on Iejima, while aircraft bombed and rocketed the island, dropping tanks of napalm on and behind the beaches. Approximately 2,000 Japanese troops, led by Major Igawa Masashi, had destroyed Iejima's airfields and strengthened the central eastern region of the island in an effort to entice the invaders to approach the vulnerable southeastern beaches. Their aim was to annihilate them with concentrated fire from numerous hidden positions in the Pinnacle and the town of Ie. However, the Americans saw through this strategy. Bruce's plan involved landing Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Coolidge's 305th Regiment on the Red Beaches along the southern coast of Iejima and Colonel Aubrey Smith's 306th Regiment on the Green Beach at the island's southwest tip. The 305th was tasked with advancing eastward to capture additional landing areas, while the 306th was to move north and take control of the airfield. Both regiments would then focus on neutralizing enemy strongholds at the island's eastern end. Following intense air and naval bombardments, amphibious tanks and subsequent waves of amphibious tractors surged toward the landing beaches that morning, supported by rocket fire from LCI gunboats. At 07:58, the forward elements of the 1st Battalion, 305th Regiment successfully landed on the southern coast of Iejima, just south of the airfield, while the 3rd Battalion landed on a different beach, 600 yards to the left, three minutes later. At 08:07, the first waves of the 306th Regiment made landfall on Green Beach. The 305th moved swiftly inland over high dunes and then turned east toward Ie, while the 306th advanced 2,000 yards inland to the airfield's western edge, with the reserve 3rd Battalion securing the island's western end. By the afternoon, the troops advanced rapidly, seizing the airfield with only light resistance, achieving a total gain of about 5,500 yards by nightfall. Conversely, the 305th faced stiffer opposition on its way to Ie, managing to advance only about 800 yards eastward while defending against strong nighttime counterattacks. During the night of 16 April the enemy launched a coordinated attack on the 3d Battalion of the 305th. The attack came with suicidal recklessness. The Japanese were supported by mortars and 70-mm. guns, and were armed with small arms, sharpened stakes, bags of hand grenades, and literally hundreds of satchel charges, some of which had been improvised from mortar shells. Japanese worked up to the perimeters in small groups and either threw their satchel charges at close range or blew themselves up in an effort to take Americans with them. Some of the human bombs were successful, but most of the Japanese were killed before they came within effective range. One American had his arm broken by the flying leg of a Japanese soldier who had blown himself up. After hours of wild fighting in the dark the enemy withdrew, leaving 152 of his dead in and around the 3d Battalion's position.  While back at sea, Admiral Mitscher's Task Force 58 had effectively launched attacks on Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Kikaijima, and southern Kyushu over the past four days, the Japanese responded with a series of scattered kamikaze assaults that caused damage to the battleship New York and four destroyers. On April 16, Ugaki initiated his third large-scale Kikisui attack, acutely aware that another failure in the air could spell the doom of Operation Ten-Go. Despite Mitscher's preemptive strikes against Kyushu, where Americans claimed to have destroyed 202 aircraft and damaged 79 at the cost of only nine planes, at least 289 Japanese attackers were still able to launch missions against Spruance's 5th Fleet. Although American interceptors and anti-aircraft fire recorded another 217 kills, the surviving kamikaze pilots managed to sink the destroyer Pringle and inflict damage on the carrier Intrepid, the battleship Missouri, three destroyers, two destroyer minesweepers, and two landing craft. Notably, the destroyer Laffey withstood six kamikaze impacts, four bomb hits, and numerous strafing runs, resulting in 32 fatalities and 71 injuries among its crew. The following day, a smaller attack on April 17 resulted in additional damage to the light carrier Bataan and one destroyer, yet Americans claimed another 49 kills. However, Ugaki had exhausted much of his strength since the invasion began and was left with approximately 598 operational planes. Meanwhile, fighting continued in northern Okinawa, where some surviving troops from Udo advanced toward Nakaoshi to escape the Motobu Peninsula. Supported by heavy artillery barrages and battleship gunfire, the 29th Marines slowly progressed over challenging terrain, encountering only light resistance, as they successfully secured the mountainous area ahead and connected with the 4th Marines. Shapley's 1st and 3rd Battalions continued their push northward toward the Itomi-Toguchi Road, swiftly advancing downhill and completely overwhelming all Japanese defenses in the region. By nightfall, the 4th and 29th Marines had positioned themselves along the elevated terrain overlooking the Itomi-Toguchi Road. The 305th resumed its assault, aiming to capture the high ground behind Red Beaches 3 and 4. The 1st Battalion encountered only minimal resistance along the coast, allowing them to make significant progress, while the 3rd Battalion quickly secured the high ground in its area before being halted by intense machine-gun fire from caves in the coral slopes to the north. A maneuvering strategy followed by an infantry-tank assault eventually neutralized this enemy position, enabling the advance to continue steadily until the 3rd Battalion reached the outskirts of Ie. Due to the strong resistance faced, Bruce opted to deploy Colonel Stephen Hamilton's 307th Regiment on the beaches southwest of Ie. The 2nd and 3rd Battalions were subsequently landed there and launched an attack northeast, quickly advancing approximately 400 yards despite increasingly fierce resistance, ultimately being halted by heavy enemy fire from Bloody Ridge and Government House Hill. Meanwhile, the 306th Regiment maintained its defensive position while probing the enemy's fortifications around Iegusugu. The next day, the 306th began to pivot its right flank and launched an attack toward the Pinnacle with two battalions, making notable progress throughout the day. Concurrently, the 307th continued its advance into Ie despite facing heavy resistance, quickly reaching a standstill in front of Government House Hill. As a result, with the 2nd Battalion effectively immobilized, the decision was made to deploy the 3rd Battalion around to the right flank to launch an assault toward the northeast in the eastern part of the town, while the 3rd Battalion of the 305th Regiment advanced eastward toward Iegusugu. After a heavy preparation by the artillery on Minna Shima, the 3d Battalion, 305th, attacked at 1130 on an 800-yard front. A house-to-house fight ensued amid the rubble of Ie. "Every street became a phase line," one observer reported. The necessity of forming a connecting link over the wide area between the 306th and the 307th made the fight harder. Artillery was ineffective against many enemy positions and could not be used freely because other friendly units were so close by. Self-propelled guns were held up by mines and debris in the narrow streets. After working about halfway through the northwestern section of the town, the troops withdrew to a more secure position on the outskirts, their right (south) flank then being 500 yards west of Government House Hill, and their left (north) flank 100 yards west of the base of Iegusugu. They had made a net gain of only about 350 yards for the day. Similarly, Hamilton's 3rd Battalion achieved moderate success, advancing to a position 300 yards north of the village of Agarii-mae. To protect its right flank, the 1st Battalion of the 305th Regiment positioned itself alongside the 3rd Battalion of the 307th Regiment and launched a northern attack, gaining approximately 1000 yards by day's end before withdrawing to a position about 600 yards east of Agarii-mae. Medium tanks and self-propelled guns covered the gap that developed between the two battalions of the 307th. These weapons put direct fire into caves, pillboxes, and enemy gun positions in the town of Ie and the Pinnacle. They could not be moved close to the enemy positions, however; deadly machine-gun and mortar fire held the infantry back and left the armor vulnerable to suicide attacks by Japanese armed with satchel charges, who hid in holes until the tanks and guns came within range. Meanwhile, after four days of intense fighting, activities in the Motobu area on April 18 were limited to reorganization, consolidating the gains from the previous day, patrolling the Itomi-Toguchi Road, and resupplying. Looking south, Griner called for a nighttime preliminary attack to secure the Machinato Inlet and the Urasoe-Mura Escarpment. As the area was shrouded in smoke during the afternoon, Company G of the 106th Regiment swiftly crossed the inlet and successfully secured Machinato by nightfall, while bridges were constructed at the inlet. The 106th then moved across the bridges, stealthily advancing toward the Urasoe-Mura Escarpment without encountering opposition. Near the summit, the troops launched a surprise ambush against the defenders, ultimately forcing the Japanese to retreat in chaos. With the escarpment secured by dawn, the 106th was prepared to participate in the general attack to the south. The first Okinawa counteroffensive, as part of Operation Ten-Ichi-Go was not achieving results. Despite overwhelming sacrifices of men and supplies, it seemed hopeless for the Japanese on Okinawa. Those like Colonel Yahara could see the paint on the wall, much to their growing depression.

Frustration morphed into confusion and blossomed into happiness as I exacted my promised minute make-out session. Even a colossal distraction as big as the Mayor's family implosion wouldn't keep me from my Brandy-time.Big Bob 'caught' us at it. The door had been opened and the AC was exiting the front door.‘Hands above the belt-line, Mr. Samsonov,' he grumbled in a friendly manner.‘Daddy,' Brandy pouted to her Papa. ‘He's behaving himself.'‘Are you behaving yourself around my daughter?' the Sheriff quizzed me.‘Sir, I'd rather go directly to the 500 hours of community service than answer that question; Sir,' I replied. Big Bob snorted. Brandy rolled her eyes, gave me one last peck then glided past her patriarch.‘I haven't see her that happy in a long time,' Big Bob spoke softly. ‘Whatever you are doing, be a gentleman about it.'‘Ugh; I'll do my best Sheriff Carson, but it's difficult,' I groaned. Bob laughed at me and my 'agony'.‘Take care, Vlad,' he gave one final nod before closing the door. I made a quick call to Mom to update her to our change in plans. Mikhail had beaten me to the punch. She understood I had to hand-off Brandy first, no harm / no foul. She asked me to hang out at Dominque's place for a while because she knew Mr. Malik was a devious, lying rat-bastard and believed he would sweet talk his daughter into letting him back into his wife's proximity.I mulled over handing her the Malik family secret. I trusted Mom. More to the point, I trusted her to respect my decision to want that tidbit handled with care. No cops harassed me on the return trip. I had taken a circuitous route to be on the safe side. The Police Chief might be the Mayor's ally, or he might be a BBC devotee and have a Brutha solidarity moment with Chinedu too.According to their methodology, once he gave her that cock, she'd forgive every other indiscretion. True or not, I was going to try and cock-block that maneuver. I didn't have a plan when I arrived. Something immediately presented itself to me in the form of a Candy Apple Red 2014 Jaguar F Type V8 S convertible.Daddy, or Sugar-Daddy was way generous to the tune of one hundred grand; that was for damn sure. The billow red mane topping that curvaceous frame was a clear indicator the shit was going to hit the fan at the Malik household. Chine was her BBC addiction, but the Mayor was her boss and political mentor. The look she sent me was fearful over her general situation and one of only passing interest, a look I was becoming familiar with. She was yet another hot, sexy piece of filet mignon that didn't fuck White guys. Groan.‘Who are you?' she was polite enough, possibly seeking to delay the upcoming confrontation.‘I'm Vladimir Samsonov, junior Prince of Evil and I'm here to talk with your boss; she's expecting me,' dispelled her protest that the Mayor was too busy for me.‘Riley Pasternak,' she smiled. ‘I don't recognize the accent,' she added as I passed her. She let me ring the doorbell too.Statuesque and voluptuous; that is what I would call Riley. Burnished coppery hair, thick and glossy flowed in waves down to the middle of her back. Well defined brows of a slightly lighter but no less fiery color framed her oval face and enhanced her verdant eyes, pale freckled skin and flushed cheeks. The makeup she chose didn't really enhance her features which said she didn't wear it that often and the scar above her brow confirmed that she was a tomboy. She dressed to be seen, but also to move in whatever capacity needed. The push up black halter was a strong contrast to her pale skin and plumped up her already impressive cleavage.Below it she wore almost too tight hip huggers that had her lush belly just barely spilling over the waistband. Right above said waistband on the back of her hip was a tattoo that red ‘Red Wolf Bitch' for the Arkansas State Mascot. A second one was teasingly just out of sight on the front of the other hip.Drawing away just a bit from the sexy outfit were all the hippie doodles on her pants. It looked as if she'd let a five year old color on them before she put them on, the neon colors seeming to jump off the denim. She completed the ensemble with cork wedges and a tiny red purse hanging by an equally tiny red string from her shoulder.‘I'm from Alaska,' I let her know. The door flew open in seconds, revealing a tumultuous Dominque who slipped on a semi-civil mask when she saw me.‘Vlad, I thought you were going to stop by your place before coming back for your brother,' she addressed me. ‘Ms. Pasternak, get in here,' she was more abrupt with her 'underling'.I stepped aside to let Riley pass. I hadn't been invited in. Dominque took my actions into account.‘Come in Vlad. Go find your brother. I'll talk to you later,' she said.‘Well,' I began once I stepped in, ‘I think I'd be of more use sticking with you.'Dominque slammed the door behind me.‘I won't need you with me,' she corrected me.‘I'm not staying to help you,' I corrected her. ‘I'm staying to make sure Ms. Pasternak doesn't come to some misfortune.' The Mayor didn't seem pleased.‘What does he mean?' Riley looked from her Boss to me.‘Go, Vlad,' she commanded. I was a guest in her home. Barring extenuating circumstances, I was taught to behave.‘Well, nice to see you again, Ms. Pasternak,' I regarded my fellow guest. Off I went, listening for sounds of my brother and Taliyah. I was almost out of sight;‘Where have we met before?' Riley worried.‘Go, Vlad,' my hostess repeated. I kept going.‘The Cineplex two weeks ago,' I said over my shoulder. ‘The Purge: Anarchy.'‘Oh God,' she moaned. ‘V; Vlad is it; please don't leave.'I reversed course. Dominique could tell that ordering me about at this point was useless. The same instinct which had placed me between Chine and her was placing me between her and Riley.‘You fucked him,' Madame Mayor fumed. ‘Worse, you let him fuck you in a public place you; simple-minded bimbo.'‘Listen Mrs. Malik; it; I; he was insistent,' Riley back-pedaled into a wall.‘And you happened to forget he was my husband?' Dominque seethed. I had to admit she looked rather volcanic, her ass, hips and boobs trembling with repressed energy as she got ready to erupt. I maneuvered so I flanked them both, ready to interpose myself if necessary.‘How many times, Riley?' I posed the question. ‘How many times did the two of you hook up?'‘Four, five,' she reconsidered her response. Dominique looked ready to explode. She mastered herself with a great effort of will.‘What is going to happen when your Grandfather, that racist Jew Bastard, finds out you are back to banging big black bucks, Again?' she threatened. Riley blanched. ‘He threatened to disown you last time. This time, he'll do it, Princess. Then you will be nothing more than another in a long line of chunky Cocoa Puff's. No car, no apartment and damn, I'll make sure you don't have a job anymore.'‘Reggie won't; ‘ she protested desperately.‘Whore, you are only fun to be around because your fat ass is forbidden fruit. Senator Murdoch can get a dozen fresher Betties to haul his coal.' I'd go to Mom to explain the jargon flying around. ‘I know for a fact he likes them young.''Betty's' were White chicks. 'Hauling coal' meant taking black dick. Why couldn't people just say that instead of confusing everything with racial slurs? Riley's reaction showed she was playing into that fear; no fortune and no more choice selections of BBC's.‘Umm; ‘ Riley flickered her eyes my way.‘Chinedu already spilled all this secrets,' Dominique lied. She'd spilled them in her rage, but these two women lying and cheating wasn't my primary concern; taking advantage of their wickedness was. ‘He has his own reasons for keeping quiet.' Riley glanced speculatively from me to Dominique.‘Ha,' Madame Mayor snorted in derision. ‘I don't do White boys.' Oh, that deserved some hard fucking; screw the bitch. I was considering what derogatory idiocy was going to vomit forth from my mouth when Riley's phone rang. Absently she pulled it out of her purse. She paled when she saw the caller ID. Dom snatched it away then trembled.I took it out of her hands before she could make Riley eat the device.‘Both of you keep quiet,' I demanded. I answered the phone.‘Baby-cakes, let's hook up tonight,' Mr. Malik oozed his masculine charisma. ‘I feel like stepping out and I want to see you on your knees worshipping my award-winning Arkansas Black Snake, you cock-hungry slut.'He was loud enough so that both women could hear. I pointed a warning finger in Riley's face.‘Sorry, Mr. Baker, but Riley can't come to the phone right now. She's choking down my Slavic salami, but; after I finish with her and your wife, I'll send the tramp back your way; if she can still walk.'‘Wa, huh, wha, Who? Samsonov?, what did you just say?' he blathered.‘I'm kind of busy right now, Sir,' I taunted him. ‘Hold on.' I spanked Riley's flank. She gasped. ‘That was the sound of me smacking your wife's luscious, sweet and highly neglected ass. I gotta go. Your women look famished for some fucking respect and attention. I'm sure you can find a glory hole to entertain yourself at. I'll talk to you in the morning. Bye,' I signed off before he could reply.I cut off Riley's phone then pocketed it. They were both staring at me in utter shock. Dominique's full, plump lips first closed then she opened them to start laughing.‘Boy, Vlad, that was hilarious,' she chortled.‘That was a freebie, Dominique,' I grinned.‘There are two kinds of cheaters; the ones who convince themselves it will never happen to them, and the ones who believe everyone cheats. That allows them to both allow themselves to violate the essence of their relationships,' I glibly stated, ‘It also makes them want to utterly control their partners so they don't end up becoming cuckolds themselves.'‘Mr. Samsonov; ‘ Dominique studied me, ‘you continue to show me you are much more dangerous than you appear.' Taking into account my size, excellent physical shape, exhibited self-control and clear elucidation, I could only imagine I was 'dangerous' for a White guy; what a tight-ass shrew.‘Flattery will get you nowhere, Mrs. Malik,' I politely responded. ‘I don't do older Black chicks; or date used-up girls who only fuck Black guys. One of the three of us has to have some standards.' They blinked; it was the whole 'da White boy thinks he can talk back to us?' bullshit.‘I'll go looking for Mikhail now. You two have fun sharing in your communal 'I've been dicked-over, bent over and forced to suck another woman's vaginal fluids off his cock' Chine-experiences. I pray neither one of you've done Ass-to-Mouth with him; that would turn my stomach. Bye,' I waved as I departed. Dominique grabbed my arm, her fingernails digging in.‘What makes you think you can insult me that way, in my own house?' she lambasted me.‘It is the truth and we both know it,' I shrugged. ‘Somebody needs to start telling the truth around here, don't you think?'‘Get your brother and get out,' she snapped.‘Done deal,' I answered. ‘Riley; ‘ The doorbell rang. From the look on everyone's faces, none of us were expecting a caller.‘Don't you move,' Dom glared at me, ‘and don't you do a damn thing,' she balefully instructed Riley. Off she stormed.‘Gayle, what are you doing here?' Dom greeted my Mom.‘I brought dinner for my boys, Dominique,' she responded snidely. ‘I expect them to be gentlemen and you to not give a damn about anyone but yourself.'‘You've got some nerve showing up on my doorstep,' Dom grumbled.‘Not really,' Mom shouldered her way inside. ‘I've gotten on with my life. I see you've done the same.'‘Bitch,' Dom sizzled yet didn't stop her.‘Kitchen?' my maternal unit asked me. She was holding a wicker picnic basket and a large paper bag in one hand and a covered pot with a pail in the other. I pointed the way. She winked.Belatedly, Dominique slammed the door and stalked after Mom.‘What would ever possess you that I'd welcome you into my house,' she spat. ‘After what you did to Leon; ‘‘Had; do you really want to rehash that right now considering neither one of us has forgotten, or forgiven a damn thing?' Mom countered.‘Leon is still sucking his puree through a straw and pissing in a colostomy bag,' Dominique simmered.‘Mom?' I questioned.‘Oh, you haven't told your boys about what you and Theo did?' Dominque taunted her. Mom wasn't perturbed in the least.‘Vlad, do you trust me?' my Mother asked me.‘Sure. You can be unfathomable and crazy, but I don't think you've ever hurtfully deceive me.'‘Boy, you had better check that naiveté,' Mayor Malik warned me.‘Vlad, the last time Theo and I spent any time under the same roof was here, in Fonteneau,' she used Kingston's old name. ‘Leon Fox, Dominique's brother, and six other Black bulls decided to brutalize me, I was barely alive when I crawled my way back to the road where Mr. Cobb found me,' she relayed in a pleasant tone.‘So you say,' Dom interrupted. ‘It was your word against them and those seven had iron-clad alibis. To you, all Black men looked alike.'‘Think what you want. I identified all seven of them. You dad and the police chief wouldn't prosecute even though I know they were heard around town bragging about it; how they'd 'taught me a lesson'.'‘Mom, what the hell is going on?' I worried.‘Your Great-Aunt wouldn't accept that the police's investigation acquitted my brother and his friends; Because it was Black officers accepting the words of seven Black men, one of them the newly-minted Mayor's son, over a scared, battered child's,' Mom gave a feral grin.‘Yeah, you racist bitch,' Dominique seethed.‘Theo believed me. Aunt Matilda and Theo both believed me and not your chick-shit police force cover-up,' Mom kept smiling though there was not mirth behind it. ‘Theo made damn sure the guilty paid.'‘He damn near beat four grown men to death,' Dom grumbled. ‘One of them was my brother.'‘Vlad, Theo took a fileting knife and a crowbar with him when he rode his bicycle out and hunted those scumbags down,' Mom explained while staring at my host. ‘He found four of them together. He put all four in the hospital.'‘He ended up in the hospital as well,' Mom added, ‘if that makes you feel better.'‘Is that why Uncle Theo ended up in military school?' I inquired.‘He got off lucky,' Dom bristled. ‘Leon; and Roscoe Sumner never left the damn hospital, Bitch.' She turned on me. ‘Rufus never did see out of his left eye again and Martin Cutler still has to walk with leg braces and a cane.'Uncle Theo and Mom; that explained a great deal about her and her twin's relationship. I knew Mom had once broken into his military school/prison to see him. I also knew now that Mom hadn't lied to me; this vendetta was with this entire sick town, not blanket racism on her part.Black individuals in this town had raped her and other Blacks had covered it up. Theo had avenged her and paid for that with five years of his freedom. Had the Kingston's Black police force simply pursued a proper course of justice, then those seven men would have gotten what the law allowed; and be out of jail by now.Maybe that would have helped Gayle Fonteneau's emotional wounds heal. That didn't happen though. That injustice explained why Mom had initially run away from Dad. She'd suffered at the hands of law enforcement and she carried that distrust and disgust with her into her first meeting with Dad.That had to be some awkward emotional gymnastics on her part.‘Oh, come on now,' Mom chortled. ‘Leon is in a nice assisted-care living facility and Roscoe is in a coma just down the hall from him.'‘What happened to Le; your brother, Mrs. Malik?' I asked.‘According to the reconstructive specialist in Austin he was hit 27 times with a crowbar, that's what happened,' she spat at my Mother. ‘Even now his face doesn't look right and he's one step above a vegetable.'‘You took Aunt Matilda's hush money,' Mom gloated. ‘You all did.'‘That doesn't mean your brother wasn't a psycho, racist bastard,' Dom shot back.‘Bullshit, Dominique. Your Daddy made the town accept Aunt Mattie's deal because she was bringing in the Arkansas State Police (ASP) to investigate Theo's defense claims and that would have fried the whole lot of you,' Mom ignored Dom's snit. Seeing my disbelief, she told me, ‘Back in 1986, the ASP had its fair share of White racists.'‘Had those seven not been guilty as sin; ‘ she glared at the Mayor, ‘maybe Theo wouldn't have gone Rambo on this burgh.'‘Enough!' I intervened. ‘This is not helping us with the problem at hand. Right now, all Mikhail and I are worried about is whether Mr. Malik is going to come home tonight pissed off, drunk off his ass, or both.'‘Why should you care?' Madame Mayor turned my way. Mom started laughing which only made the woman angrier.‘Because unlike you, me and most of this town, my boys are decent individuals who actually give a crap about strangers, regardless of their melatonin levels,' she snorted. She made eye contact with Mrs. Malik.‘Don't blame me,' Mom chuckled. ‘I would be much happier of your shiftless shit of a husband came back and beat the fuck out of you and your daughter. To me, that would be poetic justice for what your father let him get away with.'‘No happening, Mom,' I declared. ‘Mikhail and I are eighteen now so you can't make us go home. If he's really a threat; ‘‘And you can't trust the police,' Mom sneered at Dom. ‘Your police force, Dominique.'‘You are one twisted cock-whore,' Dom riposted.‘Seven young men assaulted me,' Mom snarled. ‘Three weren't around when Theo caught up with the other four. ‘Charles Baker was one of them. The other was Demetrius Quinterre. These days he is the Chief of Police.'‘Charles Baker is Chinedu Malik now?' I requested.‘Yeah,' Mom beamed hostility Mamma Malik's way. ‘The fall after 'it' happened, Charles went to Arkansas State on a football scholarship and changed his name to something more 'African'. If he thinks it made it so that Theo couldn't find him, he's sorely mistaken.'‘Where is your crazy brother anyway?'‘Which one?' Mom snorted. ‘I've got a few.'‘Theo, you crazy cunt.'‘He joined the US Army straight out of the academy. He ended up in Ranger School then the Green Beret,' Mom updated her. ‘Now he's a contract killer for God-knows who. You, the FBI and the US military all are curious about his whereabouts.'‘That's; ‘ Dominique looked at me. What can I say? I have an honest face. ‘Do you believe that?' she asked me.‘Madame Mayor, I've talked to the men from Fort Bragg who have come calling. How to put this; Uncle Theo is exceedingly eccentric; beyond what Mom is.'In a normal situation, this would be when the concerned wife asked if her husband was in danger from my lunatic uncle. Not Mrs. Malik. Hell, a martyred husband killed by a violent racist would be a big boost to her career. It would also remove any chance of her hubby blowing up the situation with Riley, thus Riley's Sugar-Daddy. I could almost see the cold, calculating wheels turning behind her eyes.‘That's hardly encouraging. Fine; Gayle, you can get out. Vlad, I'm going to make some phone calls. Why don't you see what your brother has gotten up to,' the Mayor commanded. Mom shot me a wink when Mrs. Malik pulled out her phone.‘Bring home the pot and basket when you leave,' she advised me. She took my arm and pulled me to the door.‘You have your toiletries and fresh clothes in the bag (the big, brown paper one she'd arrived with). Then, as she hugged me, she shoved something into my front, left pocket. That weekend with the Vegas hookers paid off, I recalled the crinkly sound condom wrappers make. ‘For Mikhail,' she whispered. He was being given her 'okay' to any sexual missteps that might happen if we weren't sent straight home.I imagined most teenage boys would be thrilled to have their mothers handing them some condoms and silently wishing them luck. Not me. This was some fucked-up shit Mikhail, Alexander and I had stepped into. Mom turned without further advice and went to Dad's black '2012 F-150' pick-up truck. I closed the door, then went looking for the ladies.Dominique had taken Riley into the living room. The younger woman was sitting contritely on the sofa while the Mayor quietly brow-beat whomever was on the other end of that phone conversation. I spared them a look, knew I wasn't needed, or wanted, so I went for the stairs.‘Taliyah, Mikhail, Dinner's here,' I called up. I remained at the bottom of the stairs until Mikhail showed himself.‘Was that Mom?' he calmly inquired.‘Yeah. She's gone now,' I gave a wry grin. ‘It is safe you two to come down.' A few seconds later, Taliyah appeared.‘What is it?' she was referring to dinner.‘Whatever Kamika cooked for us,' I replied. She shrugged, clearly upset with the past few minutes of her life. She still came down. She'd missed lunch unless you counted cum swallowed, then had cheerleader workouts, horse-riding and a sex-session with my brother. Mikhail was perpetually hungry as was the norm for growing boys our age and metabolisms. The remarkable thing was her reaction to Mikhail and his blasé attitude. He wasn't walking on eggshells, as Alexander would have, or being sympathetic, like me. Mikhail was being Mikhail; Taliyah's problems weren't his concern so he wasn't intruding. If she wanted some emotional input from him, she'd have to do the 'reaching out'.We doled out portions. Taliyah started with three bowls (for the host of baby-back pork ribs) and plates for the potatoes, carrots and string beans. I motioned for two more. She mentally debated my request before complying. Kamika must have packed a family of eight. There was plenty to spare. After the meal was apportioned, I took two plates and a glass of Pomegranate Juice (Taliyah poured for her Mom) and a glass of lemonade for Riley. I juggled the lot as I traipsed into the living room. The conversation stopped when I appeared. I didn't engage either with eye contact, though I could tell Dominique resented me serving dinner to her guest. I retreated with the same grace I'd exhibited entering. The two high-schoolers had attacked the ribs with gusto.‘Hmm; these are some damn fine ribs,' Taliyah waved a freshly-cleaned bone my way. ‘No wonder the men in your family are so damn huge.' Right as the words tumbled out of her mouth, she shot Mikhail a dirty look, daring him to make a snide aside about the size of his cock. Mikhail didn't take the bait.‘Give Kamika a call around noon-time. She'll add a place-setting for you at the dinner table,' he replied after vigorously sucking the meat off his fourth victim. That was the opposite of what she expected a man, a Black man, to say. She'd never had a possibly sexually suggestive chat with a White guy.‘The food's not so good I'd want to spend time with you,' she poked him.‘I'm not hot to re-experience your she-devil bitchiness either, Taliyah,' he teased her. ‘I've got to accept that Brandy's going to keep putting a sappy smile on Vlad's face and that suggests they'll crawl out of bed long enough to get some food.'‘We are never going to have sex again,' she wacked his hand with a fresh rib, leaving a saucy mark.Mikhail licked the sweet substance off while keeping eye contact with the girl. She refused to back down from his provocation. My brother responded by tenderly poking her lips with a fresh rib. She kept her mouth closed yet couldn't keep the smile from her face. She countered by presented piece of meat in front of him. Mikhail caught the offering in his teeth and shook it hungrily. Now I felt like the one who should tell them to get a room. The two began making messes of each other's faces with sloppy feedings of one another before including me in the game. It was so engrossing, we three missed Mrs. Malik coming into the kitchen and catching us at play.‘Taliyah, what, are, you, doing?' her mother clipped off each world.‘I'm keeping the White boys quiet,' the daughter thought quickly on her feet.‘Oh, that's what you call it,' Dominique's eyebrow arched. ‘It looks more like your flirting with them both.'‘What!' Taliyah squalled. ‘I hate Mikhail; Vlad's okay. He treats Brandy like she matters, not the way Darius does. He treats her like a cum dumpster.'‘I thought you wanted to be with Darius?' Dom studied her daughter intently.‘Well; I've changed my mind. His whole attitude; the 'I'm a football stud' is getting too pricey for my tastes,' she clarified. ‘Rashaan has his head so far up Darius' ass that's stopped being funny too.'‘Taliyah, if you stop dating Rashaan, you won't be popular,' mom protested.‘Listen to your mother,' Mikhail agreed. ‘Look how well hooking up with a football star worked out for her.' Waves of furious emotions radiated from mom. Taliyah's reaction was far more direct.‘You bastard!' Taliyah swore before she punched him in the upper arm. She was starting to cry.Chine may have been a raging prick to Samsonov eyes, but he was Taliyah's Daddy.‘Fuck,' he exaggerated. ‘What makes you think; ow,' he recoiled as she began to rain blows down on his upper arm and chest. Tears started to stream down her face as she pummeled my brother who took his beating like a champ.‘You are such a; a; ‘ she stammered.‘Neanderthal?' he volunteered. Two more blows were her response then her attacks lost strength and direction. Mikhail wrapped her up in his arms as she sobbed into the crux of his arm and chest.‘Feel free to hate me as much as you need to,' he held her tight. ‘I'm not that fond of you either.' He kept her close for another minute.‘I'll take her upstairs,' Mikhail told Dominique. He kept an arm around her shoulders to aid her direction and off they went. The Mayor looked my way.‘I don't know what's up with that,' I shrugged. ‘Mikhail really is a jerk most of the time. Heck, he's the biggest bastard of the three of us; the most like Mom's dark side, so I'm not sure what he's doing being nice to your daughter.'‘If he does something to her,' she threatened me. Her eyes went past me to Riley who had come to the open doorway. ‘Don't you start thinking you can be leaving,' she aimed her prodigies' way. ‘I'm not done with you.'‘Besides, he's still out there,' I meant Mr. Malik. ‘He's likely to do something irrational that both of you will regret.'‘Why should you care? You are a Fonteneau,' the Mayor grumbled in an accusatory voice.‘I'm not sure,' I shrugged. ‘I trust my Mom a lot more than I believe your version of events. From what I know of Uncle Theo, if he wasn't sure justice had been done, he'd have come back here already.'‘The fact you are choosing to revisit this tragedy now makes me wonder when I'll see him again,' I tacked on.‘Ah, could I have some more of those ribs?' Riley extended her plate. She needed to finish her veggies.‘All that pork is going straight to those fat hips and big ass, Girl,' the Mayor cruelly teased her.Riley was embarrassed. I stood up from the kitchen table, took Riley's plate, and filled it with the portions of meat Taliyah and Mikhail had left behind. That seemed to mollify her to the point she felt good enough to walk, with her plate, back to the living room.‘You shouldn't be nice to her,' the Mayor cautioned me. ‘She's just another whore for Black Cock. Another White girl freak beneath the sheets.'That the Mayor was likely one as well wasn't something I felt I should bring up at the moment. Instead of arguing, I began to clean up the kitchen, putting the leftovers in Tupperware containers, washing the plates and then the pot and food containers. All the while, Dominique watched me work.‘I thought you had domestic help,' she said condescending tone.‘A) any kind of help is something new to us boys and Dad. B) Mom insists we all pitch in and help out. That means washing cookware and plates after meals, haul fertilizer and taking away yard debris and cleaning our rooms. We have chores.'‘That defeats the purpose of having servants,' she insisted.‘That house is huge, the 'help' could use the help, chores remind us we all need to work together and it teaches us not to take people for granted,' I repeated my Mom's words from our first day in the house.‘Your clan used to be such snobs, looking down on all us Black folks.'‘However the Fonteneau acted was before our time, Madam Mayor; ‘‘Call me Dominique, or Mrs. Malik in my home, Vladimir. You are Vladimir, right?' she said.‘Yes Dominique, I'm Vlad, the middle one. Alexander is oldest, so he's the most mature, I'm the middle triplet, so I'm the best mix of Mom and Dad, and Mikhail is the youngest so he's always out to prove himself.'‘Fascinating,' she responded drolly. ‘Stay out of the way while I deal with Riley. I'll get her squared away then deal with you and your brother.' With that, she walked off to give Riley another huge piece of her mind, rage and frustration. As I was putting up the pot to dry, the doorbell rang. I heard Mamma Malik's heels click on the marble floors as she stormed over to the door.‘Demetrius, what are you doing here?' I heard he say from the door.‘I heard you were having some problem with those Samsonov boys,' he announced. ‘I'm here to make sure everything is okay.'‘You mean my worthless, cheating husband sent you over to make them leave,' she groused.‘He might have indicated they were causing you problems,' the Police Chief allowed. ‘Let me pour those Cornfeds into their car and send them home.'‘No,' Dominique's voice cracked the whip of authority. ‘He is out whoring and drinking and that means he ain't coming home tonight; end of story.'‘I'll leave Oliver with a patrol car watching your place if that is the case,' he tried to mollify her.‘On really,' she mocked him. ‘You, Chinedu and Oliver are all drinking buddies. You and your cronies aren't going to keep my husband's drunk ass from darkening my doorway. You let Chine know he's not welcome here tonight.'‘Dom, you are being unreasonable,' the cop leader cooed. I didn't have to imagine him touching her. The Kingston cops were far too touchy-feely with women.‘Don't you touch me, you poltroon,' she blasted him. I wondered if he even knew what a poltroon was. He knew it was an insult though.‘Listen up, Dominique,' his voice grew low and threatening. That was my cue.‘Madam Mayor, is everything okay?' I stepped into the hallway. Demetrius' eyes latched onto me before turning his sneer the Mayor's way.‘Why, don't he look cozy,' he accused Dominique.‘Buddy,' I wasn't going to call him an 'officer', or 'Chief', ‘Mom just enlightened me to what you and Chine did to her all those years ago. Statute of Limitations may have passed, but don't you think the Samsonov's consider justice to be done.'‘I also know that any crime involving you and a Deputy's son automatically brings in the Arkansas State Police. Cross that portal and you cease being a concerned police officer and become a home invader,' I channeled my father and all his kin going back a dozen generations.‘How about I arrest you for trespassing?' he want for his 'bracelets' while his right hand rested on the ass of his piece.‘My house, Demetrius and I've invited him and his brother in. Believe me, Dem, if you don't hot-foot it off my property then my next call Will be to the State Police reporting You for criminal trespass,' she growled at the cop.‘So, you've become an Oreo?' he mocked her. ‘I can't wait to hear what the town council has to say about that.'‘Consider they are the same crowd who invited Dr. Pierre O'Rourke Jean-Georges to be our Principle for the next ten months; ‘ I began my counter-mock.‘Five years,' the Mayor glowered at the Chief. ‘The school board; which you are on, Demetrius; gave that freakazoid a five year contract.'

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   John Barth (1930-2024), who died on April 2, 2024 at the age of 93, was America's leading writer of metafictional and post-modern fiction. This interview was conducted by Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff on November 12, 2001 in the KPFA studios, while on the book tour for the novel Coming Soon. John Barth began to receive notice for his two earliest novels, The Floating Opera and End of the Road in the late 1950s, but burst on the scene with his epic comic novel about colonial life in Maryland, The Sot-Weed Factor, and his allegory of the Cold War, set on a university campus, Giles Goat-Boy. His short story collection, Lost in the Funhouse and novella collection Chimera cemented his reputation as a writer of meta-fiction, as the stories zoom back on themselves and on the writing of those stories. From Wikipedia: “In his epistolary novel LETTERS (1979), Barth corresponds with characters from his other books. Later novels such as The Tidewater Tales (1987) and The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor (1991) continue in the metafictional vein, using writers as protagonists who interact with their own and other stories in elaborate ways. His 1994 Once Upon a Time: A Floating Opera casts Barth himself as the protagonist who on a sailing trip encounters characters and situations from previous works.” After the 2001 interview, he continued to work in the same vein with a triptych of novellas, Where Three Roads Meet in 2005, interrelated short stories set in a retirement community, The Development: Nine Stories in 2008, and Every Third Thought: A Novel in Five Seasons in 2011. A, book of collected stories was released in 2015 and Postscripts (or Just Desserts): Some Final Scribbling came out in 2022. This interview was both the last interview conducted with Richard Lupoff as co-host, and the final interview recorded and edited on analog tape. This program was digitized and edited in July 2024 by Richard Wolinsky, and is heard in full for the first time.   Lorrie Moore is a celebrated short story writer and novelist. In this excerpt from an interview recorded April 8, 2014 while on tour for her collection, Bark, she discusses her writing and research process. Collaboration and networking are instrumental in whatever success I enjoyed in my former corporate work life and now in my post career volunteer world.  Nancy LaBerge of Calgary's “Backyard Betties” was introduced to me via email by Linda Wilson, a former radio colleague….giving me the heads up Nancy and her group would be coming to Kansas City for the 2024 Folk Alliance International Conference.  Might there be any broadcast or performance opportunities for the Backyard Betties on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show?  Of course.  I soon came to know that Nancy, through her affiliation with the Calgary Songsmiths, had already come into my orbit through a songwriting collaboration exercise with our local Heartland Song Network members borne from a prior year's introduction at Folk Alliance. Joining Nancy LaBerge in three-part harmonies are Pip Hazel and Sarah Nielson on percussion with Mark Cassano on guitar.  The Backyard Betties are exceptionally talented with a strong commitment to connecting with their audiences through songs of love, life and loss while fostering the growth of emerging songwriters in their community.  Colin Cutler, an Army Vet, is a Greensboro, North Carolina-based singer-songwriter, folk musician, poet, and storyteller toting a banjo and guitar. Whether solo or with his band, Hot Pepper Jam, he is a wide-ranging performer whose musical roots draw from the breadth of American folk music—from Appalachian oldtime to blues to gospel to country to rock'n'roll—to form what No Depression has described as “one magnificent tapestry of roots music.”. In the course of curating a private showcase for a Folk Alliance International Conference, it becomes quite daunting to make decisions with so very many talented artists making submissions.  Colin Cutler made the decision easier for me to choose him when his bio revealed his latest work “Tarwater” was based upon the work of Georgia author Flannery O'Connor.  That was enough of a hook to send me down the rabbit hole of his background and discography.  Enjoy my conversations with and in studio performance by Backyard Betties and Colin Cutler.

This week I spiraled out with playwright, novelist and television writer Jen Silverman (We Play Ourselves, The Roommate, Collective Rage: A Play In 5 Betties.)  We talked the protected joy in watching others rather than being watched, dared to investigate the world of trigger & content warnings, and even processed some shame-filled moments in our first meeting as the ex-partner and current partner of the SAME PERSON.  We also chat about social media and Twitter in particular, and I must note that this was recorded BEFORE the notorious Elon Musk takeover...which is why that element may feel glaringly absent from the conversation. Plus, Jen shares an excruciating shame story about scalding herself with boiling water and enduring a second-degree burn while in rehearsal for her play, all while trying to exist like absolutely nothing is happening.   Follow Jen on Instagram @this_panda_is_sad (and you really should, because Jen actually draws sad pandas) and Twitter @_Jen_Silverman.  And you can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok @elykreimendahl, and the pod on Twitter and Instagram @podshamespiral, where I'm regularly posting fun video clips of especially juicy or hilarious moments from the episodes.  Audio Engineer/Editor: Sarah Gabrielli (check out her amazing podcast about the last lesbian bars in America @cruisingpod on Instagram and TikTok and listen here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cruising-a-lesbian-bar-road-trip/id1585850925Original Music: Shadwick Wilde, Instagram and Twitter: @shadwickwildeCover Art: Cassidy Kulhanek, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok: @heavenlygrandpaNew episodes every Tuesday! We're working on getting more showtimes cause I know everyone on. Wants more NFT coverage. So if you guys would like fencing to add more NFT shows, go ahead and hit one in the chat and go ahead and smash that like as well.So we can get started up. Let me go ahead and bring on my cohost mass mass. What's going on with. Yo what's going on, Chris? How you doing today, man? Doing great. I mean another exciting week, right? There's so much always going on in NFT lay on there's mints every day there's events, every day. There's, you know, uh, new NFT drops for existing products. There's new roadmaps put out. There's just so much going on out there. Absolutely. Well, first of all, the shout out to the chat, I'm looking at it right now. It looks like we have some. Does he dragon, uh, owners in there. So shout out, you know, thumbs up really quick. Let's get the show going. Uh, so shout out to them.We have some amazing headlines to get to today and yeah. Yeah. We're going to have to dive into dragons in a minute. Uh, it looks like that community is showing up in full force today, uh, mass it's Tuesday. So one of the first things we like to do is talk about the last week, right? So I want to talk about last week's top 10 in sales volume real quick. No surprise Axion infinity and leading the way again for the third straight week sales of 109.0 million. Then we had crypto punks. Number two, art blocks. Number three, again, no big surprises. The big surprise was cup cats, right up cats coming in fourth place, 16.9 mil. Sales volume of 3300%. Um, that was the big gainer and then cool cats at five board apes at six mute Napes at seven and then the other big gainer, lazy lions that eighth lazy lions up 36%.They did have a NFT drop that we'll talk about in a minute. So they did see some heavy volume from that. And then mass, I went and I looked past the top 10 and the other big surprise. Was NBA top shot. They had sales value of 6.8 million last week up 91.8%. Um, I think they were 14th place. So again, not in the top 10, but a nice increase. That was a project we highlighted last week that it was gaining some more, uh, you know, steam getting back up and running. NBA, top shots forth all time with sales volume of 720 million. So nothing to sneeze at here. That's our top 10, uh, mass let's get into some, uh, recent mints and events. Uh, tell me about these galactic apes.Yeah, so we had a stealth drop this weekend, galactic apes. They dropped no marketing. They shut down their discord. They didn't post anything on Twitter. Uh, they have a Genesis drop, which is around a hundred pieces. They launched before board apes. And I think the floor for those was around 15. I think it's definitely much higher now.So there was some sort of substance there, but they dropped 10,000 pieces. I think it was it. What? Saturday night they sold. Yeah. Sold out in five minutes and then just the hype after that has been absolutely insane. I'm a big fan of the art. If you look at them, they're pretty cool. Um, yeah, so the floor is around one eighth right now.And you know, there's some sort of gamification they're doing where you have to collect, you know, the apes, they have three different types of IOPS. They have gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees. You got to collect all three to play the game. Which we're going to see soon what they mean by that. But a lot of hype here. Were you able to meet Chris or have you followed up with them? I followed this project. I wasn't able to mint. Um, the timing just didn't work out with that contract, but I mean that this artwork looks great. And I like the fact that there is three different classes, you know? Having that gamification, you know, wanting people to collect all three or have more than one ape, I think could provide, you know, some additional value.Um, this is a project where, you know, it's one east now and I think the, the flipping's done. And I think this one could have, you know, some long-term lasting value. So I'm definitely looking at it, you know, as more of a long-term play here. Uh, I think the value is going to increase. Absolutely. Yeah. And then I know something big happened yesterday.Do you want to tell us what that was? As far as we had a big slab? Ah, changes. Yeah. I mean, we always talk about celebrities on the show. Again, celebrities don't make or break a project, but when you get a big name to attach themselves to your project, especially if it's as well known as Shaquille O'Neal Shaq himself.15.5 million followers on Twitter and he changed his profile picture to a creature creature world, a well-known, uh, NFT project and mass, no surprise here in the last 24 hours, creature sales $6.2 million. Number four in sales value on cryptos Liam and sales value of 1000. 144%. That is the shack of fact. And this one's got some other big names in that too. I think Gary V owned some, um, you know, and some other big celebrities. So this isn't a first one. The floor price is 2.35. Now on these, um, I think it was a well under two before, more like closer to one. Um, I mean, and these sales just took off yesterday.I mean, this is kind of a different one, right? We, we haven't seen as much artwork like this, so I, I like it. And Shaq didn't really make an announcement. Right. He just changed his profile picture so that there's a chance he could put out a tweet or say something about creature and that could, uh, bring even more value. What do you think? Yeah, that's the crazy part, right? He didn't make an announcement. He didn't say anything. He just changed his profile. And that's it. And you know, and that's so crazy that that created this wave of FOMO, you know, big whales started buying after that and the price shot up. I forget what it was at before, but it's kind of substantially.Um, so yeah, if he does shout out, we don't know if there's a collaboration. We don't know anything. We don't know if he's just a fan. If it was paid, we don't know anything at all. So it's going to be interesting to watch for the next couple of days. I liked the art, uh, creatures, you know, th I think it's different.I think it's definitely blue chip material. So we'll see where that. Um, another big mint that happened yesterday. So it seems like we're in the cycle of cute profile pictures now. Right? So a lot of these cute profile picture NFTs. Going through the moon here. And we had a big one yesterday, winter bears.Uh, were you able to meet those Chris? You know, I wasn't, I'm sad to say that I was actually on a call with a team member here at Benzinga. I saw the activity picking up and by the time I got off the phone, these things had already sold out gas was running crazy, but I mean, it shouldn't come as that big of a surprise, right.Once people saw this, this cute profile that is, you know, the, the hot play right. And look at that. I mean, a 0.2 floor, I think it hit almost 0.3 yesterday. Um, you know, and these were cheap to mint, right? So this was a, a nice project for anyone who was able to, uh, to catch that move there. Exactly. And it seems like, you know what it is, it's a FOMO from cool cats, you know, these all kind of resemble or seem inspired by cool cats.Cool cats at ten eight floor this weekend, there was a big celebration. It was trending on Twitter. So it's no surprise that people are priced out of that. They're trying to find, you know, projects that are cute, like this, and you know, can build community. So community is a big part. Plus the cute profile picture.Definitely. So then the next project I'm scared to talk about. Cause the chat might start going crazy, but we have, we have dizzy dragons. So dizzy dragons, they announced an update to their roadmap. Right? We are the roadmap after all. That's one of the things we still look at, you know, on these projects. So I remember watching this project when it was like 0.0 3.04.They did a fusion where you could merge together to have your dragons sweats, a deflationary project. Right? So there's 6,000 of them right now. The floor is 0.19, and they're actually still fusing through, uh, Thursday the 30th. So that's going to be the last day that you can fuse under the current road. And then they announced that they're expanding that busy universe and lower with a new collection. So if you own a fuse dragon, you will get a free claim to the new collection. So right now, if you were to buy two dresses, Fuse them together. You're going to get a free mint on that next project, a mass, you know how much I like, you know, the, the roadmaps and I like buying into these projects where you get a new NFT out of owning.I'm a big fan of that reward system. I think it provides good value. So here you have two things, right? You have deflationary, there's going to be less dragons out. To getting a new claim to me, that's a win-win. So, uh, I I've been looking at these dragons, hopefully I'm not driving the price up too much right now talking about them.Cause, uh, this is what I, my watch list. What do you think mass? Yeah, so I'm a big fan of deflationary, uh, you know, roadmaps. I like to see less supply or just, you know, ways to reward early community members. And you know, we're still so early in that of T world that doing this, you know, as the projects take on, you know, as more people join. There's less supply, more demand your award people, that huddles. So I love it. And I liked the art. It's pretty cool. Yeah. I'd love the art and it sounds like maybe we need to have the, the dizzy dragons team come on a future show and tell us more about the roadmap in this artwork. So if you're out there, hit us up on Twitter, let us know, and we, we can get Drizzy, uh, you know, with everyone on this.Let's do it. Um, so speaking of, you know, drops, we have not, uh, not fungible bones. You've seen those Chris. I have, they were kind of cool look and right. Cause they were kind of unique. Um, you know, something I hadn't seen yet, um, you know, the skeleton. So we also have a bit of a Halloween theme and mass, these things got hot in a hurry. This is a 10,000 NFT project. The floor is point to, um, you know, this was a cheaper project to begin with that people just said, no, I, I, this one might've been free. This one just shot up in a hurry. And it got a ton of attention. Exactly. And just, yeah, like you said, Halloween's coming up. This seems like a perfect Halloween, like huddle play.Look at that 180 7 eat. That's crazy. Yeah, we might, we might have to do a show on, uh, some Halloween NFTs cause man, I I've been lucky. I I've been thinking, Hey, what's going to be the next, uh, NFTs that everyone, you know, circles around for, for Halloween. We're already seeing some move up. Uh, but I think there's a couple more that could be going. So, uh, stay tuned for that. A future show here. Um, maths, we've got, uh, another. You know, well-known project, lazy lion. So lazy lions, the mint price was 0.05. They sold out in less than five hours. And these things, they recently dropped a bungalows, which were free for all holders minus the cost of gas. Um, and look at that floor price, the floor price to two on these now.I mean, and you heard me say 0.05 to mint that I've seen lots of people with this. I'll picture, which again, that's part of the, that's part of the, you know, the big, uh, you know, bull case for NFTs, right? With some of these ones that are animals. They're cute. They do well as a PFP, as you want to see a lot of people that have them as their PFP.Yes. I've seen a lot of lions out there and I think they look cool. Right? I mean, great artwork. You've got some different, uh, traits there. I mean, the, the cigarettes, the different hair color, you got hats on some, I mean, we got the beanie hat there and then the bungalows right there. I mean, that's kind of cool.Right? Where's your lion going to live? You get a free mint of a bungalow for your, for your lion to, uh, to live at. So a nice reward again for the. Yeah, that's a great point, you know, and I've the lays line community. I see them everywhere. You know, like you said, profile pictures. I see so many of those on Twitter, on divert. And to me, that's a strong sign of the community. So that's really cool to see.Awesome. Well, I, I, I know we've got one that is on referable. Let's save that one for when we get into our interview. Mazza art blocks. We talked about it last week, right? The Cromey squiggles. Did you happen to see that there was another big sale for the Cromey squiggles? Yeah, there was a big sale. I think it was me crummy squiggle 4 6, 9, 7 for 945 Eve, which is around 2.8 million.Uh, there's been big sales in the last week or so, which is interesting. Cause you know, art blocks has, you know, there was a slight dip in the last couple of weeks. So it's interesting to see, you know, the squiggles going for these all times. I mean, those things just continue to, you know, set records and, you know, $2.8 million for a crummy squiggle that that is insane. And art blacks continues to do more and more drops a mass. How about alpha Betty? Right. We had alpha Betty team on not too long ago. And we saw that floor price rise over the past couple of days. We did see some well-known traders and discords, you know, circle around this, but also. Alpha Betty announced a Dow, right? So current and future owners of alpha-beta will own part of the Betty Dow where they will get 2% of secondary sales. And then that Dow also owns 132. 29 coloring books, a mutant eight yacht club, five east and another one east in other NFTs. Uh, you can see some of them in that picture there, um, mass, I'm a big fan of the Dow, uh, component too.So what do you think of this? Uh, alpha-beta news. Yeah, we liked the Betties and shout out to the team. We had them on a couple of weeks ago, such a great team, and to see them, you know, bring the doubt to life is pretty cool. Yeah. I mean, I love the work. I think it's a great longterm play. They've been around for some time in the NFT world. So seeing them have a nice bounce back and trending again. And then mass, have you ever heard of these, uh, the, the bras, this is on rare trouble. Um, Alyssa, if we can get that artwork up, this is an interesting one, right? So we're going to talk to Alex from repairable and I hadn't heard of this project, but I recently found it.I like the artwork. What do you, what do you think of that matters? I mean, these are kind of cool looking. Yeah, they are, uh, the bras. Let me see, I'm looking at them now. Let's see. Yeah, they're pretty cool. Yeah. So we're going to have to do more research in that, or maybe get this team, get this team on. I mean, I haven't seen anything, you know, exactly like this, which I'm always a fan of, you know, uniqueness, something different. And again, you can find these on referable looks like they are auctioning off right now. Um, you know, so, uh, We do have an interview to get to. So I'm super excited. Uh, we get to talk to Alex niqab, the head of product, and co-founder from rare trouble. So in the south further ado, let's bring on Alex, Alex, welcome to the roadmap. How are you doing? I'm doing great. Thank you guys for hearing me today. I'm so excited. Yeah, we're excited to hear more about referable. Of course, referable is a well-known NFT platform. Uh, but we want to dive into, to some of the specifics, but first off, Alex, can you just tell viewers who may not be familiar with referable? You know, what is rare ball? Variable is all about creating, selling your own NFTs. So we started two years ago as the platform where anyone could create an MTS back then that was a luxury. Uh, every platform was closed out. To pass the B VIP, uh, invite system, get yourself verified, button variable, like everyone was able.So it's like everyone welcome NFT marketplace. And we are really into the yellow and fun and playful stuff. I guess this, this part of, of the world, uh, being, being nice design UI UX is what excites us a lot in the NFC space. Perfect. Well, uh, you know, we talk a lot about big NFT projects, um, you know, celebrities or well-known projects that launched they mint strong secondary sales. Can you tell us about some of the most successful projects that have launched on. Yeah, uh, Justin, this weekend, we had the large drop by . Uh, you can find it in the, uh, in the top collection section, uh, and the hot collection section, uh, they met 700,000, uh, just out of the five or 600. So that basically was like 30.Is there item in the auction? Uh, you can see them all over the world is the famous boys collection, uh, all over the Twitter. Uh, like a lot of, a lot of guys in Twitter have that on their avatar. I think STANY from RV. The protocol, the defy protocol has one on his avatar, so pretty famous one. Uh, and also the previous ones, a big one, probably.No. He ate a person who launched the nuts 10 K, but 8,888 K and T eight collection, uh, of his devils. So he is like long time variable user. He made several consecutive drops of a hundred, 150,000 doors, uh, over and over again with love him so much. I own one. Awesome. Well, we do know that there are, you know, uh, some other NFP platforms out there.I won't name any, but Alex, can you tell us, you know, how is referable different than some of your competitors out? Yeah. So first of all, verbal was always really appealing to the creators. So we have an extended minting functionality. You can mint NFTs with images, gifs, MP3, MP4. She cannot unlock about content. You can, you can check the arbitrary Royal. So like 50%, 30%, the way you want build that into your item and, uh, obviously customize your profile. So it of these was like, uh, get to the leaderboard. It always was about the creator himself. Follow a lot of social aspect on the platform and you have the whole following feed where only the items from the people who follow are displayed. So we love this, this social aspect. Love that. So I have a question for you as far as target audience and customers a little bit more into it. Um, you know, so how do you guys go about finding your ideal customer or target audience as of now considering, you know, all those other NFT platforms are popping up and you guys have been around for a while, which is great.Yeah. We've been around for awhile. Uh, I think our best, our best strategies to be in community. Uh, we are known as community owned and community operated platform. We launched a governance token a year ago, but that's another story, but basically, uh, it's just always be on the spotlight on Twitter. We do have a BD guy, guys that are on the lookout for everyone for big drops, the French Montana team, uh, recently, uh, Sold out there. They're physical sneakers and there are some digital left. You can check those out. Um, Um, our, our target audience is basically the more consumer-based the more mainstream audience, biggest, uh, we design variable to be simple, to be easy to use and fun. And that's why we're looking for people who just want to do something fun for their audience. So not to be like highly transactional, um, but more like cultural spectrum. Love that. And that's a great point. You actually talked about my next question, which was the governance token. So a variable has a governance governance token called Rory. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? Yeah. So we'll launch that.Uh, again, we, we started as the most open platform and basically that was another step in becoming even more open. So we'll launch the governance token about a year ago in July, 2020. And that was a massive success. We were amongst the first like 10 projects that launched the liquidity, uh, mining, uh, Um, but, uh, defy projects in their case, like waging mining is like I supplied capital.Uh, whereas in the NFT project, in the marketplace, uh, liquidity is the supply and demand on the marketplace. That's why. Rewarding suppliers and demanders and the marketplace. So basically buyers and sellers, and we distribute governance rights over the platform to the buyers and sellers that how you're you basically receive a cash back on every deal that you've made it where I's like from 5% to 20% on the G on the volume now, uh, at, at, at the time we started, that was a hundred percent. So basically everything was for. So that's the process of progressive decentralization of the variable of the variable project. You earn the ownership over that, and there is the Dow. Uh, we recently launched a product called. Uh, which is basically all the tech behind terrible that allows you to spin up your own NFC project, your own NXT experience much more faster than if you build that ground up.And the protocol is directly governed by the Dao completely built upon this open principles. Um, open-sourced community owned, uh, while, while bearable.com is just one of the apps on top of. So there is a buyer, but ACA system. And the very token is basically the key to that. Love that. So the goal of variable is to evolve into a full-on Dow then.Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Full on down. It's already there. It's not in yet in its best, uh, governance forum. So, uh, we do have, we do have a signaling era right now, which is basically like a multi-six snapshot voting, which has gas lists. And it's early. If you want to participate in the variable Dougie like Jordan, it's a really, never been a better time to do that.Let's go love that. Shout out now. Never a better time. We are gonna make it. Uh, Alex, uh, it was announced, uh, earlier this year when rarer BL uh, raised money that there was a partnership with dapper labs, the company behind NBA top shot. Can you give us an update on the, this partnership with dapper labs and what it means for referable?Basically, it means wearable that the flow blockchain is the next blockchain we are going to adopt, uh, the work isn't. They have a development, uh, it takes a lot of thought process to understand how do we combine two blockchains on the same path for him because they have different wallets and we need to not confuse the user with like, where, where do I go to, to get an item? And there is this, this. Big development under undergoing these days. Uh, I cannot yet say what they were going to launch, but it's, it's, it's basically a bit the next blockchain that we're going to and did that prolapse. Uh, absolutely amazing team. They have absolutely amazing blockchain. Um, now gas prices almost it's really chip, uh, really environmentally friendly.Well, the team behind cryptic curious, aversely knew how to build a blockchain for NFTs in June referable raised money in a new funding round. Can you tell us, do you know why the decision to, to raise money then? And what will it go towards? Yeah. So it's been a really fruitful year for variable in, in just January, 2021.Uh, we're braced, uh, as serious. See it from, from Coinbase ventures, going fund a and one K KX, all those, uh, all those amazing funds. And later, just like five months later, we raised another 14.2 million led by when rock and coin. So, uh, they, if it's basically the. The traction of the, of the market, uh, uh, which, which resulted in, in our understanding that we need to scale the platform. We need to scale the team. We need to, to hire a lot of, a lot of new team members and, uh, well, That always investments always go to the team members, uh, because you, you need, you need to have a lot of people to integrate new blockchains, very simply integrated credit card support. So the Moto is best. It's like, um, we're, we're going to be the best platform for mainstream. It's really easy to use supporting environmentally friendly blockchain. I'm going, multitasking, going to L tools, supporting credit cards, simplified log-in flow, all sorts of things like that are are for this. So at the time of that funding round, I saw an article that mentioned rare bull had $150 million in sales over an 18 month period. Is there any, a revenue or user metrics and figures that you can share with us to, to update viewers? Yeah. So the tutorial sales, the total sales, which are, uh, sit at the level of 212 million doors, uh, it's, it's a crazy number. I never, I never have thought that we will get out, uh, that crazy in just a couple of years.Uh, and with the 30 days, uh, numbers of, of, uh, 20 and 18 million over the past two, uh, respectfully. Um, so that's, that's pretty great. Um, again, where we're doing almost a million door per day, uh, in, in, in sales, um, and, and support a lot of creative. Perfect. So Alex, you know, we are an NFT show, but of course, Benzinga right where I am employed where a stock stock market news site.So one of the questions I have to ask, you know, is, is referable considering an IPO? Is that in the long-term plans? And maybe how close is referable to getting there? Oh, yeah. Uh, it's a really great question. Uh, we have not thought about that yet properly because obviously we have a, we have a governance token. We are moving towards a Dao. And in the same time we have a, a front-end app, which is a private company that can go public. Um, and basically the understanding of are we going public or are we going to full downside on with all the. It's unclear yet.Absolutely. So I wanted to talk to you a little bit more. Can you tell us a little bit more about the new project? Uh, the protocol. Yeah. Uh, I'm, I'm, I'm really glad that you asked. So this have been, uh, the result of basically our six months of work. Well, actually of all the two years of work, biggest, what we did is we've taken out the infrastructure behind. So the smart contracts for creating items, the smart contracts for selling and buying items, the smart contracts for royalties, uh, the tool, which is like 90% of all the code, uh, of the protocol. Tracks all the provenance, like what happened with each NFT when it was born to whom it was transferred when, and for how much that was sold, what the activity is, what are my NFT is what are the NFT insights and collection are?So this is whole like trading infrastructure. Behind variable. We, we took that and separated that into a new project, which has variable protocol. So for everyone who wants to start their own NFT project, it, it became much easier. We basically spent two years developing. Uh, our own and we know how hard that is, and that's why we, we, we made that for the community. So it's built on this open principles, open source community govern, as I mentioned. So we provide certain guarantees to the people right now. There is no, like, there is no open source indexing tool available on the market that supports all the NFTs out. So if you're building a wallet for example, and, uh, you want to show your, your customer, uh, what are the NFTs that belong to that particular wallet? You need an indexing tool that will tell you like, yeah, we know you, you can just go to blockchain and quieter. That information is like spread say in across the whole blockchain and the really, really thin layer. And we aggregate that and provide that to the. So for all the developers that want to build their project, it's, it's an awesome set of infrastructure. That's awesome, man. I love that. Can you tell us a little bit more about the revamped secondary trading? Thank you. Thank you for asking that too. So, uh, obviously in, in, in spite of this, uh, uh, 10 collections, PFP projects, uh, uh, craziness, that's going on. Uh, we, we went and revamped the whole, the whole experience of trading that collections on variable. So, uh, basically it starts, if you're a collection owner, you can go to variable, you can find that collection, you can claim ownership over that. You can set up avatar, you can set up a cover image over that. You can set up a and multiple awards. So like, let's say I want to put the 1% or community treasury.I want to put 0.5% to offset environmental impact of my collection. So set up multiple royalties and spread out the word about this collection to be traded on variable also were released the top collection section, which is now on top of the whole website, which shows you all the leader board of the.The coolest collections and, uh, we track data not only on variable, but on the whole blockchain there. So if a collection originated like 20 million, somewhere on other marketplaces, we, we, we put that data into the leaderboard. So you can find the. Leaderboard of collections on variable, you can click and collection. You can trade that collection. We, the filters by trades, uh, various types of filters, price low to high. Uh, you can now like soar this and get the floor pricing. I know that sounds basic, uh, for a lot of people. Uh, this is a available ranger at some other places, but we've been always, uh, about, we've been all this marketplace about creators, and sometimes I speak to people and they, oh, I never knew that you can trade secondary and variable at all.So I decided that they want to unpack on that you can't trade secondary and variable, and that's been an awesome experience. Love that. Yeah. So the NMT space right now, I mean, has just gone completely parabolic in the last couple months. What can variable do or what is it doing or what's going to do to, you know, kind of establish its spot. And then if T markets, you know, moving forward, Yeah. Uh, basically we stand really highly on this decentralized approach is really important. There is not many decentralized players out there. Protocol is a big play there, uh, on the marketplace layer. Uh, we are building a tool for the generator of art projects.Uh, so if you want to launch in new collection, uh, and you don't have a technical team that would help you to code or. Uh, you can approach variable and we might help you to launch this. Uh, so this, this is a nice addition to the team, but, uh, overall, along along the lines, we want to be open. We want to be decentralized and we want to be fine, fun and joyful in approaching the market.Uh, obviously going multi chain with all the new blockchains that popping up is the big part of our stress. Exactly. That's actually a great question. The salon or the car donno, any implementation of that? Any time. Uh, it's actually really interesting that you named this tool. I know Solano is hugely popular these days, just because everybody tried to scale blockchains by dividing them into shards by sharding and Solana said, no, we weren't going to do.We're going to have one just really fast and strong blockchain, uh, that, that, that played out really well for them. Uh, so Salana is, uh, in, uh, in thoughts we haven't started that, but we are really looking over this Allana and for Cardona, uh, I think it's one of the most esoteric blockchains out there. Uh, it doesn't have a lot of.The stays, they just really sparked contracts. So we haven't even approached that. The things we're looking on is flow, uh, teases polygon, uh, in polka dot. There is Moonbeam, uh, it's an EDM compatible power chain of polka dot. Uh, we're we're looking over those, uh, those changes. Awesome. Awesome. Well, Alex, I mean some great answers there. One of the questions we always like to ask here, you know, we, we try not to, to shell too many projects, but we have to ask people when they come on, what are some of your favorite projects that you own, or that you've kind of followed along the story? Um, in. Uh, it's a, it's a really good question. So I think I cover it.Some of them, uh, my, my, my probably all-time favorite is kid eight, uh, projects with DeVos. Uh, I really liked the aesthetics. It's like a bold and fun, uh, and, and the little, uh, and the little, uh, I don't, I don't have a correct for it. So. Yeah, the cure is I participated in auctions couple of times and never made it, uh, just because there was always a lot of guys who wanted that, uh, and, and were willing to fight better than me.Uh, this, this has been like absolutely amazing. I love this. So, uh, as you can see, there is not many available in the secondary sales. Everybody has got them, put them for sale like 4,000 years. Um, but you might try to get some, to get some, uh, beats. Yeah, there they are on screen. Those those look great. Uh, we've talked about kid eight before we're looking to maybe have him on the show in the future.Love this, uh, artwork and these style projects. So Alex, a great shout out. Uh, well, this was exciting, you know, I can honestly say, you know, I didn't know a ton about rare trouble, but now I think I'm up to speed. Um, I love the Dow component. Uh, I think that could be exciting for the future. So I'll be checking out referable later today.Um, so again, Team joining us on the show. Alex, sail, niqab, the head of product and co-founder of referable. Alex. Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule and joining us on the roadmap today. Thank you, Chris. And that's been exciting to be here. Awesome. We'll see you soon. Thanks Alex. All right guys, another exclusive interview here on the roadmap.I mean, mass that's exciting, right? To hear about referable and NFT platform. One of my favorite things was that he said that the platform was built based on what the creators. All about people who want to mint and create NFT projects, they support the artists, they support the creators. Um, and then also that talk at the end, right.About, you know, when you asked about, you know, Solana and some of these other platforms, I like the dapper labs integration coming soon, the flow blockchain. So some exciting times ahead. What do you think. Yeah. You know, variables interesting because like you said, it's for the creator. And that's actually, how I heard about wearable first was from an artist, you know, a very low key artists, you know, semi has worked through terrible, wanted me to check it out.Uh, so it's interesting now that NFTs have blown up, you know, gone parabolic to see, you know, these competitors and seeing what they do to differentiate, you know, Their market share in that Ft world. So arable is one of those that has been around for a while, and I'm excited to see where they go with all the Dow and the token.Definitely. Well, it looks like the chat loved the interview as well. And again, shout out to the dizzy dragons team for joining us today. Um, I also saw a fun comment from a lion owner saying maybe they should put their lion in their Disney dragon bungalow. Um, so maybe they own both projects out there.Guys it's time. There's that comment there from Michael, uh, guys, it's time to talk about some upcoming items, right? So let's talk about some future. Let's talk about some reveals that we're going to get. So if you have projects out there, you want us to look at, um, you know, again, we're not here to shell, this is not financial advice, but we love looking at projects we know or don't know, and also seeing some of the artwork. So mass I bought into a project yesterday called. Bastard penguins. Right? So bastard penguins. I got some of these and they are going to reveal two night at 8:00 PM Eastern time, I believe. Uh, are you in this project and what do you think about. Yeah, I'm into these as well. Um, you know, it's cute profile picture season, so it looks like, you know, all the cute profile pictures are mooning. So definitely I mentioned a couple of these. I will be keeping up with the reveal. I do like how they look, you know, they're, they're pretty cute. They're pretty, uh, profile pic worthy. So yes, I will be tuning them for these. What are you hoping for any traits? Any specifics there? I like that beanie hat. The Spiderman looking one and a Bart Simpson looking one that I had my eye on, but again, and then also mass.So yeah, go ahead and answer that. And then we gotta talk about their, uh, their giveaway. So what traits are you looking for? Like the power ranger, one man, one shirt. My kids love Powerade, dude. I would love that. Yeah. Speaking to the giveaway. Yeah. Tell us a little bit, a little bit more about that. Yeah. So, I mean, we've talked about projects, right? That do you know giveaways? We had secret society, a whales talk, right where they gave away a board. So bastard penguins will be giving away some, some money, right? Cash, money to a couple of winners. And then also a Tesla. They are giving away a Tesla to one bastard penguin owner. They took their snapshot earlier today.I believe so mass, you have the chance to win a Tesla just for getting one of these cute penguins. So fingers crossed. But if I, if I win that Tesla, I'm going to be pretty good. Exactly. Yeah. That's interesting to see that. Um, so is it, I'm curious to see if it's per wallet or if it's per, uh, ping when that you own it's one per penguin. One entry per penguin is what I read in the discord. So we'll, we'll see if that ends up being true. Cause that gives me a more than one. A exactly. Interesting. And then, so we have, they are unveiling tonight and then we have the bears, right? Bears minted today. What were those called? The bear season bears.Yeah. So we had a bear market bears. That's a fun name, right. And this was kind of cool artwork. And the thing that caught my eye mass, uh, this project didn't have a ton of followers on Twitter or in the discord, but then there were some articles circulated, right? That the artists of this project actually drew a comic for the new Yorker, a well-known magazine. And his story is that he lost his cool cat. He had it stolen. So he modeled this project after the cool cats. Right. And you mentioned that earlier on the show, right? There's a lot of projects out there. A lot of FOMO people looking for the next cool cats. Right? So this project meant to today. And it didn't have a lot of steam at first, but then it blew up in a hurry.Right. We saw gas hit, I think almost 400 as this thing started selling out towards the end. Um, I liked the artwork. I I'm curious to see, it sounds like the reveal is going to be in 24 hours. So I do own some of these, uh, this was 0.03, five to mint, and we're at a floor of 0.06. So a decent return right now.If you got in on this one, Um, what do you think of this one? Mass? Yeah. So again, yeah, there are definitely remind me. I can tell they're inspired by cool cats, but actually, you know, they're inspired by cool cats, but they have their own unique style to them. It's not a complete rip off, which I like. I actually liked these a lot.I like the T the computer one looks pretty cool. The gas masks one looks cool. One that, uh, they compared to a breaking bad. It was a breaking beer. They called it with the mass. So I like that. I mean, I'm a big fan of breaking bad. I watched that whole show. So to get a bear, you know, along that lines would be kind of cool.So I own some of these and I'm excited, uh, another, uh, you know, mint that happened today. That again, started out slow. And then it sold out in a hurry and that's why, you know, sometimes it pays to be early. Uh, you know, if you have the time to be on Twitter, be in these discords, uh, it can pay off, uh, with getting in to some of these projects. So we also have, uh, sub docs, right. Sub docs on September 30th. So that is Thursday. This week, they are dropping king from. So you will be able to claim, um, if you are a duck holder, there's also going to be a public sale. Um, so I, I kinda like this, right? You, you own a sub doc, you're going to get a frog, uh, that picture down below.Um, and your claimed frogs inherit, inherit your duck traits. Mass. That's a question we've asked a lot of these teams, right? When we had on, you know, doge pound when we had on crypto dash. When they normally do these new NFTs, it's a random draw. Right? You don't get any traits from your existing one. Sub ducks is going to do it the other way. You're going to get traits based on your current holding. Uh, I'm a fan of both ways. I don't know which way I prefer you have thoughts on this math. Yeah. Um, it's interesting. I think. Helps, you know, current holders and the other strategy is to bring in new holders, right? So it seems like this strategy is rewarding.Current holders, a little bit more, uh, you know, that bought the rare ones that have been able to, you know, build the community. It's interesting. Cause sub ducks was one of the first projects. When I first got 10 FTEs, it was sub ducks and cool cats. Those were like, you know, below one eighth floor and it's crazy to see them grow so much so quick. So I'm a big fan of them and what they're doing so far. So I will definitely try to snipe a couple of. And then right before the show started, or actually when the show started, we did have a drop mass that I was watt. Didn't get into tropical turtles. Did you hear of that one? Cheers out of this one yet, but they had a pretty big following on social media. So I'm curious to see, um, if this one sold out and what kind of reaction it got. Um, I don't see a tweet from them that it did sell it. Um, 0.03, five per turtle. Um, but this was a project I was watching cause mass, I mean, it's got that cute factor. Right. And we know how well that does. Um, yeah, so it looks like it did not, uh, catch on as quick as people thought. So it looks like a still in progress. So, um, anyone out there in the chat start trapping those projects in mass. Are there any other upcoming mints or events that you're watching that we didn't get to, to. Um, you know what it's interesting now because I've realized a lot of these projects that are successful, they're stealth drops, you know, they're, they're not marketed, they're not promoted anywhere. They just happen at a random time. So no, there's nothing specific, but I feel like the way the most successful projects right now have been stealth drops. So I will keep my eye out for those, because there's just so many projects going around. What about, yeah. Yeah. You know, that's the biggest thing is that either the stealth drops or these ones, like the bears, right.Where maybe it was on a calendar, but it wasn't on a big calendar. It wasn't widely circulated, but then it takes, you know, some different community artwork, seeing the roadmap, seeing the cute factor, right. To really get the momentum going. Um, you know, that's how I found out about. The bears today. Um, the bastard penguins, you know, I didn't see them on a big calendar. It was just a, you know, finding it through the community. Right. Which we're all about, uh, shout out. Ruelle in the chat room L asking about dark horizon. I do not know this one, that artwork though, in that PFS. Looks pretty cool. Uh, so Ruelle saying I love the art I saw from it. Ruelle give us a, some more info maybe while we're looking up.I'm guessing this one has not minted yet. Do we have a date of October? Okay. Mass. What do you think of that artwork? I mean, it looks, you know, similar to some projects, but I think it's a different enough. Yeah, definitely get into Oni, a Omni more five for this one. Um, you know, they're cool. I like them. I would look more into the roadmap and seeing the community.I liked them a lot for sure that the color pops, I think the color with these are pop a little more to me, just looking at them for. Just outside point of view really quick. What do you think of? Yeah, yeah, Andrew, I'll say in, uh, October 10th is the mint date. So we're going to have to add that to the calendar.Um, I'd like that, you know, we've got some time to do the research and look, um, I liked that color. I feel like those colors pop, especially the ones where like the face is purple and the moon behind is purple or green and green. You know what I mean? The color on the color. I kind of like. Yeah, exactly. And I think the question is, you know, what would make a good profile picture.Right. And then if it's, yes, then it's most likely going to do well, you know? Yeah. I mean, that's the big thing, right? Or are we back to Oni and you know, some of the big artwork projects being profile pictures, or are we full in, on the cute factor season math? Another thing we didn't talk about, and I don't know if you saw this, um, I know someone shouted it out.Discord. I wrote an article about it. Discord changed to where, if you are a nitro member. So if you pay the monthly fee of either 4 99 or 9 99, you can now change your discord profile picture in each individual discord, the. I did see that. And I think that's really awesome because we're involved in so many communities. And I wonder if they did that strictly because of that. I think so that was the article I wrote mass was if, if you're big and NFT is right, so discord started, you know, it was heavy in the video game community. Then it was, you know, big for stock trading communities. And now. We know all too well, right? That it is so big for NFTs building communities. So I think this is huge, right? Because you know, if I'm in a bunch of different discords, but I own a bunch of different NFTs. How do I pick which one I display across all the discords I'm in. Also, if you're trying to be a loyal member to a distance. But they see that your profile picture is a different NFT project.I mean, I've had that happen, right? How does that look? But you can't just make it, you know, F you, do you want to be in more than one discord, so you can't just make it one profile. So now if you pay, which, I mean, I think it's worth it, right? Because you also get server boosts, you get unlimited discords. I mean, I know I've hit that right.Where you hit a hundred discords and you can't add anymore, but to be able to change your profile picture, right. Why not show off the NFTs you bought. I mean, isn't that part of, you know, having that, that wallet with all these different MFTs is the value, the rise in growth and also the, the show off factor.Exactly. No, that's awesome. Actually, one other thing I want to talk about, we didn't talk about, did you see Joe Rogan who was talking about apes in his last episode yesterday, he pulled up a picture of an ape and started talking. I didn't which, which eight he was talking about how board apps. Yeah. Yeah.He was just kind of going to over the price and, you know, he was, he, uh, caught, you know, just screenshot at it type of thing. He wasn't really a big believer, which just shows us how early we are. You know, I still think public perception of NFTs are, you can just screenshot this or just, you know, a left click, right.Click save. Uh, so it was interesting to see. Yeah. Uh, I'm seeing a comment here from Omar in the chat thoughts on hall of fame, goats, mass. I remember when these came out. Um, I don't know if you know these, but it is one of the artists behind board apes. Right. And he also recently launched the vampires. So well-known artists in the NFT community.Um, I was surprised that these didn't really take off when they were launched. We have a floor right now. Point. Oh five. What do you, what do you think a goats? I think I also saw recently that they were working on an updated, a roadmap or maybe a fusion or a new something. I'm going to have to look at this, but what do you think of hall of fame?Goats, funny story. Sorry, this was actually one of my first like couple of live, live mints. You know, this is one of my first live mints that I did when they launched back in July. Um, you know, the original roadmap was, I think they were going to do a festival or something like that. And I just think it got, they got lost with all the new hype coming on.They kind of got slept on, but, you know, I liked the art, you know, I, I w I'm curious to see what the roadmap is. And the thing about these NFTs is we go through cycles, right? So these goats may end up pumping a week or a month or a year from now, who knows, considering the fact that board Dave's has become successful and they have ties to the artists.That's. Yeah. I mean, definitely helps to have, you know, the artist of one of the biggest projects out there. Um, you know, the vampire one had a huge discord, a huge demand, right. Based on him being in the project. Uh, yeah, we're going to have to check out the roadmap of hall of fame, goat lodge. Um, cause there could be something there.Um, well that is just going to about do it for our show today. Coming up after the roadmap Benzinga is premiering an education video on short selling. I know that's that evil phrase right in the stock market, short selling, but we're going to give you some education on short selling and why investors should maybe look at that new avenue mass.We do not have a show on Thursday at 2:00 PM Eastern time because Benzinga is hosting a healthcare conference covering health care. But I'm thinking maybe when that health care conference and should we whip up at a live episode of the roadmap at like 5:00 PM Eastern time? What do you think? You think the community out there wants that?Should we ask for some votes? Yeah, I'm curious to hear some votes. We'll ask community. Definitely. You're watching. And you want us to do a show later in the day on Thursday, thumbs up, leave us a comments. Um, you know, there's just so much going on in that empty world, Chris, that when you miss a day, it feels like you're missing so much content to talk about. So yeah, I think the community will be down for it. Yeah. So guys smash the like and press one in the. Uh, see us Thursday at 5:00 PM. Eastern time. When the healthcare conference ends, you heard mass and I talk and headlines and some of these upcoming mints, right? I said Thursday, September 30th, a couple of times. That's Thursday. If we don't do a show Thursday, you won't hear from us again until next week. So we're going to miss out on some stuff while it looks like there's a lion out there that wants to see us Thursday. So let us know, leave comments in the video. Um, after this airs as well and hit mass and I up on Twitter handles are there on the screen. Also want to bring up our roadmap. Uh, Twitter, if I can find it here as well. Um, but, uh, another great show, right? Exciting times for NFTs. There it is at the roadmap BZ our, our Twitter account, and then also follow Mazza. And I, and let us know if you want to hear more from us on Thursday. Mass happy trading out there.I know we'll be talking over the next couple of days and hopefully we will see the community on Thursday at 5:00 PM Eastern time. Absolutely. Yeah. We're always looking for new projects. I mean, me and Chris constantly talk every single day about new projects coming up. So if you know any, let us know on Twitter, uh, we're always on the search, so I'm excited and we will see you on Thursday.Awesome. Bye everyone. Listen in to us completely break our podcast structure to wax poetic about the powerhouse performance of the FIREY Angela Basset, who may just need an award greater than the Golden Scrunchie (albeit the most hallowed award of all time). SOMEONE needed to recognize the performance that should have won a goddam Oscar. Not to mention the absolutely steaming hot wardrobe that had us shopping the internet for look alikes. This movie is all powerhouse females: the late great QUEEN OF THE NIGHT Whitney Houston, her majesty herself Angela Bassett, “This Christmas”’s Ma’Dere Loretta Devine, and the incredibly seductive Lela Rochon. HELL NO, H2O! (A very problematic slogan for a bar, btw...the Betties do not condone dehydration.) First off: all the male hecklers in this movie need to die in hell, and all of the women need to dance on a bar together in heaven...forever. Because this movie, while perhaps not quite a cinematic masterpiece per se, made a very permanent mark on our young psyches. We also love the fact that this movie is not only based on a real bar in NYC, but based more specifically on an essay by Elizabeth Gilbert, Miss Eat Pray Love herself, who worked at the original bar in NYC! Mark my words, one day the Betties will party at Coyote Ugly. Mark. My. Words. Look, we have already proved ourselves worthy by taking shots of whiskey on air. And at least one of us has a true ‘coyote ugly’ story...tune in to hear about the lurid details! What the hell is this movie? A family drama, a rom com, a buddy flick...all rolled into one? With an art school veneer on select scenes? Plus near-death drowning experiences while surfing ludicrously large waves? We'll take it...maybe? The Betties are not quite sure what to make of this movie, but we definitely had fun discussing "chill" surfer culture, workers rights of hotel employees, and dating football players. We recall our own attempts at surfing and how nobody in this movie should be shaming ANYONE for being terrified of drowning since that is a VERY REAL possibility. There are some nice takeaways, like "even if you repeatedly fail to perform well during a competition, you can redeem yourself by catching one perfect wave" or "if you are talking shit about someone, maybe make sure they are not in the same room with you"! When Sharon McRill was laid off from her corporate job in 2003, she started a business running errands for busy professionals. Initially, she was doing a wide range of tasks from grocery shopping to organizing to pet care. But as the business evolved and her team grew, McRill realized that relocation management was their sweet spot. And now that she has niched down to a specialty, McRill's business is ‘growing like crazy.' McRill is the owner and president of The Betty Brigade, a business that helps busy professionals with moving, home staging, organizing and handyman services. McRill's 10-member team of ‘Betties' is committed to bringing peace and ease to organization and relocation, and their clients include individuals, realtors, trust officers and estate planners. McRill has been featured in a number of media outlets, including The Detroit Free Press, Crain's Detroit Business and Forbes. The Betty Brigade was recently named one of the Ten Growing Companies to Watch by The Ann Arbor Business Review and honored as the 2014 Affiliate of the Year by the Ann Arbor Area Board of Realtors. Today, McRill explains how getting laid off from her corporate job served as the impetus for starting The Betty Brigade. She describes how niching down to her team's sweet spot in organizing and relocation management has led to significant growth. McRill also shares her insight around the psychological aspect of her work, discussing the case study of a woman whose relationships are strained because of her hoarding tendencies. Listen in for McRill's advice on leveraging perseverance to build a financially viable business you believe in! Key Interview Takeaways Hone down to your sweet spot. In the beginning, McRill's team performed a wide range of errands for busy professionals, but she found that their strength was in relocation management. Since she niched down to organizing and relocation services, her business has taken off. It's about the stuff, but it's not about the stuff. In working with hundreds of hoarders over the years, McRill has learned that the psychological aspect of the issue is paramount. In fact, she requires that those clients be in therapy to work through their inability to let go. Running a business is not for the faint of heart. McRill contends that every day brings new challenges and celebrations, and she credits her success to perseverance: If you really believe in what you're doing, keep going and the reward will come. Maintain change with new behavior. Once McRill's team has finished a project, she encourages clients to develop new routines, like setting aside time once a week to put everything back where it belongs. The Bold Betties is a travel and adventure platform that empowers women by eliminating the barriers and logistics that keep women inside, stuck in the monotony of day to day life. Today on Intrepid Entrepreneur I'm talking with the founder, Niki Koubourlis, on her experience starting and managing the Bold Betties, and the incredible places this adventure has taken her. Niki Koubourlis started out in a stable, successful corporate career, which she ultimately found very unfulfilling. She was starting to worry about what she was accomplishing with her life, and questioning whether it was what she really wanted It wasn't. And so, she moved to Colorado, the land of adventure. In Colorado, Niki forced herself to not take a job and instead, she took some time to develop friendships and to get in touch with her passions. And then – one thing led to another, and Niki stumbled into founding the Bold Betties, a meet-up group for women looking to bond with each other and to get outdoors. The group grew quickly—within its first week, there were 200 members. Honestly, I'd never heard of a business built on “Meet Up” groups, and I think it's such a cool idea (note: I realize that many companies have been built this way, I just have not been familiar with this path). One of her important early insights as that there were few opportunities for novices to learn and enjoy outdoor activities, so she saw her business as filling that niche. But the biggest commonality between people who sign up for Betties events is women in transition, looking to start something new. You'll be inspired by what else Niki tells me about getting started with the Betties and where this adventure has taken her, on this episode of the Intrepid Entrepreneur!   Habit for Success Build business around community. When you can bring together groups of people, you are providing them incredible value, and you will probably find that that community is the most important part of your business.   Resources: BoldBetties.com   Show Notes:  IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/Niki-Koubourlis
