Frank Schaeffer In Conversation with Artist and Activist Genesis Be, exploring her latest album, Tom Boy, biracial queer intersectionality, and the viral Confederate emblem protest that thrust her into the national spotlight._____LINKSFollow Genesis on:https://www.facebook.com/GenesisBe/https://twitter.com/GenesisBehttps://www.youtube.com/c/GenesisBeOfficial_____In 2016, a young rapper from Mississippi captivated America with a bold theatrical protest against the Mississippi State Flag. The protest went viral. The resulting backlash and press, threw her into the ongoing fight to remove the Confederate emblem from the Mississippi State Flag. Publications such as The Associated Press, New York Times, NY Daily News, ABC News, VICE Impact have featured her, sharing her message of racial healing, gender equality, and youth empowerment. In 2017, she was the subject of a Moral Courage Project documentary "Confederate Pride, White Supremacy & My State Flag" and continues to facilitate civil discourse to improve race relations in her home state Mississippi. In 2020, her collaborative effort saw a historical victory when Mississippi changed its State Flag after flying over 120 years. Genesis Be has recently completed two college tours and two National tours wherein she explores the threats and media push back for her grassroots efforts to unite young Mississippians against White Supremacy. She is also giving audience members tools and exercises to help engage those with opposing views to manifest a solution based outcome, rather than just fighting online. Her intersectionality as a biracial queer woman of color from the deep south, allows her to explore and express concepts that audiences have deemed an extraordinarily “unique and compelling lense.”_____In Conversation… with Frank Schaeffer is a production of the George Bailey Morality in Public Life Fellowship. Join us for a crucial conversation on how we can revive dialogue in a polarized time with the legendary Irshad Manji, prize-winning professor, New York Times bestselling author, winner of Oprah's "boldness" award, and founder of the Moral Courage Project! Manji believes America's true founding genius is diversity of thought. Having experienced censorship and prejudice in her own life, Manji brings her experiences as a refugee from Africa, a Muslim immigrant to the U.S., and a scholar of moral courage to her passionate advocacy for turning disagreement into engagement. In the United States, discord appears to be hitting emergency levels. Yet for Manji, it isn't cultural or racial differences that make an enterprise more or less successful. "Honest diversity" recognizes that we are all multifaceted and worthy of being heard, not herded. In a conversation moderated by IVY CEO and YPO Metro NY Chapter Chair Beri Meric, Manji will share key lessons to overcome tribalism and why we can never win by labeling those who disagree with us. This will be a taboo-busting conversation about identity, power, and finding common ground even while standing one's ground. Together with Manji, we'll chart a path for how to open the hearts of opponents for the sake of sustainable progress.
The Roy Green Show Podcast - The Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs issued a news release that UBCIC Stands with Jody Wilson Raybould. However in recent days, a number of indigenous Chiefs across Canada have expressed disappointment that JWR declined an offer from Justin Trudeau to become the Indigenous Affairs Minister. Roy is joined by Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, of the UBCIC, to discuss the JWR/Trudeau/SNC-Lavalin situation. Pierre Poilievre, CPC MP and Finance critic writes in a new opinion piece that the federal government can lift a government contract procurement ban on convicted corporate criminals with the stroke of a pen. In fact, the Trudeau government had already done with SNC in December, 2015, even though they had already been banned for the original corruption charges. MP Poilievre elaborates on this. Irshad Manji is the Canadian winner of Oprah's Chutzpah Award, a bestselling author, winner of the World Economic Forum 'Young Global Leader' award and founder of the Moral Courage Project. Manji's new book, ‘Don't Label Me,' is a guide for fostering dialogue and celebrating diversity in our politically polarized climate. Did Jody Wilson-Raybould drop the ball by not reporting PMO/PM interference over SNC immediately? Duff Conacher, co-founder of Democracy Watch, addressed this in a Toronto Star op ed column. He argues that as Attorney General for Canada, Jody Wilson-Raybould should have reported to the RCMP that she was being interfered with as soon as the interference from PMO/Trudeau began. - Guests: Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, of the UBCIC Pierre Poilievre, CPC MP, Finance Critic. MCP’s founder first came to prominence for her work as an Islamic reformer, and her book The Trouble with Islam was an international bestseller. Join me and Irshad for a wonderful conversation, where we both nudge and challenge each other. Despite some pretty fundamental differences (belief vs. disbelief), Irshad has always been an inspiration to me. She is someone I admire a great deal, even if we don't always agree. In her compassion and open mindedness towards others with differing viewpoints she sets an excellent example on how we can build bridges. Her warmth towards and solidarity with Ex Muslims is something we desperately need more of! Coming from an atheist perspective, I still realise that not everyone can be realistically expected to abandon belief and religion... for that reason, I think supporting genuine, honest reformists is incredibly important. We need people both leading the way outside the framework of religion and also those carving out a more modern path within that framework. Through these combined methods we can begin to chip away at fundamentalism and orthodoxy. The director of the Moral Courage Project says so-called “respect” for Muslims is often lined with fear and “low expectations” of those practising the faith.
