In today's healthcare environment, every minute and every detail matters—especially in sterile processing, where equipment readiness can be a matter of life and death. The evolution of sterilization technologies like Sterad has allowed hospitals and VA centers to move beyond outdated processes that once delayed surgeries and compromised patient care. High-level disinfection alone no longer cuts it when rapid, reliable sterilization is possible—and safer. For frontline teams, the ability to quickly turn over instruments without compromising on biological integrity or technician safety marks a true operational breakthrough. Sterad systems not only eliminate lengthy cooldown times but also deliver satisfaction across the board—from patients to surgeons to sterile processing teams. And with proactive, responsive service partners like Scott Johnson, even equipment maintenance becomes a non-issue. At the center of this experience is Annetta McKnight, Sterile Processing Service Chief at Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, GA, who shares firsthand why dependable sterilization is foundational to modern healthcare.

Though banned in the United States in the 1970s, the chemical DBCP was still used by US fruit companies in countries with lax regulations. In this episode, Dr. Eleanor Bimla Schwartz and Dr. Kelly Treder discuss the misconceptions of tubal sterilization, including debunking notions that is it 100% fool-proof, that the surgery is reversible, that it is more effective than other contraceptive options, or that there is little to no pain post-surgery. “I think we do have fairly widespread misunderstanding of what it means to have your tubes tied. A lot of people seem to have the understanding that that would be something you could easily untie and that it would be a procedure that you could undo,” Dr. Schwartz says. They highlight how important it is for providers to be transparent with patients about long-acting contraception options (arm implant, IUD, vasectomy) and their effectiveness with preventing pregnancy, side effects, cost, accessibility, and longevity compared to surgery. Because of this, it is crucial for providers to be informed about the nuances of different contraceptive options. Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Treder provide firsthand insight into what difficult conversations surrounding contraceptives with patients can look like. “I think it's just our obligation to make sure that they know about all available options, that they're not arriving at this decision that they need to have a surgery because they think it's the only thing that's safe for them or the only thing that will work well for them,” says Dr. Schwartz. Therapist, psychic, what's the difference? That's what we're asking about Sarah's intuition, perception, and ability to read people, and it runs in the family. A political activist/novelist in Japan thinks the answer to Japan's population growth problem involves sterilizing women. Seems like this wouldn't solve the problem, but we do have some alternative suggestions. Sarah is really into the idea of communal living and wonders why communes have such a bad reputation when they might be the solution to a love of societal woes. We hear a new story about our old pal Brian Johnson, who is trying to cheat death and become immortal or something. Despite his claims that his aim is about longevity and health, it seems he's feeling a little self-conscious about his gaunt appearance and is looking to fillers to solve the problem. Sarah explains what Love Island Australia is doing to ensure the cast is safe and that consent for intimacy is explicit, and she is hoping it catches on across reality tv and in real life.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 50% off your first order, head to https://www.smalls.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDYGet an exclusive 20% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYVisit https://www.betterhelp.com/BRAINCANDY today to get 10% off your first month.Get $10 off any order and enjoy free shipping when you subscribe at https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYGIFTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this week's episode of then & now, we present a recording of a recent event hosted by the UCLA History Department, "Why History Matters: Reproductive Rights and Justice." This event brought together experts to explore the far-reaching effects of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision in June 2022. Hosted by Kevin Terraciano, the conversation delves into the historical misuse of legal doctrines to limit reproductive freedoms and calls for a comprehensive reproductive justice framework that extends beyond abortion to include the right to have or not have children and to raise children in safe environments. Professor Cary Franklin critiques the Supreme Court's "history and tradition" test in Dobbs, arguing it distorts historical perspectives on liberty and equality, while Dean Alexandra Minna Stern discusses the lasting impacts of eugenic sterilization on marginalized groups, emphasizing how patterns of reproductive oppression persist today. Professor Elizabeth O'Brien examines Mexico's recent Supreme Court rulings decriminalizing abortion and highlights grassroots activism's role in shaping a broader framework for reproductive rights in Latin America. In the U.S., maternal mortality and preventable deaths have risen sharply since the Dobbs decision, underscoring the panel's call for historical research to inform advocacy as surveillance and criminalization of reproductive health grow. Through these comparative perspectives, the discussion powerfully illustrates how understanding historical contexts can guide efforts to protect and expand reproductive rights in the U.S.Kevin Terraciano is a Professor and the Department Chair of History at UCLA. He specializes in Latin American history, especially Mexico and the Indigenous cultures and languages of central and southern Mexico. Among many books and translations, he is the author of The Mixtecs of Colonial Oaxaca: Ñudzahui History, Sixteenth through Eighteenth Centuries, a comprehensive study of Mixtec society and their adaptation to colonial rule.Cary Franklin is the McDonald/Wright Chair of Law at UCLA and serves as the faculty director of the Williams Institute at UCLA as well as the Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including the Harvard Law Review, the Michigan Law Review, the NYU Law Review, the Supreme Court Review, the Virginia Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal.Alexandra Minna Stern is a professor of English and history and the Dean of UCLA's Division of Humanities. She co-directs the Sterilization and Social Justice Lab, which studies eugenic sterilization practices in the U.S. and their impact on marginalized groups. She is the author of the award-winning Eugenic Nation: Faults and Frontiers of Better Breeding in Modern America, and the author of Telling Genes: The Story of Genetic Counseling in America, which was named a Choice 2013 Outstanding Academic Title in Health Sciences.Elizabeth O'Brien is an Assistant Professor in the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Department of History, specializing in the history of reproductive health in Mexico. Tubal sterilization goes back to the 1880s. The first collaborative review of sterilization effectiveness was the CREST study published in 1996 in the AJOG. But that was with prior sterilization techniques. As a way to update the data researchers looked at the national survey for family growth (NSFG) from 2002 to 2015 to determine failure rates after more modern methods of tubal sterilization. This was published in NEJM Evidence on August 27, 2024. The results... Surprising! In this episode, we will review this new data and contrast it to the landmark CRESTstudy. Also, are you aware that the ACOG endorsed a mathematical formula to allow a patient to undergo tubal sterilization, until 1969? It's true! Listen in for details.
