After it got revealed that multiple MPs and other government officials were either wittingly or unwittingly helping foreign governments intervene in our democratic process, the Liberals have said they won't reveal who the alleged culprits are. A gratuitous attack on immigrants by Ford, or an elected politician speaking his mind and perhaps echoing what many have been thinking? What do Canadians want from their elected officials? Doug Ford bluntness or statements such as the one made by prime minister Justin Trudeau who following the arson attack on the Shara Tzedeck synagogue in Vancouver offered only "a synagogue was attacked last night in Vancouver in another disgusting act of antisemitism. We cannot let this hate or these acts of violence stand. This is not the Canada we want to be." What do Canadians want from their politicians as response to Jew-hatred and acts of terrorism such as shooting at Jewish schools and arson at synagogues? Guest: Darrell Bricker. CEO. On Friday, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre published an op-ed criticizing Canadian businesses' use of lobbyists. He's also called out the Liberals for high-priced fundraisers and "undue handouts” to the business lobby. But since Poilievre became leader, dozens of federal lobbyists have also paid to attend the roughly 50 private fundraising events he's spoken at.So despite all the critiques of big money and lobbying in politics, why do they still seem to be everywhere? How has lobbying shifted power in our democracy? And if parties are concerned, why haven't any of them made bigger efforts to reform it? Duff Conacher has been pushing for MPs to close lobbying loopholes for almost three decades. He's a co-founder of Democracy Watch, a non-profit advocating for government accountability. In a couple of weeks, voters in Fogo Island-Cape Freels district will go to the polls in a byelection to replace the late Derrick Bragg. Sometime after that, Baie Verte-Green Bay electors will choose a successor to retired MHA Brian Warr. But in this province, there are no limits on corporate or union donations, and Democracy Watch says that's a problem. Danson spoke with me about this and assured his work for the families always has been and always will be pro bono. Guest: Tim Danson. Lawyer for the French and Mahaffy families.
