As guitarist Duane Denison told PG's Nick Millevoi in our feature story, the key to the album's vitality—and reviving the band's brutal sound—was simple: “Practice loud.” Ahead of a hotly anticipated U.K. tour celebrating the record, the band gathered at SIR's rehearsal space in Nashville to do exactly that. PG's Chris Kies stopped by to see what Denison and bassist David Wm. Sims were stuffing into their suitcases for the trip across the pond.Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/the-jesus-lizard-2025Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPGDon't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:15 - Duane Denison Playing Intro1:08 - Celebrating Band's Longevity & New Album Rack2:18 - Duane Denison's Powers Electric Type A5:04 - Why Duane Denison Practices Really Loud6:43 - What Duane Denison Needs From His Guitar Tone7:44 - The Jesus Lizard Tunings8:42 - Duane Denison's Core Tone (Hide and Seek)10:02 - Duane Denison's Chorus Tone11:42 - Duane Denison's Delay & Unison Notes12:53 - Duane Denison's "Oddball" Sound13:44 - How Duane Denison Uses Space in His Guitar Playing16:55 - Duane Denison's Stringjoy Strings & Picks18:37 - How Duane Denison Warms Up & Stays Limber19:44 - Duane Denison's Victory VS100 Super Sheriff21:25 - Duane Denison's Line 6 Helix Floor23:25 - Duane Denison's Soloing Technique ("Grind")25:35 - What Still Excites Duane Denison About Guitar?27:03 - "Puss" Live27:42 - John Bohlinger & XPND Pedalboard28:33 - David Wm. Premier Guitar editors Jason Shadrick and Nick Millevoi are arguing over which 100 guitarists you should know. Together, they dig deep into each player's catalog to uncover what makes them unique, influential, and important. First up: Andy Summers. For the debut episode we're covering Police guitarist and all-around maestro Andy Summers. From the iconic trio's Outlandos D'Amour to Synchronicity, Summers changed the game for modern guitar playing with his groundbreaking use of modulation—shoutout chorus and flange!—and arpeggiated suspended chords, ultimately defining the sound of the 1980s. Post-Police, Summers' jazz-focused instrumental work has proven deeply influential and wide ranging.Get at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.com / 319-423-9734Sponsored by Electro-Harmonix: http://ehx.comPodcast powered by Sweetwater. I interviewed Nick Millevoi just over a year ago, but when his new album, Digital Reaction, came out, a lot of new questions started popping into my head. Then, he shared the video for "Spins of the Axis" and mentioned it's inspiration from the movie RAD, a favorite of mine as a kid that I a) hadn't thought about it years (decades!?) and b) thought nobody else had seen (I had no idea it was re-released in 2020), and so I knew I needed to do a Seltzer Salon with him. Nick is one of the best guitarists on the planet, but it's the way he uses his skill and technique to explore unexpected zones and, perhaps most notably, have some damn fun always grabs me. Digital Reaction is an absolute joy to listen to. We're so stoked to have Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For guitarist Nick Millevoi, all manner of music can be a source of inspiration, including bachelor-pad “exotica” albums of the 1950s, surf-rock records of the '60s or even old Hollywood cowboy tunes – at least if those influences are put into a modernist compositional and improvisational blender. Millevoi's usual outfit, the Crazy Horse-meets-Coltrane band Desertion Trio, has released four ultra-potent albums since 2016. But he was inspired by his nostalgic sonic fascinations to compose a fun set of tunes to perform with frequent keyboard partner Ron Stabinsky, dubbing their duo project Grassy Sound. The pair's debut album of those songs – The Sounds of Grassy Sound – will be released, digitally and on vinyl, via Destiny Records on April 22, 2022. The disc features such Millevoi-penned highlights as the groovy album-opener “Skylark” and the melody-rich “Lu Fran,” both of which showcase his gritty electric-guitar lyricism and Stabinsky's Hammond B-3 swirl. Then there's “Flitzer,” an essay in bent surf guitar that has a noisy improv section with a Twilight Zone air. The first video from the album is rocking live take on “Flitzer. We talk with Nick about creating noise as music, playing shows creating the most in your face music as possible, life altering music moments, how he had no choice but to be a musician, how he balances his musical career with a day job, and a whole lot more!Check out the new album 'The Sound Of Grassy Sound' on Bandcamp and everywhere music streams! No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 locations in the Portland area or one of the 2 locations in the Denver area!Check out the exclusive, limited edition SMARTWOOL / GRATEFUL DEAD collaboration HERE!!! PART TWO: MARCUS FERREIRA What does it mean to maintain something? How do we practice long-term care for the natural world? Connected by their urgent efforts to tend to the environment, lawyer and Philadelphia-local Marcus Ferreira and eco-artist Aviva Rahmani talk about their varied approaches to eco-activism. Though they work at very different scales — Ferreira walks the streets of South Philly with pruners in his pocket and Rahmani writes symphonies for forests — they are both deeply attuned to the need for ecological restoration. In this conversation, we discuss the necessity of long-term thought, and the effects of planting and maintaining a single tree. In part two of the conversation, Marcus speaks with me about his experiences as a volunteer tree tender, how he fell in love with caring for trees, and exactly what kinds of trees we should be planting and tending to. Music for this episode is by local guitarist and composer Nick Millevoi, from the album Streets of Philadelphia. Check out our website to read more about the guests, and follow their collaborations together. Our guest today, guitarist Nick Millevoi. To quote his bio, “Nick Millevoi is a guitarist and composer whose music searches for the sonic cracks between jazz, rock and roll, noise, and modern composition.” Nick has performed with Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, the duo Archer Spade with trombonist Dan Blacksberg as well as making five full-length albums with the trio Many Arms. Since 2016, Nick's main vehicle is The Desertion Trio, featuring Johnny deBlase on bass and Kevin Shea on drums. Their first two records also featured Jamie Saft on organ and their third, the just-released TWILIGHT TIME on the Long Song label features guest stars Ron Stabinsky on organ and Sun Ra Arkestra vocalist Tara Middleton. It's a collection of radically reworked tunes from the oldies era and has already won notice from Rolling Stone magazine, who listed the new record's title cut as a “Song You Need to Know” in their May issue. Nick has drawn a lot of press over the years, he also writes for a number of guitar magazines, but I never really read his origin story On today's interview we talk about Millevoi's earliest music loves, playing his 8th grade graduation party, confronting the jazz curriculum in college, deflecting law school, touring with Many Arms, the music of Neil Young, Nirvana and Dick Dale, the inspirational Wildwood New Jersey, making the new record and future records he is destined to make.
