In this powerful and informative episode of The People's Podcast by Ismail, I sit down with Fauzia Deen, an activist lawyer and civilian board member of the Fairfax County Police Civilian Review Board in Virginia. Fauzia brings deep insight into the role of civilian oversight in policing and the ongoing work required to build accountability, transparency, and trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Our conversation explores Fauzia's personal journey into activism and law, what motivated her to serve on the civilian review board, and the real challenges faced when civilians are tasked with holding powerful systems accountable. She breaks down how the board functions, why civilian involvement matters, and what meaningful police reform looks like beyond slogans and headlines. This episode is an honest, necessary discussion about justice, civic responsibility, and the importance of community voices in shaping public safety. Fauzia Deen's work reminds us that change often happens at the local level-and that informed, engaged civilians play a critical role in that process. Sacred Knowledge (S1) Hasan al-Basri (r.h) said the true scholars have these signs; They are Zaahids, they yearn for the Akhirah, they deeply understand the Deen and they are immense in their worship. The Messenger ﷺ advised Ali رضي الله عنه: “Consult with the fuqaha and the worshippers. Do not give your own opinion”. What is knowledge without worship? You have planted the tree but bore no fruit. Miracles involving Imam Abu Hanifa (r.h) take place.
Sacred Knowledge (S3) The Messenger ﷺ: “It [i.e knowledge] is wasted when you address it to someone not worthy of it”. By supporting the Deen, I.e through Dawah, teaching, charity etc, you will be supported by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Surah [3:160]: “If Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى helps you, none can overcome you”.

Making Deen Fun at Home: A Holiday Chat with Apa Habiba Bobat Pathan by Radio Islam
The Dunya pushes you: "Earn more. Climb higher. Secure your future." Your heart quietly asks: "But when will you seek knowledge? What about the Akhirah?" If you've ever watched your commitment to seeking knowledge fade while life pulls you in every direction… if you've ever stared at your week and wondered when your Iman slipped through the cracks… this poem was written for you. Welcome to our new series on the Ta'iyyah of Abu Ishaq al-Ilbiri - a poem so striking that scholars across generations instructed their students to memorise it. Not because it's beautiful poetry, but because it slaps you awake. Taught by Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble, this series takes you into a masterpiece that speaks to the modern Muslim student - the one juggling university, work, household, and trying to hold onto their Deen in a world that doesn't make it easy. This isn't just admonition. It's not a Sheikh telling you "you're doing it wrong." It's a father confessing to his son: "These are the mistakes I made. These are the attachments that cost me. Don't repeat them. Take the path I should have taken." The poem revolves around three unshakeable truths: Zuhd - turning away from a Dunya designed to capture you Seeking Knowledge - the treasure that fills the void when you stop chasing wealth and status Purifying the Soul - Tawbah, return, and filling your heart with what Allah loves In Episode 1, Ustadh Muhammad introduces the poem's background, its author's remarkable story, and begins unpacking the very first line: "The days shatter your heart, piece by piece..." Why does the poem begin with the heart, not the body, not time, but your heart? What happens when Iman wears out like old clothing? And what are the five actions that can renew a broken heart? This episode sets the stage for a journey that will challenge every student of knowledge, every person who's felt the weight of "I'm not doing enough," and every Muslim who knows deep down: the dunya is winning, and I need to fight back. Born Muslim or a revert for years. Praying five times a day. Yet you still Google “is my prayer valid?” at every mistake in Salah. You trade daily but barely know the forms of Riba. You make business deals without learning the rulings of Buyu'. You'll debate world politics with confidence, but when it comes to Taharah or the fundamentals of the Deen? Silence. The scholars of Islam memorised on their deathbeds, still learning until their last breath. Meanwhile, you keep putting it off, living as if knowledge is for “later,” while every day takes you closer to meeting Allah. Allah raises the people of knowledge above all others. So what are you waiting for? In this reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unveils the one reason you were created, exposes why “ChatGPT fatwas” and shortcuts are ruining your Deen, and revives the tried and tested method of seeking Islamic knowledge that the Ummah has forgotten. Don't let another day slip away. Every delay is meeting Allah with less. Watch now, and make this the day your journey begins. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Yemeni political analyst Maysaa Shuja al-Deen joins William Law as they discuss the smouldering war between the Huthis and Israel. Abdul-Malik al-Huthi has used Gaza to strengthen his iron control and to enhance his reputation as the man who stands up to Netanyahu. But with the Israelis acting with impunity the stakes grow ever higher with the Yemeni people caught between two reckless, arrogant and intransigent leaders. Bij de nu 67-jarige Groenlandse Henriette Berthelsen werd toen zij 13 jaar oud was een spiraal geplaatst. Onvrijwillig. Reageren? In 2021, Netflix released His Dark Material, a Christmas stand-up special by Irish–British comedian Jimmy Carr. The show sparked international outrage. Toward the end of the set, Carr delivered what he called a ‘career ender' – a joke about the Holocaust, in which he described the Nazis' murder of thousands of ‘Gypsies' as a ‘positive'. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, the Auschwitz Memorial, and the UK government condemned the joke as ‘appalling', ‘abhorrent', and ‘racist'; Carr, critics said, was trading on the ‘last acceptable form of racism'. Comedy touches every part of our lives. We tell jokes at the pub, around the dinner table, and by the office coffee machine. We all know someone who makes us laugh – and someone who seems to take things too far. But is there a line when it comes to humour? And if there is, who gets to draw it? Should we suspend our moral judgements when the lights go down and the curtain goes up? Or do jokes, like most speech acts, carry moral weight? To answer these questions, we need to understand the nature of comedy itself – what exactly it is we're responding to when we laugh. Humour might be a release of nervous tension, a playful disruption of expectations, or – more troublingly, if it applies to Carr's joke – a means of asserting social superiority. No doubt, comedy has the power to shape our culture and perceptions. But, as we'll find out, it also tells us something about who we are, who we ought to be, and the things we value most. We live in a time where Muslims can lift 200kg at the gym but struggle to lift a blanket for Fajr. Where hearts drown in endless scrolling, doubts, and desires. Where practising Islam is mistaken for harshness, or where perfection is demanded until people burn out and give up. But Allah never asked you to be perfect. He asked you to be steadfast. To have Istiqamah. What does that really mean today? How do you stay on the straight path when temptations, distractions, and pressure to imitate others are everywhere? How do you protect your heart and actions - the very things Allah looks at - when they're being pulled in every direction? In this 45-minute talk, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan uncovers the reality of Istiqamah: - Why it's a gift only Allah can give, not something you earn on your own. - Why consistency matters more than perfection. - How desires grow into doubts, and doubts into leaving the Deen. - Why gentleness attracts hearts more than harshness. - How your steadfastness today decides your footing on the Sirat on the Day of Judgement. If you've ever fallen, struggled, or wondered whether you're “good enough” to stay firm on this Deen, this is for you.
