(Original Airdate: February 19th, 2018) The Village (marketed as M. Night Shyamalan's The Village) is a 2004 American period thriller film[4] written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, and Brendan Gleeson. The film is about a village whose population lives in fear of creatures inhabiting the woods beyond it, referred to as "Those We Don't Speak Of". The Village received mixed reviews, with many critics expressing disappointment with the twist ending.[5][6] James Newton Howard was nominated for Best Original Score at the 77th Academy Awards. The film was a financial success as it grossed $257 million worldwide against a $60 million production budget.[7] HAIKU-- "They live in the woods. Terrible creatures surround. Refrigerator." - MC
A month when Kentucky beat Kang and Drax... ...but not MAGIC MIKE. Which is an understandable L to take. Especially with Steven Soderbergh and Salma Hayek along for the LAST DANCE. But before we get to that spectacle we make fun of Marvel's visual effects, defend M. Night Shyamalan's THE VILLAGE and think that Californians should pick up a book. To hear all of these charming complaints give us a buck (just one dollar, people) and support us on Patreon along with other material from the movie podcasts of the not-so-magic-Mike. In this episode of the show we are venturing into the mystical woods of New England and talking about M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. Over the course of this yet another gargantuan conversation we dig into the film's problematic reception upon its release, comment on the differences between what ended up in the film and what leaked out online during production, find multiple meanings and readings within this story, identify the filmmaker's inspirations, try to figure out whether this film would work better today and who would star in it, if it was about to hit cinemas tomorrow and - as usual - exchange multiple barbs over the most insignificant minutiae while having an absolute ball! Tune in and enjoy! Hosts: Jakub Flasz, Carson Timar, , Nicolo Grasso & Jak-Luke Sharp Intro: Infraction - Cassette Outro: Infraction - Daydream The Uncut Gems Podcast is a CLAPPER production
On this week's episode, host Matt Bledsoe is joined by friend of the show and first time guest, Hayden Gilbert, to discuss M. Night Shyamalan's The Village! They discuss the reception to the movie when it first came out (and if it's due for a reappraisal), the performances, and of course, Shyamalan's use of twists. Matt and Hayden also discuss what they've seen lately, and the conversation on the Village starts around the 45 minute mark. Also, it probably goes without saying but major spoilers for the Village!
Join us as we discuss WandaVision, the Marvel Studios' TV show that defied all expectations. Is Mark going to sing THAT song? How many times will we mention Lost? And what exactly *are* runes…? MEGA WARNING: Right from the off, we spoil MAJOR plot points in WandaVision. We also discuss many of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a massive twist in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, and – weirdly – the end of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. Please proceed with caution! Also… sorry for the sound quality. We didn't record this in our bathroom – promise! – but we have moved to another part of the house to record and there's a little more echo than we would like. We'll sort it for next time! We invite back Rachel Kennerly of "Cannabis Heals Me" to discuss M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village". The movie has the expected twist that has become on of Shyamalan's tropes, however, I think the twist we will have on this will be even better. The premise of the movie will give us plenty of fodder for discussion as we get into instilling fear to maintain control as the benevolent overseers infantilize the populace for their own good, the greater good - or do they? Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom star Bryce Dallas Howard sat down with the HFPA's journalist Scott Orlin at the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills to talk about why her new adventure movie is relevant in this day and age. In this conversation she also discusses her middle name, being on set with her father Ron Howard, her first film role in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village, working with practical dinosaur effects, and directing her first short “Orchids” during her first pregnancy, and working on The Help.
This week, we're talking M. Night Shyamalan's The Village (2004). This star-studded film is visually beautiful with a haunting score, but still manages to fizzle. With solid performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Dallas Howard, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, and Sigourney Weaver, this film should have been a hit. The problem is that twist ending. It's just... anti-climactic. What are your thoughts on The Village? Let us know at thecriticalbreakdownpodcast@gmail.com or leave us a review online!
