Illinois Advances Ban on Styrofoam Food Containers for a Cleaner Future

Illinois is moving closer to a cleaner environment as Senate Bill 1531, spearheaded by State Senator Laura Fine, advances in the state legislature. The measure aims to prohibit the sale and distribution of food containers made from polystyrene foam—commonly known as Styrofoam—across Illinois starting January 1, 2030. Fine highlighted that while these containers are used briefly, they persist in the environment for decades, polluting waterways and threatening wildlife. Polystyrene contains styrene, a chemical linked to multiple health risks, including cancer and nervous system damage. The bill passed the Senate on Wednesday and now awaits consideration in the House.

In Episode 328, Kestrel welcomes Dana Zhaxylykova, an environmental scientist & microplastics researcher, to the show. Originally from Kazakhstan, Dana is currently based in Germany — through her Instagram platform, she shares practical and actionable tips about microplastics through a scientific lens. “As a scientist, I want to assure you that every little action in avoiding plastic, it can have an impact. And as scientists and as a scientific community, we expect people, not only the governments and corporations (they have a huge responsibility, of course), but we as people, we also can have an impact as individuals, we can help these problems to get solved faster.”-Dana This month, we're focusing on diverse ways to combat fast fashion. I don't know about you, but whenever I think of fast fashion, my brain automatically goes to issues around MICROPLASTICS. Considering that over 60% of global fiber production is synthetic materials – derived from fossil fuels – it's hard not to make that connection, especially given some of the intimate experiences I've had watching scientists from 5 Gyres literally collect microplastics from the water and air around us, and hear them talk about how so many of the microplastics they collect have come from fabric and clothing.  As this week's guest highlights, with nylon, polyester and acrylic fabrics flooding the fast fashion market, these fibers are actually releasing microplastics in every stage of the process – from production, to wearing the garments, to washing and drying them. Basically, there are microplastics being shed into our environment from every single stage of a fast fashion garment's lifecycle. That feels overwhelming, I know, but I love how this week's guest really puts things into perspective, not only from a scientific lens, but also from a practical hands-on point of view, offering us suggestions on the things we can actually control, when it comes to microplastics in our lives.  “Seasonal variation and removal of microplastics in a central Asian urban wastewater treatment plant”, Dana's research paper “Effect of microplastics deposition on human lung airways: A review with computational benefits and challenges”, paper Dana mentions “Environmental exposure to microplastics: an overview on possible human health effects”, paper Dana mentions “Effects of microplastic exposure on human digestive, reproductive, and respiratory health: a rapid systemic review”, paper Dana mentions “Polystyrene microplastics exacerbate systemic inflammation in high-fat diet-induced obesity”, paper Dana mentions

Today's guest is Celeste Bell, daughter of the one and only Poly Styrene, a woman who was an absolute punk icon. If you know that name, then you'll definitely know songs like Art-I-Ficial, Junk Food Junkie and Identity which Poly sang as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Through her music Poly Styrene inspired the likes of Neneh Cherry, FKA Twigs and many more, but it wasn't just her music, it was her attitude. Sadly Poly passed in 2011 from breast cancer, but I reached out to her daughter Celeste after seeing the brilliant documentary she directed, entitled Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche. In this episode Celeste shares on her mother's mental health - and how being misdiagnosed made things worse - as well as the things that made Poly happy, such as makeup, dressing up, reading magazines and enjoying a spa day. Celeste also shares her own experiences of motherhood, which inevitably draw comparisons with how she was raised by a mother who was often overwhelmed by life. By the way, right near the end Celeste shares a hilarious story about women in punk, so be sure to keep listening! TW: themes of religion, cults, mental health. By the way, look out for my video on Poly, especially if this is the first time you're learning about her. In this episode of the "How to Protect the Ocean" podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the pressing issue of plastic pollution and highlights a promising biological solution involving African mealworms. The episode focuses on the Kenyan lesser mealworm, a larval form of the Alphitobius darkling beetle, which has shown the ability to break down polystyrene, commonly known as styrofoam. This capability is attributed to the unique microbes and bacteria in the mealworms' gut. Researchers are studying these gut bacteria to identify specific communities that facilitate the degradation of plastic materials. Key findings from the research indicate that the mealworms can effectively digest polystyrene when provided with a nutrient-rich diet, such as bran, alongside the styrofoam. This balanced diet appears to enhance the production of the necessary bacteria and enzymes to break down plastic. The study revealed significant shifts in bacterial composition based on the mealworms' diet, suggesting that the gut microbiome adapts to optimize plastic degradation. The episode emphasizes the potential of harnessing these naturally occurring bacteria and enzymes for large-scale applications in plastic waste management, particularly in regions like Africa, where plastic waste poses significant environmental challenges. By isolating and utilizing these microbial communities, there is hope for developing innovative methods to biologically process plastic waste, reducing reliance on harmful chemical recycling methods. The podcast presents a hopeful perspective on using biological solutions, like the African mealworm, to combat plastic pollution and promote environmental conservation. Once upon a time in England, a teenager named Susan Murphy brought her saxophone to audition for a new punk band called X-Ray Spex- a group that was not looking for a sax player. Despite that fact, she made the cut, and like her fellow new band mates, she adopted a stage name: Lora Logic was born. When her tenure with the band was unexpectedly cut short, a friend with a studio encouraged her to forge her own path, and in 1979 the underground scene was introduced to her next project Essential Logic- a groove-laden and experimental sort of progressive punk rock. Somewhere along the way she became a Krishna devotee and let her music career take a back seat, re-emerging on occasion with a new set of songs. Nearly 50 years after it all began, Essential Logic is back with a new album called “Land of Kali,” and a box set called “Logically Yours.” Dylan Shearer co-hosted this episode, and we spoke with Lora at length about everything- how it all began, how things have changed, her nuanced collaborative relationship with X-Ray Spex vocalist Poly Styrene, why she plays the sax, her travels to India, and collaborating with her daughter on the latest iteration of Essential Logic. Lora also shares a favorite vegetarian recipe.

The government is today unveiling the first ever national Kinship Care strategy, aiming to bring more awareness and more money to family members looking after children that aren't theirs. Kinship care is when a child lives full time, or most of the time, with a relative, be it grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, or someone in the wider family network, because their own parents can't care for them. Anita talks to David Johnston, the Under Secretary of State for Children, Families and Wellbeing at the Department of Education about the new strategy.Shane MacGowan, the legendary songwriter and frontman with The Pogues, died on 30th November. As the classic Christmas anthem Fairy Tale of New York reaches number one in Ireland, Anita speaks to his widow, Victoria Mary Clarke about their life together, his music, his addictions and his legacy. It has been a year and a half since Roe vs Wade was overturned in the United States, ending the constitutional nationwide right to abortion for millions of women. It remains an issue that divides opinion. Anita talks to the British writer Nazrin Choudhury, the director of a new short film on the subject; 'Red White and Blue,' follows the character Rachel Johnson, a single mother in a precarious financial position, who is forced to cross state lines from Arkansas in search of an abortion. Musician Lora Logic was the woman behind the iconic saxophone that was a part of the British Punk-Rock band X-Ray Spex. After almost 30 years, the band are re-releasing their second album, Conscious Consumer. Lora joins Anita to talk about the album, what she's up to now and what lead singer Poly Styrene would have thought of the re-release.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt Studio manager: Sue Maillot

Today's episode is about "Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche", a 2021 doc about the British punk legend and X-Ray Spex leader, directed by Celeste Bell and Paul Sng. The movie was selected by our guests, Sweeping Promises. Check out their outstanding new album Good Living Is Coming for You. Poly Styrene, born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, was the child of a Scottish-Irish mother and a Somali father. Celeste Bell, her daughter, narrates and appears in the film in addition to being its co-director. It's a very personal examination of Poly's life and career as Celeste deals with the aftermath of Poly's 2011 death from cancer. We learn about Poly's challenging youth as a mixed-race child in postwar Britain, her explosion as a teenage icon in the early British punk scene, and the mental health issues that arose as she encountered New York for the first time. If you're looking for a movie where John Lydon and Sid Vicious come off as good guys, this is not the film for you. Poly went through several hospitalizations, became a Hare Krishna, lost custody of and later reunited with Celeste, and continued to pursue her artistic ambitions through it all. It's a beautiful movie and it will hopefully continue to bring more attention to Poly Styrene's life and work. Rockshow Episode 183 10 albums you must hear before you die Part 2 6. The Hellacopters' "Payin' the Dues" is a popular album by the Swedish rock band. It was released in 1997 and features their signature blend of garage rock and punk influences. The album received critical acclaim and helped solidify The Hellacopters' reputation as a prominent rock band in the 90s. If you have any specific questions or need more information about the album, feel free to ask! 7. "Mink DeVille: Cabretta" is the debut album by the American rock band Mink DeVille, led by singer-songwriter Willy DeVille. It was released in 1977 and received widespread praise for its unique blend of punk, rock, and R&B influences. The album includes some of their well-known songs like "Spanish Stroll" and "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl." If you have any more questions or need further details about the album or the band, feel free to ask! 8. “X-Ray Spex: Germfree Adolescents." It is the debut album by the British punk rock band X-Ray Spex, released in 1978. The album is known for its energetic punk sound and the distinctive vocals of lead singer Poly Styrene. "Germfree Adolescents" is considered a classic in the punk genre and includes notable tracks like "The Day the World Turned Dayglo" and "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" If you have any more questions or need further information about the album or the band, feel free to ask! 9. Chesterfield Kings: Let's Go Get Stoned Early period Stones were the most obvious touchstone, particularly singer Greg Provost's obvious Jaggerisms, but they went all in on 1994's Let's Go Get Stoned. From the cover art & title to the appearance of a few Stones covers (and Stones-endorsed blues covers) amidst the rollicking originals, this is a great lost circa-1965 Rolling Stones platter, turbocharged with a clear debt to the Stooges and New York Dolls as well. Is it great? Well, if you like '65 Stones with a touch of the Stooges and the New York Dolls, then, yeah, it's great. (And if you don't... oy, what are we gonna do? Sadly, it doesn't stream, and I don't know if it's available anywhere, but the whole thing is ripped to YouTube. So check it out. 10. 11. PP Arnold, whose real name is Patricia Ann Cole, is often referred to as "The First Lady of Immediate." She gained recognition in the 1960s as a prominent vocalist for the Immediate Records label. PP Arnold is known for her soulful and powerful voice, and she worked with renowned artists like The Rolling Stones and Small Faces during her career. These albums have made a significant impact on their respective genres and are considered essential listens for any music enthusiast. Exploring them will give you a deeper understanding of the diversity and evolution of popular music. #rocknroll #ClassicRock #RockMusic #RockAndRoll #RockLegends #RockFans #RockOn #RockLife #RockNRollRevival #RockinMusic #RockGuitar #RockBand #RockNRollHistory #RockConcert #RockNRollForever #RollingStones #Stones #RollingStonesForever #MickJagger #KeithRichards #RockLegends #StonesFans #StonesMusic #StonesConcert #rocknroll #StonesNation #StonesMemories #RockNRollHistory #StonesTour Park Dental Care 12419 101st Ave South Richmond Hill Queens (718) 847-3800 https://www.718DENTISTS.com Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup
