Patrick MacLeamy the former CEO of the world-renowned architecture firm HOK, joins us again. In this episode we dive into his book Designing a World-Class Architecture Firm. We take a deep dive into how: why Patrick wrote this book, how to value your firm, how to structure your bank accounts, and how to think about bonuses. Patrick practiced architecture for 50 years at HOK, one of the top 10 largest architecture/engineering firms in the world. He began there as a “junior designer” and worked his way up, serving as HOK's CEO and Chairman from 2003-2017. As CEO, Patrick led HOK's transformation from a firm that struggled to pay its bills and was close to breaking apart, to one that is consistently profitable, with a company culture where people help each other to succeed.

This latest podcast was recorded in Oslo, Norway at the 2023 buildingSmart International Standards Summit, the annual gathering for all those leading the development and adoption of open data and digital systems across the global infrastructure sector.Clearly the built environment sector faces many challenges such as the need to raise productivity, drive towards net zero and boost the economic and social value gained from the vast public spend being committed by governments around the world. The use of data and digital systems, underpinned by new tools such as artificial intelligence and a new ecosystem of digital twins are set to become critical in the race to deliver the more effective, efficient, useful and sustainable infrastructure assets needed to secure the future. Open data is data that can be freely used, re-used and redistributed by anyone, unencumbered by the constraints of software vendors of assets owner requirement is central to making this happen. OpenBIM underpinned by the IFC data standard are some of the buildingSmart concepts being used to try to redefine the world of digital engineering to ensure that data can be shared effortless and without cost up and down the supply chain. To discuss this issue, my guest is Patrick MacLeamy, former chairman and founder of buildingSMART International, and former chief executive of global architecture practice HOK and the man who for the last 30 plus years has been devoted to the principal of open data - and to not only persuading the infrastructure sector to embrace the concept but to also providing the tools to enable it to happen.ResourcesbuildingSMART international websiteIndustry Foundation Classes (IFCSs) explainedUK Government guide to BIM

Today you'll also hear from Patrick MacLeamy, the former CEO of HOK. During his 50-year tenure at HOK, MacLeamy witnessed the firm's growth from a single midwestern office to 27 locations across the globe offering architecture, interiors, engineering, planning and more. MacLeamy joined HOK St. Louis in 1967, after which he helped establish the firm's San Francisco outpost in 1970 - later becoming managing principal of that office.  He joined HOK's executive committee in 1995 and was named COO five years later.  In 2003, HOK shareholders elected MacLeamy Chief Executive Officer. He led the firm for 13 years.  In 2016, MacLeamy chose a new CEO for HOK, remaining as Chairman for one more year before retiring —or as he likes to say, “repurposing.”  MacLeamy is also the Chairman of buildingSMART International, which works to achieve open standards for the exchange of digital information in the building and infrastructure industries.  He was a founding member of buildingSMART, in 1994. In today's episode, we discuss how your practice can prepare for the next recession. Patrick MacLeamy was the CEO of HOK from 2003 to 2017, capping off a 50-year career at the venerable firm responsible for the National Air and Space Museum, Moscone Center, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and is credited with creating "The MacLeamy Curve," a touchstone of business guidance for the built environment. In his semi-retirement, he is a founder and chairman of buildingSMART International, which encourages the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and more open collaboration between the design and construction industries. He recently authored "Designing a World-Class Architecture Firm: The People, Stories and Strategies Behind HOK." Hear some of his lifetime's worth of colorful anecdotes and sage advice on this special episode of Unfrozen. Intro/Outro: "Elevation" by U2 Nuggets: “We need to think about contractors as our valued colleagues and friends, and change the way we think about our industry. It needs to be more collaborative – design-bid-build is going into the dustbin of history. Collaborative design-build is the way forward.” “Managing risk and complexity is much easier to do collaboratively. We have to wake up and smell the coffee. The old way of designing and building is changing. If architects want to rejoin society in a special place, they have to adapt. The world needs us, but we need to get the rules of the game changed so we can be successful again.”

Al'ai Alvarez, MD aka LA is a national leader and educator on Wellness and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He is a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine and the Director of Well-Being at Stanford Emergency Medicine. He co-leads the Human Potential Team and serves as the Fellowship Director of the Stanford EM Physician Wellness, and Co-Chair of the Stanford WellMD's Physician Wellness Forum. His work focuses on humanizing physician roles as individuals and teams through the harnessing of our individual human potential in the context of high-performance teams. This includes optimizing the interdependence between Process Improvement (Quality and Clinical Operations), Recruitment (Diversity), and Well-being (Inclusion). Currently, he is one of the 2021-2022 Faculty Fellows at the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.  Andrew Petrosoniak MD is a trauma team leader and emergency physician at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada. He's an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and he leads the translational simulation program at St. Michael's Hospital. His research focuses on the use of in situ simulation and design thinking to support human-centered care. He's also co-principal at Advanced Performance Healthcare Design, a firm that consults with hospitals, start ups and high stake industries using simulation to improve decision making and inform the design of systems, spaces and teams. White paper on simulation informed design. In 2004, Patrick MacLeamy drew a set of curves based on a pretty self-evident observation: an architectural project becomes more difficult to change the more developed it becomes. For this earth-shattering revelation MacLeamy named the curve after himself (although the title should probably go to Boyd Paulson who drew the curve much earlier [see Noel's comment to this post]). You have probably seen the graph before. It gets trotted out in every slide deck promoting BIM / IPD / or early-stage environmental analysis.  The key point is that architects expel their effort at a time when design changes are relatively costly. MacLeamy and his disciples advocate shifting design effort forward in the project, front loading it, in order to reduce the cost of design changes.

John Igoe, at the time, Assistant to the San Francisco Chief Administrative Officer, provides additional project insight from the perspective of the governing body and client. Opened in 1981, the Moscone Center has held some of the most important events in modern business and political history, including the Democratic National Convention in 1984, Google's I/O from 2008-2015, and the announcement of the iPhone in 2007. The Moscone Center has not only provided top-tier event spaces for companies the world over but has also been a significant source of revenue for San Francisco. The project presented unique challenges and opportunities - an ongoing lawsuit and public pressures, a requirement to build the building below the water table, where it faced significant water pressure, and to combat the feeling of being underground, the team came up with and implemented an innovative post-tensioned concrete arch system.
