This month a musical featuring a Scamfluencers alum closed its doors on Broadway. Tammy Faye featured music by Elton John and told the story of a televangelist who stole America's heart with her humor, earnestness, and impressive eye makeup. You may no longer be able to see the musical, but we're giving you the next best thing: a return to our own coverage of Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim. Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker get their start in Christian broadcasting in the early 1960s and quickly become television superstars. As their fame explodes, they build an empire complete with their own network, a theme park, and a super-sized luxury lifestyle for themselves. But when their spending – and their scandals – get out of control, they'll face their own judgment day. This episode contains descriptions of sexual assault. Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were pioneers of the Word of Faith/Prosperity Gospel movement in the 70's and 80's. They were televangelists who started their own broadcast network PTL (Praise The Lord) and even created a theme park and water park called Heritage USA. This week's guest is my step uncle - Alan Gifford who worked at PTL in Heritage USA and who's father was a personal security guard for Jim Bakker. He shares some funny, personal stories about his time working for the Bakkers and growing up in the Word Of Faith belief.    Hi, I'm Mackenzie. I'm a music artist, worship leader, wife, mom (I wear a lot of hats), and host of the Godly Whistleblower podcast. I seek to shine a light on popular teachings and music in the church today and share what Scripture teaches on how we are to worship in spirit and in truth within the church gathering. My desire is to learn together with my listeners how Christians are to live lives ultimately as a pleasing worship to God. In the 1980s, The PTL or Praise The Lord Satellite Network founded by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker broadcast into millions of homes throughout the world with their special brand of prosperity gospel. Jim's charismatic sermons and Tammy Faye's musical performances and bombastic personality brought a new kind of Christianity into people's lives. Their little television studio in Fort Mills, SC quickly grew into Heritage USA, a 2,300 acre resort, waterpark and state-of-the-art recording facility. Paid for largely by the constant telefunding on their shows. Heritage USA gave Christians a special place to bring their families to vacation and worship, but as the Bakker's empire grew, so did their lavish spending. And just when Jim was set to begin his more ambitious project yet -- a Christian Disneyland -- complete with roller coaster that damned sinners to hell, someone uncovered where all that money was really going. Named for a William S. NPR highlighted the Israeli-born Barzelay as “the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor,” while Rolling Stone hailed his songwriting as “soulful and incisive,” and The New Yorker praised his music's “soothing melodies and candid wit.”Barzelay just launched a podcast called A Life in Song. A Life In Song is born of the idea that everybody has a story to tell, and everyone deserves a song. Each episode begins with an ordinary person sharing an incredible, heartbreaking, and often life-changing experience, and culminates with an original song written and performed by long-time indie fave Clem Snide. Hear about Lawrence's escape from a cult in the middle of West Texas, Mike's first sleepless night after impulsively joining the Navy, and Chris' experience homeschooling in Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's basement after his mom's nervous breakdown. Equal parts comedy and tragedy, Tammy's story is quite the Hail Mary as she and her husband, Jim Bakker, turn their ministry into the world's largest religious broadcasting network. It seemed the only appropriate way to discuss this story through “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” was for Matt to sit down with the film's director - the one and only, Michael Showalter! Our guest this week is author, speaker, and cofounder of Revolution Church, Jay Bakker! Jay is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, who were two of the most successful televangelists of all time, and founders of the Praise the Lord Network. They inspired the recent biopic “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” for which Jessica Chastain won an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Tammy Faye. Jay grew up in the shadow of the scandal that engulfed his family, but he has strived to forge his own path, beliefs, and accomplishments apart from the big church infrastructure that he knew as a kid. He co-founded Revolution Church, and adopted a more progressive form of Christian faith – one that isn't afraid of doubt, that denounces the legalism of Evangelicalism, and that offers itself as a home to everyone without conditions. Jay is a bridge builder in a time where we desperately need them, and we had a great time talking to him! You can follow Jay on Twitter and Instagram (@jaybakker), or find out more about Revolution Church at www.revolutionchurch.com.   Our friends at Minor Threads are the absolute best when it comes to screen printing! Jessica Chastain plays the iconic preacher's wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, in this 2021 biopic. We, like most people in the country, remembered Tammy Faye as much more complicit in her husband's crimes than she actually was, when in reality she was kind of cool. We demand a network find a way to give us Tammy's Teens, Yoko Ono makes an appearance, and we rage against religion...a lot.Show Notes:To sign up for our Patreon feed, download the Patreon app or visit www.patreon.com/genxthisiswhyFollow Gen X, This is Why on Facebook: facebook.com/genxthisiswhy/Join our Facebook Group, The Me-Me B's for extra content, giveaways, and some fun Gen X introspection: facebook.com/groups/genxthisiswhy/And find us on Instagram at: @genxthisiswhyYou can find Amye at: @amyewatchestvYou can find Jennie, but good luck with that.Questions? The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a film that probably works best as a companion to the compelling 2000 documentary that inspired it. While watching that documentary is not a prerequisite to enjoy the film on its own terms, the movie will certainly appeal best to people who have a working knowledge of the hilarious and tragic hijinks that ensued in America in the 1970's and 1980's. What the documentary — by nature of its medium — lacks in pathos, this film more than makes up for by giving viewers a look at the life, times, and hardships of the controversial late-20th century televangelist, here portrayed by a truly mesmerizing Jessica Chastain in an Oscar-nominated performance. Does Tammy Faye really buy all that she's selling, or is it all just a means to an end for her, a way of making a quick buck at the expense of the burnt-out and the gullible? Wisely, the film never seeks to provide a definitive answer to the question. That conclusion is left up to the viewer to determine for themselves, much like it was at the end of the 20th century for those who witnessed the collapse of the PTL empire firsthand. Instead, the film opts to paint viewers a portrait of Tammy Faye that perhaps wasn't as obvious on the television sets, portraying her as a human being of texture and contradiction. The story of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker is something of a tragedy of Shakespearian proportions, full of self-sabotage and rich paradox. At the end of the day, these are two people undone by their own fantasies. The whole affair calls to mind the dark irony found in any number of Psalms, such as Psalm 10, wherein the psalmist cries out to the Lord demanding that the arrogant wicked who pursue the poor are caught in their own schemes (Ps. 10:2). Can anyone look at Tammy Faye and say, with certainty, whether the woman truly believed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ as the basis of her right standing with the Father? No, and to that end, The Eyes of Tammy Faye does not even attempt to offer comment. But she was sincere in her delusion, that much comes through in the film, and pathetic in the truest literary sense of the word. I believe that Jesus Christ must have felt deeply for her, as he feels deeply for those who, like Tammy, remain ensnared by the fixed illusion that God has only ever intended the faithful to prosper materialisticallyThis Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Cole Burgett about his online-exclusive article, “Tragedy and Delusion in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” **Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.** https://www.equip.org/article/tragedy-and-delusion-in-the-eyes-of-tammy-faye/Starting in February 2021, online-exclusive articles, have been locked and are only available for Journal subscribers as noted below; however, given the time sensitive nature and global importance of this subject, our editorial board decided to make this available to the public as soon as possible.
