Most people assume sleep breaks wudu — but is that always the case? In this episode of al-Muwatta, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explores a narration from Umar ibn al-Khattab (Kitab at-Taharah, Hadith 10) and walks through seven major scholarly views on the impact of sleep on wudu. From deep sleep to light naps, sitting to lying down — the rulings differ, and so do the reasons behind them. Towards the end, the lesson dives deep into the evidences brought by those who argue that sleep does not break wudu — and the detailed responses to that view. An eye-opening discussion every student of knowledge needs to hear. Take a deep dive into the issue of whether reciting Surah Al-Faatihah is from the pillars of the prayer, is it obligatory or is it just mustahabb? Is the negation of it being absent in the salaah the negation of its existence, it's correctness or it's completeness? What are some of the arguments the madhab of the ahnaaf bring to prove it isn't a pillar? How do they view the hadith of 'Ubaadah ibn Saamit? Enjoy the discussion Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan has on all these above points and more, in this episode of the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik. Abdullah ibn Masood (ra) Session 56 Ibn Ummi Abd - The Son of The Mother of The Servant The Jurist of This Ummah The Master of The Secrets Be like the skillful physician and apply the ointment only on the sore spot' (Muwatta). Ibn Masood, his students & Hudayfah (ra). When someone is raised to the status of spiritual master, they should not sit back and rest, Surah 7 v99. Amongst the major sins are... Associating others with Allah SWT... Feeling secure against the deep devising of Allah SWT... despairing of the Soothing Mercy of Allah SWT, Surah 12 v87. The example of the one who feels safe against the deep devising of Allah SWT is the one who transgressors and hopes for forgiveness (ibn Abee Haatim). The believer perfoms pious deeds all the while fearing rejection (Ibn Jarir).
Abdullah ibn Masood (ra) Session 43 Ibn Ummi Abd - The Son of The Mother of The Servant The Jurist of This Ummah The Master of The Secrets Ibn Masood (ra) and his ruling regarding a widowed woman who did not have a dowry set. 'Judge according to the judgment of the pious....if you cannot then motion tactfully... ' (Tabarani). 'During the time of the companions... that was the time of the scholars, few that asked, givers that are many and deeds are leading desires. Later a time will come with few scholars and many sermons, many that ask and few that give.... desires will lead actions' (Muwatta).
The Divine Mercy Allah SWT is well pleased with a servant who says, O Lord Forgive me only you can Forgive (Abu Dawood). Allah SWT says, call upon Me and ask Me as often as you wish, I will forgive you and I don't mind... (Tirmidhi). 3 Gifts from The Night Ascension, Salah, last verses of Surah Al Baqara and forgiveness for those who avoid Shirk ( Saheeh Muslim). The Sahaba would often say, Allah SWT & The Messenger are more Merciful to us than our own selves (Muwatta). Hassan Al Basri (rah) is taught Tawheed from a washer-woman.

After graduating from Blaine High School, he went on to attend the University of Washington and in 2004 completed a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. During his study at the university, he was active on campus, serving as the president of the UW Muslim Students Association. After 9/11 he was also listed by the University of Washington as an expert on Islam and was invited to address various groups from all walks of life from universities to high schools to community groups as well as all forms of media (TV, Radio, Newspaper, Internet). After graduation, Shaykh Hamzah went on to pursue traditional Islāmic studies, which took him to a number of countries, including Syria and Egypt where he studied the Arabic language, Morocco, Mauritania, and UAE, where he studied the madhhab of Imām Mālik, grammar, usul al-hadith, and the two renditions of the qira'ah of Imam Nāfi', Warsh and Qālūn, and finally, Pakistān where he had the opportunity to study tafsīr, Usūl al-Hadīth, Hadīth, ‘Ilm al-Rijāl and Hanafī Fiqh. All of these studies culminated in him receiving an Ijāzat al-Tadrīs, literally meaning “a license to teach” which is the equivalent in Pakistānī Islāmic seminaries to a MA in Arabic and Islāmic studies, as well as an unbroken chain of transmission by which to narrate the Hadīth of such books as the Muwatta' of Imām Mālik, the Sihāh al-Sittah (Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Nasā'ī, and Ibn Mājah), and the Sharh Ma'ānī al-Athār of Imām al-Tahāwī. After his return to the United States, Shaykh Hamzah spent five years as the resident scholar of the Thawr Institute, a non-profit religious and educational organization based in Seattle, Washington, teaching, giving khutbahs in local Masājid, and traveling through America promoting the knowledge and practice of the sunnah. In parallel with his work at Thawr, he worked closely with Islamic Relief, CAIR Seattle, and a number of other non-profit organizations that serve the Muslim Community. He is currently the resident scholar for Ribāt, a center for learning and remembrance in the Midwest United States. ⏰ New episode every week!
Two thirds of Imam Malik's Muwatta covers matters of muamalat, it is therefore critical to the Deen of Islam. Why then has it lost its importance in our time? This question is put to Shaykh Umar Vadillo, the expert on applying the commercial parameters defined in the Muwatta to modern financial practice. The conversation leads from the reality of the term 'Islamisation' to where we should be setting our sights as Muslims in the 21st Century to revive muamalat and by doing so revive Islam. Music by Ian Cattanach
The reality of Islam is in its being put into action and no example is closer to the source than the practise of the first generations in Madinah as highlighted by Prof Yasin Dutton in his book The Origins of Islamic Law. This conversation covers the importance of Madinan Amal in the context of Imam Malik and his Muwatta and how we can draw learnings from this example for our present time. Barakallahu fikum.
Assalamu alaykum,As I begin my own spiritual journey, I want to hear from those who have taken this path before me. This podcast focuses on them and listening to their stories — uninterrupted. My name is Hebah Masood and I invite you to reflect on the trajectories of their lives, and the guidance and blessings provided by Allah swt along that journey.Ustadh Tariq Ameer grew up in a family that was part of the Nation of Islam and then made the transition to Sunni Islam with WD Muhammed. His own journey began with the Muslim Student's Association at Morehouse, a historically black men's college, in Atlanta. Once he started on his path he was able to learn how to read Arabic in one week and began studying part time. He would eventually follow the path of his teacher Ustadh Jamal Hysaw to Tarim, Yemen. He is currently a prison chaplain with the New Jersey Department of Corrections and a student at Bayan Islamic Graduate School. He also teaches at New Brunswick Islamic Center with Safina Society in NJ, the Muslim Education and Converts Center of America in NYC and his own institute based out of Newark, Al-Muwatta.Listen as he gives a rich and detailed description about living and studying in Hadhramaut, Yemen and learning from teachers who exemplify Prophetic character. He also talks about his important work as a prison chaplain and giving dawah to those who are incarcerated a segment of society many of us rarely think about. My sincere apologies for the poor sound quality for the first half hour.Ustadh Tariq's story intersects with many familiar names: Habib Omar, Habib Hashim bin Sahl, Habib Tahir Al Attas, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Siraj Wahaj, Shaykh Suhaib Webb, Ustadh Jamal Hysaw, Imam Adeyinka 'Muhammad' Mendes, Shaykh Khalil Abdur-Rashid, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, Imam Abdul Malik, Shaykh Hamza Karamali, Shaykh Amin Buxton, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus, Dr. Shadee Elmasry, Shaykh Yusuf Weltch, Shaykh Zane Abdo, Imam Rasul Suluki and Atiba Jones-Also available on most other major podcast streaming services including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts, Castbox and Podbay.-Do you enjoy this podcast?
