We're into the 'laylatul qadr' nights of Ramadan, the nights of power, and the perfect backdrop for our conversation on women's power. How and why should women show up in the public space? Our Ramadan BFF Henrietta Szovati explains the relationship between the spiritual self and the social self, highlighting that we need to be in public to find our qualities being 'chiselled' in interactions with others, including simply showing up and being present for others. We also explore what does 'leadership' mean and how this can take shape for women. And as we think about the end of Ramadan and Eid, she explains how to create a mood board of the kind of power we want to develop by next week. Our special guest this week is Dr Sohaira Siddiqui, the Executive Director of Al Mujadilah, a pioneering centre in Doha, Qatar designed specifically for Muslim women to study, engage in dialogue and worship together. She lays out a vision of Muslim women's power that is rooted in 'stewardship' and has a role for all women, which they can find in their own way and in their context. She draws on her deep study and expertise in understanding Muslim women and Muslim societies. And some real gems from girls Hana and Iman that live in a very different generation - where tech and social media shape their lives in different ways. They talk about the relationship between how people look and their power, the power dynamics that exist within friend groups, and what they feel about leadership. Plus they tell an excellent joke about Hijab & Shoulders, not to be missed! Family friendly listening with a huge helping of Ramadan power. A 'warrior princess' is how this week's special guest Asma Khan - celebrity chef, author and restaurateur - has seen herself and from a young age this has shaped her life and incredible success. Hot off the heels of the King and Queen visiting her restaurant, we hear about what drives her to lift other women up, her self-doubt, why women shouldn't be forever apologising and how she sees food as a way of giving back especially in Ramadan. We continue our conversations about women's power with Henrietta Szovati, our Ramadan BFF. This week it's about power in the home: what are the many different roles women play and how to be our centred selves, the same person whether we are mother, wife, sister, aunt, daughter or more. We consider how culture affects our households and the unique cultures we create in them as well as the value of nourishing and caring. Plus, Hana and Iman are here to share their wisdom in our segment hearing what the girls have to say about power and the home. What makes them feel valued and respected, are their power dynamics between different siblings and parents, and who or what really holds the most power in the home? Their answer might surprise you! Family friendly listening with a huge helping of Ramadan power. Subscribe or follow this podcast to get all future episodes, dropping every Sunday throughout Ramadan. We're back for Week 2 of Ramadan, and our conversations about women's power. Our Ramadan BFF, Henrietta Szovati, tackles the barriers that hold us back from claiming our power: anger, guilt, people pleasing, shame and even abuse. She guides us simply and effectively through the steps to setting healthy boundaries, what it will feel like when we first start to say 'no' and the question we always need to ask ourselves: 'Am I okay with this'? This is essential listening. Former Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Dunya Maumoon, shares her personal insights about Ramadan in the Maldives. A rare woman on a global stage - less than a quarter of ministerial roles globally are held by women - she talks to us about what it means to be a powerful person, why holding true to your values and representing your people informs what she does, and how her faith inspires her. Plus what was it like to speak at the UN. And, in our intergenerational segment, Hana and Iman discuss whether as girls they are expected to behave in certain ways, including keeping the peace. And they go controversial on the subject of having a 'confidence button'. Family friendly listening with a huge helping of Ramadan power. As well as practical tips on what we can do to start identifying and growing our power. Fashion model, creative and filmmaker Mariah Idrissi gives us a glimpse into her Ramadan. She talks to us about how her ideas of power have evolved over a decade of being in the public eye as an influencer and why she thinks power over the self is the most important kind. Plus, this episode brings intergenerational insights as we talk to Hana and Iman about what power means to girls today, and why they think it matters. In fact, this whole series is family-friendly so why not listen along together. Subscribe or follow this podcast to get all future episodes, dropping every Sunday throughout Ramadan. Hamas announces halt in talks until Israel frees Palestinian prisoners "Hamas leader Mahmoud Mardawi announced the resistance group would halt negotiations with Israel until Palestinian prisoners held by Tel Aviv are released. Germany's Christian political alliance declares election victory "Germany's opposition leader, Friedrich Merz, declared victory as projections showed his Christian conservative political alliance securing 28.5 percent of the vote, surging past rivals. Merz urged swift coalition talks to restore Germany's leadership. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party SPD, suffered a historic defeat at 16.5 percent, while the far-right Alternative for Germany AfD, soared to 20.6 percent. Coalition negotiations remain uncertain, with smaller parties struggling to meet the 5 percent threshold. Voter turnout hit a record high of 84 percent." US pushes for Ukraine-Russia peace deal based on Istanbul pact "The US says it is ""very close"" to brokering a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, modeled after the Istanbul Protocol Agreement, says Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff. Speaking to CNN, he stressed that the war was ""provoked"" and must end. Meanwhile, Ukraine has resisted US pressure to withdraw its European-backed UN resolution demanding Russia's withdrawal, according to officials, setting the stage for a high-stakes vote on Monday." CAIR condemn Musk's claim that US Muslim aid groups are terrorists "The Council on American-Islamic Relations CAIR has condemned Elon Musk for amplifying claims that US Muslim aid groups receiving USAID funds are “terrorist organisations.” CAIR warns that such rhetoric fuels Islamophobia and puts Muslim Americans at risk. Musk's post targeted over a dozen nonprofits, including Islamic Relief and Palestine Children's Relief Fund. ""Anyone who sees the word 'Islam' in the name of an American charity and then immediately declares that the charity must be a 'terrorist organisation' is a hateful person,"" CAIR said." Thousands gather in Beirut to mourn Hezbollah leaders killed by Israel "People gathered in Beirut to mourn the late Hezbollah leaders, Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. Hezbollah's Naim Qassem condemned Israel for breaching a ceasefire deal and stressed the group's readiness to defend Lebanon. The funeral comes after a fragile ceasefire, marking the end of intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Despite Israel's delayed withdrawal, Qassem vowed that neither Israel nor the US would pressure Lebanon into submission. The fallen leaders were assassinated in September and October of 2024."

It's Tuesday, June 13th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Christian persecution in Tajikistan Persecution against Christian churches is on the rise in Tajikistan. In May 2022, Sulaymon Davlatzoda, a Tajikistan senior state religious affairs official, told Protestant church leaders that the government would no longer register new churches. Plus, anyone under 18 years of age is prohibited from practicing the Christian faith or taking part in church activities. America's burdensome debt Does the U.S. government have a big debt problem? In the last 12 months, President Biden has racked up another $2.1 trillion in federal debt. That's up from a $438 billion deficit in 2015 when Barack Obama was president which is a 5-fold increase. And that's up from a deficit of $22 billion back in the year 1997, when Bill Clinton was president, representing a 120-fold increase. Regardless of what modern economists say, the wisdom of God in the book of Proverbs reminds us that “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7) Indictment of Trump didn't decrease popularity The present controversies do not appear to be hampering Donald Trump in the Republican race for the presidential nomination. Real Clear Politics has the former president at 53.6% up from 44% back in March. That's a 31.8% lead ahead of Ron DeSantis. And Joe Biden and Donald Trump are neck and neck on the un-favorability rating — both at 55%. Rick Warren objecting to Baptists cutting ties over women pastors The Christian Post reported on Rick Warren's campaign to allow for women pastors in the Southern Baptist Church. Warren's Saddleback church is appealing the Southern Baptist Convention's decision to cut ties with the church over the issue. Christianity Today claims that 73% of American Evangelicals are okay with women preaching in a Sunday service. And a recent survey conducted by Lifeway Research found that 55% of Evangelical pastors are okay with women serving as a senior pastor in a church. And the trend continues. Research conducted in 2016 found 21% of professional clergy in the US were women, up from 2.3% in 1960. 57% of Protestant churches prepared for active shooter A Lifeway survey discovered that 57% of American Protestant churches have prepared for an active shooter incident on church premises. And 54% claim to have armed church members as part of the plan. That's up from 45% claiming to have armed church members attending services back in 2019. However, 21% of Protestant churches do not allow firearms on church property at all. The survey did not ask if the church was ready for spiritual attacks. Ephesians 6:13 says, “Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” And 1 John 4:4 reminds God's people that “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 100 African leaders to U.S.: Respect our Biblical values Increasingly, African nations are the target of the Western woke, pro-abortion, and anti-family agenda through U.S. foreign assistance programs. Representing Bethany Christian Services, American Red Cross, Oxfam, International Rescue Committee, Islamic Relief, Catholic Relief Services, Care USA, Save the Children, and World Vision, an organization called Interaction.org lobbies the federal government for diverting funds towards these types of programs. InterAction explicitly promotes a universal “right” to abortion and increased funding for “women's rights and feminist organizations.” Last week, in light of these Western commitments, more than 100 African parliamentarians and religious leaders from 15 countries sent a letter to the U.S. Senate and House leadership, requesting that Africa's pro-life and pro-family values be respected. There was special concern about President Biden's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding. The U.S. spends $40-$50 billion per year in foreign aid. Fox News trying to censor Tucker Carlson on Twitter And finally, will Twitter replace Fox News as a go-to for conservative Americans? Tucker Carlson has topped 115 million Twitter streamings or downloads for his first commentary on Twitter. His second commentary, issued on June 8th, is pushing 55 million. After booting Carlson from their Fox News prime time programming, the self-styled conservative news organization experienced a prime time ratings drop of 37%, according to Deadline.com. Fox News is registering at 1.42 million views now -- down from 3 million when Tucker Carlson was on his game. Axios reports that Fox News has responded to Carlson's Twitter activity with a cease and desist letter. Carlson's lawyers have responded with this statement: “Doubling down on the most catastrophic programming decision in the history of the cable news industry, Fox is now demanding that Tucker Carlson be silent until after the 2024 election. Tucker will not be silenced by anyone. ... He is a singularly important voice on matters of public interest in our country, and will remain so." Print story CA eager to call parents “abusive” who don't affirm transgender kids California AB 957, now before the State assembly, would amend the code to give the state the authority to remove children from their homes if their parents refuse to “affirm their gender,” reports LifeSiteNews. Those parents would be categorized as “abusive.” It would also require schools, churches and other organizations to follow suit or face repercussions for 'impacting the health, safety and welfare of [a] child.' Nicole Pearson, founder of the Facts Law Truth Justice law firm, told the Daily Signal: “This is a horrifying bill for children, and for parents and guardians not just in California, but across the country. William speaks to Bibi Bahrami, founder of the Islamic Centre of Muncie, about that episode and her subsequent friendship with Richard McKinney. This is a special episode to urge listeners to donate to the ongoing relief effort in Turkey and Syria. I interview two expert guests about the situation with a particular focus on the city of Antakya (Byzantine Antioch).Andrea De Giorgi is a Professor of Classical Studies at Florida State University. He specializes in Roman urbanism and visual culture and has written many books and articles on the subject. He co-authored the fantastic book Antioch. A History which I thoroughly recommend. Dr. De Giorgi has also directed excavations and surveys in Turkey, Syria, Georgia, Jordan, and the UAE. Since 2013, he has codirected the Cosa Excavations in Italy and, since 2021, the Coastal Caesarea Archeological Project in Israel; currently, he is studying the 1930s Antioch and Daphne collections at the Princeton University Art Museum.Katherine Pangonis is a historian and author of the book ‘Queens of Jerusalem' who I interviewed back in episode 238 of the podcast. Her second book - to be published this summer - is called ‘Twilight Cities: Lost Capitals of the Mediterranean.' In it she explores famous cities from antiquity like Tyre, Carthage and Ravenna. Cities who once ruled whole Empires and were littered with magnificent buildings but have been somewhat forgotten. One of the cities she covers is Antioch. She also hosts the podcast - Women Who Dared to Write. This is an appeal for you to donate to one of the various charities who are rushing to the scene at this moment to help the survivors. Lucinda and Russ are joined by Keith Valentine, chief executive of Fight for Sight, to look behind the scenes of the sight loss research charity's ongoing merger with the Vision Foundation.Keith describes how the merger was motivated by a quest for growth, responding to the absence of a national funder that combined scientific research with service delivery for visually impaired people. He talks about the operational practicalities of bringing two organisations together, as well as his personal experience of being the only visually impaired chief executive working in the national sight loss sector. The interview is preceded by a discussion on the findings of the recently published Good Merger Index, which revealed a sharp dip in the number of charity mergers in the past year. And Third Sector's news editor, Steven Downes, provides analysis on his top stories of the week, from Islamic Relief's response to the Turkey-Syria earthquake to the fake football ticket sale by scammers impersonating the Sick Children's Trust.Tell us what you think of the Third Sector podcast! Rescuers are raising concerns that freezing conditions could delay efforts to find survivors across Syria and Turkey. Agencies and rescue workers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after thousands of buildings collapsed in both countries. More than 11,000 people are now known to have been killed, and in freezing temperatures, the death toll will continue to rise. The first 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday morning, while people were asleep, and was followed by a 7.5 magnitude tremor hours later. The Today programme's Mishal Husain and Nick Robinson spoke to reporter Anna Foster, who is in Kahramanmaras, the epicentre of the earthquake and Salah Aboulgasem from Islamic Relief. The BBC's Middle East Correspondent, Tom Bateman, reports from Adana in southern Turkey.
Thousands of people have died after two devastating earthquakes caused widespread destruction in Turkey and Syria. As the World Health Organization warns casualties could exceed 20,000, aftershocks, freezing temperatures and damaged roads are hampering efforts to reach and rescue those affected. On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson joins Sky News correspondent Yousra Elbagir, who is in Gaziantep, a city in southern Turkey near the epicentre of the first earthquake, and speaks to Islamic Relief worker Mohammed Hamza in northwest Syria about the additional challenges faced by aid workers in a war zone.Warning: This podcast contains graphic descriptions of the aftermath of the earthquakes throughout. Date: 06-12-2022 Join Zakarriya Sheikh, Saad Ahmed and Sharjeel Ahmed for Tuesday's show from 4-6pm where we will be discussing: “British Muslims" and "Protests" British Muslims More Likely to Face Poverty The charity Islamic Relief has warned that the cost of living crisis has hit the Muslim community particularly hard in comparison to the non-Muslim population. Citing research from the Muslim Council of Britain, the charity said that an estimated 50% of Muslim households in the UK are living in poverty. Apparently, poverty is more frequent among people of certain ethnic groups who identify as Muslim. So, is this an ethnic rather than a religious phenomenon? Join us, as we discuss "British Muslims: more likely to be facing poverty?" Protests Protests are taking place all around us and of all kinds. Whether they be a peaceful march or a blaring riot, they all have one aim: to have their views heard. Do they achieve what they are looking for? Join us for the upcoming hour as we explore the efficacy of these protests and find out what they really achieve. GUESTS: Arif Ahmad (Volunteer at Humanity First Food Bank in Mirfield) Imam Rabeeb Mirza (Serving in MTA International) PRODUCERS: Khansa Razzaq and Ayza Mahmood
Lucinda and Russ are joined by Zia Salik, head of fundraising at Islamic Relief, to discuss some of the innovations behind the charity's record growth figures over the past four years.Zia explains how a shift before the pandemic to increase digital engagement with younger donors allowed the charity to adapt to the suspension of in-person fundraising events. He describes the organisation's willingness to take risks on volunteer-led innovations, including a cake-selling initiative which has become a regular feature in the charity's Ramadan campaigns, and how taking a relationship-based fundraising approach has paid off. This week's Good News Bulletin covers the news that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos plans to give most of his $124bn fortune to philanthropic causes during his lifetime. And Russ reports back from the Association of Charitable Foundations' annual conference.Tell us what you think of the Third Sector podcast! Flood waters are slowly receding in Pakistan, but the crisis persists for many — in particular pregnant women and new mothers. The CBC's Europe Correspondent Margaret Evans tells us what she saw on a recent trip to the country's southeastern Sindh province; and we discuss the challenges around childbirth and health care with Hiba Siddiqui, a humanitarian worker with Islamic Relief.
With a third of the country under water and more than 1,000 people dead, the government of Pakistan seeks international help to battle the devastating damage caused by monsoon rains. Asif Sherazi, Islamic Relief's director for that country, tells us how the situation looks like in Peshaware, one of the most affected areas. The International Monetary Fund has approved a $1.5bn-loan for Pakistan. The funds are a crucial lifeline for an economy that was already struggling before the floods, as economist Ammar Khan explains from Karachi. The leaders of the European Union are preparing more emergency measures to try and curb soaring energy bills, but fossil fuel producers expect high prices to stay. We hear more form Suzanne Lynch from Politico in Brussels. Can nuclear power present a path to cleaner, cheaper energy? The disposal of nuclear waste, which can stay radioactive for thousands of years, has always made many wary of investing in more nuclear reactors. But now Sweden says it has found a way to storage these residues. The BBC's Theo Leggett reports. The Rings of Power is the latest release from the Lord of the Rings' saga. Based on events that happened long before Frodo started his journey to Mordor, this Amazon production has become the most expensive series ever made. LA Times's entertainment reporter Anousha Sakoui tells us more. And we discuss the latest developments in the markets with Peter Jankovskis from Arbor Financial Services in Chicago.
As Afghanistan digs out from one of its deadliest earthquakes in decades, we talk to Islamic Relief aid workers Ajmal Majboor and Mohammed Golam Sorwar about efforts to help those in hard-hit, remote areas.

After graduating from Blaine High School, he went on to attend the University of Washington and in 2004 completed a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. During his study at the university, he was active on campus, serving as the president of the UW Muslim Students Association. After 9/11 he was also listed by the University of Washington as an expert on Islam and was invited to address various groups from all walks of life from universities to high schools to community groups as well as all forms of media (TV, Radio, Newspaper, Internet). After graduation, Shaykh Hamzah went on to pursue traditional Islāmic studies, which took him to a number of countries, including Syria and Egypt where he studied the Arabic language, Morocco, Mauritania, and UAE, where he studied the madhhab of Imām Mālik, grammar, usul al-hadith, and the two renditions of the qira'ah of Imam Nāfi', Warsh and Qālūn, and finally, Pakistān where he had the opportunity to study tafsīr, Usūl al-Hadīth, Hadīth, ‘Ilm al-Rijāl and Hanafī Fiqh. All of these studies culminated in him receiving an Ijāzat al-Tadrīs, literally meaning “a license to teach” which is the equivalent in Pakistānī Islāmic seminaries to a MA in Arabic and Islāmic studies, as well as an unbroken chain of transmission by which to narrate the Hadīth of such books as the Muwatta' of Imām Mālik, the Sihāh al-Sittah (Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Nasā'ī, and Ibn Mājah), and the Sharh Ma'ānī al-Athār of Imām al-Tahāwī. After his return to the United States, Shaykh Hamzah spent five years as the resident scholar of the Thawr Institute, a non-profit religious and educational organization based in Seattle, Washington, teaching, giving khutbahs in local Masājid, and traveling through America promoting the knowledge and practice of the sunnah. In parallel with his work at Thawr, he worked closely with Islamic Relief, CAIR Seattle, and a number of other non-profit organizations that serve the Muslim Community. He is currently the resident scholar for Ribāt, a center for learning and remembrance in the Midwest United States. ⏰ New episode every week!

Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the Nakba. At the same time, the Israeli occupation has once again increased their assault on Palestinian civilians in east Jerusalem and Gaza. We were honoured to be joined by guests from Palestinian youth Movement Toronto and some of the core organizers behind Palestine Resolution 2021 at the NDP Convention. As of Friday MP Jack Harris the NDP has called for an emergency debate, thousands of Canadians have written elected officials also voicing our disagreement with our tax money and our government's involvement in the occupation and violent dispossession of Palestinian people and Palestine.
