This has been a fun annual event to do each year. I enjoy the anticipation, the fun in the forums, and the chance to get something I normally would not pick out myself. I would also say that I am a consumer of Premier Guitar's content and for me this is a small way to support what they do. Of course, not all people feel this way. Many believe it to be a disgrace and an irresponsible way to spend money. Some think it would be better to give the money to charity, some say it's better to support local businesses, and others just don't like the concept. But what potential prizes are there this year? How big are our boxes? Which Tweed Couch co-hosts participated? What did we get in previous years? What did we get this year? Who got the biggest Box of Sad? Can we return it? What is the deal with the GloKnob? And… next year… are we doing it again or is it time to do something else? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Jason, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

Your esteemed hosts of the 100 Guitarists podcast have been listening to Randy Rhoads's body of work since they learned the word “pentatonic.” His short discography with Ozzy Osbourne has been emblazoned on both of our fingertips, and we've each put in our hours working out everything from the “Crazy Train” riff to the fingerpicked intro to “Diary of a Madman.” But in our extended Premier Guitar fam, we have an expert who's been studying Randy's licks since longer than either of us have been alive. On this episode, we're thrilled to be joined by Chris Shiflett—best known to you as the host of Shred with Shifty or as the Foo Fighters's foremost expert on Randy Rhoads. Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/sturgill-simpsonYou might think alt-country veteran Sturgill Simpson would need no introduction by this point in his career, but this year, he set out to reintroduce himself to the world—as Johnny Blue Skies. That's the moniker he created for his new record, Passage du Desir, which was released in July on High Top Mountain. Simpson promised that the album was the first step in a new phase of his creative life; the next was the subsequent tour. Simpson, looking his Waylon Jennings best, met up with Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger before his headlining gig at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Sporting a new-to-him Gibson ES-335 and an army-camo jacket, he told Bohlinger he's not trying to be a star guitarist: “I'm trying to be a much less educated version of Bob Weir,” he grins. The star turn is for the Estonian guitarist Laur Joamets, who handles plenty of leads along with pedal steel. The guitar duo took us through their Blue Skies-era gear, featuring an array of Magnatone amplifiers, guitars old and new, and the simplest pedalboard you'll ever see on an arena stage.Shop Sturgill Simpson's Gear:Dunlop EP103 Echoplex - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LX7gb0Fender Esquire - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Y9XVBRFender Stratocaster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Py1vBYMagnatone Panoramic Stereo - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/y2jrVyMagnatone Varsity Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/yqRmvbMXR Booster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/K0eZGyMXR Tap - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7amJVdPeterson Stomp Classic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjPeterson StroboStomp - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjSource Audio True Spring Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/mOg2vaT-Rex Replica - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/NkM3MqFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/sturgill-simpsonSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Molly Tuttle & D'Addario0:15 - Sturgill Simpson Playing Intro0:55 - John Bohlinger Intro1:13 - Sturgill Simpson's 1962 Gibson ES-3354:13 - 1962 Gibson ES-335 Custom Wiring6:41 - Sturgill Simpson's 1956 Fender Esquire11:17 - Sturgill Simpson's Pedalboard13:09 - Sturgill Simpson's Magnatone Panoramic Stereo Combos16:09 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario16:34 - Laur Joamets' 1974 Fender Telecaster21:34 - Laur Joamets' Fano Guitars PX624:26 - Laur Joamets' Fender Stratocaster26:49 - Laur Joamets' Amps29:28 - Laur Joamets' Pedalboard34:39 - Laur Joamets' Pedal-Steel Guitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #sturgillsimpson #guitarist #guitarplayer #telecaster #music

You've heard him with King Crimson, Talking Heads, David Bowie, and Frank Zappa, among others, and with his pop band the Bears and on his solo recordings and tours. This fall, Adrian is following dates with the Talking Heads-fueled Remain in Light tour, which he co-led with Heads keyboardist and guitarist Jerry Harrison, with the BEAT Tour—a run drawing on his recordings with King Crimson in the '80s: the albums Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. Of course, this is just a small—but extremely potent and influential—portion of his 30-year collaboration with Crimson founder Robert Fripp, who has given BEAT his blessing. But putting this repertoire in the hands of Belew, fellow Crimson alum and super-bassist Tony Levin, the incendiary Steve Vai (playing the guitar role of Fripp), and the Earth-shaking drummer Danny Carey from Tool promises magical performances. It's also one of the year's most-anticipated tours. As I write this, Belew, Levin, Vai, and Carey are rehearsing on the West Coast, and by the time this video posts, they will have played their first BEAT dates. So, word is likely to have spread that Belew has brought some crucial pieces of gear he played with '80s Crimson back into play. They defined an entire era of pop-punk with their 1994 major-label debut, Dookie, then did it all over again 10 years later with the punk-rock-opera American Idiot. This year, Idiot turns 20; Dookie is 30.To celebrate the milestones, Green Day has been blasting through stadiums across North America playing both albums in full, back-to-back, with a few odds and ends from their 30-plus years together, plus choice hits from their 2024 record, Saviors. It's a ton of ground to cover—especially considering each epoch seems to have different and defining sonic characteristics. For the debut episode we're covering Police guitarist and all-around maestro Andy Summers. From the iconic trio's Outlandos D'Amour to Synchronicity, Summers changed the game for modern guitar playing with his groundbreaking use of modulation—shoutout chorus and flange!—and arpeggiated suspended chords, ultimately defining the sound of the 1980s. Post-Police, Summers' jazz-focused instrumental work has proven deeply influential and wide ranging.Get at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.com / 319-423-9734Sponsored by Electro-Harmonix: http://ehx.comPodcast powered by Sweetwater. Universe: “Super Fuzz or Big Muff?”Mudhoney: “Both!”What else would you expect from a band that titled their mischievously visceral '88 debut EP after both pedals (Superfuzz Bigmuff)?Formed in the late '80s by guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner after the dissolution of their band Green River (which included future Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam cofounders Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard), Mudhoney long ago solidified themselves as the Seattle scene's big brothers and tightest pack. Through their 11 LPs, five EPs, and six live albums, Mudhoney has routinely diversified and further defined their eccentric brand of raucous, aggressive, unfiltered rock 'n' roll. Possibly more impressive than the band's wide influence and devoted authenticity is the foursome's bond. Drummer Dan Peters and bassist Matt Lukin (also a founding member of the Melvins) were the rhythmic bedrock for Arm and Turner's exploding-M-80 tones since the beginning. (Arm and Turner have been friends since high school and have been playing off each other since then.) But Lukin left the band in 2001 because tour life became too much, and Guy Maddison has been thundering ever since. To see a group's career that's pushing past 35 years and only have one member swap is as inspirational as it is baffling. How?!“We like each other a lot. We get along. We love what we're doing,” remarks Arm. “Why stop, even if no one gives a shit?”Friendship matters to Arm and Turner, but gear isn't a concern unless it points them in one direction—east. More specifically, toward Detroit, Michigan. And even more specifically, to the Stooges. Both namecheck the livewire band and their raw power several times in our Rig Rundown. However, in a 2018 interview with Premier Guitar, they acknowledged regenerating sounds that echo influences from Neil Young and the Byrds to Devo and the Dead Kennedys. But after chasing “I-Wanna-Be-Your-Dog” sizzle, what else leads them to the gear they use? Has that mentality changed since the late '80s?“If you think about the aesthetics of where we come from—garage punk, and punk rock in general—a lot of it was made with cheap gear, and a lot of it was reclaiming gear that guitarists had kind of dismissed as garbage. Like the Mustang. That was my ultimate guitar back when I was a kid, but it was poo-pooed when I finally got one. I could get them for $150. The Danelectro and Silvertone amps were kind of high-rated garbage when we were getting into them. We based a lot of our sound on cheap gear, so it makes sense to me that I still buy the cheap gear,” concluded Turner. They're still pragmatic about their setups, preferring equipment that's familiar and reliable. Where they chase the dragon is in stompboxes. Turner trusts the Big Muff (his favorite iteration is from the mid-'80s), while Arm's torrid tone burns with a Super Fuzz clone. However, both have additional hot-sauce stompboxes and other effects on their pedalboards that are being auditioned trial by fire.Hours before Mudhoney's headlining set at Nashville's Basement East, Arm and Turner brought PG's Chris Kies onstage to catalog their setups. Turner started the party by talking about a pair of guitars—his battle-tested late-'60s Guild Starfire IV and a recently-acquired Fender Gold...

Who doesn't like getting a package in the mail? The excitement. The anticipation. The dopamine release… Now add to it that what you ordered is a surprise and you've essentially doubled down on all of these emotions. Of course, “doubling down” is an interesting way to put it. The Premier Guitar Mystery Stocking is kinda like gambling. Some people get guitars. Some get pedals. Others get GloKnobs and output jacks… It is those people who have dubbed this similar form of guitar gear roulette as receiving a “Box of Sad”. But… Where is Jason? Did he participate this year? Where does Premier Guitar get this stuff? Does the Grinch pack the boxes? Why did a drummer buy one? Was it worth the $40? Expensive or not, will we even use this stuff? And… Box of Sad… will we do it again next year? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with John, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. This week we are taking inspiration from our listeners Fred Simpson and Olly Browning who both asked similar questions related to tone. Of all the famous guitar rigs there are, who's would we choose to play through if we could, and along with that we talk about tone philosophy, is it good to chase the tone of someone else or does finding your own voice go hand in hand with creating your own sound? Is there a more tantalising topic for guitarists than that which speaks about our beloved guitar tone? I fear not, so, please come along to the Guitar Geek Hangout page on Facebook to have your say, and to see what the other listeners of the Guitar Smarts podcast think all about it.  For links to all our important stuff, check out our LinkTree...https://linktr.ee/guitarsmartsRemember to please subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts, and come to see us on our social media channels below:https://www.facebook.com/Guitarsmartshttps://www.instagram.com/guitar_smarts/Have a very merry time playing guitar this week, and we will see you soon!Support the show

When it comes to jazz virtuoso Julian Lage, you'd be hard-pressed to find an electric guitarist who uses less gear. “Any time I've [used too much equipment], there's an awkwardness where I'm still grappling with the fact that I play here,” he says, gesturing to his guitar, then gesturing to his amp, “but the sound comes out there.” He continues, “It sounds like a joke, but it's been a struggle for me. Any time there's layers or filters or anything, I feel dissociated.” Of course, Lage's rig, which buoys his clean, no-frills tone, makes sense for a musician like himself—whose playing often comes across fluidly, and as gently as his personality. For Lage, that fluidity stems from his conception of music as a language. “I think that the way people speak is often more unfettered,” Lage told Premier Guitar in 2021. “There might not be an obvious correlation between the way people speak in a lecture and the notes on the guitar. But it's just a little stretch of the imagination to see that those are pitches, those are rhythms, those are phrases."On View with a Room, Lage's second release on the hallowed Blue Note Records, he's offering a fresh, bold continuation of the conversation he's created over the years. The album features his latest ensemble, made up of himself, bassist Jorge Roeder, and drummer Dave King—but this time, he's added the legendary Bill Frisell. Together, the musicians help to expand Lage's body of work with performances of 10 of his original compositions. While on tour for the album, Lage invited PG's John Bohlinger to the soundcheck before his show at Brooklyn Bowl inn Nashville to share his insights into why he likes a straightforward rig and “honest” tone. In the interview, Lage elaborates on his three main guitars (his Nachocaster, Collings signature, and '55 Les Paul), explains why he prefers low volume on his amps, and offers a remarkably brief tour of his pedalboard.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Strings.

Rut busting and reconstructing has probably been happening since the discovery of fire and advent of the wheel. Guitarists confront it each time they pick up a new instrument to avoid predictable patterns and tones. Premier Guitar contributor (and recent Rig Rundown subject) Pete Thorn has addressed this by suggesting several practices to approach our beloved 6 strings in a fresh perspective. And recently John Bohlinger recommended playing a different instrument to fertilize musical crops. But what does a guitar-playing producer and multi-instrumentalist do to shake things up for his band's fourth album? Well, for Puscifer's Mat Mitchell and the band's 2020 release, Existential Reckoning, you go back in time 40 years to 8-bit synth sounds and the archaic sampling lurking inside the proto-digital Fairlight CMI.“Part of [the appeal],” Mitchell told PG in a 2021 interview, “is the flow—the way that you work when you're using these tools. It forces you to do things differently. They are very limited, and being creative within very set boundaries is really good.” And being the creative force he is, Mitchell found gold in the antiquated sounds and tech.“They sound very unique,” he explains. “Of course, you can sample one and put it in a laptop, but it's different. All the voices are separate hardware. When you hit a note, it is bouncing around between [processor] cards, so you can hit a note five times and it may sound different all five times. There are all these little things that affect the way it sounds when you're performing, which is a very different sound from what you get when you sample.”But he would never tour with this digital dino, so how does Mitchell recreate 8-bit tones in a performance setting? Thankfully, moments ahead of the audience filling the pews of Nashville's iconic Ryman Auditorium, Puscifer's aural architect welcomed PG's Chris Kies for a chat about how Existential Reckoning's inspiration took him back to the future, and how his live rig has metamorphized and been miniaturized with contemporary gear to realistically represent those superannuated sounds.Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard.

He's toured the world backing Chris Cornell, Don Henley, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, and Japanese rock icon Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi (even performing at Mt. Fuji for over 100,000 fans on the biggest concert stage ever assembled in Japan). For a self-proclaimed “guitar nerd” (check out Pete's 2011 album under the same name), it was a 21st century guitarist's goal. After that, what does one do in between tours to stay busy and relevant in a modern world? You become a beloved YouTuber, of course! His channel is a great destination for gear demos and comparisons, but Pete's content stands out with his simple, and east-to-apply tone tips. The fun, diverse, informative videos Thorn has delivered have blossomed into a parallel profession with a built-in audience pushing 250k subscribers. While PG was on the road in SoCal, Thorn graciously invited Chris Kies into his Hollywood-based recording sanctuary, where his YouTube channel takes form. The hour-long chat covers Thorn's signature Suhr gear (guitars, amps, and humbuckers), he shows how his setup can switch between eight tube amps in a flash (only outdone by his ability to interchange cabs, mics, and speakers in a snap), and we dive deep into Pete's primary pedalboard.Brought to you by D'Addario XS Coated Strings.

The news follows Des Rocs' July 4 announcement on social media that he will be independently releasing a string of new singles this year. “‘Manic Memories' is a letter to the demons that haunt our past,” explains Danny Rocco, best known by his stage name Des Rocs. “The last few years have been a roller coaster, and writing about those demons provided the courage to navigate my own darkness. For anyone haunted by their past - I hope this song can be a beacon of light to guide you through the wilderness.” In September 2021, Des Rocs released his debut album A Real Good Person In A Real Bad Place and received instant praise from Loudwire (“addictive”), Guitar World (“fierce”), Rolling Stone, SPIN and Alternative Press (“groundbreaking”). The album received further acclaim from The Aquarian, American Songwriter and Premier Guitar. Consequence of Sound named the album's first single “MMC” “...one of the most exhilarating rock singles of 2021” while SPIN named his album release show at Bowery Ballroom one of the “Best Concerts of 2021,” praising his “Wembley-size energy” and proclaiming “Des Rocs is not to be missed in 2022.” We want to hear from you! After moving back to New York City, Joe Bonamassa spent some lockdown time in Germano Studios in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood, tightly winding the music for his latest album, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/joe-bonamassa (Time Clocks). His longtime producer Joe Shirley had to work with the powerhouse guitarist remotely, from his home in Australia. Yet the result is as seamlessly Bonamassa as ever, with riveting guitar work that has echoes ranging from Africa to Led Zeppelin. “My ADD transcends into my musical life,” the other JB told longtime Premier Guitar contributor Joe Charupakorn in our December feature. “It's a very different record for me. It's not a blues record, for sure. I just try to make records that don't bore me all the way through—we've got this groove covered, we've got that groove covered, let's put a sorbet in, something out of left field.” They don't serve sorbet at Nashville's hallowed Ryman Auditorium music hall—although I'm putting that in their suggestion box. But Bonamassa did dish out plenty of guitar flambé at his August 2 headliner there. And melded the music of Time Clocks with a selection of some of his favorite classic and original blues. PG's JB—that's me—connected with Joe onstage before the show, where I also did a https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-joe-bonamassa-2018 (Rig Rundown) with that other guy with my initials in 2018. This time, there were some new members of Bonamassa's ever-growing-and-shrinking collection of gear—which he spoke about at length earlier this year with Cory Wong on the rhythm guitar kingpin's https://www.premierguitar.com/podcast/wong-notes/joe-bonamassa-interview-podcast (Wong Notes podcast) for PG—pressed into service, including some recent-arrival Les Pauls, of course, and perhaps the most covetable collection of historic badass amps ever played on the Ryman stage. But rareness, novelty, or familiarity isn't what determines which toys come out to play. Bonamassa starts by building a rough set list, and then chooses the right instrument and amps for each song. Tinsley Ellis broke onto the national blues scene with his early '80s band, the Heartfixers. By late in the decade, when the Atlanta-based guitarist and singer began releasing albums under his own name, he also became a fixture in the genre's international club and festival circuit. Over the years he's earned a reputation for full-throttle live shows and well-crafted albums that hinge on his powerful singing and on his playing, which is based in tradition but packed with signature moves like deft finger slides, the use of open, ringing strings in single-note solos, and bends borrowed from B.B. King but laden with his own emotionalism and rock 'n' roll energy. Ellis has been a seemingly tireless road warrior—at least until Covid. But even the pandemic couldn't slow his songwriting, and he penned more than 200 new titles while in lockdown. You can hear 10 of those tunes, including 6-string bonfires like “Slow Train To Hell,” on his new album Devil May Care—the 20th in his catalog. Back on the road this year, Ellis stopped at Nashville's 3rd & Lindsley on March 3, where he showed Premier Guitar his rig and told stories of close encounters with B.B. King and other greats after soundcheck and, that night, delivered a sermon on the power and glory of blues. His current run continues until the end of May, and Ellis has just been nominated in the 2022 Blues Music Awards for Blue-Rock Entertainer of the Year. They've been playing as a duo and leading other musicians under the band's banner, with an album and a handful of EPs to their credit, ever since. Recently, Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger met with Zimmermann and Davis in their East Nashville studio while they took a break from recording their new album. Hello Effect Pedal listener, this is your host Wright Seneres. Thanks so much for your kind words and support for this podcast. If you’re an Apple Podcasts user and enjoy the show, please leave a 5-star rating, or even a review. Ratings and reviews go a long way in helping new people find and enjoy Effect Pedal too. You hear this from a lot of podcasts, but it’s really true. And if you’re not an Apple Podcasts user, you’re still just as awesome. You can tell your friends about Effect Pedal with the share button in your podcast app. So thanks again. And now, on with the show. “Black guys playing heavy metal” was how Living Colour was first described to me in 1988. Until that point, I had only seen white people playing heavy metal. “Black guys playing heavy metal? Really?” I had to find out what this was all about. So I turned on MTV, and there they were. The video to their big single “Cult of Personality” got a lot of airplay around then. If you’ve ever seen the cover to their debut album Vivid, which leads off with “Cult of Personality”, then you’ve seen the image of bright red beams of light exploding out of a person’s head.    ("Cult of Personality" intro riff) Videos of young people reacting to old people’s music were all the rage in 2020. If there was a reaction video of me in 1988, a 13-year old kid that loved music but had a lot to learn, listening to that Vivid album for the first time, you would have seen red beams of light exploding out of my head. That was by design. That description of Living Colour – Black guys playing heavy metal – is not really accurate, and missing the point. What I heard that exploded my head was their singular combination of metal, rock, soul, R&B, jazz, punk, and hip hop. And it was heavy, courtesy of a classic distortion pedal, the ProCo RAT.     My name is Wright Seneres and this is Effect Pedal. This is a podcast and art project dedicated to guitar effect pedals. In the universe, there are countless numbers of these pedals, creating an infinite number of sounds, and opening up worlds of possibilities for guitar players.   Of all of the guitarists I’ve talked about during this podcast, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid is the one who really showed me what those worlds of possibilities were for guitar players. A mad scientist’s mad scientist, constantly experimenting with guitar tones, textures, gadgets, and pedals. A never-ending quest for new sounds, new colors to use on his palette. Premier Guitar has two Rig Rundown videos on YouTube of the extensive gear of Vernon Reid. These videos, they’re like textbooks for me. I learned from him that the envelope exists to be pushed, in guitar playing, in guitar sounds, in music, and in life.   Part of what also exploded my head with that first album was their socially conscious lyrics. I had heard some of this from white punk bands, but Living Colour was on another level. Subject matter ranging from cults of personality, urban gentrification, inequality in America, superficiality, materialism, racism and more – this was heady stuff for a 13-year old with a lot to learn, but I got an education with that Vivid album.  The education has continued for nearly 30-plus years, as Living Colour is still as powerful, socially-conscious and sonically interesting as ever. It’s some of the best kind of lifelong learning. Unfortunately, their music is still relevant because social conditions have not changed enough for the better for Black people and other people of color. Pardon my French, but plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay the same. So the work continues.    After the break, from a basement in Kalamazoo to all around the world.  For t-shirts or art prints featuring the pedals of Season 1, visit the Effect Pedal website: http://EffectPedalProject.com (EffectPedalProject.com). They make great gifts for the guitar player...

Jeff has performed with Robben Ford, David Grissom, Matt Schofield, Ric Fierabracci, Keith Carlock and others. He is a top selling TrueFire instructor with over 20 instructional courses, an online classroom, and students around the world. He has contributed to Premier Guitar and Guitar Player Magazines. He has taught at the National Guitar Workshop, Crown Guitar Festival, Bath International Guitar Festival, Ruby Mountain Guitar Festival, and partners with Robben Ford in his Traveling Guitar Dojo every year. He was the curator of his Roots and Blues series at Brooklyns National Sawdust bringing in CeDell Davis, Robben Ford, David Grissom, and composer Mikel Rouse. Jeff is currently recording a record with Robben Ford. Jeff has been obsessed with the instrument for as long as he can remember. Having and older brother and sister, his first guitar heroes were Brian May and David Gilmour. Jeff quickly discovered Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, and other heavy band and found his stride. That era was the heyday of electric guitar and was an extremely exciting period for the instrument. After high-school Jeff joined NY metal band Hades opening for Anthrax, and King Diamond. After unceremoniously getting the boot for smiling too much on stage, Jeff enrolled at the Berklee College of Music and hit his stride and is still friends with many of the musicians he met there. Shortly after Berklee Jeff moved to NYC and studied with Mike Stern and Wayne Krantz for a short time. He joined NY rap/rock/funk/fusion band Liquid Hips and started touring Europe. At the same time Jeff was developing his own trio with a steady gig at NYs legendary 55 Bar. He added a singer and formed blues rock band Flytrap and became a staple in nyc. Jeff recorded his first solo Cd Im Tired featuring Ric Fierabracci, Kip Reed, Hari Ganglberger, and Walter Fischbacher. Jeff discovered he enjoyed teaching as much as he did playing when he was hired by the National Guitar Workshop, as their youngest teacher. He also found it to be a more steady income than many of his touring buddies. At the NGW Jeff got to jam with many of his heroes and formed relationships that last to this day. Jeff embraced technology early by teaching online when Skype was launched. He also joined the TrueFire roster when the company was in its early phases and has become one of their most popular and best selling instructors. A lover of gear Jeff endorses Two-Rock Amplifiers, Michael Tuttle Guitars, Collings Guitars, DAdarrio strings, Universal Audio, and ThroBak pickups. Jeffs website is jeffmcerlain.com

I first became aware of Ted Drozdowski when I was working at the Boston Phoenix, reading his reviews and features as I helped to transfer them from the print edition to the Web. It wasn't until later, when I put together a benefit show and Ted stepped in as a player and an organizer, that I really got to see how powerful a guitar player and songwriter he was and is. Then I got to see how he put the two together, doing a show on the history of the blues at a local museum, and using his guitar to illustrate different periods and styles. For years, Ted has led recorded and gigged with his project, Scissormen. But with this new album, Coyote Motel, he has expanded his musical landscape. There are more players, deeper textures, more ambitious songwriting. The psychedelic sounds from previous work are at the forefront here, which you might have heard on last week's featured track, “Still Among the Living.” He's also still a prolific music journalist, now an editor with Premier Guitar. If you're a guitarist and gearhead, you've likely read his stuff in the magazine's excellent “Rig Rundown” series. You will hear about all of that and more in this conversation, as well as Ted's heartfelt explanation of what moving to Nashville has done for him, as a musician and a human being. You can find out more about Coyote Motel and all of his work at teddrozdowski.com, on Twitter at @scissormen, and on Facebook under Scissormen. The featured track this week is an excerpt from Sarah Moss's new book, Ghost Wall. It's a short read, and a short audio – just under four hours – but this is a thick and thorny story. The set-up is that a family of three has joined an anthropology professor and a handful of students on a field trip in the North of England to live as the inhabitants would have in the Iron Age. Teenaged Silvie and her mother are just passengers here for father's obsession with a time when England was, in his estimation, pure. He insists that Silvie and her mother adhere to the rules of the age, even if the land and local conditions have changed to make that impossible. Silvie's father uses Iron Age mores as a cudgel and a means of control, a way to shame Silvie and her mother into obedience. Her father is never proud of her unless she is acting as an avatar for his limited view of the world. But out amongst these college students, especially the free-spirited Molly, Silvie is finding her own philosophy, her own sexuality, her own self. The studies become metaphors for the dangers of nationalism, racism, gender inequality, and romanticizing the morals of a bygone era. The locals used to sacrifice what they love most to the bog, and build walls topped with skulls and bodies to scare off the enemy – their “most powerful magic,” as it's referred to in the book. We pick up the story here as Silvie is returning from foraging to find her father and the professor talking around the fire. You can find the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Powell's, or your local bookstore, and the audio on Audible.

Early titles for the podcast. Waxing and tasting capacitors to get the best tone? And why feeding the trolls is bad. Almost as soon as there were radio stations, there were college radio stations. In 1948, to popularize FM radio, the FCC introduced class D non commercial education licenses for low-watt college radio stations. By 1967, 326 FM radio signals in the United States operated as “educational radio,” 220 of which were owned and operated by colleges and universities. The type of programming that these stations offered varied widely, from lectures and sporting events, to various kinds of musical shows, but toward the late 1970s, a new genre of college rock appeared on the scene. Record labels took note as college DJs discovered up-and-coming new artists, although they sometimes stopped playing those artists once they made it big.Joining this week's episode is historian Dr. Katherine Rye Jewell, a Professor at Fitchburg State University and author of Live from the Underground: A History of College Radio. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
