Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

June is African American Music Appreciation Month! It was created by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. We celebrate the African American musical influences that comprise an essential part of our nation's treasured cultural heritage. You've heard of Kendrick Lamar? J. Cole? Well, add Yung Wylin to this list of conscious hiphop artists. Like Kendrick and J. Cole, Yung Wylin has had his encounters with mental health and wellness. He shares his journey in developing his wellness plan which includes a 'clean' diet, awareness of processed foods and how they affect us, our brains, our children based on his personal experiences. His desire to live healthier and to share what he has learned has inspired his style of rap - conscious rap. Conscious rap is a sub-genre of hip-hop aimed at creating social awareness. Yung Wylin's new single, "Good Energy" is capturing young and old from the head boppin' track to the meaningful, uplifting lyrics. Yung Wylin is on a mission to share his 'good energy', his insights into being the change that we all need. He takes the couch with me to share his path to this 'good energy' and how he discovered that society needs more conscious and social awareness.

In Episode 38 of Elevated Conversations, I interviewed my dear friend, Khalil Roquemore, also known by his artist name, Khalil The Goat. In August 2021, Khalil and I released an interfaith collaboration titled "Life Vein", which is about our soul's nearness to God.In 50:16 of The Quran, it states: "We verily created man and We know what his soul whispereth to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein."While in the Baha'i Writings, Bahá'u'lláh states: "This most great, this fathomless and surging Ocean is near, astonishingly near, unto you. Behold it is closer to you than your life-vein!"Moved by these pieces of scripture, Khalil and I came together to create this song in hopes of inspiring others to tap into their connection with the Almighty. In the interview, we explored Khalil's journey in life, how we met, the inspiration behind the new song, and a bunch of other elevated themes! To listen to "Life Vein":Khalil The Goat ft.

This week, Mike is thrilled to welcome back to the podcast Haviah Mighty, one of the most exciting and acclaimed rapper-producers in Canada. Haviah's last LP, 13th Floor, won the 2019 Polaris Music Prize and was the first rap album to do so. Because Haviah and Mike happened to be speaking the morning after Cadence Weapon won this year's Polaris Prize, they begin by discussing the fact that there have now been three politically-conscious rap albums in a row win the prize and what that means. Haviah then discuss her own experiences during the pandemic and how that has shaped her own thoughts on how artists find validation online. That topic is at the core of her upcoming album, Stock Exchange, in a couple of ways. So, she digs into this new project and how it came together. Following the new conversation with Haviah Mighty, Mike also re-shares the wonderful conversation he had a couple months ago with Cadence Weapon about his album, Parallel World, which just won this year's Polaris Music Prize as the best Canadian album of the year.

Alles lange her und verjährt. Bushido entschuldigte sich. Dennoch.

Ey yo, was geht, Spax?

This episode delves into a passage from Nietzsche's Gay Science on giving style to one's life to demonstrate that his view of style is not superficial but rather substantive. This giving of style creates an orbit of several of Nietzsche's most important conceptions: the need for an Ultimate (the Death of God), the dialectic between Apollo and Dionysus, the need for distance or abstraction, the importance of aesthetics, becoming what you are, and the eternal recurrence. To further examine the issue of distance, I turn to Graham Harman's view of the withdrawal of the real object and the tension he labels "allure." The last segment then applies this view of abstraction/distance and the constellation of other concepts discussed to some elements of the conscious rap of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Digable Planets.

Host: Diane Gil Special Guest: Antonio Moore, Lamon Gorman, Franschesca Benzant Episode Introduction: In today’s episode of the Now What podcast, Diane and her guests talk about Conscious Rap & Hip Hop as they travel back to the year 2000, and its relevance in the present year 2020. Episode Summary: The theme is this episode revolves around two songs: They Schools (2000) and Jesus Walks (2004). Various lyrics are discussed and their importance then and now Key Themes: They Schools by Dead Prez This song is the first time that the issue of racism was outlined in mainstream hip hop. Children of color face discrimination in public schools and tend to think less of themselves by not to respect their own heritage because of this. This song changes the traditional ideas of what terms like ‘education’ and ‘success’ mean. The lyrics also explain the types of history being taught to black students in the public school system. Dead Prez talks about how real life skills are not taught in the educational setting. The complete spectrum of opportunities is not provided to children of colors and they’re only prepared for menial jobs. If you don’t agree with what They Schools had to say, they label you as ‘dumb’ and outcast you. Key Themes: Jesus Walks by Kanye West This song talks about relinquishing all control to Jesus. The song emphasises on the challenges faced in Chicago. The lyrics of the song say that one doesn’t need to be Christian in order for Jesus to walk with them. The song broke a lot of barriers in terms of what was considered “acceptable”. This song talks about the themes of terrorism and racism. In a lot of ways, it can be seen that the song is still relevant to the current times. Kanye West comes off as being vulnerable and highlights the importance of black mental health. Notable Facts & Statistics: Ever since the time of slavery, people have used music as a medium of conveying their emotions. Back in the time, slaves used to sing hymns of freedom. Black students represent 31% of the school arrests in America. Black students are expelled or suspended 3x times more than their white counterparts. Black students face the consequences of zero tolerance policy unproportionately more than their white counterparts. RBG is a prevalent theme in Dead Prez Music but it also stands for ‘Revolutionary but Gangsta’. RBG is also traced back and deeply rooted in the pan-Africanism movement. On this episode of the People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper Murs to discuss the current state of hip-hop, the lack of support for "conscious rap," whether gangs should incorporate, and the influence of white emcees like El-P.
The turbulence and violence of the late 1980s pushed hip-hop away from its party music roots, giving birth to a new subgenre: conscious rap. Groups like and Public Enemy and artists like KRS-One became stars, creating music that emphasized pro-Black political messaging. But just as conscious rap was reaching its height, one song threatened to bring the whole movement crashing down.
Drug wars, recessions and record violence in the 1980s had US cities in crisis. Hip hop artists responded by shifting from party music to a new style called "conscious rap." Artists like Public Enemy and Digable Planets championed a sound that was political, community-minded and deeply pro-black. But about six years after it started, that first wave of socially-conscious hip hop seemed to be over. Christopher M. Johnson joins host Kai Wright to find out what happened on the new podcast The Stakes. Hear from: - Rapper Kool Moe Dee - Writer and filmmaker Nelson George - Dan Charnas, author of The Big Payback - Ann Carli, former hip hop record executive

This week we recorded our first episode live from Gotham Podcast Studios and sat down Conscious Rap and discussing everything from his recording process, first steps making music, developing a record label as well as much more. INDULGE Conscious Rap Bio and Social Media BELOW CR aka Conscious RapI was born and raised in Elizabeth New Jersey. I am of Haitian descent. Graduated with honors from New Jersey City University in 2017 with a Psychology degree. I gave my life to music completely in 2016 when I started JOTF Records, but music has always been in my life since I was 8 years old. I rap and sing, so I consider myself a rap-singer. I never spit other people's bars and I write all my own material. My major influences are Jay Z, Nas, Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Chris Brown, and of course Tupac. My sound can not fit into a box because I am constantly playing with my voice doing different accents and different pitches to capture my character on whatever song I'm creating. I hope you enjoy this music. Is conscious rap dead or alive? Which rappers are WokeNFree? In this episode, we will talk all about rap PLUS…you will get to know the one and only rapper Miss Eaves. ----more---- Episode Shout-out to Riot grrrl, nerdcore, Peaches, Sia, M.I.A., LIZZO, Leikeli47, Urban Dictionary, ThoughtCo., Facebook, Queen Latifah, Kendrick Lamar, Immortal Technique, MC-Lyte, Lupe Fiasco, Kurtis Blow, Big Daddy Kane, Ice Cube, Killer Mike, KRS-One, Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Kanye West, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monch, K-Os, Nas, and Lauryn Hill. Miss Eaves is the feminist sound storm of Brooklyn based multimedia artist Shanthony Exum. Her fierce femcee electro-pop-rap-dance-explosions were born as a phoenix arisen from the hot fire of both a band and romantic break-up, and she has since spread her wings and played music around the world. Miss Eaves’ brazen, patriarchy push-back, it’s my body, take-no-sh*t lyrics are rabid animals of honesty. “Hand down my pants I flick the bean. My boo ghost but I don’t need him. Five digits gonna make me squirm and scream. This is all on me.” She says in “Hump Day,” which was featured on Glamour, Huffington Post and Refinery 29. Her 0 f***s attitude landed her an invitation for a European tour with collaborator and friend, Surfing Leons (Belgium) as well as a tour with Wheatus and MC Frontalot. She has also killed the stage at Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld and Dour and Les Rockomotive. Conscious rap is a category of hip-hop culture that builds awareness and instills knowledge. These artists usually speak against violence, drug use and other social ills. It's built on the idea that social change is brought on through knowledge of self and personal discovery. There was a time when the hardest emcees gave the world an enlightening song: Ice Cube—Us; Geto Boys—Crooked Officer; X-Clan—Funkin’ Lesson; Tupac—Keep Ya Head Up. Lately, the subject matter in most rap lyrics are far from inspiring. There is, however a new movement on the horizon— Larry "Lak" Henderson’s Smart Music Movement is bringing back the days when rap lyrics penetrated and motivated young minds and strengthened communities at the roots. Henderson is here set the stage and revitalize awareness in rap. Conscious rap is well rested and ready for a second wind.
Tonight on Talk of the Town with Nick Eden we will be discussing the current state of hip-hop. Many have seen Hip-Hop evolve from conscious, political, and party to gangsta, criminal, sexual, and drug. Hip-Hop music has influenced the masses effecting culture, style, and even some people's psychological mindstate. So where do we see music going currently? Did gangsta, criminal, sexual, and drug in rap music influence the mindstate of the masses in a negative way? Did the evolution of Hip-hop hurt the genre or help it? Will conscience, educational, and political music be accepted by the masses ever again at the magnitude of gangsta, criminal, sexual, and drug rap?
