We really get into this one, discussing what makes Blade Runner such a good film, but also take time to discuss the flaws at hand. We also take a few moments to look at how this film's sequel, Blade Runner 2049 (2017) holds up in comparison.  Synthwave by Ryan Andersen is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial License. When Harry Met Sally is kind of a rom-com standard, capturing the hearts of cinema-goers for years. But does it still hold up? For us, it wasn't the best watch this time around, but it's not a terrible movie. Some of it just seems so outdated and forced, but there are some great moments still.  The backstory behind the actual film is way more interesting than the overall story, though.  We also spend some time talking anime and the MCU, because why not!  Synthwave by Ryan Andersen is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial License. So this is gonna sound weird, but we want you guys to watch two movies with us, and then send us your thoughts! We are pushing back our new episode one week to hear from YOU! That's right, all you have to do is watch Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion on Netflix, and then send us your thoughts at podcast@TheCriticalBreakdown.com. Both films are streaming in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telagu, and Tamil! The Baahubali series is hard to explain, but it is one of the most successful Indian films in India, as well as in the US. The film is a fantasy adventure film, with epic war, romantic musical numbers, and enough fun to make us fall in love. It's bombastic, it's ridiculous, and it's sincere. Also, the first film ends with an epic cliffhanger, that possibly surpasses other cinematic cliffhangers I have seen. We had chills! Scott screamed!  The Baahubali series needs to be experienced — we haven't put in enough love for foreign cinema here, and so we're taking the extra time to let our brains fully digest what they experienced.  Once again, we encourage ALL of our listeners to check out at least one of these films and then send us your thoughts in email. You can send us a text email, a video email, or an audio email. You can also tweet at us, leave us a facebook message, or send us snail mail. Basically, if you record your voice, we'll shove you in our episode, but if you send us words, we'll read them out loud.  Consider yourselves recipients of our first challenge! There WILL be a quiz at the end of this lesson.

Well, we finally did it. The two of us sat down and we watched us a Quentin Tarantino movie — 2009's Inglourious Basterds, specifically. We take time to really tear into this one, what works, and what feels a bit TOO Tarantino. We also ask if it is possible to view Tarantino in the same light after Uma Thurman's story, as well as his apparent dismissal of Harvey Weinstein's heinous ways.  We have fun with this episode, taking our time to really get into it. Say what you will about Tarantino, he knows how to make movies you want to discuss with friends. Synthwave by Ryan Andersen is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial License. Well, we've hit a milestone by reaching a Stanley Kubrick film — one that is based on the book of the same name by Stephen King. Yes, we're talking about The Shining (1980) this week.  It's pretty obvious the kind of conversations we would have around the plot of this film — almost everyone knows what this movie is about. It's a haunted hotel, right? Or is it cabin fever? Maybe it's about something deeper — like Native American genocide, or the Holocaust. Uhh, it could also be about addiction and being seduced by the devil. Maybe it's just really a misunderstood story about family?  We're joined by friend of the show Albert Dubreuil, who has written two really fun blogs for our website. We had four good choices — Mulan, Heat, and Steve Jobs — but our listeners were dying for us to share a dream with Leonardo DiCaprio.  Inception is a great film. It's an original science fiction action thriller that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The story also appeals to your own experiences, because we've all experienced the little details they name and describe about dreaming. It's a brilliant plot tactic that makes us identify with the characters in this outlandish story.  Also, this is our 100th Episode! Thanks for sticking with us throughout the last 100 weeks. This week we watched one of Max's favorite movies — The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005). This Judd Apatow comedy blends gross-out sex comedy with a character driven romance with heart. Sure, it may have aged just a bit, but the charm is so strong here that it still packs a powerful punch. It's quotable, it's lovable, and it's definitely worth revisiting from time to time. Just from the cast alone, you can watch this and be amazed at how many of these performers had small cameos and non-speaking lines but went on to become household names. Sure, Paul Rudd has been kicking around forever, but did you see that young Jonah Hill?
