Derek Rishmawy, Alastair Roberts, and Joseph Minich explore the Jesus People movement of the 1970s—from hippie communes to Calvary Chapel—and its lasting impact on American evangelicalism. They discuss the tension between Spirit-led revival and institutional church structure, examining how countercultural seekers became conservative evangelicals and what today's church can learn from this transformative era. Key Takeaway: The Jesus People movement reveals how the church's greatest evangelistic strength—meeting spiritual hunger with radical acceptance—can also become its greatest weakness without proper institutional structure and long-term discipleship. What do Albert Einstein, the Jesus People, and Donald Trump all have in common? According to historian and journalist Molly Worthen, they're all part of a surprising American story about the strange, magnetic force we call charisma. In this episode, Russell Moore sits down with Worthen to explore the themes of her new book, Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History, and why understanding charisma may be the key to understanding American religion, politics, and even ourselves. From revival tents to campaign rallies to cable news sets, Worthen tracks five distinct types of charisma that have shaped our country's imagination—from JFK to your local megachurch pastor. Why do some people command a room without saying a word, while others say everything and still lose the crowd? Moore and Worthen dig into the seduction and danger of charisma, its role in religious experience, and how it can drive both conversion and cults of personality. They also reflect on Worthen's own journey from atheism to faith, and why figures such as Tim Keller and J.D. Greear played unexpected roles in that story. Plus: the only time Russell Moore has ever found himself in a room full of unconscious people, all but him on the floor—and what that has to do with spiritual longing. If you've ever wondered why we're drawn to certain voices, movements, or personalities—and how those forces shape the American soul—this conversation will leave you thinking, and maybe even unsettled.

Matthew 5:9–12 (CSB) Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. “You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

My last episode ended with the popular song, “I love you Lord”, that we sang in the 80s. It was representative of the message, that came out of the "Jesus People" movement; “Jesus loves you and calls you to follow him.” Our daughters were growing up, with the modern choruses of praise music, that began in the early 70s. Gone were the days of singing the hymns that I grew up with in the Methodist church. And the organ was being replaced by guitars, violins, flutes, tamborines and microphones for the singers. There were new churches and ministries springing up all over the world. For Thomas and I, our exposure to this kind of music, started at "Living Waters"; singing the scriptures to melodies, that were written by people that we knew. This development of new praise was organic, and stemmed from, an inspirational type of Bible teaching. I look at it now, as a historical period, in modern culture that partly resulted from the counterculture movement called the “Summer of Love”. For many young people like myself, we were hearing a fresh kind, of Christian message. It was simple, it was real, it was miraculous, because lives were being transformed. Many people, had no idea that the influence of the “Jesus Revolution”, was also taking place all over the world.

Not long after our flight home from California, we got some faith shaking news. At the end of July, the well known singer, Keith Green, had died in an airplane crash. I don't remember how we heard about the accident; maybe a call from our friends in Eureka, or in the newsletter from his ministry. The report said that Keith and friends, had taken off in a twin engine plane on the private airstrip, of their ministry housing in Texas. Keith wanted to take visitors on an aerial tour of the property. There were a total of 11 people, that included Keith, his two and three year old, plus a family with six children on that plane. Keith's wife, Melody who was pregnant, stayed home, with their one year old daughter. The plane crashed after take-off, and it was determined later, that it was overloaded beyond the operating limitations. Keith was an example as a pioneer in Christian song writing for Thomas. We had a couple of his tapes, and received his regular newsletter, called Last Days Ministries. We had a lot in common with him, coming from the Jesus People movement. I think we bought his newest tape, called “Songs for the Shepherd,” in California, at the Christian bookstore.

When Marline Williams told me about her book, All Men Are Liars, and explained it was about the Jesus Revolution time in the early seventies, I knew she had a winner. There's NOTHING out there yet (although I know of another series coming!). So listen in to see why Williams wrote this book and where the series is going! note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. As a very young kid in the seventies (born in 1970) I was pretty clueless to the Jesus Revolution until the early nineties when I met a friend whose husband was a big part of it--her pastor who looked right out of a pop album cover, and really heard about these people who went from "free love" to Jesus' love during the middle of the last long revival America had. Marline Williams was a part of that movement and uses her experiences and memories to readers of today to that time so we see what total surrender to the Lord can look like in the every day... plus a little romance along the way. The book came out on Sunday and is available in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited! All Men Are Liars by Marline Williams Hey, Jesus People need love, too! 1973. This is it. The year "dateless" Dana Whitman vows she'll finally get a Christian boyfriend. At her stuffy Bible college, that means squelching her Jesus freaky ways, her wild child self. To pull this off, she'll need all her theatrical skills—and some boring conservative threads. So long, funky bell-bottoms. Hello, Brady Bunch miniskirts. No more tambourines in church. No more sidewalk surfing. But the right guy's worth it. After all, it's not like she's lying or anything! It's just a harmless put-on. Dana fights a freak-out when her prim-and-proper camouflage works a little too well. Neither the devilishly handsome campus Romeo nor the pre-med peacenik were part of her plan. When temptation masquerades as true love, will Dana betray her newfound faith or her free-spirited heart? Learn more about on WEBSITE and follow on GoodReads. Like to listen on the go? Jesus has this way of turning our culture inside out and society upside down. He has this way of doing and saying things, and even blessing people, that is counter-cultural and revolutionary. It doesn't always make sense to us. This Sunday kicks off our Inside-Out, Sermon On The Mount, 7-week Fall series, along with our new LifeGroups launch. Together we will explore some of the best-known verses in the Bible that still echo throughout our culture - “The Golden Rule”, “love your enemies”, “kingdom come”. This week as we tee-up the series, we will answer the question: “Who is Jesus' sermon for?" And we will take a look at His opener, “The Beatitudes” – you know, the “‘Blessed are…” statements of Jesus. That word ‘blessed', well, it can be a blessed problem. In fact, all the Beatitudes seem to be totally out of step with our culture, and pointing in the wrong direction, especially for those of us looking to climb the cultural ladder. What's up with that, Jesus? Come. Listen. Learn. Apply. From the Master Preacher, Jesus.
In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by David Douglas, President of the St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission, to tell us his long, winding, and incredibly compelling faith journey. It begins, for David, in a socialist commune, the son of a prominent bluegrass musician, David's parents had a radical conversion to Evangelical Christianity through the Jesus People movement in the 1980's which would forever shape the trajectory of David's faith life – and this would only be the beginning. Through overseas missionary work, life on nearly every continent on the globe, and through deep experiences of charismatic, evangelical, and biblical faith David's journey culminated, in a way, with his decision to join the Catholic Church with his family – and it's only continued from there! It's a remarkable story, told by a remarkable storyteller, and I sincerely hope you enjoy it!Visit the St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission for more information.Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com.
