When Al Pacino became obsessed with Oscar Wilde's Salome, he didn't make it easy on himself when trying to put it on camera. Salome is a filmed version of the stage production that featured Pacino as King Herod and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty, IT Chapter Two) as Salome. Wilde Salome is a behind the scenes look at trying to stage the production. While also trying to make a feature film, or at least scenes from the play. Directed by Al Pacino, it took years before it appeared on the festival circuit. And then even longer before it was available to watch at home. To try an unravel what Salome & Wilde Salome is all about is entertainment journalist Emily Murray, who is one of the few people that saw the documentary on the big screen when it had a one-night-only showing in the UK back in 2014. Emily explains why she went to see it, how she was hoping for more as to why Al was obsessed with the play and what she thinks to Jessica Chastain's performance. All About Al: The Pacino Podcast is written, presented and produced by Mark Searby. In this year's GateSlashers podcast special, hosts Dan and Ethan sit down to talk about IT, the two-part film adaption of Stephen King's iconic horror novel. Released in 2017, IT Chapter One, directed by Andy Muschietti, adapted one half of King's novel, focusing on a group of teen outcasts known as the Loser's Club as they encounter a malevolent entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in their hometown of Derry, Maine. IT Chapter Two, released in 2019, again directed by Muschietti, finds the Loser's Club reuniting 27 years later to once again face-off with a returned Pennywise. On the podcast, we discuss our love of these films, how they are a shining example of studio horror, and true fear brought on by Pennywise. We also dive into the perfect casting across the board, from the young Loser's Club to their adult counterparts, and the sublimely terrifying performance by Bill Skarsgård as the titular IT, Pennywise.

This week, we kick off Spooktober with the original horror anthology film, a collaboration between two titans of the genre from two different mediums as the king of horror movies brings to life a script from the King of horror fiction to create a loving homage to the creepy comic books they both grew up reading. It's 1982's Creepshow, directed by George A. Romero, written by Stephen King, and starring Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, Ed Harris and Bingo O'Malley. As an anthology film it's a bit uneven, and King probably should have recused himself from acting in the movie. But it's undeniably charming, working off a formula that I must lament we don't get more of still to this day. Plus: Giving the fans what they want, we've got more Diet Root Beer discussion. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Creepshow is not currently streaming anywhere north of the border but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include Beverly Hills Cop, Hook, Rebel Ridge, First Blood, Will & Harper, Star Trek: First Contact, Smile, The Ring, It Follows, Alien, Trick 'r Treat, Creepshow 2, Creepshow (2019), The Outer Limits (1995), The Stand (1994), IT Chapter Two, Hulk, Decision To Leave, Cheers, Black Mirror, American Horror Stories, From Dusk Til Dawn, Planet Terror and Dawn of the Dead, among others. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a prolonged stay in the King's court, as we check in with the 2007 John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson hotel horror 1408! That one is available to stream in Canada on Hollywood Suite at the moment. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Jodie Sweetin as Jane DaSilva: Although we were not always convinced by her performance, she definitely found a niche in this series. We appreciated seeing her take on a more dramatic role. Paris Jefferson as Aunt Sadie: We absolutely loved Aunt Sadie's wardrobe and her quirky lines that gave the movie some light-hearted moments. The Initial Plot: The introduction of the suspects and the murder board added an intriguing layer to the mystery. The breakdown of their motives and the visual representation on the murder board was highly engaging. Jodi Sweetin's Singing: We were delightfully surprised by her singing voice, featured in both the opening and end credits of the movie. Are you like me and just a little too young to have experienced firsthand some of the retro pop culture you've grown to love? Then I've got five films to help take you back to the 70s and 80s, that weren't made during that time. These films are like me—not quite retro. First, we have It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), which deliver a one-two punch of horror and nostalgia. This film adaptation of Stephen King's It moves the setting up to the late 1980s and mid-2010s, modernizing the original story just a bit, but still leaning into the nostalgia of childhood, friendship, and conquering childhood trauma. Next up is 2011's Super 8, written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Set in 1979, a group of kids while making a Super 8 movie accidentally record a train crash and get footage that they shouldn't have seen. It's a wonderful send-up of horror and sci-fi directors, like Spielberg, George Romero, John Carpenter, and Alfred Hitchcock, while also being a poignant exploration of grief. If you need something to lighten the mood after the scariness of the It films and Super 8, you'll enjoy 1998's The Wedding Singer! The tagline for the film is “He's going to party like it's 1985!” and boy, does he ever. Wonderfully silly and surprisingly sincere and romantic, The Wedding Singer is a lot of fun from start to finish. Grab your Aqua Net and enjoy this fun rom-com with the person who wants to grow old with you. Our final selection for our Not Quite Retro movie night is the 2021 Paul Thomas Anderson film, Licorice Pizza. While met with some initial controversy, this is a multi-award nominated and winning film from the writer and director that brought you Magnolia and Boogie Nights. Set in 1973, Licorice Pizza watches our leads, Alana Kane (played by Alana Haim) and Gary Valentine (played by Cooper Hoffman), grow up, figure out life, and fall in love. It's a mythology of early 70s San Fernando Valley legends with an amazing soundtrack, a cast stacked with phenomenal actors, and the band HAIM, as well as their parents. Make a martini, or maybe just grab two cokes, and enjoy the feel-good comedy that is Licorice Pizza. We hope our selections this week take you back to a time in history that you may or may not have experienced firsthand. If you did, do these films accurately capture that time period? Which films do you think capture it best? Thanks for joining us on this trip back to the 70s and 80s in this episode of the Video Store Podcast. Bill Skarsgård Returns as Pennywise in Max's 'Welcome to Derry'

Max has officially announced that Bill Skarsgård will reprise his iconic role as Pennywise the Clown in the upcoming It prequel series, "Welcome to Derry." Skarsgård, who first terrified audiences in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's It and its 2019 sequel, It Chapter Two, is also set to serve as an executive producer on the series. Reuniting with Skarsgård are Andy Muschietti, the director of both It films, along with producer Barbara Muschietti and co-producer Jason Fuchs. This collaboration promises to deliver a chilling expansion of the It universe, with big scares tailored for the small screen. Skarsgård's return to the role comes after he confirmed in March last year that he was "not involved" with the prequel. However, it seems the allure of Pennywise was too strong to resist, and he has since signed on to bring the flame-haired clown back to life. Although the series has been in development since 2022, details remain scarce. Even the working title, "Welcome to Derry," is subject to change.

Editors - Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE While THE FLASH editors Jason Ballantine ACE and Paul Machliss ACE* both hail from Australia, this latest entry in the DCEU would be their first time meeting one another.  Both editors have been advancing their careers away from their homeland for quite some time.  Jason has worked in LA for the past ten years, while Paul has been in London for the last twenty.  The director who would be responsible for bringing these two together is Andy Muschietti, Jason's director for IT (2017) and IT CHAPTER TWO (2019).  The two editors split editing duties pretty much down the middle for THE FLASH, each taking five of the film's ten reels.  One thing that did separate them for much of the film's development was geography.  While Jason was holding down the fort at Warner Brothers Studios in LA, Paul was on location in the UK for seven months, assembling main unit footage with Muschietti.  Following production, Machliss would join Jason in LA for six additional months of editing.  And it would be six more months before Ballantine would put the final touches on the highly anticipated "metahuman" movie. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, THE FLASH is the thirteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen (The Flash) alongside Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston and Maribel Verdú.  In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which traps him in an alternate reality without metahumans. Barry enlists the help of; his younger self, an older Batman and the Kryptonian castaway Supergirl in order to save this world from General Zod and return to his universe. JASON BALLANTINE ACE Jason Ballantine began his editing career in the horror genre (one which he would return to often) with the Australian thriller WOLF CREEK (2005).  From there he would edit other fright flicks, such as PROM NIGHT (2008), CRUSH (2009) and NEEDLE (2010).  But it would be his work on director Andy Muschietti's adaptation of Stephen King's IT (2017) and IT: CHAPTER TWO (2019) that would put an exclamation point on Jason's work in the horror medium.  Jason has also previously teamed up with directors Baz Luhrmann and Matthew Vaughn for THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) and THE KING'S MAN (2021) respectively. PAUL MACHLISS ACE While known most prominently for his work with Edgar Wright; SPACED (1999-2001), SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD (2010), THE WORLD'S END (2013), BABY DRIVER (2017) and LAST NIGHT IN SOHO (2021), Paul also edited; the pilot episode of FLEABAG (2016), eighteen episodes of THE IT CROWD (2006-2008) and films such as THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING (2019) and THE GENTLEMEN (2019).  For his work on BABY DRIVER, Paul was nominated for an Oscar® alongside co-editor John Amos. * [Publisher's Note] The guests wish to express their regret and apologies for using he/him pronouns in referencing Ezra Miller (they/them). Apparently this movie was first slated to come out more than four years ago?  Yup after several years of pre-productions stops and starts, COVID-related delays, a revolving door of talented directors joining the project, and....a lot of dicey criminal activity from its start not long after production completed, DC's stand-alone movie focused on one of its most beloved superheroes is FINALLY coming to the big screen!  Ezra Miller stars in the titular role of the Scarlett Speedster,  otherwise known as The Flash - his actual character's name is Barry Allen and he's embarking on a unique journey of attempting to change one tragic part of his past through the power of his speed......officially known as the "Speed Force." Of course he ends causing more damage than expected within a different time line...and chaos ensues.  Fortunately, Barry is able to enlist in getting help from an old friend, Bruce Wayne - although this is a different Bruce Wayne than he has known before, this time played by Michael Keaton!  Yes the same Michael Keaton who played Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman from '89 and Batman Returns from '92.  Only this time, he's NOT being directed by Tim Burton - the director who finally took on the role of completing this epic saga is Andy Muschietti who recently gave us It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two.  So after all the craziness which lead up to its release, did we actually get a GOOD movie in the end?  Only one way to find out....  Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

When you peer into the mirror, do you like what you see? What about when you just get out of the shower? That probably depends a great deal on your age… Here in Episode 007 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, we talk about the increasing appearance of Naked Old People in Horror movies! Sure, we got that dilapidated “dish” in Room 237 in “The Shining” (1980). But the appearance of saggy and baggy bods has surely ticked up in frequency over the past decade with films like, “REC 2” (2009), “The Taking of Deborah Logan” (2014), “The Visit” (2015), “The Witch” (2015), “Hereditary” (2018), “Midsommar” (2019), “It: Chapter Two” (2019), “The Dark and the Wicked” (2020),”Amulet” (2020), and of course, that brings us to our big Feature Review of Ti West's “X” (2022)! In addition to the new Ti West flick, in Episode 007 your favorite Horror hosts also bring you reviews of The Exorcism of God (2022), Umma (2022), Off Season (2022), You Are Not My Mother (2022), and Bhoothakaalam (2022). And as part of our usual, genre-defining PSAs, we even briefly discuss a couple a couple of non-Horror movies, namely, Deep Water (2022), Beneath the Surface (2022). Also in Episode 007, Jay of the Dead reveals the unforgettable true story of how Dr. Shock earned the nickname, “Back-Door Becker.” We also read an email from Candela, our Norwegian high-school student friend, who responds to our hosts' answers (from Episode 006) to her question about American Horror movies influenced by the Cold War. Some of the boys were “deep in their cups,” as they say, while recording this episode, so our coherence may waiver somewhat from segment to segment. And of course, you will get seven, Horror-themed Specialty Segments from each host, including Jay of the Dead's It Could Happen to You Horror, Dr. Shock's Macabre Film History, Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon, Mister Watson's Horror Hierarchy, The Dead Zone with Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis's Monsters on the Mantle, and Horror in Black and White by Mackula!
